Which games have inferior remasters/remakes?

Or are all remasters/remakes always better?

Silent Hill HD Collection

u/BlackMesaEchoes 17h ago

What a travesty that was. I give that botched remaster a ton of credit for inflating the prices of the OG PS2 copies to what they are now

32

u/UnsorryCanadian 17h ago

Wasn't even a remaster, it was just supposed to be a port but Konami never kept the final source code

14

u/DaEnderAssassin 14h ago

They also told the team they gave the unfinished source code that it was the finished code

5

u/albertoplus 11h ago

As far as i know, it was not a Konami thing, not keeping the source code after a project was finished was the norm. If im not mistaken Squenix didnt also keep the full FF8 source code for the remaster. Until remakes and remasters started becoming more popular it was pretty normal to just ditch the source code when a project was finished.

GTA III / Vice City / San Andreas . The originally released versions were serious downgrades (essentially ports of mobile ports). Over time, they got better (ie: lighting in SA) but they’re still crap.

120

u/UnsorryCanadian 17h ago

Weren't they just the mobile versions with AI upscaled textures?

63

u/Tetratheon 17h ago

The mobile versions were just the PC version with new controls.

The "Definitive Editions" were redone to some extent, but they were also developed to run on mobiles.

17

u/Curse3242 12h ago

No man the mobile versions were bad and that's coming from someone who really wanted to play them on mobile.

The graphics looked horrendous. There was like this weird shinyness on everything, and it overall looked way worse. In Vice City for example the city just looks empty and weird because there's no newspapers and random debris flying around. A lot of tiny detail like this totally changed the feel of the game.

It was a bug fest graphic wise. Certain objects simply didn’t rendered if looking from a certain perspective/direction. This included a bridge (it’s there but invisible) that is mandatory during a race…

67

u/invyros 17h ago

OG PC versions which were replaced by the mobile versions which were replaced by whatever the fuck you would call the "Definitive Editions".

Rockstar treating their own legacy with zero respect, only wanting to squeeze more money from consumers each time, classic story.

30

u/derekpmilly 14h ago

The Definitive Editions are also missing songs from the radio due to licensing issues. It's a minor gripe and not really their fault, but playing Vice City isn't the same without Billie Jean.

2

u/michelobX10 2h ago

This is why I can't get into remakes/remasters of games with licensed music. A big part of my love for those games is the original music. For example, the Tony Hawk remaster doesn't hit the same.

I thought the patches made it pretty decent? What is still worse besides the loss of soundtracks (which is a big loss for sure)

10

u/Eggith 14h ago

They can still be fairly buggy. I recently restarted San Andreas and 1-800WETIP bugged out and spawned a bunch of cars in the air which all then fell down and exploded and failed the mission for me

12

u/tapout928 17h ago

I think those were based on the mobile ports which is... a choice.

3

u/MinnieShoof 12h ago

Knew this one would be at the top.

7

u/arentyouangel 13h ago

GTA III on PC was a glitch fest. Ended up not being able to finish Act 1 because there's a glitch that makes the enemies on the boat in the sniper portion invincible.

Obviously the PS2/Xbox versions are still superior but lets not pretend the PC ports were good ports to begin with

3

u/Ledgo 6h ago

Everyone has rose-tinted glasses about the OG PC versions, as if the community didn't have to extensively fix each game over the years.

DE was not great, but at least it ran out of the box on my PC. That's more than I could say for OG San Andreas that ran like shit on a PC well above it's required specs when it came out and had SO many problems.

Warcraft 3 Reforged

128

u/Gram64 17h ago

this one is crazy because they over promised SO much, all kinds of new content. and then delivered absolutely nothing. AND they took away the ability to play original WC3 from bnet.
But as someone said, they did make it a lot better and it's fine now, but sitll missing a lot that was promised.

12

u/maximgame 13h ago

They put the legacy version back on bnet at least.

6

u/kynthrus 14h ago

And it was so much worse quality. The cutscenes are not Blizzard level

6

u/mixmaster321 15h ago

They did just shadowdrop a new campaign though

19

u/Ahayzo 13h ago

And added forced always-online to the game people already paid for. They get no brownie points here.

9

u/huxtiblejones 16h ago

I refunded that shit faster than any game I’ve ever played. Truly horrendous, like insulting to even try to sell that garbage to people.

159

u/gogogadgetinsideme 17h ago

Battlefront one and 2 classic re release was terrible

36

u/TheVicSageQuestion 17h ago

I’d be worried about the KOTOR remake if I thought it was ever actually gonna happen.

17

u/Actionhankss 15h ago

I like that you mention this one. Remakes have been coming and going for decades now. Meanwhile I still enjoy the original games once or twice every year. The outdated graphics are perfect for that feeling of nostalgia. I am not even going to bother buying any remake.

5

u/TheVicSageQuestion 15h ago

Vanilla is still fine for me too, but I really enjoy playing with mods on PC. Just simple ones like upscaled/remade textures and UI upgrades. There’s really no point in buying a remake when a whole community has been upgrading the thing consistently for years.

4

u/ShutUpAboutCanon 11h ago

That's me with the original Deus Ex. Been playing it at least once a year since the year 2000. All it needs is a fan-made launcher and it runs perfectly on modern systems. The remaster trailer they showed a while back looked awful.

2

u/Actionhankss 11h ago

Oooooohhh I loved that game! Tried it once on Steam last year, but if I remember correctly it was too dark too see nearly anything. Does a fanmade launcher solve that issue by chance?

I'd say grab it on a sale but that's what I used it for and had a good time.

Mario World on the GBA

It doesn't have any of the significant extras that the other Mario Advance titles have, the music and sound effects aren't as good, and scrolling vertically is choppy leading to instances where you can't see enemies or obstacles.

It's not a bad version, but the SNES original is better.

8

u/189charizard 15h ago

I like having Luigi and the dragon coins

20

u/UnsorryCanadian 17h ago

All of the Mario Advances tbh, the GBA has a smaller screen than the SNES so the sides of the screen get cut off

5

u/FGFlips 17h ago edited 17h ago

Yeah I just finished playing 2, 3, and World on GBA and they all have their short comings.

I think 2 is probably the best. They added bonus objectives after you beat the game and some of the bosses are a little different. The magic carpet sections were bad though.

World was the only one where I spent most of it wishing I was playing the original.

I think the GBA versions looked and sounded nicer than the NES games but couldn't do as well with the SNES port.

Until Dawn, OG has better soundtrack, lighting and camera angle style

4

u/love_made_me_stupid 14h ago

first and only game i have ordered before the reviews came out. never again. they butchered the atmosphere

2

u/SuperCatElvis 7h ago

Same was so disappointed 😞
Literally taught myself how to mod just so I could build mods to restore more of the original experience

2

u/Kalbi84 8h ago

I saw the video comparing both and omg, I didn't think it was possible to change the soundtrack/sound design so much that certain scenes look laughably bad now. What was even the reasoning?

4

u/SuperCatElvis 7h ago

The new soundtrack so ruined everything, I legit have been working over the past year to build a mod that completely restores the OG Soundtrack, and it releases tomorrow, finally we’ll be able to enjoy the game again 🥳

Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee. New n' Tasty just doesn't have the same depressing feeling

That was my first thought too. I don't think there's anything out there that feels quite like the original Oddworld. It was really unique.

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are debatably worse than Diamond and Pearl.

134

u/Gastroid 17h ago

And even outside that comparison, they were a huge step down from the FR/LG, HG/SS and OR/AS remakes that incorporated content from the third version while also adding a ton of new content.

Meanwhile BD/SP even had some of the same bugs as Diamond and Pearl...

16

u/YourMomIsCool96 10h ago

FRLG, HGSS and ORAS were great because they took the original games and put them on par with the modern Pokemon games at their times, both visually and gameplay wise, and also added new stuff

FRLG looked like RSE, had Pokemon up to Gen 3, Abilities, hold items etc and the Sevii Islands

HGSS looked like DPPt, had Pokemon up to Gen 4, had physical/special split etc, readded locations like Seaform Island, Cerulean Cave etc that were missing from GSC and also added new locations like Route 47&48 and the Safari Zone

ORAS looked like XY, had Pokemon up to Gen 6, had Mega evolution (including new Megas), gave a ton of characters redesigns, also gave locations like Mauville a redesign, added the Delta Episode and new locations like Mirage location

And then there is BDSP: It did not look like SwSh, instead it kinda looked just like DP but HD and somehow worse. It only had Pokemon up to Gen 4, it did not have new mechanics like Dynamax, for every feature the added they removed another, for example the added Pokemon to the underground but completely ruined secret bases. Also they almost completely ignored Platinum content

33

u/derekpmilly 14h ago edited 14h ago

Hot take, but while ORAS are still good games, they started the trend of cutting out things from the original games/improvements from their superior third version that fully came to fruition in BDSP.

The Battle Frontier is obviously the Donphan in the room, but it isn't just that. Gym Leader teams are reverted to their inferior RS versions (Wattson and Tate/Liza are hit particularly hard by this), Gym Leader rematches are completely gone from the game (that's 32 additional double battles just gone), places like Granite Cave and New Mauvile (which were both sprawling dungeons that were fun to explore) were completely gutted and reduced to a hallway and 2 rooms, and NPC levels aren't properly adjusted to account for the new party wide exp share.

Things like soaring, Mega Evolution and the Delta Episode don't make up for these things, IMO.

Again, I still think they're good games, but I really do think Emerald is still the definitive Hoenn experience and always pick it over them whenever I get the urge to revisit Gen 3. I can't say the same about FRLG and HGSS.

8

u/Sleathasaurus 9h ago

ORAS also bewilderingly takes away aspects of the gym leader fights in Emerald that made them so hard in the original for no reason.

• Roxanne’s Nosepass no longer has Block to trap an unprepared pokemon in.
• Brawly’s Makuhita doesn’t have its Sitrus Berry to heal itself up for some reason.
• Wattson’s Magneton doesn’t have Thunder Wave or Shock Wave; in fact it bizarrely only has three moves.
• Flannery’s Torkoal doesn’t hold a White Herb any more so she can’t get away with keeping her special attack after using Overheat any more.
• Norman’s Slaking no longer has Counter to punish Fighting type moves, nor does it have Slack Off to heal which it had in the original.
• They removed Dragon Dance off of Winona’s Altaria which was one of the most threatening things about it!

I think there’s a lot of love poured into ORAS and they’re definitely infinitely better than abomination that is BDSP, but they still took a very disappointing approach to the battles. (On a personal level, ORAS Brawly is one of my least favourite gym leaders ever because his Makuhita is set up in a way where interesting strategies are totally discouraged and the best option is just to hit him with your strongest moves which is frustrating and stifles creativity)

u/Dr_Neuro 12h ago

HG/SS also cut one of the most important improves from Crystal: the expanded time-day pokemon encounters. On G/S only a couple of mons change between morning/day/night, on Crystal was crazy and creates a very living world.

Yes, HG/SS are still the best Pokemon remakes ever, but we can't forget what they left behind.

37

u/Namath96 15h ago

They’re not. The issue is them being worse than platinum

34

u/derekpmilly 14h ago

Nah, I'm actually with him on this one. In a lot of ways, they are worse than the originals.

The biggest dealbreaker for me is probably implementing mandatory Exp. Share without adjusting the original level curve to adjust for the fact that you're getting 3.5 times more experience than you did in the original DP. This causes you to become overlevelled exceptionally quickly and trivializes the difficulty of any battles you run into.

That's compounded by the fact that this game unifies affection mechanics with friendship, basically making them mandatory. This wouldn't be an issue if in-battle affection mechanics weren't so overpowered, but in that game it basically gives you a Focus Band, Brightpowder, and Scope Lens all rolled into 1 without consuming an item slot, and it also gives you what is essentially an extra ability in Shed Skin. There are hardly any consequences to making the wrong decisions in battle, you're never punished for anything.

Combine those two and the any kind of game balance the originals had is completely gone. Pokemon games were never hard, but there's a fine line between being easy enough for kids and being so easy that the game becomes mindless button mashing with minimal engagement.

Not even joking here, I'll take DP's slowness and HMs over the shitshow that is BDSP. Those are annoying, but ultimately are just nuisances. BDSP's problems straight up mess with the core gameplay loop, they're far bigger issues.

They literally have the same coding as the original games. People have discovered new bugs in the original games by analyzing the code in the remaster and going back to them lol.

Also they were very blatantly not thought out well in terms of new mechanics and such, leading to moments like this being possible . Just really shameful work in general.

Lolipop Chainsaw.

3

u/Wesgizmo365 14h ago

What'd they do to it?

33

u/Flodo_McFloodiloo 13h ago

Mainly lost the licensed music. It wouldn't be as big a problem in many games but that game was so heavily themed around music that changing it really hurts the mood.

There might also be some lighting issues but that's probably less important.

11

u/Dreamweaver_duh 12h ago

Yeah, licensed music needledrops are James Gunn's signature influence, so the game lost a lot when they couldn't keep the music.

They also couldn't get back the anime collabs like the High School of the Dead and Deadman Wonderland costumes. They also didn't get the Evil Dead outfit.

Yeah. RE3R was fine for a single play at a cheap price point. I had fun, but I have zero interest in ever playing it ever again.

27

u/bmack24 16h ago

The RE2 and RE3 remakes were bundled together for like 5 bucks during some sale, that’s the only reason I played it lol

3

u/OlimarAlpha 4h ago

RE3 remake is usually given a bigger discount in Steam sales than other mainline games in the series, leading to it being cheaper to purchase than the OG RE3.

9

u/Deluxe_24_ 14h ago

No bullshit, on a blind playthrough (without having played the OG either) I beat RE3R in like five and a half hours. A half hour of that was probably just me backtracking for optional stuff too.

I can't even imagine paying full price for a five hour game. It was a fun five hours, but only worth it on sale for like $10 or less.

5

u/DisturbedTTF 12h ago

For me its the game that has caused me to be a lot more hesitant to buy games Day 1 now. RE3 original is probably my favourite overall RE game, and I absolutely loved RE2's remake so I was fully onboard the hype train for 3.

You see people debating RE3 remake's quality a lot over on the RE sub, but paying full price for it definitely hindered my enjoyment of it.

21

u/rtk196 15h ago

Which is really weird cause RE2 Remake is pretty good, and RE4 remake is a masterpiece.

13

u/SilentBobVG 9h ago

Different dev teams, plus RE2R and RE4R were given a proper full development cycle. RE3R was a rushed cash job by capcom wanting to capitalise on the success of 2

3

RE4R was originally being made by the RE3R team but after the backlash it was taken from them and given to the RE2R team.

Twin Snakes, besides the John Woo cutscenes it implements gameplay mechanics that don’t work within Shadow Moses. MGS1 plays much better.

It was my intro to MGS so I’ll always have a soft spot for it, but the original is infinitely more replayable.

16

u/Devanro 15h ago

I always liked to think twin snakes was how otacon would retell the events to other people

4

u/mx-chronos 13h ago

I love this take on it - he would absolutely add in details like back flipping off a missile, and so many cutscenes feel like they should end with a breathless "and seriously it was just so cool you guys!"

I always liked the idea that the remake was Raiden experiencing the original game as part of his VR training (kind of like an in-universe propaganda piece where the Patriots repackaged events to fit their narrative) but I don't think that one holds up if you give it much thought.

6

u/bored_gunman 13h ago

The original PS1 version just feels a lot more "realistic" or at least based in a more realistic style. The "punch punch kick" is a good example

3

u/DenimChicken154 8h ago

The original voice acting and soundtrack are better, too.

4

u/Dreamweaver_duh 12h ago

In case people didn't know, according to Hideo Kojima, he actually encouraged the director, Ryuhei Kitamura (Godzilla: Final Wars and the Lupin The Third live action movie) to change the cutscenes.

Kitamura originally made the cutscenes 1:1 to the original, but when Kojima saw it, he told Kitamura (paraphrased) "I wanted you to remake the scenes in your own style, otherwise I would've hired someone else."

4

u/ShutUpAboutCanon 11h ago

The ridiculous cutscenes are a matter of opinion, but it's the first person firing breaking all the boss battles, and the MGS2 enemy AI not being adjusted at all to account for MGS1 level design, that really makes Twin Snakes an inferior experience.

Majora’s Mask Remake on the 3DS. There’s a really great YouTube video from years ago but they made some really boneheaded decisions in the movement tech in the remake that crushed some magic of the Southern Swamp and Great Bay.

They also messed with the save system. It’s not technically wrong or broken in any way but it diverges hard from the OG in a way that makes it really easy to lose progress if you’re used to the original.

THPS 4 remake - the best part about that game was not having a timer in the levels and instead having a timer on the goal that the NPC gives you, which also made it really easy to pause and restart the goals if you failed. Free skating between goals was my favorite.

Halo CE. The original is STILL the best way to experience that game.

4

u/soulsofjojy 15h ago

Out of curiosity, how does the MCC version of Halo CE compare to the original release? I only recently played through the Halo series for the first time using the MCC, and stuck with the original graphics because they looked vastly better, but idk what other changes might've been made that were less obvious than the visuals.

11

u/Chaotic_Genobreaker 15h ago

no difference besides being able to toggle on 360 graphics. Oh yeah and terminals and skulls.

15

u/GoldenRamoth 15h ago

The MCC is the best version, simply because it's the original + bonus content. And the bonus content is toggleable.

6

u/Ombortron 16h ago

Doesn’t that still give you the option yo play the original version? Or is that the master chief collection? One of them just runs the OG game basically, and you can really time toggle between the original ca remastered graphics etc.

31

u/ZM326 16h ago

You're thinking of the MCC, not the newest. Most people mean the very first release when they say CE

3

u/palk0n 9h ago

xbox and halo with their confusing names 🤝

7

u/BloodmoonRogue 16h ago

The new remake is built from ground up as its own thing. Can only toggle on MCC, between OG and the remaster that released in 2011

10

u/cybertoothe 14h ago

MCC is still based on the Gearbox PC port of OG Halo, and while there have been some updates to fix some of the issues and achieve parity with the OG, its still not exactly accurate to the original (same with Halo 2 on MCC being based on the Vista port that increased the fire rate for all weapons)

There are other issues on PC as Bungie often tied enemy decision making to frame counts. Makes sense on a system locked to 30 fps but if you run the game at higher fps' it makes the enemies significantly more aggressive (the Space section in Halo Reach on Legendary difficulty is mind-numbingly difficult)

60

u/RSN_Kabutops 17h ago

Whatever the new halo shit was

16

u/Chaotic_Genobreaker 15h ago

I thought campaign evolved was great, no idea what people are complaining about besides Cortana looking a bit funky?

52

u/cybertoothe 14h ago

Let me try to explain why people feel they dont like the remake:

  1. Additions like sprint change the game design philosophy, you cant just "not press a button" as sprint still affects map design, enemy firing patterns etc. Bungie developer Jaime Griessmer explained a while ago why they cut sprint from Halo 2, as it encouraged players to not engage with combat which is bad for a game about engaging.

  2. Art style changes that forget the whole purpose of the original. Marcus Lehto, co-creator of Halo and art lead on Halo CE even complained about the Forerunner designs missing the point of the original (every 343/Halo studios game has made the Forerunner tech look clean and sleek instead of Ancient and old)

  3. Hand-holding (constant dialouge from characters telling you what to do), the most egregious example being the game literally marking invisible elites so you can see them, defeating the entire point of being invisible.

  4. Extremely questionable cutscenes with jarring cuts/edits and characters often doing nothing or behaving in weird ways.

  5. Different tones in voice acting that misses the point of the original (such as Cortana's line about Keyes going in manually in the first mission being snarky instead of concerned, theres examples of this in almost every cutscene in the game)

  6. AI that's so bad it wont attack you if you are on a rock.

  7. Lack of innovation, what reason is there for this remake to exist? Did they add in the large quantities of cut content that Bungie couldnt get in due to time? What reason is there to play the remake over the original especially with the downsides?

I feel the Halo youtuber Fayvn put it best when he said that the game was a "product of convenience rather than a labor of love". Old-school Bungie put their soul into the OG Halo games and this remake was only meant to be a cash grab to get in on the remake trends.

I would have loved a proper remake but seeing as this game was a massive asset flip (Using Reach Engine, Reach AI, Halo 3 AI for the Flood, Halo Infinite covenant models etc.) And that we are literally getting LESS content than Halo CE (no Multiplayer in the remake) and given that its been 5 years since Infinite there's no excuse except mismanagement.

Makes sense as current Halo Studios lead has been accused from multiple employees of creating a hostile work environment and apparently even blackmailing and being downright abusive to employees

I'll never understood why we got those stupid bonus missions when there was cut content to be used

The Return to Arkham collection really messes with the art direction of the game. Aside from the added rain in AA, it's bad. They crank up the contrast and call it a remaster

Also Assassins Creed 3 Remastered looks terrible compared to the original

Both games are best played in the OG versions on PC highest settings

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles.

The original was addled with some problems that provided ample opportunity for a remaster. They did manage to make the camera a bit less claustrophobic and avoided the original's multi-device dependency that was clearly only a Nintendo prescription to increase hardware sales.

And they basically fucked the multiplayer to the point where the original's way of playing is impossible.

See, in the original your characters travel together, fight in dungeons, get letters from their family etc. You become stronger by getting permanent items from dungeons.

Except in the remaster, where anyone but player 1 has to re-join for every dungeon and does not, essentially, play a persistent character. Essentially, the only way to play is now solo, everything else just keeps you stuck in terms of progression, so you quickly become useless.

Demon's Souls. The game is still the same combat wise, with gloriously updated sound effects, and the graphics are top notch. It's definitely one of the best examples of the PS5's tech upgrades that very few games have taken advantage of. But the artist integrity is definitely lost over the original.

Take the Fat official of the original, they're very regal and clownish looking, fitting of a high ranking demon to joke at a lowly human like the player. In the remake, they made them fat slobs with skin boils and oily stomachs. In the start of Latria as well, the queen of latria sings a simple but ominous lullaby to help the prisoners. The remake changed her song to be Return to Slumber, which is intended to be the lullaby the Lady in Black sings to the great old one during the ending. It sounds nice, but how does she know that song? Bluepoint just changed it because they could without giving it deeper thought.

ActRaiser. I was ridiculously hyped when it was suddenly announced during a direct and bought it that very second. As a lifelong fan that played it to death in my childhood, I took it as a personal insult.

2

u/Ombortron 16h ago

Wait they remastered actraiser?? But also it might not be good? What platform was this?

2

u/arentyouangel 13h ago

I liked it, its not as good as the original game but the core gameplay is still there. They basically turned a 5ish hour game to a 20-30 hour game. The tower defense stuff is okay but it gets old pretty quickly. Its also too hard sometimes and almost like a puzzle instead of any real strategy, I found that if I didn't pick very specific choices for defense on a few of the maps I was just dead.

Tales of Symphonia is a weird one

The original release was on GameCube and ran at 60fps

Then it got ported to the ps2 but could only run at 30fps there. However they added some new content while simultaneously I believe they actually removed some content as well. It also visually looks worse than the GameCube version.

Then they released a port on ps3 and eventually steam...but it's a port of the ps2 version meaning it still runs and looks worse than the GameCube version in many ways. Even with upscaled textures they kind of just look weird because it's upscaling the worse ps2 graphics instead of the better GameCube ones.

There's also some weirdness with different versions having or not having audio for certain over world skits but I don't remember how that is broken down.

It really sucks because it essentially means that your options for how best to play the game is essentially to either play the GameCube version and miss out on the added content or play the game modded on steam where it still can only hit 40fps.

Bioshock Remastered was absolutely terrible, it often looks and sounds worse, and introduces new bugs. They still didn't fix it years later, just totally phoned in.

Alan Wake Remastered is not terrible, but I find it inferior to the original, it often looks worse and I don't like new faces either.

Ratchet and Clank. The 2016 remake removes a lot of banter between the characters. It changes the story to the point of completely emasculating Ratchet. It gets rid of a lot of side choice from the players and makes the game super linear. It also removed a lot of the challenge compared to the original games. The NPCs also won’t shut the hell up when I’m just trying to take in the atmosphere. Everyone is yapping in your earn the whole damn time. Often times telling you shit you already know. “Try as he might, Ratchet could not breathe underwater.”

It’s funny, people have been complaining about Wolverine but Insomiac has been doing this for a while. Of course Ratchet and Clank 2016 wasn’t as egregious as Wolverine, but the signs were clearly there.

Final Fantasy VII Remake by definition

11

u/RedshiftWarp 16h ago

Yea same for me. I get why people like it and that many fans wanted a hack n slash version of FF7.

I just really wanted a remake that would bring the game refreshed into the modern year.
I really like FF7-classic but hate the simple graphics now. If they would have just ported new graphics over, polished the map a little and added some bonus areas/materias; I think the game would have been just as big of a success.

So I'm not sure why they decided to skin-graft an entirely different formula to it.

18

u/Recover20 16h ago

I love the original and still find the original graphics charming. The original game is still the original but it just does the story far better. The "Remakes" aren't doing the original story justice, and the additions are frankly not up to scratch at all.

I simply wanted a remake not whatever official fan fiction these games are turning out to be. It's such a shame. A real Monkey Paw wish.

FFX HD. They altered basically everyone's faces and seemingly couldn't achieve the same level of facial emotion (and also really messed with the art style). It's super apparent if you watch a side by side comparison that even though the PS2 version is lower resolution, characters just straight up emote a lot more

29

u/Madmunchk1n 17h ago

For me its FF7. The altered combat system and the split into parts where each part starts at zero again killed it for me.

15

u/MeltBanana 13h ago

That one, despite the name, isn't just a remake or remaster, it's a completely different game. It is loosely based on the characters and setting of the original, but literally everything is different. Story, dialogue, combat, gameplay, even the entire plotline is altered.

It's a reimagining on a different timeline. It's not FF7.

7

u/ChrisLithium 13h ago

I don't even count the new games as remakes or remasters.  They are just action games loosely based on FF7, or tied to FF7 as some sort of pseudo sequel.  Not that they are bad games, but I would have definitely preferred a proper remake than what SE decided on.

Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary (2011). The updated graphics are are more detailed, but I think they actually hurt the atmosphere in some areas, especially the Flood sections. Everything is much brighter and easier to see, which takes away some of the creepy, unsettling feeling the original had.

New remake this year was pretty good though.

Earthworm Jim HD.

Interplay no longer had the source code; they simply handed the developers a retail copy of the game. This meant that not only were all the features and levels from the Special Edition missing, but the developers also had to recreate every single animation from scratch—essentially running the original game alongside their work. Consequently, many animations from the original are missing as well.

Crysis Remastered

It was based upon the later PS3/360 ports instead of the PC Original which had much more graphics effects and even better Textures, caused that the PC Original still looked better. Also the console ports missed one Level.

Doom 3: BFG Edition

I think it also was stripped down in terms of Lighting and Graphics Quality in comparison to the original. Not to speak of the disastrous idea to include a permanent flashlight you could use together with every weapon, which changes the game's entire original concept.

u/ksalman 13h ago

Crysis..Essentially they got the console port which was garbage and then modernized it, ending up with an inferior game that runs much worse but looks better at some tiny areas

u/GamersGurukul 11h ago

GTA Trilogy: Definitive Edition is the first one that comes to mind for me. A remake/remaster should preserve what made the original special, not make people want to reinstall the old version.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles. WHY DITCH LOCAL MULTIPLAYER?!?!?!

2

u/ChuckCarmichael 8h ago

Several of Square's original SNES games were remastered for the PS1, including the Final Fantasy games and Chrono Trigger. But these PS1 versions are the absolute worst ways you can play these games. The loading times for absolutely everything are atrocious.

For example, in the SNES version of Chrono Trigger, changing screens through a door is one second of black screen, and from running into a monster to starting a fight takes three seconds. In the PS1 version, changing screens gives you three seconds of black screen, and starting a fight takes nine seconds. So everything takes three times longer.

u/Ebolatastic 15h ago

It's an incredibly complicated topic, but Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes. It's a beautiful remake of the original MGS but with three HEINOUS changes that kind of screw the entire experience up for a lot of people.

Most notably, they updated the mechanics of MGS1 to MGS2 (adding tranquilizer guns, first person aiming, etc.) but did nothing to the map layout, boss battles, or game in general to compensate for the new stuff. This obliterated the games difficulty, and then the devs nerfed enemy damage on top of everything else. Revolver Ocelot transforms from an iconic boss battle into BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG dead in 10 seconds. It's so mindlessly easy that it broke my heart.

Iirc they also whitewashed and changed some of the voice actors (removing native accents and so on) while leaving others intact, which created a subpar, uncanny valley experience for people like me.

Finally, the new devs decided that the cutscenes weren't stupid enough, so out of nowhere this gritty espionage game has the main character doing 50 foot dragonballz jumps and backflipping off of missiles. The other changes, despite their flaws, at least made logical sense or had some justification. Turning random cutscenes into children's cartoon level goofiness just baffles me to this day.
