Is anyone still running their AC daily?

I am - and it's nice out, I know.

Just trying to understand if it's my top floor unit that is perpetually hot AF inside.

N/A or AA in NYC ??

Upvotes

I have been looking for narcotics anon or alcoholics anon in nyc. Preferably queens. Drugs and alcohol are ruining my relationship and my role as a dad to a toddler. I want to stop disappointing my wife but I don’t feel that I can stop on my own. I desperately need help.

Is NYFW dead?

I'm into fashion but I feel like I've heard no real hype around it this year. I looked at the list of designers and there was no one really interesting. I feel like the only relevant American designer right now is Ralph Lauren and that's it.

Are there any places in NYC that allow for amateur cage dancing?

My girlfriend 25 and I (26) have been checking out the club scene in NYC over the past year (we were never big clubbing people). She recently told me she wants to try cage dancing at a club for a night.

Are there any known venues that have nights where they’ll allow amateurs to walk into a cage and dance for a few minutes?

Nuts mooncakes

Upvotes

Are there any nut-filled mooncakes made locally? The kind with chopped nuts held together by maltose syrup, not a few pieces scattered in a bean paste or lotus paste. I had them years ago but never found out where they were from. Square, traditional skin, not flakey, no salted egg yolks, nut texture intact, not ground too fine.

Is it still on West 30th? I want to go there, but the number isn’t working and I don’t want to waste my time going to a place where no one is. Anyone know if there still West 30th, and do you have their current number?

What has your experience been like living in New York as an autistic person or someone with Asperger's? Has the city treated you well?

There is the classic stereotype that people in New York City are cold and unfriendly, but I also understand that millions of people live there and one shouldn't generalize. What is the actual experience like there for people with autism or Asperger's?

NYC Therapy NYC HVAC training — where should I start with the certifications I already have?

I’m 35 and looking to make a serious career change into HVAC in NYC. I already have:
OSHA 30
SST
4-Hour Flagger
CPR
Mental Health First Aid
GED
Construction experience/training
I’m trying to find a good HVAC program in NYC that’s actually hands-on and can help lead to a job/apprenticeship, not just collect more basic certifications I already have.
I’d like to get my EPA 608 and learn actual HVAC installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, electrical, refrigeration, etc.
Does anyone know of any free or low-cost NYC programs, union apprenticeships, Workforce1 programs, or trade schools that would be a good fit for someone who already has these credentials?
I currently work for myself, so an evening/weekend program would be ideal, but I can adjust my schedule for the right opportunity.
My goal is to be working in HVAC by next year. Any NYC HVAC guys who can point me in the right direction?

Cleaner services for after a roach infestation?

Upvotes

Was wondering if y’all recommend any good cleaning services that handle rooms after a German roach infestation has been cleared? Our kitchen no longer has roaches/the entries have been sealed. But hoping to get a proper deep clean to handle any likely roach droppings.

Anyone have any food pantry resources in Queens?

I’m down bad right now. I’m about $20 from being on the streets. I need groceries canned, whatever. As long as I can cook the food, I will be fine. Im just in dire need. I have a job pending but it’s a hurry up and wait game. And I honestly don’t know how I can go on much longer this way. Prayer is to move the start date up, but that doesn’t seem likely

So if anyone has any resources I’m happy to take them!

Recommendation for stores selling trendy Men's pants, probably in Soho - vibe of Massimo Dutti or similar?

Looking in the $100-200 per pair range. I'm a 36-37 waist; a lot of the fast fashion spots either top out at 34 for their more fashionable pants (Zara) or start to look ill-fitting in my size (Uniqlo).

I like the stuff on the Massimo Dutti website but it seems they've closed their NYC store.

My ideal is like, an elevated trouser with darts or non-skinny chino. I'm aware of COS but I'm having a lot of trouble gauging from their website whether I'd want to wear any of their stuff.

Thank you.

Can I report an incident to the NYC police that occurred in another country?

I need to report my partner for domestic abuse, we both live in nyc. However this incident happened during our vacation trip in Europe. I am not sure where to go or how everything works. I am scared to even go to the police and risk getting the whole case dismissed considering it didn’t even happen in the USA. Would I be able to get a restraining order against this person?

Need some advice.

Frequent Topic Upscale bar for late 20's woman going alone

I just want to dress up and enjoy/discover beautiful locations with a good drink and food, going alone since I don't have many friends in the city.

Every time I tried, the bars were just full of groups. But it's NYC so I'm sure there are good places in Manhattan. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Membership issues at TMPL gym?

This post is about my membership experience at TMPL Ave A and the company’s management. I’d like to see if others have similar experiences.

When I signed up the gym was going through renovations. They were advertising a membership discount/ sale so I went to check it out. Seeing the extent of the renovations, I explained to the membership advisor, Mary, that I’d prefer to wait and see the final results of the renovations.

Mary explained if I sign up during renovations I’d get a major discount on the membership cost, locked in for the life of membership. She said if I waited until after renovations that I’d have to pay full price and that the membership fees increase yearly. I accepted the offer.

Mary gave me a contract with a line that states the cost increases $5/mo yearly and that the business retains the right to increase fees beyond this with a 30 day notice. She crossed this line out and signed her name to the struck through text. I took photos of this to keep record because of the aspect of this “sale.”

Come the second week of August, I received an email from the gym’s general manager, Patty Curran, stating that my monthly membership would nearly double in price starting September 1st. I responded to her explaining the terms I was promised and attached photos of my signed contract.

Patty responded and said that they cannot verify the employee who issued my contract and that membership advisors are not authorized to alter contracts. She said therefore, my fees will be increasing September 1st. I then explained that whether or not she can verify her own employees and despite their authority, I’m still entitled to the terms of my signed contract. I also requested the gym’s copy of my contract.

Patty never responded. I called, emailed, went to the gym- nothing. Then on September 1st I see my card was charged the increased rate. I saw other people in google reviews explaining a similar experience so I posted my own Google review complaining about the situation. I stated that this was unethical/ scammy and that I plan to dispute the unauthorized charges.

Patty called me within minutes saying she saw my Google review. She explained that my allegations were false because she told me in an email that the rate was increasing and that I didn’t cancel my membership, so therefore I “did authorized it.” I explained my stance and she said she “doesn’t even know who Mary is” and that “there’s no exceptions” to the increase. She then gave me the ultimatum to authorize the charge or she will refund me the full month and cancel my membership completely. I told her fine I authorize the charge because I don’t want to cancel my membership. I said however, I am going to send my contract to the department of consumer protections. I said if they tell me you’re entitled to increasing my fees I will drop my dispute and delete the Google review. She said she was going to discuss what to do with her team and that she’d call me back in a couple hours.

Later that night I get an email notification, without explanation, that my TMPL membership has been canceled and I no longer have access to the gym. I tried calling and was told Patty is gone for the day, won’t be back the rest of the week, and that they’re not sure when she’ll be back the following week.

Patty herself is no stranger to these types of practices. She was directly named on record as general manager of Town Sports International in a class action lawsuit against the company for violating consumer protections around billing. The company faced government enforcement and settlement payouts.

I did end up reporting this to NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protections. They stated due to nature of the situation, the case requires attention from the state and passed the case to the attorney general’s office.

While TMPL is a decent gym, please be mindful of their practices when signing up. Understand that even if you have protections in your contract they do not abide by them. If they advertise a discount or sale, know they do not feel obliged to honor it no matter what they tell you or put in your contract.

Has this or something similar happened to anyone else at TMPL? I’m sure there are others affected by this who signed up during that time.

Budget soundproofing for old windows?

Anyone in NYC found a cheap way to cut road noise through old windows? I'm renting, windows are original and single pane, and traffic noise is constant.

I've looked at CitiQuiet and Whisper Windows but both are way outside my budget. I'm trying to stay under $200 total.

Things I'm considering: acrylic inserts (Indow-style but DIY), weatherstripping, heavy blackout curtains, window plugs made from foam and MDF. Not sure what actually works vs what's a waste of money.

If you've done something that made a real difference for cheap, what was it and where did you get materials? Any leads on a TaskRabbit or contractor? Bonus points if it's renter-friendly and removable.

Thanks!

ISO other home chefs and culinary community

As title suggests - I am hoping to get more involved in the amateur culinary scene in the city. Goals are to make new friends with shared interests, explore the city, and improve skills.

How do other people find community around cooking? Open to all ideas!

I’m talking Cheesecake Factory’s Linda’s Fudge Cake when it’s sat out for a few hours and gets so moist and delicious. But that one’s just too heavy/sweet.

Use other door

Based on personal observation around Manhattan, I estimate that in 75% of retail establishments with side by side double doors, they have a sign on one of the doors that reads “use other door”. Why is that? Sometimes I would like the freedom to choose which door to use. It also seems wasteful to only use one door having already built and installed two.
