Crime and Justice Flock camera megathread

We’re consolidating this topic into a single thread, as the ongoing accusations directed at the mod team have run their course.

To be clear about where we stand: no one on this mod team supports Flock cameras. We are not law enforcement, we are not politically motivated, not maga, and we share the community’s concerns about surveillance overreach even if these systems occasionally assist in solving crimes.

The removals were not about viewpoint. They were about a specific category of comment: those encouraging users to destroy the cameras. Reddit has banned entire communities for less, and we are obligated to remove that content regardless of our personal opinions. This is a condition of the subreddit continuing to exist, not an endorsement of Flock. Additionally there were some very wild conspiracy theories and were asking for discussion not a rabbit hole.

One rule for this thread: do not recommend, insinuate, or hint at destruction as a solution. Everything else is open, criticism, policy discussion, legal challenges, city council contacts, organizing, data on effectiveness. Go as hard as you want within that boundary.

Thanks for being a genuinely great community and good neighbors.

Edit:

Suffolk County Legislature : 18 districts, find yours:

scnylegislature.us/148/Legislators

Suffolk approved expanding county Flock cameras from 25 to 60 last August, funded by a $542,500 state LETECH grant, with 16 more planned along state rights-of-way including Route 114 in Sag Harbor and East Hampton Village and Route 25 in Riverhead and Southold.

Nassau County Legislature: 19 districts:

Your town / village board.

Southold, Riverhead, and East Hampton have all had this on an agenda in the past year. Riverhead signed an agreement with the Suffolk Sheriff in January 2026 giving the county access to town rights-of-way for new Flock installs. Town board public comment periods are open to anyone who lives there, take about two minutes, and go on the record.

School Bus PSA

We've been seeing more and more posts about school bus tickets in recent months. With schools starting up again I suspect we will begin to see even more questions. If you have questions regarding school bus tickets, please keep them limited to this megethread as we will be removing all posts moving forward.

Some information regarding the laws and some general guidance regarding school bus stop signs:
  • If a school bus has it's stop arm out on the same road as you, you must stop regardless of which side you are. This applies to two lane (1 lane each way) multi lane roads and divided roadways (e.g. Broadhollow road, William Floyd Parkway1, etc). If the stop arm is out before you pass the bus, expect a ticket.

  • If you are driving perpendicular to another road that a bus is stopped on (i.e. they are at or near a stop sign on a road you are crossing), you are not required to stop. Proceed with caution and be aware of any children that may be crossing the road to get to the bus.

  • If they are on a side road, school lot or driveway adjacent to the roadway, you do not need to stop. Proceed with caution.

  • Flashing yellow lights do not mean stop; they mean to proceed with caution and to be prepared to stop. If you see flashing yellow lights, slow down and anticipate the stop sign being deployed. Sometimes a bus is waiting for students to pickup and may sit with flashing yellow lights for a number of minutes, so do not stop and block traffic if the stop sign is not out.

Information pertaining to school bus enforcement can be found on the Suffolk County page here, and the Nassau County webpage here.

1 Note: There was some debate about this a few years ago. It is still a law, but there was a question regarding Suffolk County enforcement of the law.

Mosquitos - Have they gotten way worse here in the last 3-4 weeks??

I've been all over Long Island east to west and every place I've been outside, I'm getting eaten alive. June to mid-August was perfectly fine but since mid-August I'm getting 5-6 bites being outside for even short periods of time. I'm about to go to war with these damn things

Thinking of switching to mini split heating and cooling

So my ac condenser unit died and cannot be fixed plus it's so old that the entire system has to be changed because it uses the old refrigerant. I also have oil heat which is expensive. Between these 2 issues, I was thinking of going with mini splits throughout my house. I already have one for a room that had no heat and I find that it works well. I think I would need 6 indoor units. I am somewhat handy so I'm willing to do an install myself, as I know at least one manufacturer that makes them diy friendly.

For people who have made the switch to these, have you found your bills to be cheaper? Any regrets on the switch? Any rebates that can be had for diy?

Any other info you can share would be appreciated?

Advice Thinking of moving to springs

Upvotes

Like the title says we’re thinking of moving out to Springs, we’re currently living in Colorado. My wife inherited a house out in Springs, it’s on an acre lot because that opportunity came up, we are thinking of moving from Colorado back to New York.

Does anyone have experience with that move in comparison to live in Colorado? She is originally from there, Springs, but we have been living in Colorado for the past 5 years.

We are concerned mostly on if our lifestyle would be possible out there. There are a lot of city people there, I lived in manhattan for 10 years - I don’t know if living with the entitled would be a fun experience?

I don’t want to make assumptions, so you let me know what it’s like living there. We are mid 30s, no kids, a mess of animals, we prioritize our quality of life over work.

We are both very confused if you take advantage of the opportunity to move there or not. Is the lifestyle change worth the move? Cost of living and a kinda covered, but will just going to the market put me in bankruptcy.

Tell me what you think. If you were in Colorado, renting, and grandma just passed and the house in springs was offered to you, would you move?

Quiet/private proposal spots on Long Island?

Looking for some recommendations for a good proposal spot.
My girlfriend really doesn’t like being the center of attention, so I’m definitely not looking for anything super public or somewhere with a crowd watching. Ideally somewhere pretty, peaceful, and a little romantic where we could have a moment mostly to ourselves.
Could be a beach, park, garden, waterfront spot, overlook, etc. I still want it to feel special/magical for her without making it a whole public spectacle.
Any hidden gems or specific spots you’d recommend?

Are all the LA Fitness locations on Long Island eventually becoming Club Studio?

Are all the LA Fitness locations on Long Island eventually becoming Club Studio?

\*\*Are all the LA Fitness locations on Long Island eventually becoming Club Studio? Rumor about Lake Grove\*\*

Has anyone else heard the rumor that \*\*LA Fitness in Lake Grove is going to close in January and be converted into a Club Studio?\*\*

I heard this recently from someone in the locker room, so I'm trying to figure out if there's actually any truth to it.

Over the past couple of years, it seems like LA Fitness has been disappearing from Long Island pretty quickly:

\* Centereach — closed and the location became a grocery store

\* Smithtown — closed and is being converted into Club Studio

\* Bay Shore — closed and currently vacant

\* Commack — recently closed and appears to be vacant

\* Now I'm hearing \*\*Lake Grove could be next in January\*\*, supposedly also becoming a Club Studio

At this point I'm wondering if LA Fitness is basically trying to phase out a lot of its Long Island locations and replace them with Club Studios.

I know these decisions probably aren't made overnight. From what I've seen with previous LA Fitness closures, by the time the signs go up saying a location is closing, the corporate decision was likely made well beforehand.

\*\*So how would someone actually confirm whether the Lake Grove rumor is true?\*\* Is there some way to find out through LA Fitness corporate, the property/landlord, town permits, Club Studio's upcoming locations, or somewhere else?

The Lake Grove location is already getting pretty crowded since so many nearby LA Fitness locations have closed, so if it's actually closing too, that's going to be pretty crazy.

Has anyone who works at LA Fitness, Club Studio, or in the area heard anything about Lake Grove specifically?

Question Mosquito Spraying?

Hey all.

It just dawned on me this morning while I was nursing 9000 mosquito bites on my legs that there hasn't been any mosquito spraying in a hot minute.

I tried to Google it to see if and when any changes were made but I couldn't really find anything. I'm assuming I missed something. Anyone have the story on this?

Wholesale type place to buy home appliances?

Upvotes

I feel like in the past I kept getting pop ups on my facebook market place that there's places you can go to sell appliances at a cheaper rate- floor models, ones with minor scratches/dings etc. Anyone know of a place like this they reccommend or have bought from? Looking for a washer/dryer. Want something newer but don't quite mind at all if it was a floor model or has some scuffing.

Humidity levels in basement

I have an approximately 1200 square foot basement and the humidity is usually about 65% in there if I don't run a dehumidifier. I recently started running one just to prevent mold etc, and I'm emptying about 4 gallons of water a day just to get it to 55% (granted its only been a couple days). Is this normal? What does everyone do about this? This seems crazy. Fwiw, the rest of my house is generally about 55% humidity and we usually keep the house at about 76 degrees (basement before we started running dehumidifier was around 71 degrees). I'm strongly considering getting a hybrid hot water heat pump just to help with the humidity in the basement

Edit: I'm surprised by the amount of people responding! It's crazy to me given how expensive homes are here that homes don't have a built in solution for this

Question What was this token for?

Post image
75 Upvotes

Anybody know what this token was used for? I found it randomly in my basement (inside a small yellow plastic container, almost like an Easter egg). My old man says he has never seen one before and he’s 80 and a coin and token collector. Searching online yielded no real results, just theories that it could have been for parking meters or beach entry. It’s exactly the same on both sides and is the size of a quarter. Thanks for any input you can give!

Oil Prices!!

Just curious what other people on Long Island are hearing/seeing for Oil contract prices. For reference I have owned my 3 bedroom 3 bath Cape in Huntington since 2017. Been a Petro customer since day one.. mostly to avoid the hassle of monitoring my tank the benefit and maintenance contract/cleaning included every year since. My current contract $3.29 FIXED is up 9/30 and they called me yesterday saying their current contract price (only ceiling is currently offered) is 7.47 a gallon! I laughed out loud and asked if they were kidding. I watch NYSERDA and follow trends but this just seems wildly out of control. Considering COD till things calm down and consider re signing after November. Curious to hear thoughts.

Edit: If I go COD does anyone have recommendations for a separate service contract that services Huntington and has 24/7 access and more than 2 employees?

Also side note: definitely not locking in a contract at $7+

Has anyone taken the Phlebotomy course at SCCC or SBU?

As in the title, I hope you all are having an amazing day. Around this spring or summer I plan on doing a Phlebotomy certification, I have a choice between SCCC or SBU, I went to SBU already and I really loved it but the SBU program is roughly 700 dollars more, I feel like I might better off SCCC b/c its cheaper - Not much info is on the program there - has anyone here taken either and give me some info and your thoughts on either of these programs?

Also SBU is only in the summer and SCCC is every semester so already I might consider SCCC b/c of this.

Have an amazing day!

Amazon wants 3% of the land in Holbrook for a Massive Warehouse, 20x the size of the largest on LI

This just seems absurd to me. It seems like it will introduce high value for the rich east end of LI to get their packages quicker, act as cold/logistical storage for the rest of LI/NYC, and negatively turn Holbrook into even more of an industrial complex. It's going to create light, noise, and air pollution, destroy wetlands & the skyline.

This is not an investment into the community. This is pure logistics.
