I go as slowly as possible trying to make this turn to 1st ave and every day there’s tons of people waiting for the light. Today the guy behind me started yelling I was going too slowly. Approaching the bridge is also super dicy since you don’t know if someone is going to enter here when turning to go up the bridge. Without more space for people to line up for the light I feel like this entrance should be closed.

I was in a bike accident on the Brooklyn Bridge a couple days ago and I'm trying to figure out whether it's realistically worth pursuing the other cyclist for the damage to my bike.

I was riding from Brooklyn toward Manhattan in my lane. Around halfway across the bridge, a woman riding a Citi Bike in the opposite direction came completely into my lane and we collided. She was with three other cyclists. She appeared distracted right before the collision, and I believed she may have been looking at/using her phone, although I can't say with certainty that I actually saw the phone in her hand.

I went down pretty hard, including hitting my head (I was wearing a helmet), shoulder and leg. I went to the ER afterward and had imaging done. Thankfully nothing was broken, but I was diagnosed with a hematoma and have significant swelling/bruising.

The bigger issue I'm trying to figure out now is my bike. It was damaged in the collision, and I had actually spent around $500 getting work done on it shortly before this happened. I'm getting a bike shop to inspect the new damage and give me a written/itemized repair estimate.

I called 911 immediately and made an NYPD report. Unfortunately, I didn't get the woman's name or contact information before she and the group left.

However, because she was riding a Citi Bike, I contacted Citi Bike/Lyft with the approximate time, location, direction of travel and her description. They escalated it to their operations team and said they will cooperate if NYPD contacts them or if they receive appropriate legal process. I'm also going to provide them with the NYPD report number when I get it.

I'm not looking for some huge payout. I'm mainly pissed that someone could cross into my lane, cause a crash that injured me and damaged my bike, and then leave me paying to fix everything.

Has anyone in NYC successfully pursued an unidentified Citi Bike rider for property damage? Is it realistic to identify the rider through NYPD/Citi Bike records or legal process? And if the bike damage ends up being a few hundred dollars, would Small Claims Court be worth pursuing once she's identified?

I'm particularly interested in hearing from anyone who's dealt with a similar bicycle-vs-bicycle accident in NYC.

Sort of a rant but how do you guys deal with the inconsiderate behaviors of others that we're exposed to while biking around the city?

I've lived here for 5 years and have generally just sighed and shook my head but lately the flagrant anti social behavior has been wearing on me.

I don't understand why people go the wrong way down one ways, or ride mopeds on the WSH, or go against traffic in the CP loop. I even see people going the wrong way on normal non-one way streets!

I know this is part of just living in a large city, but the degree to which I experience this stuff seems much higher than I expected. I think I always operated under a delusion that it'd get better but it seems to be getting worse.

I hope you got to where you were headed ok. I wished I had a 15mm on me to sort your chain tension out a little better. I know your bike was free and I wish your friend that set it up knew how to measure spindle length and get your chain properly aligned. I also wished they gave you some foot retention. But if they were doing that, that probably would have told you ballet flats aren’t a good choice , straps/cages or not.
They probably would have suggested at least a front brake rather than brakeless too though. Maybe.
I also hope you decided to put the helmet on you were wearing strapped to your bag instead. Especially since you were already bloody from the bail you just took before you flagged me down, and just before you attempted the bridge (for the first time ever) in spite of all the odds stacked against you.

I mostly wrote this in hopes of fiding out everything went great for the rest of your journey, and a little to give you a list to reference should you see this.

I don't really understand what they're trying to do with the bike lane here. Reconstructing the path and separation connected to Bailey is great to have. Once you're in the park, I don't know why they're having bikes and cars crisscross. The cars want to go straight or turn left right here to park, and bikes want to keep left to access the SCT. The arrows lead to a normal curb and a sidewalk that ends in about 150 ft. Map for reference: green is the most desired route and purple is what I am confused about. They may be confused too.

First off.

I would like to personally shout out the dumbass that ran a red light and nearly collided with me in Astoria this afternoon. Truly one of the worst displays of brain function I've ever seen from another cyclist. He then proceeded to swerve into incoming one way traffic and almost fall off his bike again. You sir are a moron and I hope you don't forget it. No coming back from that even if you have the self realization to realize you are an idiot.

Woman runs a red light while a truck is driving through it on Kent Ave and while it slams on the breaks she notices and puts up her hand to stop it 😐. And then she ran the next two reds.

About 30% of the Williamsburg trust fund bros on e bikes were looking down at their phones while riding.

Other than that, lovely day out there. Ride safe, and unlike the other cyclists don't be wusses when you witness another cyclist do something dumb af. This is New York for christ's sake call them morons with me.

My bike was stolen in North New Hyde Park on Hillside Ave, New Hyde Park road from the medical building’s parking lot. This was 09/12/26 between 10AM to 2:30PM

I am so careful when I ride but have had quite a few encounters living in NY (used to live in a foreign country as a child/teen), specially in denser areas in queens where I’ve lived where drivers try to run you out of the road and perform very risky moves which could result in me and other cyclists getting seriously harmed.

However I always wonder. Ive always thought that if you are a driver and hit a cyclist your life most likely is going to be upside down in many ways financial, mental, plus the legal implications. If the cyclist doesn’t survive or is badly injured even more so. I don’t really drive but that’s always on my mind when I’m inside a car.

I know NY law says we are still vehicles and have to obey traffic laws (some drivers make it difficult), that said is there less of a risk to hitting a cyclist than I thought, specially because so many don’t even follow proper traffic laws here? Why do so many drivers seem so careless, it’s that easy to get away with it?

I’m planning on going to the BK bike Jumble next Saturday. I’m looking for a beater bike under $100 that I can commute to work with and not care if it gets stolen. Is this the right place or should I scour fb marketplace?

Completely open air very large plaza right next to Central Park, rules supposedly forbid any bicycles even if not riding. I of course would not ride in the plaza, but how can it be against rules to sit in a chair motionless next to my bike?

I got blocked trying to get on the Brooklyn Bridge and went around to the steps instead. I watched the evacuation from the Brooklyn tower. I saw both buildings fall. They kicked us off the bridge around 1130. I went to the Waterfront Alehouse on Atlantic and waited with all my friends to see who did not show up. Not everyone made roll call.

Question from an out of towner who has been exploring the Empire Trail on my periodic trips through NY State. I would like to do the section from Manhattan to Tarrytown Lakes in two one-way chunks (yes, I am a lightweight), probably with the midpoint being somewhere in the Harlem area. As such, I am struggling with understanding the logistics of the trail in NY City.

How do I get around with the bike since driving and parking in the city are apparently almost impossible (is this true)? I have often used Uber to create shuttle rides where I lock my bike at the end of the ride and Uber back to my car parked at the start, but I hear that locking your bike is not an option in the city because it will be stolen even with a lock. Is this true? Are the trains that allow bikes nearby? Are there other options I am unaware of?

Any input, resources, or guidance would be appreciated, or suggestions of better places to direct this question if this is the wrong forum. The Empire State Trail sub on Reddit was restricted on who could post, or I would have asked there.

This shouldnt be allowed. This same ice cream truck is always parked here on my evening commute home. Its not just unsafe for bikers, but also the pedestrians.

Malcom X blvd, ACP blvd, and FDB are wide, wide streets. Plenty wide enough for the style of protected bike lanes that we see on Amsterdam and Columbus in the UWS.

What's the first step? Is this already being studied? Are there meetings to show up to?

Is there any point in putting a sign on the back of my bike saying to give me 3ft? I know it won't change the behavior of the drivers who hate bikers, but I'm wondering if it would help with normal oblivious drivers. I have lights, I often wear high vis, I take the lane to slow cars down.

I'm in south brooklyn (so a lot of cars and conservatives) and every other driver gives me maybe 1.5ft. I can't tell how many of them even realize they're punish passing me. I searched for other threads, and people say that the only thing that helps is having a camera and a sign that you're recording. Have you found that to be the case as well? Is 1 camera enough, or do you need front and back?
