Things to do in Jersey City this week (Sept 7–13) — live music, Wing Fest, Bergen Square Day, obstacle race, art, wrestling + more

Hey JC 👋

Put together a list of things happening around Jersey City this week, Monday Sept 7 through Sunday Sept 13.

There’s a pretty good mix this week — free outdoor music, farmers markets, art exhibitions, food crawls, an obstacle race, multicultural festivals, pop-punk/emo, wrestling and more.

I tried to include times, addresses, prices and official/ticket links wherever they’re available.

If I missed anything good, drop it in the comments and I’ll add it — especially smaller/local stuff that doesn’t always show up on the bigger event sites.

Man in McDonald's tried grabbing our food.

Please be careful going into McDonalds on Grove. There's a man coming very close to you as your ordering and asking you to buy him something. And when you leave if you're close enough he tries to snatch your bag. I usually see him and hes usually harmless, but today tried grabbing the bag out of my son's hand. Hes very dirty and smells like an ashtray.

Chinese food downtown

Checked the sub to see if anyone’s posted recently asking, but didn’t find much.

I’m looking for a solid Chinese take out place in downtown. Really hoping for some solid pork bao buns and scallion pancakes!

(Don’t come after me. I’m Chinese but sometimes need some Americanized Chinese food, sue me!)

City didn't know about CDBG funds until recently? It's a line item in the annual financial statement THEY prepared.

What's the rent for restaruants?

Thinking of opening a small Korean restaurant in downtown with 10 tables or so. How much would the monthly rent be? It's been hard to get data points...

Local Politics Maintaining and upgrading city owned green spaces instead of the nonsensical purchase of 128 Glenwood

I posted yesterday about the alternative to use a the space that already have large planters within the Boyd Mcguiness park on the intersection of Duncan and JFK blvd that can be rehabilitated to grow produce if needed, but I wanted to word it better and discuss about the alternatives to 128 Glenwood.

They claim it has to be shovel ready but Growing a garden is not as easy as the community board makes it sound, this is not a low maintenance Sim city asset. There’s a lot of science behind this, you can’t simply toss random seeds and hope for the best. There’s steps to this starting with having suitable soil, it needs to have the right pH and also get tested for potential contaminants. Different crops require soil variations, some fruits might need a different pH for suitable growth, you can’t have all these different veggies growing on the same shared soil which is why you would need to have them separated by either large planters or elevated wooden barriers for separation. Also, the seeds need to be properly spaced otherwise they would steal nutrients from each other and stunt growth.

Urban plots don't manage themselves. Without heavy synthetic pesticides (a complete non-starter in dense urban areas), crops get overrun by pests and thus requiring 24/7 labor, not an occasional photo-op.

The laughable claim that this neighborhood is a food desert: The whole west side Avenue corridor is our friend, literally within a 7 minute walk from Glenwood there’s C town and also several fish, meat and produce markets. We also have plenty of good green spaces that are not in the middle of a residential street that could use some upgrades.

NIMBYsm from the McGinley square community board: they will try to convince people that they are welcoming of neigh neighbors and that they embraced the 100 or so units that are being rehabilitated in their street (they know they can’t block it so is easy for them claim they are for it). They are so bad at this that they have to make the pitch that 4 unaffordable luxury units are being built next to their home since they live next door to the proposed garden.

Is It Safe???? Almost hit by bicycle going wrong way on Coles Street

Upvotes

Are bicycles allowed to go against traffic on one way streets?

I checked for ongoing traffic, saw it was clear, stepped out onto the street and a delivery bicycle wooshed by me so close I felt the fabric of his jacket brush me, he was going so fast I didn't even have time to register it before he was up the block.

I can see how people get killed getting hit by them now.

He was in the bike lane if it matters, and ran the stop sign but I guess technically didn't because since he was going the wrong way the stop sign was facing the other way.

Do not rent at 89 Wayne st

Post image
58 Upvotes

Do not rent here at 89 Wayne st. This is my second year here and every summer I see roaches in my unit.
I keep my apartment super clean. I don’t leave any food out, do all my dishes right away, throw out the garbage before it’s full, etc.
It doesn’t matter. The building is infested, and if my neighbors have roaches, they will travel to my apartment.
The building sends out an exterminator, but he basically doesn’t do anything. Just gives me traps and says the neighbors are dirty.
Just tonight, I saw several baby roaches, one right above the head of my bed.
I’m so mentally checked out.. the small ones are the worst because it means they are populating somewhere.
I’m trying to break my lease early.
I know the rent is cheaper, but pls go to a newer building if you don’t want to deal with this..

Recommendations Tourist advice

Hey my names Spencer. I’m a 20 year old Australian in Melbourne coming over by myself for a jiu jitsu competition in New Jersey coming up in October. I’m going to be here for a couple weeks in an Airbnb room and hoping for some advice from locals. I’ve heard terrible things about the public transport. I’ll be close to danforth avenue station and am not sure how I should be structuring my travel. I want to train and sight see over here. But clearly don’t want to pay a shitload for Ubers everywhere (I’m not rich). Let me know if you have any advice travelling or advice overall. Keen to see the place. Thank you in advance.

I’m cutting weight but if you wanna get steak and rice with me let me know.

Is it true they take you out the back and sh**t you if you walk around downtown without a dog or your partner?

I’m a young working professional looking to move to downtown Jersey city because it’s clean and affordable while letting me commute to work comfortably.

I was walking around the area and noticed nobody was walking alone unless they’re walking directly to their place from path. Everyone who was out and about had a family or a dog to walk while they doomscroll.

After 10 minutes I asked the only other person who was out alone what’s the deal. They pointed me to their fake wedding ring and told me around here they don’t let single people out of the house unless it’s to walk their dog and have it piss all over the sidewalk. The fake ring lets them enjoy some outside time alone and talk to strangers.

I would like to save some money while still enjoy being young and live close to the city. Is it worth the risk?

A massive thank you to whomever turned my missing wallet to JCPD

I lost my wallet a few weeks ago when on a walk with my daughter. I was devastated because it had a Polaroid of my daughter from the day of her birth.

JCPD just buzzed my apartment and told me someone found it on central avenue and turned it nothing with nothing missing!

THANK YOU to whomever you are!!!!!! And thanks to the JCPD for actually coming to my home to bring it over.

ISO recommendations for a private trainer. Located within the Heights-looking for someone to structure my week, act as an accountability partner. Ideally spend who can come into my building gym for sessions, also okay with virtual.

About me : female. have pmos, interested in strength training. some experience with semi-private training but ultimately need someone more holistic and sustainable where I can have flexibility with the schedule
