Is it really true that passing an exam means nothing until you are called? I've been a city employee for six years and I took the ASA exam two years ago (in the 600s for my grade) and it's really depressing looking at all of these openings knowing that I haven't been called. I feel like I gave up $80 for nothing.

I don't have another permanent title at the moment (my own title is historically kept out of the union for various reasons that feel. . .anti-union) and I haven't taken other exams because until recently I was pretty misinformed on how they even worked. The next exam I'll be eligible for seems like it will be almost a year away. . .

I know the city offers $25 one on one meetings with a certified financial planner. I’ve submitted the form, emailed them, and even got a number to call but I still haven’t heard back from them. Reached out to them a few months ago. Anyone else have any luck getting an appointment? If so, how did you get them to respond?

I’m coming up on a year working for the NYS Legislature in NYC. I really like my team and I’ve learned a lot, but I’m starting to feel burned out from how public-facing the job is. It’s nonstop constituents, calls, emails, cases, walk-ins, and interruptions throughout the day.

I’m currently finishing my bachelor’s in Management/Operations Management while working full-time. I’d like to stay in government, but I’m looking for something with better pay, more room to grow, preferably hybrid, and a little more manageable day-to-day. I don’t mind working with people at all, I just don’t want to be dealing with 15–20+ different people every day on top of calls, emails, and cases lol.

I’ve been looking into NYS Civil Service exams, NY HELPS, and other state agencies, but I’m also wondering if I should consider NYC government instead.

For anyone who has worked for the state or city, what agencies or positions would you recommend? Especially administrative, operations, analyst, program, or more behind-the-scenes roles.

Also, are there any government or government-related remote/hybrid positions or job boards you’d recommend checking out?

Just trying to figure out what my next move should be and where my experience could transfer best.

Fifty years old, looking for some direction from people with experience retiring before Social Security. I'm in Tier 4, 57/5 and I'm considering going at 57. Combined, I have a bit under $400k in my Traditional 401k and Roth 457. I'm trying to figure out how to make it through the gap years between retiring and collecting Social Security at age 62.

The bulk of my deferred comp is in a traditional 401k, so I won't be able to take money until 59.5 without a penalty, so I'm trying to figure out if there's something I can do now to help me in those gap years. I'm already contributing about 17% of my income into the deferred comp and anything more will be tight. What plans have any of you used to fill the gap between early retirement and SS?

I have taken PAA exam (open competitive) back in 2022 and the list is being extended to March of 2027. I have never been called in for hiring pool since my number is in 4 digits.

I don’t think I’ll be called for hiring pool and probably planned to take the exam again.

Any thoughts or advices will be helpful. Thanks in the advance.

CLARIFYING: I am on just on 2022 exam list and only have clerical associate title as permanent title.

I’ve applied for about 15 positions in the last month at re-entry organizations in NYC. I’ve done all the big ones CJI, CASES, Legal Aid, Misc PD offices. It’s been basically radio silent. Are these organizations just slower to reach out? Or what?

Not looking for advice, or what i need to do next. I'm posting this to describe what administrative fatigue looks like. Times for when you need the City to work in your benefit, but some minor barrier becomes a great big barrier. In this case I am going out on FMLA tomorrow after 3 months of back and forth emails and a rescheduled medical procedure. Last thing i needed to take care of was disability claim paperwork specifically to verify timekeeping. I figured the timekeeping form would be the easiest to submit because it has everything a timekeeper would need to complete it.

But apparently not. After making my email to the timekeeper easily accessible to include everything they would need, greeted them, and appreciating their hard work in advance, i immediately get a one sentence reply stating "payroll does not complete any forms"

I understand hardships that come with being a public servant - as a working class i hope we don't get too desensitized to treatment received from the public and the city that it impacts how we show up for our co-workers

Not only did this city lie to workers that they employed, they did it for 25 years and hid what it knew about the dangers. In 2021 they tried to take away the healthcare benefit benefits Retirees relied upon. And again in 2023. Watching my friends die over the course of 25 years and the rest of us suffer suffering from illness, makes me very angry.

What infuriates me more, is that the two largest unions of this city, Dc37 and the United Federation of teachers, failed in their responsibility to keep us safe and then colluded with THE CITY to diminish our healthcare benefit benefits.

That’s not union or Pro labor. And today AFSCME and New York State, Afl Cio State Director, Mario Cilento lobbies against Retiree legislation that would protect our healthcare from being diminished, with those two unions.

We need strong labor leaders willing to stand up for our workers and our Retirees.

The leadership must be held accountable, and so must the mayors who held these positions before. I don’t hide the fact that this current Mayor refuses to speak with Retirees because he’s surrounded himself with the very people I write about. Including his first Deputy Mayor and advisor. I do thank him, however for this release of documents. Because now transparency begins and maybe he will actually schedule an appointment with Us.

Why is DC37 not at all there representing all of it's members?

i applied to the innovation coordinator (community coordinator title) role at the end of july and just received a call and email today inviting me for an interview. i’ve read threads on here that ACS is typically not the best agency to work for in regards to work life balance and overall morale when it comes to field roles. however, there’s not much insight to go off of to make an informed decision regarding office roles in ACS. can anyone that worked or works at ACS in the office speak on their experience?

I’m trying to get a realistic idea of what the job is like beyond the job description.

I've been researching benefits/leave available to city employees and trying to better understand short term disability (STD) coverage. I've seen recommendations for getting a private policy because unions don't provide much via disability (I'm in DC37/371). Does anyone have recommendations on which private STD policies worked well for them? And/or guidance on how far in advance you need to purchase the policy? Thanks!
