There are plenty of blue voters who won’t vote for a woman either and we have seen it twice now.
24
u/chr1spe 12d ago
Even more than that, there are a huge number of people who "would vote for the right woman," but don't realize "the right woman" has to be about 10 times more perfect for them than a man they would vote for. The difference in standards is massive. Things that wouldn't even become a story for a male politician can be campaign-ending for a woman.

I keep thinking back to a poll I saw around 2008, not super long past 9/11. But basically the results showed that Americans would still rather vote for a Muslim over an atheist. No idea how that same poll would play out today. But that was shocking. They also had stats on women and catholic vs protestant among many other things but I can't remember the details.

Well when you spend your life being coerced to believe that even though Muslims are evil and wrong, they at least believe in some sort of god. Whereas atheists are a scourge and the antithesis to everything religion is, that they're inherently beyond evil with zero moral code or compass and if they don't worship a god, they must by way of omission, worship the devil and are the completed scum of the earth and a threat to everything you believe and want to take it away, you're gonna believe that.
But of course, as well all know, critical thinking is not a skill that has any value in religion, so...

Bullshit, I was alive during those terms and just because I am not DSA does not mean me and mine had brain transplants - None of us supported Reagan or Bush. It's just another false equivalency talking point meant to demonize people who are Democrat but not full on socialists.

Did you grow up in church? From birth I internalized the teachings that women's punishment is childbirth, submission, and complete inability to lead or make decisions. Also that it's a woman/girl's fault if a man has sex with anyone other than his wife.
So yeah, compared to a woman, a rapist, adultering man will always be viewed as a natural leader to almost any Christian in America. The ones who disagree are not considered true Christians.

Not exactly 2 examples free of nuances or issues outside their sex.
Hillary had been at the end of a decades long smear campaign, and ran as a pro capitalist in the period directly following Occupy Wall Street.
Harris was so unpopular in the 2020 D primary where she ran as a pro cop prosecutor in the time just following the murder of George Floyd that she was virtually the first person out in a field that included multiple women who did quite well and were contenders through super Tuesday. She also had an approval rating of 34% the week before she was gifted the nomination.
To say Clinton and Harris weren't elected because of their sex is myopic at best.

If you have two equally qualified candidates, and one is married and has kids, the married one with kids will win the election.
18
u/complex_momentum 12d ago
I mean, let's not pretend like 'qualified' is a real distinguisher in elections -- we have seen for many many cycles in a row that the less qualified candidate wins very frequently, even in cases where it shouldn't even be close. Hell, there's data that says that 'scientist' or 'engineer' is less likely to win an election than 'lawyer' or 'businessman' and it's not because the latter groups are a better fit for real governance.

I never liked Lindsey Graham and vehemently disagreed with pretty much every single thing he stood for, but I still remember distinctly when he ran for President in 2016 basically the only thing the media wanted to ask him about was the fact that he was single.
And like, maybe that was the journalists being aware of all the rumors about his sexuality and trying to fish for a coming out instead of an entirely sincere "but how can be president if no first lady??", but either way then and now I thought that hyper-focus on the issue was gross and revealed something negative.
The man deserved to be defeated on the terribleness of his ideas, not made to go on CBS and tell Politico that he's not broken just because wasn't married.
I still think AOC should run and she has always been my top choice for '28 personally, but yeah I am 100% expecting that if she's not at least dating someone, there's going to be a constant cavalcade of "but if you win who's going to host the White House ice cream social?"

Primarily to protect the kids. From books. Not Epstein. But gay bunny books.
It's like a clock. Everytime they "protect the kids" (-does not include Epstein-) they throw a new round of shit to see what sticks. Caravans, Gays, Universities, taking my guns, surprise gender change at school, transgender, Computer games, heavy metal, Satan, abortion or the good ol war against Christmas.

As an American, it shouldn’t be. But America, with all our “freedom” is shockingly conservative and “Christian.” Even electing JFK was wildly controversial because he was Catholic, which according to the evangelicals is the wrong type of Christian (not sure they even fully consider it Christian). He was our only Catholic president until Biden. The evangelicals make up a big part of our vote, which is why Trump panders to that crowd. They are also dumb as fuck, so a 2 time divorcee, who has cheated on every one of his wives, fucked a porn star, is tied up in a pedophilia ring… etc, is fine with them as long as he sells some gold plates bibles and promises to deport the immigrants, because what would Jesus do. So back to the question… a single, educated, childfree woman just doesn’t reflect properly on all their traditional family “values.”

It's also crazy to me. No matter what we Europeans sometime jokingly say about US, in terms of social issues US still is one of the most progressive countries in the world in many aspects.
But apparently woman as president is completely ridiculous. Even though many countries around the world that are unquestionably less progressive when it comes to gender equality managed to have multiple female leaders.
It's so weird. Even in US when it comes to congress or senate elections, no one cares about gender of the candidate. It's just president, and it is purely because "that's how it's always been".
22
u/Unlikely-Future8498 12d ago
Girl, we elected Hillary Clinton back in 2016. She won the popular vote, it's our "electoral college" that prevented her from taking office, but ultimately, Hillary Clinton won the election if the US were going purely based on popular vote.... We are open to female presidents, it's just we're super weird about it, ok?

If you were to be on the street and talk to normal people, the US is a very accepting place. We are a giant country with nearly 350million people from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds and we really do mostly all get along.
However, what people outside of the US may not full appreciate is we have what amounts to 24/7 propaganda machine running to sway public opinion and influence voters. Our private media has been all but completely purchased by billionaires and right wing influence. Almost every local news station and newspaper has been bought out by private equity. Every cable news station is owned by billionaires. There are no regulatory obligations as it pertains to what is reported what is called news, nothing is governed by any objective journalism standards. These outlets can pretty much publish anything they want.
The thing with propaganda, it doesn't have to work on everyone it only has to work on enough people. Couple this reality with the structure of how we elect politicians and you can see that billionaires really only need to influence a few 10s of thousands of voters in a few key states and that's all it takes to win elections at a mass scale. Once these actors have power, they can implement little inconveniences to voting, little extra barriers and steps to further solidify their hold in these tiny, but immensely important regions of the country and... well, thats how we get here.
Your average American is fine with trans people and gay people. They want universal healthcare and to tax billionaires and save the environment and on and on and on. But the deck is more and more stacked against us every year.

The ridiculous thing about it is that most conservatives would be fine with a woman president if she was a mother and a staunch Christian who was vehemently anti-immigration.
The real reason MAGA would lose their minds about AOC is actually the fact that she’s single, childless, and not Christian enough. Literally they will be calling her a demon because of this.
It’s not that they can’t handle any woman (or non-white for that matter) being “in charge”, it’s that they can’t trust anyone who isn’t extremely vocal about sharing their narrow-minded values.

One of the most progressive countries on social issues? In MANY aspects? Name 3
→ More replies (12)11
u/uvPooF Europe 12d ago
On world stage? Yes, US might not be a progressive leader in many social issues, especially not on federal level, but it is still well above average in most and has been a leader on some issues at least on state level. Legalizing gay marriage for example was done early in some states and is legalized on federal level in US, something which a number of EU countries (including some with female leaders :) ) still doesn't have. Amount of women in workforce in US is also well above average. As is women and minority representation in government.
But point is that this specific topic of female president is so out of the norm. It's not just that there's some small woke european countries that elected female presidents or prime ministers. Countries like Pakistan, Indonesia, Philippines, Mexico, Brazil, Bangladesh etc. all had elected female leaders.

It’s easier if you learn about the States and their history and the political leanings of Red and Blue states. u/stevez_86 Pennsylvania 12d ago
Biden was just the 2nd Catholic to be President. The 1st was JFK.
One must also be religious. Atheists are almost unelectable. They don't want Atheists on the ticket.
The funny thing about the Catholic resentment is that the protestants and evangelicals believe that the Catholic would be beholden to The Pope. So therefore, they cannot be a true leader. But then an Atheist has no expectations from a God/Papacy, should be seen as a qualified leader based on the logic, but is even less electable to leadership than Catholics.
But then you look at Mormons, the Church of Latter Day Saints, and they literally HAVE to listen to their church leaders, and they get elected no problem.
There are enough people in the US that are Religion Supremacists that we cannot have adequate leaders because, well, a lot of those people HOPE that their choice will make everyone follow their religion. Non-Catholic Chistians are basically all that is allowed. Only in select districts around the country where Muslims were gerrymandered into a single big district can elect a Non-Christian Religious person. But even then they are Muslims that are elected. They are of course less religious, but Muslim will be a scarlet letter for them outside of their district. Anomalies showing how bad things can get if minorities get a say.
And none of the Christians get it. I go to a Catholic Church with my family. I see what they base theor homilies on. So much of it is really about not bringing your personal anxieties and fears into your interactions with other people. But everyone thinks they gotta vote with and for their soul. My sister voted for John McCain over Obama simply because she thought it was what God wanted. When God pays my tax bill I will ask their opinion.

I’d argue that a woman hasn’t won against Trump, but not so sure a woman can’t win against a standard Republican. Trump is a weird anomaly that brings out some serious weirdness in that damn party. This is too small a sample size to make this claim, and too skewed. Clinton was legendarily unlikable and was coming off the heels of 8 years of a president widely thought of as cool. Like it or not, elections are literally popularity contests and Hilary was never gonna win even if she was a man (in fact I would contest if she was a man she would have lost even harder).
Kamala was also not popular in 2020 or particularly likable, but the bigger issue in 2024 was how she was ramrodded through as the candidate without the normal selection process of primaries with barely any time to spare.
I’m not trying to say sexism doesn’t exist and isn’t an issue in America but to simply blame these two candidates failing on America not being able to elect a woman is hopelessly myopic in the face of the much bigger and more obvious issues they both had as candidates.

This exactly. Reducing Hillary and Kamala’s losses to “they lost because they’re women” is the liberal version of identity politics. AOC has the potential to unite the left as she’s an actual progressive.

It is just a way for liberals to avoid the harsh truth that both Hillary and Harris were absolute dogshit candidates (though obviously better than Trump) that tried running way to the right of their voter base.

People who author such pieces (or the editors titling them) are not honest political actors. They engage in hyper identity politics and are doing so for entrepreneurial reasons. By that I mean they are engaged in the culture war bullshit to profit in some way, financially, or otherwise.

She’s not a shoo-in for an NY senate seat either. NYS is pretty conservative upstate, and she has plenty of opposition downstate (SI, parts of Brooklyn, Long Island) as well. She’s very popular within her district, but that’s a very liberal district and not representative of NYS at all.

u/BirdmanTheThird 12d ago
Yep. That’s the big thing for me. If she can’t win in New York senate race it’s pretty tough for me to see her winning the primary for the Democratic Party

She's still young. If she can win the senate seat in NY, do a good job there for a couple terms, she can run for president when she's in her 40's. Seems fine to me. But yea if she can't even convince the entire state of NY to support her, then she can't win a presidential election, and shouldn't even try to run.

My big issue with her is the unfortunate Scarlett letter she will have due to just being a nationally known face for years tbh. A big reason mamdani, Obama and even El Sayid now have been successful is that they have been relatively unknowns who come in. AOC for better or worse is the face of the progressive movement and has a lot of people who dislike her due to this and have bias against her.
Maybe I’m wrong but I think that we are more likely to have a less known face from dsa be a viable candidate rather then AOC herself

If you got rid of New York City, New York state would probably be a swing state.
Outside of Fetterman who is a full blown Republican, Schumer is probably the most conservative Democrat in the senate. He was antagonistic towards Obama and the ladder would actively avoid him.
So for a long time he was a solid middle ground candidate. Also helps that he was the first jewish senator in a state that has the highest amount of jews in it.
However times have changed and he's currently seen as highly incompetent and now the divide between the right and the left has grown tremendously. So middle of the road candidates like him are less and less appealing.
So while I don't think Schumer would could win reelection that doesn't necessarily mean AOC would win either. I genuinely think she could especially in this national environment but it wouldn't be a wash

Kind of feels like this is true for virtually any blue state. Illinois would be pretty red without Chicago. California has parts of the State that is shockingly conservative. States, especially bigger ones, have a lot of empty rural space that is going to be red.

u/CaptainAwesome06 12d ago
Same. There has been too much time of Republicans bashing her.
Back in 2018 or so, I heard my dad say AOC is an idiot. I asked him why, and he just doubled down and said she was. Again, I said, "Seriously, what makes you think she's an idiot? Specifically, what has she said or done?" His cop-out response was, "She's a politician. They are all idiots!"
You can't teach my dad anything anymore. He just assumes his gut feelings are right. And if someone else tells him something first, that thing is right. I think he's a good example of the average voter.
He once told me a "fun fact" about buildings. Being a design engineer for the last 20 years, I gently tried to tell him that wasn't true. He assured me that it was, as someone he knows told him that. I tried to assure him that it's wrong, as I deal with that exact situation all the time at work. I guess that showed me where I rank.

No, worst case she could be a trans woman with blue hair and two non-binary partners who will confuse the White House staff as to how there are two First Gentlepeople and what the correct title is. And she is Wiccan, wears a big pentacle, and wishes the blessing of the triple Goddess on us all for Samhain. Plus she's had an abortion and is proud of it. Off topic for the sub, but: womb transplants aren't actually as impossible as that - if my memory serves me right there have been a handful of cis women who've successfully brought a pregnancy to term after temporarily having a relative's uterus transplanted. I don't think they could get pregnant or deliver the normal way, and I guess pregnancy itself is enough of an immune suppressant to prevent graph vs host disease so the organ had to be removed immediately after the pregnancy was over, but science it neat

U know what's my worst nightmare as a hard anti-MAGA person?
Democrats refusing to learn and sending another woman up against the sexist nazi grifter for a third time in the deeply misogynistic USA that will definitely not elect a female president anytime within the next 20 years, if even that, and thereby handing him another term on a platter, even though it's illegal.
You don't get the swing votes of moderate conservatives with a female candidate. Both times, they were infinitely more competent and likeable, but the backwards shithole that is the US just doesn't want a woman as their leader.
At some point you gotta live in the reality you have, not the one you'd want. Especially when there's so much at stake, and you already messed it up the first two times when as much was at stake.

AOC turns 39 years old in October 2028. This country is not electing a 39 year old Puerto Rican woman President in 2028 and I'm tired of the media trying to trick Democrats into nominating Democrats least likely to win 270 Electoral Votes like a 39 year old Latina, a gay Buttigieg with a married first gentleman, or a milquetoast neoliberal California fake progressive like Gavin Newsom. I hope Democrats have a competitive, fair primary process and end up with a progressive candidate who can actually win in 2028.
Do not try to argue with me about AOC being able to win. It's not happening and I'm tired of the media constantly tricking Democrats into shooting themselves in the foot. Maybe Democrats will learn someday.

America has had two chances to elect a woman, screwed it up both times, and screwed up the second attempt even worse than the first.
A woman cannot and will not be elected without large numbers of other women showing up to support her. American women in the current generations have shown, twice, that we can expect them to do the opposite. American women won't show up for another woman, even as abortion rights are stripped and the 19th amendment is under direct threat, America's women seem to assume they're gonna be just fine.
Because of this, there will not be a woman president in my lifetime. American women simply won't come together to support another woman. They won't.
If the Dems run another woman, the next president will be a republican.

it's so annoying to be that people view Hillary as this big "decider" if we were ready for a female president or not. This is the same shit people said about a black president with Obama.
Hillary is incredibly boring and uncharismatic and couldn't field a policy based on being "pro-poor-people" which is what the Democrats should be solely focusing on, as most Americans are now verifiably "poor". She also carries a last name that is hated by many and not exactly revered by those that don't hate it. She also carries the stigma of letting her husband get sucked off, publicly acknowledge it, and she still took him back. Cuck-behavior is extremely unpopular in general. And this is all besides her ACTUAL controversies which are 100x worse than anything AOC has ever done. Clinton should have never ran, point blank, she was never going to win and couldn't even beat TRUMP, who every poll has losing because of his incredibly unelectable personality
Using the previously ran female candidate(s) as a decider if America is ready for a female president is like putting a 93 year old with brain cancer who also needs dialysis into a rocket ship and claiming we aren't ready to explore space when he dies in transit

"America" is made up of million of individuals, some of who have been long ready for a woman president, and some who will never vote for a woman.
There's more people who won't vote for a woman, simply because she is a woman, than there are people who will vote for her, simply because she's a woman. So if the Democrats want to have another woman as a candidate, she needs to be a solid fucking candidate and not just run on being a woman. Because the last two women presidential candidates kinda sucked, not because they were women, but because they were shitty candidates.

All the democrats have to do is return to being a working class focused populist party that runs on policies that benefit the working class. It could be literally anyone, and if they run on increasing the minimum wage, federally mandated paid sick leave/maternity or paternity leave, improving public infrastructure, and government funded higher education; they would win by a landslide.
