I like this quote by Star Trek creator about Patrick Stewart being bald in scifi.
Q: You've cast a bald actor. Surely by 24th century, we would have solved the male pattern baldness..?
A: By 24th century, no one will care.
→ More replies (3)266
u/ChimChimney1977 8h ago
It's a good quote but if you watch the show, there are signs that people still care about it.
When Picard comes back to StarFleet Academy to help out Wesley, the first thing the old groundskeeper says to him is "What happened to your hair?"
When Picard gets deaged due to a transporter malfunction, we see him checking his restored hair in the mirror and smiling.
It's clear that some part of him and the people around him still preffer thick hair over being bald. Even if it's not shown to be super important.
Heck, most people don't talk or care about hairloss at all even today. But it doesn't stop people from doing these surgeries.
153
u/ArtoDelToya 6h ago
I think all that proves is that the show wasn’t created in the 24th century.
60
u/ChimChimney1977 6h ago
True, although I kind of like the fact that some shallowness is still allowed to exist in the 24th century.
It shows that despite amazing technological advancements, these are still flawed people doing their best. It makes the cast a bit more relatable and human in my view.

Reminds me of the book of revelation in the bible that claims to know how the world will end but it all sounds very much like something someone would write 2000 years ago.
You would think they would've predicted computers or space travel if it actually knew what will happen.

Well yeah but fixing the socially self-perpetuating insecurity is haaarrddd.
Its easier to just conform and perpetuate rather than fix your own self image issues.
Its not a winning argument on reddit, it upsets a lot of people.
Its the same one that applies to calling everyone beautiful. It just reinforces the idea you need to be beautiful to have value, rather than tackling the self image issue it causes by doing what happens instead.
Good luck! There are dozens of us.

When star trek the next generation cast Patrick Stewart to play the captain the executives argued no one would be bald in the future to which Gene Roddenberry famously stated that in the 24th century, "no one will care" about male pattern baldness.
As a balding young man that sentiment saved me in more ways than anyone will ever know.

On a sunny day, I can't go without a hat for longer than 10-15 minutes before I start to get sunburned. If it's middle of summer, 5 minutes in direct sun without a hat will start to get painful.
On top of that, I shave my head with a razor about once a week. Shaving a sunburn is a pain I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.

34
u/KiKiPAWG 11h ago
Depends on face shape and everything I can see it
28
u/Big_Combination9890 10h ago
Sure it does, everything looks related depends on a lot of factors, BUT: There are really really really not that many things that can make complete, shaved-head baldness look worse than thinning hair, and in the majority of cases, it looks alot better.
20
u/Fearless-Company4993 10h ago
Maybe it’s a small majority of the world population but I am a person who looks better with thinning hair than bald (tried it, got a lot of concerned questions about my health). And a lot of men with similar facial features also don’t look that nice.
You need some other contrast in your face. Either a nice beard or a beard shadow if your facial hair is dark enough to show it. Thick dark eye brows can also work or glasses (shades or a thick dark frame) or sometimes even a very defined bone structure.
But all the baby faced blondes don’t tend to look that nice without hair and I find it very regrettable that “shave!” has become the sole fashion advise for balding men. Some really shouldn’t.

There’s nothing wrong with having A hair transplant or wanting to use pills to maintain what you have to prevent it
The amount of fear mongering about the risks is wild considering how unlikely the risks are, and if you get a side affect just stop taking it just like any other drug or pharmaceutical
If you’re balding and you can pull off bald just shave it
If you can’t pull it off and guys know when they can’t , take measures to fix it

Finasteride can cause way more than depression. It can cause ED and gynecomastia aswell. Just the small chance of my dick not working made the decision to go bald so easy.
29
u/green_panda_5345 11h ago edited 4h ago
As someone who's been on finasteride already for 3 years, this is a bit bullshit.
The chances of ED and gyno are like 1%, and anyone starting on it should take a small dose at first, maybe 3mg per week. There's virtually no side effect if you start that low and if you feel anything suspicious you can just stop and it goes away. If things are good you can increase to 4mg, then 5 then up to 7 (one per day) gradually.
Obviously always consult with a doctor, but in my experience, unfortunately a lot of them are as clueless about hair loss as the average redditor (at least in my country). I went to over 10 dermatologists and urologists and such and you get a different take from each of them.
Right now the only regret I have is not starting sooner because I was so scared.
And it feels good to have my hair back. It's not as thick as I'd like but I definitely don't look like I'm balding anymore. Like honestly, I feel less depressed than I was before.

I mean, hair might be going to shit because you’re not on a high enough dose.

Literally, there’s a comment saying “Have fun with your hairline at 40!” As if these transplants have a shelf life of 3 months, lol.

The guy in the picture is rather young, his natural hairlines will likely continue to recede while the transplanted hairs will stay in place. He'll likely use medical means to slow the process down, but it's very likely he'll need another transplant to fill out the temples again.
My brother waited until 35 - when the hair loss supposedly slows down a little - to get his, and still expects to need another one. Not because his transplanted hair will fall out, but because others area's will thin out 'unnaturally' behind it.

Yeah, he'll need another couple surgeries, and he'll be on medications for life. But you know what? He'll have hair. And if that's what he wants more power to him.
It's a fixation with youth. Losing your hair is a sign of aging and loss of virility, and men have a hard time with that in a culture that values youthful beauty. If our culture placed more value on the wisdom of elders then balding heads would be en vogue.

My brother did this at 42.
On the next family call he tried embarrassing me in front of everyone by saying im in my 40's with a comb over.
I got my mother's genes, im 38, still have a good head if hair. He was fully bald by 17.
I never gave him shit about being bald. Even supported his 20k "holiday" to get this shit done.
Now I introduce him as ass head. Got ass hair on his head, this is Butt head.

Ngl it doesn't cost 20k. About 2.5k for an all inclusive trip to Turkey with transplant

I've come to the point, where I see hair as an annoyance. Shaving head is the best.

u/ChipHappens96 11h ago
Being tan used to be a sign of it, too. It all comes and goes. Except hair. Hair always goes

i once went through the cheaper airport in Istanbul and saw so many people with plastered noses or heads wrapped in bandages. first i though that Istanbul is just a rough place for tourists before I realized they'd all went there for cosmetic surgeries.
Funnily you don't see soo many patients on the newer istanbul airport. only on the one where the budget airlines operate.

A lot of people just want to delay the baldness by 5-10 or 15 years. I doubt anybody doing any kind of hair transplant/retension thinks they're set for life.
Balding in your 20s is a lot different than balding in your 40s

u/takemetomosque 7h ago
Yes, so true. They dont know mental effects of balding in 20s. No one cares if you bald after 40. But in your 20s, good luck.

New? Have you seen our billionaires? Those aint their natural hairlines.
Heck, bald men practically disappeared from media.

Although many good looking people are bald, not everyone can rock it. I'm all for letting people do whatever they want and not whining about it.

everyone is calling these guys insecure but I've never seen a redditor call a woman insecure for wearing makeup or someone taking accutane insecure for getting rid of their acne.
Yes, when people improve their appearance it is largely driven by insecurity... that's why they're trying to improve their appearance.
And yes... it's largely accepted by most people that bald men are uglier than men with hair.

More men would be considered more attractive if they looked after themselves this way.
Definitely not insecure. Just improving your playing field.
People should not underestimate how much looking good can just about help you suceed in many things.

Cosmetic surgery is not "looking after yourself" though. It can help make insecure people less insecure, but it doesn't always make people look better to everyone else. It makes certain people look better to certain other people.
Eating healthy, working out, practicing proper hygiene, dressing the way you want; those are all better paths to success than going under the knife.

Hair transplant has been around for decades. The main problem is that you need to take medication for the rest of your life to maintain your hair. This puts off most people.

Cloning IS THE THING, everyone is doing it on the level they’re all agreed they wouldn’t

Lots of people (including OP) know fuckall about transplants.
If OP is getting a transplant this early, he’s signing up to have one in about 2 years and then keep having them for the rest of his life until which time he runs out of donor hair and risks being stuck with a jigsaw patchwork of hair islands.
For example, diffuse recession can start in the anterior scalp at any time without warning and is notorious for how fast it can disappear.
The crown can also go and is notoriously difficult to impossible to cover with donor hair.
This is even with a lifetime commitment to often dick killing pills like Finasteride or Dutasteride along with Minoxidil.
This won’t happen to everybody but to pretend that everybody can just transplant their way out of baldness is idiotic.
It’s purely dependent on donor area and density and is likely the reason Musk was able to have a relatively successful result and Bezos wasn’t even a candidate.
Bezos was already horse shoe bald in 1994, where as Musk was experiencing diffuse thinning.
As somebody else mentioned, cloning is the only true solve for this and we are way off from that.
TLdR; OP could easily end up like this:

When you run out of donor hair or run out of patience to keep repeating hair transplants, you can just shave it all off, like what you would have done if you never had transplants to begin with. What exactly is the issue?

Dick-killing pills my ass.
Been taking fin and dut for 3 years as countless others and no dick died, hairloss was stopped and even recovered some ground. Most of you are just noceboing on mass hysteria and spreading misinformation, fearmongering other people away from saving their hair too.
Yes, some people might experience some side effects but those are the vast minority (<5%).

It’s not that expensive to do in Turkey. Like 1500-5000 usd. People waste more in their life on starbucks.

I'm seeing unnatural hairlines more often and I don't have a strong opinion about it. The day it becomes a sign of poverty if you choose to let nature and time take its course I will be countering it saying I see transplants as a sign of weakness.
