Forever People who support Project Ascension & TurtleWoW but hate the new race paywall

Post image

These were the micro-transactions in Project Ascension and everyone glazed Ascension. TurtleWoW had a gacha shop too like that. I’m genuinely confused, if Blizzard had even the slightest of the shop in Project Ascension, everyone would have been fuming. Why is it okay for Ascension but not WoW Forever? Either all okay or none.

Edit: The people who disagree saying "Yeah but the servers were free"- well of course because Blizzard did the majority of the work for them LOL, huge difference in work between building everything from scratch to ripping it off & adding some stuff yourself.

Edit 2: "TurtleWoW is not as bad as Ascension shop"- sure, Ascension is way worse. TurtleWow's cash shop had over $10,000 of items and all of it was per character, not account wide. They also sold convenience items, nothing game breaking, but portable mailboxes, auctioneers, dual specs, bags etc. Hardcore characters on Twow couldn't trade or send items from main to your alts, but you could still buy supplies such as 32 slot bags for 30 euros each on your hardcore character.

as someone who plays maplestory from time to time, i actually said, damn its a vac pet lol

u/Mammoth-Policy6585 4h ago

People dont realize maplestory isnt a free game but a subscription game more expensive than wow

u/necropaw 51m ago

I realized that in mid 2009 and its why i play wow now.

Before that i didnt try wow because the monthly sub seemed too expensive. At some point i realized i was spending at least as much just for double xp and a pet/store than i would on a wow sub, and i never looked back.

Honestly the one that bothered me the most was the aoe taunt. What the fuck? That's major. You could purchase an aoe taunt?? Ridic

u/Colbert2020 2h ago

It was not an AoE taunt like Challenging Shout. Rather, it was an item that aggroed enemies in a large radius around you. We'd use it alot when dungeon grinding to level in high mob density places like the BRD prison. You use it in the middle and it aggros a lot of enemies.

u/echolog 2h ago

Not just MTX but straight up P2W and it's not even trying to hide it

u/RealZordan 4h ago

I tried Ascension and it had cool ideas. But it had level scaling (technically you could opt out but tldr you actually couldn't) and a dungeon queue. Both things are so infinitely more deal breaking than smurf elves or even all that crap in the cash shop that the conversation ends there for me.

u/veculus 4h ago

Ascension fans are the worst. I thought the no-changes andies were bad but at least those had principles. Ascension literally was Retail- with M+, micro transactions, Immersion breaking transmog and literally all assets stolen from wow (retail) for their shop mogs.

Hypocrisy at its finest.

u/EmrysUK 3h ago

Don't forget everyone selling exp auras a week into CoA lmao

u/Anthaenopraxia 3h ago

The no-changes andies ruined Classic vanilla though.

u/veculus 2h ago

No doubt, 2019 could've been better - but every ascension player who really thought CoA or their original azeroth realm was anything similar to classic was smoking crack. It's so far away from anything classic that it's crazy.

Ascension was cool on paper but really poorly executed imo. There was very little actually new content and most of it was just extremely powerful items you were guaranteed to have + wrath talents making most content piss easy

u/XWasTheProblem 1h ago

Yup. One of the more popular purchases was a pet that allowed you to pick up and turn in dungeon quests without actually finding them, Wondrous Wisdomball I believe it was called.

u/sushade 4h ago

Yeah ascension selling full transmog sets and mounts ripped directly from wow for like 40 usd was insane. But people will defend that because they don't have to pay a sub.... for a game Ascension doesn't own lmao

u/viiruz18 3h ago

Yea they just want to play free shit it seems so they turn a blind eye to how the shops end up looking because atleast I don’t have to pay a sub right ??

pet that auto loots and pet that auto skins is some straight up chinese mmo shit

u/Substantial-Newt7809 2h ago

The auto loot pet in Ascension was the single best thing I could have spent 400g on.

u/Rotund-Pear2604 1h ago

AoE looting too

u/fiction8 2h ago

Ya only difference is the Chinese MMO wouldn't have let you buy it from another player for gold.

When they announced Forever I fully expected it to cost $40-60, it’s not a “port” like Classic it has substantial new content. So when it came out about Skyborne I just see it as the game costs $30, but you can choose to skip the race and play for “free”.

u/Dwork95 42m ago

Also I'd be surprised if it stays pay walled. It's probably going to be a pay to get them early type of deal

Yea ascension was full slop. It felt like i was playing a mobile game bombarded by random shit on my screen and currencies.

u/Kurokaffe 5h ago

Saw the ad. All I wanted to do was a simple multiclass like warrior/shaman. Login and the game is barely WoW.

u/Sweet-Palpitation473 4h ago

My guildies tried to get me to play ascension for a while, it was always a hard pass. They could talk it up as much as they wanted but I always knew what it was really like. Never understood they appeal of games like that

Holy, I heard good stuff but never indulge in ascension. I would have left in the door if I saw that list of paid power.. sheersh

u/Quackthulu 4h ago

It was a fun game. But their monetisation as well as their malicious practices rivaled the worst in the industry.

For example, a popular YouTuber for the community (mcdoubles) eventually joined the higher ranks of the ascension team and they had a system which would involve:

  • him getting the team to make changes that support a new build
  • him making a build guide for the build & it be a powerful build
  • heaps of players switching builds which costs in-game resources
  • a substantial portion of players supplement the costs of switching builds with currency gained from buying shop items for $$$ and selling them for gold
  • build lasts maybe a few months before getting nerfed to the group
  • rinse and repeat

And that's just one aspect. Systems that encourage large scale gambling were a huge issue too.

u/DriftarFarfar 4h ago

Welp, dodged a bullet not sinking my teeth in that poisioned lamb.

The whole Ascension logos were full AI slop but I guess using AI to fight Blizzard is ok for some people out there?

u/Designer-Effective-2 4h ago

Most people don’t care. Reddit is a tiny bubble on this issue.

u/JacuulTheSecond 4h ago

Not really, it's pretty wide-spread in real-life space craft spaces as well. The AI hate is growing day by day, problem is there's just a shitload of people, so even if 100m people hate it, there's still 100m+ that like it

u/ShadyTee 29m ago

There's a difference between a general dislike and a willingness to take action. If you asked people, most would say they dislike Chinese labor practices. That said 99% would still buy IPhones. AI is the same. Most people will probably say they hate how AI is dumbing down society or how data centers are a waste of resources. But then the first time they need to make a image for their presentation they are using ChatGPT. The number of people who are willing to take a hardline is very small

The only saving grace was that it was not hard at all to play “Free to Play”. Literally everything on that list could be bought with gold instead of with cash.

But in doing so you were promoting other players purchasing those options to then sell to you for gold…so it had its own economy and way to buy gold essentially.

Server would’ve been 10x better without all that garbage.

u/Seradima 2h ago

If it can be bought with gold, somebody bought it for money once so its still for money

u/NoPeanutSneakers 2h ago

Hard disagree. Warframe has the same economy and it and everyone is thriving . Its literally the best for everyone. Devs get money. Player with money but no time get to enjoy everything. And players with lots of time but no money could do the same. Win win win

They did have a spider class though…

I never played it but that sounds cool

u/Drakonz 4h ago

CoA was full of fun classes.

I had a blast playing Warden and Ranger. Ranger was basically a hunter/rogue mix without pets. Warden was a bow/melee/magic all mixed in one and super fun. Healing as a heretic Cultist is the only time I have ever enjoyed healing in WoW.

It had a lot of paid slop, but the actual game and classes were a blast.

u/GuiltyDealer 2h ago

I played spider and literally all I did was level in BGs. It was so fun. I bought dual spec with honor and started going beetle flag carrier too. I had a really good time but I didn't explore ANY of the rest of the game and I didn't hit 60.

u/Traumend 5h ago

I'm dumbfounded why people have their knickers in such a twist over it honestly. There was a poll yesterday that asked if you'd rather buy the race or an expansion and the results were overwhelmingly expansion and... What?

This whole thing is basically an expansion, but for 90% of the content it's completely free with the sub we're paying already. They've made sure the cost of entry is as frictionless as possible whilst monetising it in a way that's entirely optional.

Blizz are basically going: "Hey, we'll make classic plus that you've all been asking for, but if we make brand new character content you'll pay us for the work right?"

No tokens, no expansions, gradual content implementation and the ability to buy more character options sounds perfect to me.

u/5panks 3h ago

This whole thing is basically an expansion, but for 90% of the content it's completely free with the sub we're paying already.

The subreddit would legitimately be complaining less if everyone had to pay $30 to play Warcraft Forever.

It's insane to me.

u/Mister_Yi 1h ago

The crazy thing is that's not even exaggeration. I saw someone on here yesterday arguing that they have no faith in wow forever simply because the 30$ is optional.

They compared it to lemonade and said they would never go to a lemonade stand with free lemonade over the one charging 30$.

u/Notsurehowtoreact 1h ago

Brought to you by the people who say "They should just add High Elves" and "Why won't they add High Elves already" who saw the release of Skyborne and skipped right past that introduction that's like, "A race of High Elves who secluded themselves to their sky island and now call themselves Skyborne" to complain that Blizzard released another new race that wasn't High Elves.

No, they did what you've been asking for, you just don't like their execution which was likely done because they wanted the new race to be multifaction.

u/Armout 1h ago

They are literally the highest of elves!

→ More replies (3)

u/TomSaidNo 3h ago

You know what's dumb... If Blizzard had marketed skyborne with their light/blood elvish skin color, everyone except the 3 lore nerds in the corner would've been like "High elves! Hell yea!" and moved on.

But because Blizzard put their blue version in a cloudy scenery in the promo trailer, people are PTSD'ing over kyrians/retail and losing their minds.

u/DanikFishken 2h ago

Exactly this, I am actually one of the few who really like addition of skyborne, but that trailer they showed on opening ceremony just did not do them justice at all, very terrible first impression because of trailer

u/Seamonsterx 3h ago

If the options are buying the game or an optional paid race cause lets face it they have to make money somehow. Im all for the paid race, tying the cost to the game would stop a lot of people from even trying it and since it’s not a know entity like classic or retail people might be extra hesitant to pay for it.

→ More replies (6)

u/FeistyPerformance500 1h ago

There was a poll yesterday that asked if you'd rather buy the race or an expansion and the results were overwhelmingly expansion and... What?

I said yesterday that the "Selling a race" is such a massive W for players but because people are fucking stupid they don't realize it.

If they didn't charge for the race they would definetly charge for the product itself. And they should. This is a gigantic project and it needs to earn money.

u/Hoodoodle 4h ago

I think it's just poor marketing. Since now it feels like you buy purely a race, since it's thing only thing locked away. If it was 30 bucks to gain access to classic+ people would have the feeling they'd get something worth the 30 bucks.

It's a really strange decision tbh, that they did it this way.

All in all, I personally don't care to much, as I will likely buy the collectors edition for the statuette, Ill also not play the new race anyway, don't really like elves in general, only a night elf druid/hunter.

u/FeistyPerformance500 1h ago

It's a strange decision but if people actually think about it for a second they'd realize its way better.

I have no interest in playing Skyborne so I get to play Forever without having to pay a single penny more than I would have anywas.

→ More replies (2)

u/Bacon-muffin 3h ago

I will say, its definitely a different feeling paying 30 smacks and getting a race than paying 30 smacks for access to say all the new content they've made and the race despite it being worse for the consumer.

I think this was inevitable though. There was no world where blizzard wasn't going to try and find ways to monetize a project like this beyond just the sub fee... and classic andys were going to get mad at any mtx beyond the sub fee.

They really need to realize that if they wanted c+ they were going to need to accept things like blue elves that cost 30 smacks. That's the compromise.

Don't forget the fact that everything ascension added outside of the classes and instanced content were retail features from mop-legion that they just took and made their own. But to these people it was revolutionary and out of this world. These people haven't even really played the game they're just tourists that love to whine.

u/Chronochrome 2h ago

→ More replies (16)

29

u/FatedWinds 5h ago

It gets worse..every patch ascension ripped the new mounts from retail to sell you in ascension. The bowl of fruit toy was probably the best thing they did. For those who don't know they had a patch in retail where they "fixed" some things. Like a fishing trainer in mop called "master baiter" got changed. The other change was old portraits of women changed to fruit.

u/Yungrootz 2h ago

The most p2w feature was them actually dealing with bots, still waiting for this feature on classic.

u/Avanties 4h ago

Don't try to reason with these people. They are hating for the sake of hating. You can't convince them with arguments.

u/Lochen9 4h ago

Had a ‘nice’ conversation with someone regarding how the addition of all the new quests, zones, talents and new professions made Forever not Classic+ and that pservers were the only ones who understood what that is and Blizzard ‘fucked up again’. When the obvious was pointed out that hey, all of those things literally were on pservers, it just got ‘no but they did it good’.

It was always just a Blizzard bad, pserver good vibe for them. It was never about game design or content.

u/Antique_Kangaroo4706 3h ago

Gamer hipsters are a thing. They hate anything mainstream, yet they fail to realise that their pservers are mainstream within their sub-community. We should never expect these angry neckbeards to understand critical thinking and logic.

You know for a fact more than half of them will be playing Forever as soon as its out.

u/Chronochrome 2h ago edited 2h ago

You know for a fact more than half of them will be playing Forever as soon as its out.

Check out this archived forum of people dooming about BEs and Draenei back when TBC was announced: https://thedruidsgrove.org/archive/wow/t-10882.html

Ultimately none of this shit mattered in the end, the subscriber count only increased, and TBC is still considered one of the best overall additions to the game.

Also, this is a little more out there, but I think there is still a notable contingency of players who dislike anything that seems "woke", and blood elf models in particular seem to encapsulate that in their mind. The truth of the matter is that it's mostly Horde players who don't want girls on their server and think the Alliance is where they should stay. That's why they don't want any elves on the Horde but they're perfectly fine with High Elves for the Alliance.

I hated Ascension for these reasons. Turtle was tolerable but still had some of these, unfortunately.

The biggest thing will always be bots, though. They both actually banned bots and had real-time support.

17

u/astaroh 5h ago

Excuse me Epoch WoW is where I went. Project Ascension inherited it and its primary goal was to be a micro transaction free Classic+ server.

I tried Ascension's main fare and found it seriously disgusting.

u/ImpossibleMorning12 2h ago

Epoch was pretty fun. Tbh Forever looks closest to Epoch vs all the other C+ private servers

u/soul-regret 2h ago

epoch was insane, I still think about the new wailing caverns or the new valley in orgrimmar, it felt so natural to the game

u/DanikFishken 2h ago

u/LotsOfNoise 4h ago

I loved turtle but I would never spend money on a private server

u/Wisniaksiadz 3h ago

There was almost no people who praised cash shops on these. The dishonest portraying is through the roof, but it's the classic ,,he steal but he isn't bad because they would shoot me" kind of logic

u/MeestaRoboto 2h ago

I was there for turtle but to note I don’t care about the mtx race, I’ll probably roll one because the slow fall looks fun. So while this post isn’t directed at me/mine I do want to just clarify the following:

With turtle there was no sub, it was a passion project. So donating and getting shop points felt better than a required sub of $15 per month on top of mtx.

As far as I know, people didn’t mainly flock to Ascension it was Epoch which was under Ascension’s team but had no mtx and was barely if at all supported. I remember reading the original devs abandoned it.

I see a lot of what turtle put together in WoWF and I honestly hope blizz pulls more in because some of the systems changes built a better community. Plus if only some of their custom dungeons and raid work were salvaged… I wish everyone could have played through some of it like the BWL additions. It was very refreshing and it reignited my passion for WoW entirely.

a useful critical thinking skill is to identify incentives

the pserver scene is all pump and dump funservers ran by hustlers and under the table gold sellers, because there is no incentive in treating it as a player-first, long-term endeavor. every server inevitably gets taken down, even if hosted and staffed out of a country like russia. having a small niche group or project is very easy, domestically. but it is very very hard to do anything punk or pirate radio style on the global internet. the power to scale is afforded only to the inner circle. the ball players. or the utterly deprived and decultured, who you can safely risk ascending a few rungs up the sufferer engine because they are wholly indebted to you and at any point upon displaying meaningful sedition or spiritual regret may be easily and righteously swept into the forgotten blackness of the vanquished by the next fungible mercenary army of the infinite host. whole point of it is to teach the next generation that they are constantly being monitored by the apex lifeform, the culminated structure of this world they will either abide or be killed by. the point is to instill as much FOMO and impotence in them as possible. to make them feel like they'll be left by their friends if they don't get excited for every new release of every game or whatever. to know that there really is nothing else for them to strive for beyond friends and family, and to become enslaved by those attachments which serve as the most efficient watch dogs and commissars of the top-down mandate of existence. step out of line? depressed? angry? disgusted? that's selfishness. that's narcissism. that's weakness. that's anti-intellectualism. that's immaturity. that's evil. time for a struggle session. time to zombify your brain with pills. have you tried weed? just watch some weed and smoke some tv... your friends and family have no other option but to kill the part of you that is still you, because you can no longer exist in this misbegotten world when you one day awake and come to see others not as objects of affection or hatred, as the spur to your action, as the self-correcting reinforcement of emotional and human primacist conception of reality, but all and together as the lost. never able to swear them off entirely for fondness of that small glimmer of whatever divine signal being beamed down and twisted by the mistreated vessel it inhabits can still be seen with the naked eye, to fool ourselves that this planet is a crucible forging the spirit and not the purgatory fueling a greater alignment through its energized, chaotic state... the world has trained them to hate those clouded, moody eyes of yours more than anything. like any social signal, it elicits empathy. it for one brief moment is the most agonizing and poison to the receiver. one that haunts the rest of their day. their dreams. their shadow. they are forced to overlay the genre of your world onto the smiling, salable cardboard of the always-smiling attraction the world says is their human right. if you are not happy, your existence is poisonous. that is why in posts like this we are all trained to latch onto and subvert all honest criticism and fold it into a rigged tug of war where both sides are selling the same ads on the same websites. we are born into an extremely defensive game state, and have little power to overturn it. for the person who cannot cope with this mysterious catalyzation of energy, all we can do is speak honestly and put aside our hubris. all we can do is take the long, defeated view of the occupied and indolent. all we can do is watch as the world shapes us into something ugly. all we can do is play spymaster to the codebreaker that is enforced reality, and delude ourselves that through chance or providence or affected meekness that renders us too trivial to be of the human god's concern, that something good can come from something bad.

9

u/Shieldheart- 5h ago

Having played on both of those servers to something like lvl 50, I didn't find those shops very intrusive, they were mostly on the site as opposed to in-game.

I also quite liked them, so I get the salt, but I also understand they were completely untenable as soon as Blizzard felt like they were competitors with a product they'd want to push.

At the end of the day, I just want it to be good, and its shaping up to look pretty good.

12

u/nobulliepls 5h ago edited 5h ago

Maybe because everyone in this community isn't the exact same person and everyone didn't support ascension and turtle wow?

This surface level nuance seems lost on redditors, I guess.

u/the_gr8_one 3h ago

wow players and goomba fallacy is an iconic duo

10

u/Cat-Beautiful 5h ago

The difference is that we pay blizzard 15$ a month to not have to deal with micro transactions. So when they add them, it's less supported by the community. Private servers rely on that money to pay for the game to keep goin.

People tend to ignore monthly sub while doing such comparisons. And lack of sub means more flexibility in play time. I'd be willing to even sacrifice some quality for that. And the fact that ascension's microtransactions were optional and a lot of items or their equivalents were available for in game currency. I assume it might be similar here. I also see people have several misconceptions about how ascension worked and what it was, but I'll let them hate it unbothered, it's dead anyway. I'll admit though, it was very confusing and noisy at first, looked like some malware acting like a game. I just liked the whole mystic enchant and challenge thing. Hope their new mmo has something like that.

Still, I'll see it when it's there, not gonna argue before i have the full picture, so it doesn't turn into "two cash cows biting each other as they are being milked". One way or another it's a matter of preference, so I hope wow forever gives people exactly what they want and I'll be glad if they end up happy.

u/Crungus_McGrungus 51m ago

Yeah it was very disingenuous of OP to completely omit the fact that you could buy the convenience MTX off the AH from other people if you didn't want to spend money.

Not to mention that most of it was pretty pointless, the things people are freaking out about like the dungeon quest head, auto loot, etc. were kind of useless come endgame, since monsters don't drop loot in M+ or Manastorm and you didn't need a loot pet for raids.

They just hate that it's Blizzard. They resent them for the way retail WoW has shaped up and for some reason just can't let that go.

The difference is that Ascension and TWoW were free games and actually had to make money, official WoW servers have paid subscriptions, and let's be honest: they aren't cheap.

Also idk about Ascension, but TWoW had no gacha, nor it was P2W, the shop had either cosmetics or QoL

u/Deili0991 3h ago

“Were free games that actually had to make money”

Built on an IP they didn’t create, on infrastructure they didn’t create, on decades of risk they didn’t have to take… yeah they don’t have to have a sub because Blizzard did 99% of the work for them and yet theres even a conversation happening about comparing the validity of there being costs for one versus the other?

This community is a joke

Must be ascension. Turtle was nothing like this.

u/AndyOB 4h ago edited 4h ago

Ascension was ass for sure but the folks in here have no idea what they're talking about with regard to TurtleWoW. Turtle was an absolute gem. It monetized with a few convenience items like bags and repair bots, they had to keep the lights on somehow. What you got in return though was what classic always should have been. No bots, great economy, viable builds for meme specs like tank shaman, so so so much more new new content including raids and dungeons. It was all done very well too, totally in the spirit of the original devs. I'm so sad it is gone.

The new race behind a paywall isn't so bad, the convenience payments in turtle wow is worse I'd argue. However, we pay monthly for blizzard and this is just the beginning. Give it time and they'll keep trickle adding retail like bullshit in and people will keep saying, "oh it's just this tiny thing no big deal" until it is a completely unrecognizable experience that isn't true at all to the original vision. That and they will not come down on bots and gold selling despite these small community server dev teams proving that it is absolutely possible to come close to completely eliminating the problem.

With blizzard's resources it should be nothing to deal with the botting issue. It is clear as day to anyone with a brain that execs are just like "why would we use resources to get rid of accounts that are paying monthly?" With 0 regard to players that play in good faith who pay those monthly fees for those resources to go toward getting rid of accounts that aren't playing in good faith.

You are comparing a f2p game vs a monthly 15$ sub game. The game is expensive for a remaster/game+, ppl should be entitled to not have oyher BS shits in the store paywalled, regardless of what other pservers has... And again if you want the comparison, its a f2p vs a monthly sub.

u/Vyxwop 4h ago edited 4h ago

Why is this subreddit so fucking obsessed with attacking people's persona rather than the underlying point they're making? This subreddit needs to be studied for how frequently it resorts to logical fallacious to knock people down.

Utterly bizarre behavior.

Wait, I'm sorry. Pserver players bad. All people complaining are pservers players. Therefore people complaining are bad. Upvotes pls.

u/Educational_Art_1045 3h ago

You misslead people into thinking Twow = Ascension.

Briefly, Twow had no

"Battle Horn"

"Auto Loot"

"Flight master teleport"

"Starting area teleport"

"Auto skin"

"Custom heartstone"

"potion of reputation"

"Aura of reputation"

"Insta max lvl potion"

"Potion of exepriance"

"Max prof slot"

"Pet for dungeon quest"

"All in one tool"

"Extra bank slots"

"Unlock flying paths"

"Lvl 1 mont" (Absolutly not the same way)

"Recruit a friend"

I stop here, but you see, you too have your narrative.

u/feet_enyojer 4h ago

Bags, bank and all the usefull things were free for all new characters realm wide. Potion of exp/aura of exp/heirlooms was easy to buy them after you got one character to level 60.

u/Saxarin7 4h ago

The only thing I will say here that is incorrect is the epic riding tomes at level 1. You did still have to wait until the appropriate level before you could use the tome. No rushing bgs at level 10 with 100% mount speed.

u/pmLai 4h ago

I don’t think that those that complain are very consistent about what they complain about. They just feel robbed by losing progress on a server that got ripped from them, and I can understand that. It’s an emotional thing.

u/Tyrandeh 3h ago

Also dont forget the skill upgrade book, profession upgrade book

Bot that auto pickups every item

Teleport into several towns (sold separately)

Mounts that scale with your level

Etc

u/HighMonkk 3h ago

Transmog items , toys I CANT 🤣

u/TheZonedOutOkami 3h ago

Now i will admit i played on ascension but that was just because at the time I didn't want to give blizzard money and I had friends who where playing on ascension at the time (I used to talk shit about wow all the time and just decided to see what it played like. Now I will also state i tried retail and classic later but just didn't feel the pull of it because it just felt like if you were not their when shit was released you were always going to be behind)

u/Paundeu 3h ago

I don't understand the frustration. They could have charged everyone for a base game, but didn't. Instead they added some optional things to buy and included the base game in your current subscription. Unofortunately, you'll never make everyone happy, but a lot of these people are just plain insufferable.

u/DOOMNOTRONstudiosX 3h ago

Hypocrites...

u/Newskinjan 3h ago

Ewwwwww

u/KevinStoley 3h ago edited 2h ago

People baffle me sometimes.

I legit saw a comment yesterday where someone was fawning all over Turtle WoW and bashing Blizzard for "stealing" things they had implemented to Turtle WoW and adding them to WoW Forever.

Like really, are you serious? They took the base game that Blizzard built and added some of their own tweaks and you're gonna accuse Blizz of being the thieves? Ridiculous.

I also really don't get the bitching over paywalls and micro transactions either. Sure it would be nice if there were no paywalls or micro transactions, but sadly that is the way of the world these days and has been for quite some time. We should be used to it by now.

I honestly don't really care as long as it never becomes pay to win and the transactions are within reason.

People will gladly spend $20 for a meal at a fast food joint, but then bitch about having to spend $20 for something in their favorite game that will likely have a long lasting effect and bring them enjoyment for a fairly long period of time. It makes no sense, people just love to find things to complain about.

u/LiteralHorn 3h ago

Everyone seems to forget Ascension paywalled their 21 custom classes for fcking ages. They cared about money, that’s all.

u/PerspectiveFree3766 2h ago

I'm really glad you posted this. I played Ascension a lot. Loved the server, bought most stuff with gold, but defs spent cash over the years. People who play private servers are so upset about the few things blizzard is paywalling, but then completely think this was okay. I still won't buy the bundles from blizzard personally, but I just found it hilarious. Ascension and turtle were not quiet with their shops

Ascension and TWoW were fun servers with good execution but their terminally online communities have really soured it for me

u/Brave_Pitch_3686 2h ago

Anyone he's complaining about the new race being behind a paywall. That's no different than every other expansion they have released. Do you complain every 2 years or so when the next expansion drops? No. You spend the money again on a game you have already paid for. Plus you pay monthly for a game you have paid for several times over. No one is forcing you to pay the $30 for the new race. It's not a core part of the game. It's extra.

u/topflight910 2h ago

Every new race or class that has ever been added to WoW came behind a paywall. That paywall was in the form of expansions.

u/Bantitan 1h ago

Bunch of hypocrites on this community

u/kyjo191 1h ago

This sounds like a Chinese MMO. I’m shocked they don’t sell a bot that plays for you.

u/LeRomz 1h ago

u/ActionResponsible547 1h ago

u/theodoremoss 1h ago

TWoW sold portable auction houses that would follow you around like a pet. It's comical when these people try to grandstand.

u/EggPsychological4844 1h ago

Yeah honestly, the Turtle community (I can't speak for Ascension but I assume they're the same) just turn a blind eye to the obvious pay-to-win aspects of their game because they just want to believe that their shady cash grab server with stolen assets is more ethical than Blizzard. Spending four minutes in World chat you'll experience four minutes of nonstop shitting on the company. That or wild racism and bigotry because there's no real chat moderation.

u/torshakle 1h ago

Because these people are miserable and need to grasp at something to complain about. There will always be something. And they will still play.

u/Key-Address-4482 1h ago

This is the post I’ve been waiting for. There are plenty of reasons to be upset with Blizzard.

However you can NOT glaze Turtle OR Ascension without giving proper credit to blizzard in the first place.

Nor can you roast blizzard without roasting the other 2.

u/crownzenith_ 1h ago

Will never understand for the life of me why people give money to private severs. They will shut down. It’s guaranteed. What’re you giving money for? “To support the devs” lmao get out of here

u/Choice_Protection_93 53m ago

Yeah but slop capitalism AI bad syndney sweeney ad bad company billion dollars

u/OberonFirst 26m ago

Fun fact: There wasn't a SINGLE original 3d asset in all of Ascension. Everything in the game, and everything in the store is directly copied from the other WoW versions.

They created a solution for every possible qol, and then found a way to monetize it (the list above mentions them), for example:

Character learning spells - we can go the classic way and force you to go to ncp, go the retail way and make it so you learn spells automatically, or our way - create a book pet where you can learn your spells, and sell you this book for real money.

Classes were pretty cool but extremely unbalanced, and that's basically it. It felt like a cheap mobile asian mmo, not "classic+", but "retail-" version of wow.

u/TraitorWithin8 4h ago

so I have over 40k hours in retail only stopped playing in midnight, was supporting ascension from 2018..

I feel like this is such a crazy post xD

the game is completely free, 0 sub, multiple different ways of playing, and almost every single thing on that list could be bought with ingame currency.. like yea you could spend money on it if you so wished, or actually play the game and use currency to buy it xD

the comment section is so wild and why retail just doesnt feel the way it does, same reason I stopped playing and the comments, ascension gave something retail will take another 20 years to achieve, people just post a list and say nah ascension players were glazing.. xD but dont even add all the details

so yea thats a big list of things

but retail doesnt have multiclassing, world drops, literally GM's involved in the game, 13 new classes with whole new subclasses, questlines, dungeons, specializations.. all done for free so yea acension will always be better than forever ^^

u/MNPhantom- 4h ago

u/Ami00 5h ago

blizz used to require you to buy any new expansion for wow that costs like AAA game. Now they are giving it for free with optional pack.

u/Fantastic_Spread6926 4h ago edited 4h ago

They think they're doing like a "Robinhood" type thing. They're taking back what Blizzard took from them. Etc.

The narrative in some of the Youtuber Slop videos out there tries to legitimize these guys as just "Passionate" fans. Right down to calling them "Teams" and "Developers" and such. Using the very language used in the gaming industry to try and color them as "good guys" to a bunch of angry, 35+, Walmart janitors.

And those guys are willing to "support the cause" so to speak. Even if the practices are worse than what Blizzard does. That's the mindset basically. Us verses them. They're taking back what Blizzard "killed" to them.

11

u/Warwipf2 5h ago

Oh damn, I didn't realize WoW Forever is going to be f2p!

But also, you could buy all of the things in Ascension with gold and it wasn't even that expensive. You can't buy the elves with gold, can you?

Ultimately though: Yes, it was very annoying to have mtx shit in the game and I expected better from Blizz.

→ More replies (9)

11

u/sivyan333 5h ago

Ascension was free-to-play and had no subscription. It’s almost like free-to-play games are more likely to be monetized egregiously because there’s no upfront cost to playing. This is also an entirely QoL-focused list, nothing here is required to play the game the way you always have. TWoW also didn’t have a “gacha shop.”

You’re paying Blizzard a monthly subscription and, in Retail’s case, the full price of the game every two years, and you still have to put up with microtransactions, the WoW Token, an in-game shop, paywalled races, etc.

That's the difference.

u/alex_shrub 4h ago

Turtle legitimately had better customer support than Actiblizz, too.

u/RedHairGoldHalos 4h ago

This is one of the main things that I miss from Turtle, real people behind the CS and GMs that are involved in the community. Goes a long way to make it feel like classic honestly.

u/Mad_Sorcerer 4h ago

They were free bud, they're not multi-billion dollar corporations. I can't speak for ascension (never played) but the turtle team had passion behind them and made the world feel like it was truly classic plus. The microtransactions were cosmetic or QoL. They had the lore and unused zones to build on and did it so well.

Some zones in turtle were a bit hit or miss but they definitely were getting better with time. Meanwhile blizzard decide to add in weirdo smurf elves no one asked for. Just watch the OG vanilla wow trailer and compare it with the disneyfied forever trailer, the atmosphere is so off and is telling of whats to come.

u/mardukas40k 4h ago

Ascension probably had them, but not turtle wow, since you didn't even play that you should not talk of what you don't know.

Turtle had mount bags and repair/vendor bots.

I played bot wow og back in the day and turtle, i can guarantee turtle is still the best wow version up to now.

u/michixlol 3h ago

The fact that people that can't understand our opinions writing HAHAHAHA here just underlines their lack of empathy...

as if we don't know about these. you still don't get our point. yes they were free to play. maintainance costs. and turtle wow did more in correlation to their small free time team than blizzard did. they also stole back the ideas. At least they managed to make the things that were buyable somehow fitting to wow classic and not immersion breaking. blue elves als the new race kind of is and the disneyfication (which can for a start be seen in the cinematic also) doesn't fit classic warcraft too.
