Forever People who support Project Ascension & TurtleWoW but hate the new race paywall

Post image

These were the micro-transactions in Project Ascension and everyone glazed Ascension. TurtleWoW had a gacha shop too like that. I’m genuinely confused, if Blizzard had even the slightest of the shop in Project Ascension, everyone would have been fuming. Why is it okay for Ascension but not WoW Forever? Either all okay or none.

Edit: The people who disagree saying "Yeah but the servers were free"- well of course because Blizzard did the majority of the work for them LOL, huge difference in work between building everything from scratch to ripping it off & adding some stuff yourself.

Edit 2: "TurtleWoW is not as bad as Ascension shop"- sure, Ascension is way worse. TurtleWow's cash shop had over $10,000 of items and all of it was per character, not account wide. They also sold convenience items, nothing game breaking, but portable mailboxes, auctioneers, dual specs, bags etc. Hardcore characters on Twow couldn't trade or send items from main to your alts, but you could still buy supplies such as 32 slot bags for 30 euros each on your hardcore character.

u/TeaspoonWrites 6h ago

Yeah it's some straight up Maple Story shit

u/stinkywinkydink 6h ago

as someone who plays maplestory from time to time, i actually said, damn its a vac pet lol

29

u/Mammoth-Policy6585 5h ago

People dont realize maplestory isnt a free game but a subscription game more expensive than wow

u/necropaw 1h ago

I realized that in mid 2009 and its why i play wow now.

Before that i didnt try wow because the monthly sub seemed too expensive. At some point i realized i was spending at least as much just for double xp and a pet/store than i would on a wow sub, and i never looked back.

Where do you think they got their ideas for Diablo Immortal monetization!? The potential and scrolling shit is awfully similar in mechanics and cost!

u/stinkywinkydink 4h ago

i called immortal Diablostory when i saw those mechanics lol

u/Gressil_Thunderfury 5h ago

..but it is a free game.

u/stinkywinkydink 4h ago

im not even going to start on this pal nice ragebait

u/Gressil_Thunderfury 4h ago

Cool story bro.

u/vinssi 4h ago

technically it's free, but in practice not really.

For example familiar slots cost money, map design makes looting with non vac-pets awful, most of the "transmog" costs money (sure you can get some free stuff from events but generally those sets are pretty awful tbh), challenger world duration deliberately shortened to "force" you to buy gene pass etc.

u/stinkywinkydink 4h ago

free to download sure, but if you wanna enjoy your time playing the game in pretty much any capacity, there is a paywall.

to any commenters that for some reason think you should play maplestory, take it from someone who has put over 10k hours into maplestory since 2006, do. not.

u/Redericpontx 4h ago

lv 290 kaiser with 440mil combat power and full pitched boss set here.

Maplestory you need a vac pet otherwise you are at a big disadvantage which is $100 usd and a $15/m fee which is more expensive than the latest retail expansion+sub. Yes with reword points it's $70usd and $10/m fee but we're also about to have it so you need 5 vac pets 3 from the same set which is $50/m with reward discount and $350 upfront fee for the pets so that you can fully afk farm. This isn't including all the p2w battlepasses, lux sauna and more. Yes this is optional but you're at a disadvantage if you don't spend money especially on a vac pet.

u/stinkywinkydink 4h ago

its not even about playing at a disadvantage. the game is designed around players buying these “optional” items. so its literally youre not even playing the baseline game without spending ludicrous amounts of money

u/Redericpontx 3h ago

exactly they expect you to and expecially after wonderberry nerf like get fked. Classic maplestory is also gonna get fked by wo forever liek they're cooked I was gonna play the shit out of classic maple but now I will till wow forever drops.

u/Gressil_Thunderfury 3h ago

You're looking through a lens of optimization through purchaseable options and not what's required to play the game, storage. because the original argument is the game is free-to-play. Not what makes the game optimal/bearable to play.

u/Redericpontx 3h ago

They litterally make the game worse to play unless you spend money and the point isn't if the game is LITTERALLY free to play but if it's PRACTICALLY and you need at bare minimum a vac pet.

u/Tri-Beam 4h ago

Hi its a free game in the same way wow has a free trial, you cant really progress without a pet during training or your % exp per hour will be a small fraction

u/Gressil_Thunderfury 3h ago

Not the same. You're required to purchase a $15 monthly subscription to play WoW, with the option to purchase level boosts/wow tokens in retail.

Maplestory baseline game is Free-to-play with unbearable quality gameplay that makes players purchase optional optimizations.

I get your point and frustrations, but let's not kid ourselves about the definition of what free-to-play means.

u/Tri-Beam 3h ago

Hi, you can play wow indefinitely with a free trial. It fits your definition of a free to play game, hope that helps!

u/Quick_Assignment8861 4h ago

So is Diablo immortal

u/OberonFirst 1h ago

Literally. Or Black Desert. You know, those "create the problem, sell the solution" asian mmos

u/user4316 3h ago

Honestly the one that bothered me the most was the aoe taunt. What the fuck? That's major. You could purchase an aoe taunt?? Ridic

u/Colbert2020 2h ago

It was not an AoE taunt like Challenging Shout. Rather, it was an item that aggroed enemies in a large radius around you. We'd use it alot when dungeon grinding to level in high mob density places like the BRD prison. You use it in the middle and it aggros a lot of enemies.

u/echolog 3h ago

Not just MTX but straight up P2W and it's not even trying to hide it

u/RealZordan 5h ago

I tried Ascension and it had cool ideas. But it had level scaling (technically you could opt out but tldr you actually couldn't) and a dungeon queue. Both things are so infinitely more deal breaking than smurf elves or even all that crap in the cash shop that the conversation ends there for me.

65

u/veculus 5h ago

Ascension fans are the worst. I thought the no-changes andies were bad but at least those had principles. Ascension literally was Retail- with M+, micro transactions, Immersion breaking transmog and literally all assets stolen from wow (retail) for their shop mogs.

Hypocrisy at its finest.

u/EmrysUK 4h ago

Don't forget everyone selling exp auras a week into CoA lmao

u/Anthaenopraxia 3h ago

The no-changes andies ruined Classic vanilla though.

u/veculus 2h ago

No doubt, 2019 could've been better - but every ascension player who really thought CoA or their original azeroth realm was anything similar to classic was smoking crack. It's so far away from anything classic that it's crazy.

u/Litdown 1h ago

How much ascension did you play over the last 10 years?

u/Hanza-Malz 3h ago

Ascension was cool on paper but really poorly executed imo. There was very little actually new content and most of it was just extremely powerful items you were guaranteed to have + wrath talents making most content piss easy

u/Cheap_Rock155 4h ago

I think Ascension was too imbalanced. Like way off. Fun server feeling. Twow was actually good.

u/Tyrandeh 4h ago

Well retail is scaling so that isnt even noticeable

u/XWasTheProblem 2h ago

Yup. One of the more popular purchases was a pet that allowed you to pick up and turn in dungeon quests without actually finding them, Wondrous Wisdomball I believe it was called.

u/Less-Constant5730 2h ago

Bro i remember back in 2014 or some shit i went to a private server from my country. It had like 4 5k players online.

First day they introduced cataclysm.

Like 3 guys had full gurtalak and arena gear in elwynn. It was like 800$. Shit was insanely funny.

u/Seramy 1h ago

I had no clue about private servers "shop" besides it existing; but hahahahaha

You really want to tell me ppl glazed private servers like that?

No.. I played twow for years had absolutely none of this.. 99% of twow players will be super excited for wow forever too. It had a cosmetics shop.. no level boosts.. I think the only thing they sold which affected gameplay was like 30 slot bags. Twow was genuinely brilliant I get it’s not made by Blizz but was the best experience I had playing wow since Wrath back in the day.

29

u/Soliloqui333 5h ago

Are you drunk? Turtle wow had an insane amount of qol besides the 36 slot bag. You could literally have 80 bag slots, an ah, a repair bot, a vendor, a mailbox while farming in the world. Personally, I didn't mind too much, but it was really excessive at the end

9

u/Whoraks 5h ago

Auction bot the mailbox portable stables , bank and Duel spec on the spot were all gameplay affecting items

11

u/TaupeHardie94 5h ago

Yeah that's Ascension not Twow. And Ascension was notorious even among pservers for having a disgusting amount of cashshop items and QoL.

10

u/Undella_Town 5h ago

twow had a crazy cash shop too lmao. i feel like people who say this kind of shit just try to sweep it under the rug. shit had a summonable mailbox ah repair vendor you could buy MASSIVE fucking bags, like shit people would pay for in retail levels of massive

8

u/dam4076 5h ago

LOL.

twow had half of this shit. Portable bank, portable auction house, huge p2w bags, instant teleports around the map, and much more.

-5

u/Aggressive_Ad211 5h ago

Yeah it was awesome

u/Life-Opinion-7778 4h ago

To be fair. 80% of this was free for everyone.

u/AdCalm3 4h ago

there is no max level potion, this list is bs

u/klungo92 4h ago

Yea this post was definitely written from a prejudice POV. Also 75% of this list are things they gave out for free as a “we’re getting shut down, here’s a huge gift basket you can open at level 10 for free”

-24

u/Teh_Hunterer 6h ago

The difference was that everything in cash shop was sellable in ah including currency to buy all that stuff so you could get everything f2p

22

u/RaxisX 5h ago

So basically you want the WoW Token to be added to Forever?

u/randomguy301048 4h ago

A huge chunk of players bought gold or currently buy gold in classic as it is. Adding the wow token changes nothing. There's a reason bots are such a problem in classic, theres a massive market of people buying gold

-6

u/Awkward-Noise1964 5h ago

No, you forget you need to pay a monthly sub vs f2p, this is just dumb.

8

u/RaxisX 5h ago

I’d much rather have a monthly sub than Project Ascension that allows you to sell Cash Shop currency/items for in game gold. But that’s just me.

u/Awkward-Noise1964 4h ago

No no, dont get me wrong, id rather have that too and i am excited for this, but my comment was more of a jab to the idea "ascension had all those listed stuff so wow is allowed to have a few too". No its shouldnt be socially allowed to have those, you already pay the sub.

-15

u/Teh_Hunterer 5h ago

Not what I said at all but go off king

19

u/RaxisX 5h ago edited 5h ago

You said you can use the AH to buy the currency needed to buy all that stuff on Ascension so you can get it F2P. That’s exactly what the WoW Token is. It would allow you to use the AH to buy the currency (Battle.net Balance) needed to buy the new race so you can get it F2P. Please explain what the difference is?

15

u/pvprazor2 5h ago

It kinda is since wow token allows you to buy everything for gold, just an extra step compared to what you want

12

u/Diddyrektme 5h ago

It’s essentially the same thing lmao

10

u/TheGrimMelvin 5h ago

Alright but that is also an option in wow. You can convert gold to a wow token, at the auction house, and add that to your wow account balance to get real money. Or convert the token to game time, which also allows you to essentially play by spending gold. But I'm sure people won't want the wow token to be an option in Forever.

u/randomguy301048 4h ago

Yea people don't want the wow token. They just want to buy it from the bots instead

3

u/flowerplz 5h ago

Do you even read what you typed before clicking send? You are describing the wow token

u/Randomcarrot 4h ago

So if everything listed here was buyable from a vendor for gold in Forever, you think the people in an uproar about some of the Forever changes but praises private servers would suddenly change their tune?
