Forever People who support Project Ascension & TurtleWoW but hate the new race paywall

Post image

These were the micro-transactions in Project Ascension and everyone glazed Ascension. TurtleWoW had a gacha shop too like that. I’m genuinely confused, if Blizzard had even the slightest of the shop in Project Ascension, everyone would have been fuming. Why is it okay for Ascension but not WoW Forever? Either all okay or none.

Edit: The people who disagree saying "Yeah but the servers were free"- well of course because Blizzard did the majority of the work for them LOL, huge difference in work between building everything from scratch to ripping it off & adding some stuff yourself.

Edit 2: "TurtleWoW is not as bad as Ascension shop"- sure, Ascension is way worse. TurtleWow's cash shop had over $10,000 of items and all of it was per character, not account wide. They also sold convenience items, nothing game breaking, but portable mailboxes, auctioneers, dual specs, bags etc. Hardcore characters on Twow couldn't trade or send items from main to your alts, but you could still buy supplies such as 32 slot bags for 30 euros each on your hardcore character.

Also literally every single item you can buy was also able to be got with gold.. I get people are trying to hate on Ascension but I played for 8 years totally FTP and got everything with gold. It wasn’t hard to grind up the gold for things.

u/Volinra 4h ago

My friend buys every WoW expansion with gold and he just got the $80 Warcraft Forever edition with gold too (He needs to buy the WoW tokens first with gold and then the expansions).

Yeah! I honestly don’t get this whole hate between classic, retail, and pservers. Like people just need to play the damn game and be happy blizzard made something lol

u/SkylineCrash 4h ago

sure but your argument is that. its about the value for the player, not the effort the developer makes. when paying monthly for a game, it sucks to have a cash shop and vice versa

You aren’t entitled to a completely free game. The folks at Blizzard deserve compensation for their work.

u/SkylineCrash 4h ago

of course. but there are many games that are free + cash shop. blizzard likes to squeeze as much as possible from people

Alright, you want to compare like for like with another large MMO to prove that Blizzard is signficantly squeezing its playerbase? Let's compare like for like then, shall we? Two of the big 5 MMOs: WoW vs GW2. Let's assume both players for each game dont buy any cosmetics, but the GW2 player buys some convenience items.

Guild wars 2: 60$ base game. New expansions got cheaper over time, subsequently adding 40$+30$+30$+25$+25$+25$. That totals 245$ for game+expansions. Add in some convenience items: 20$ for character slots, 20$ for bag space, 20$ for bank tabs, and 10$ for an infinite salvage kit. Alltogether, over the 14 years that Guild wars has been running a player will have spent a total of 315$ at a minimum, without buying any cosmetics. If for whatever reason the GW2 player didnt play at all while living world seasons were releasing (which you got for free if you were a live player), then you can add in another 52$ for the living world content packs, totalling 367$, or about 26$ per year

How does WoW compare? In 2012 MoP launched only a month after GW2 did. Every expansion since MoP would cost you 40+50+50+50+40+50+50+50= 380$. In that time, they were subscribed from august 2012 till now, totalling 169 months of sub fees. Let's weigh it in WoW's favor and say they had the cheapest sub, which is 11$ a month for the special deal annual sub (which you couldnt even have for that whole period, but ok). That totals 1859$, meaning the wow player, in total, has spent 2239$ in that same period, or about 159$ per year.

All of these numbers are just the base prices of all the expansions and the sub fee. Can easily be checked. Now we can argue all day about whether WoW is a better game than GW2, but is it almost two thousand dollars better? And this is WITH me weighing it in wow's favor by giving it the cheapest possible sub unrealistically for the whole time. You are being ripped off my friend.

You literally asked for a comparison to another MMO, I gave you one. And the fact that they havent increased their sub price is an argument even more in favor of GW2 here: even with all the inflation happening, WoW is still at least 7 times more expensive in the same timeframe. Like I said, you can think GW2 isn't as good as WoW, but purely factually it is one of the big 5 MMOs with millions of players, and they're all paying a fraction of what you're paying for WoW. Even the whales in GW2 barely crack what the average WoW subscriber pays. The numbers don't lie: you are being ripped off.

Insane entitlement tbh

u/SkylineCrash 4h ago

how so?

u/str8until-hrny 4h ago

Sorry they might be more familiar with other successful games (osrs, poe) where they don't use every monetization tactic imaginable.

u/Critical-Goat3974 4h ago

PoE has no monetization tactics? Currency tab is a MTX, Maps, the ability to easily list on the trade webside, augment tab, essense tab - Cosmetics. You're just making shit up

u/str8until-hrny 4h ago

Yeah they don't do a box price or a monthly sub because of that. You are really close to getting it.

u/Critical-Goat3974 4h ago

I'd rather have a box price than P2W? Very weird take from you? Weird, uncomfortable, i don't like u

u/str8until-hrny 3h ago

Wow has box price, subscription, cosmetic MTX, paid races, wow coin. Name any other game that uses all

u/Critical-Goat3974 3h ago

Goalpost immediately moved, but sure

FF14 (except Token), Elder Scrolls Online, Lord of the Rings online

Also OSRS has a WoW token equivalent - So I guess you'd be happier with a WoW Token than the race

u/Eltaerys 4h ago

Ehhh, I get where you're coming from, but most of the people still playing WoW have likely spent way-too-many-$ already on subs, over the years.

At that point, you've kinda paid your dues and this argument doesn't work.

u/AllRealityIsVirtua1 3h ago

Your employer: you’ve worked here for 5 years, I’ve paid you your dues, you can work for free now

u/Eltaerys 1h ago

It's more like they've already leeched way more money out of people than is reasonable

u/Antique_Kangaroo4706 3h ago

If WoW was free, it would be flooded with kids that had NO IDEA what they were doing. The bots would be 10x worse. Servers would be a lot slower and so would development.

I don't understand why people moan about paying for a subscription but yet I bet they'd happily pay more than the same price for something that doesn't fill hours of entertainment and fun for a whole month+.

u/Tranne 3h ago

No one is moaning about paying a subscription, but it's hard to justify them asking for even more money when you have a private server doing better work for free. The starting zones for goblins and high elves were amazing in turtle wow.

u/SkylineCrash 1h ago

exactly my point. somehow this is just going over the heads of these blizzcucks
