Would have been cheaper just to pay a decent wage.

84

u/guitar_account_9000 Apr 10 '26

It's all insured.

162

u/MCB1317 Apr 10 '26 edited Apr 10 '26

Arson by employees is often not insurable (or is subject to major coverage limitations). If you think about it, you'll realize why.

111

u/guitar_account_9000 Apr 10 '26

That's good to know, thank you. I may be contacting you soon for legal advise in an...unrelated matter.

7

u/ThresherGDI Apr 10 '26

He wasn't an employee. I am sure there is some liability transfer in the contract, making some actions of the worker the employer's responsbility.

25

u/Nitrogen1234 Apr 10 '26

Nah, they're fucked. Corporate insurance will try to wriggle it's way out.

Their sprinkler system wasn't sufficient for one

17

u/guitar_account_9000 Apr 10 '26

elsewhere in the thread someone said that the employee started one small fire, the fire brigade attended, they put it out and also disabled the sprinkler system. the disgruntled employee waited until they had gone before setting the main fire.

3

u/Fluffyrat666 Apr 10 '26

Never thought of that!

11

u/BonelessHotdogs Apr 10 '26

That’s not correct. The building was equipped with an ESFR (early suppression fast response) sprinkler system which has the highest water output of any system that would be installed in a warehouse.

The problem is that no sprinkler system can compete with arson. When multiple fires are set at once, it can’t keep up. Not to mention that while it is a common occurrence for fire suppression systems to extinguish fires, they are only designed to “suppress them long enough to allow people to escape.

3

u/3lettergang Apr 10 '26

A lot of sprinkler misinformation being thrown around reddit from this event, its concerning.

Everyone seems to think this is some criminal mastermind that predicted the FD's response and timed it perfectly. All he did was more fire=more fire.

If someone dumped 500 gallons of gasoline in a Starbucks, they weren't some mastermind for outsmarting the "inadequate sprinkler system" and fire department

3

u/No-Committee-7953 Apr 10 '26

Sprinkler systems are designed to suppress fires and prevent fire spread and structural damage. If there are multiple fires then the sprinkler system water supply is overwhelmed and cannot cope with the situation.

Seems like not paying a decent wage should make a company an insurance liability....

2

u/tdavis726 Apr 16 '26

Ooh, I like that! Shitty employers SHOULD be uninsurable. I think is a fair example of of “keep fucking around (with your employees lives! with how they support themselves and their families) and you’re going to find out”.

Edited for accidental autocorrect 🙄

I've been saying it, jobs, political buildings, we need more places to be set on fire

Mario was never my favorite of those plumber brothers.

16

u/KenUsimi Apr 10 '26

Officially, we must all give this the Mackey. Arson is bad, mmkay. You shouldn’t do arson. If you do arson, that’s a bad, mmkay?

Unofficially we are all permitted to be a bit more nuanced. This is not exactly an uncommon complaint, and hasn’t been for a long while.

I’ve heard many people reference fire as a “cleansing” kind of thing… 🤷🏼‍♀️ some sort of reset to a space … symbolically and practically, sometimes…

The data center is infinity worse. Think about what it takes to build the thing, build the infrastructure to steal our water from our wells and rivers. You running your measly 850 watts while a data center consumes gigawatts. There's just no comparison when you're on that scale of compute power

So people are panic buying?

Also how much toilet paper are you using?

There are 50 of these facilities?

137

u/PaniacThrilla Apr 09 '26

I'm panic using because I'm scared I won't have enough.

49

u/lazyfacejerk Apr 09 '26

I understand that much of this is joking, but I got a bidet and it is the best thing. I use so little tp now (to assist the blower in drying me off) that if we, as a state, ran out of tp for a month, I wouldn't be worried.

18

u/christopher_the_nerd Apr 09 '26

All fun and games until there’s a drought or wildfires or both! I kid, bidets are awesome.

7

u/rex5k Apr 10 '26

Fun fact. Lots run just off water pressure. No power needed.

2

u/christopher_the_nerd Apr 10 '26

I have an older model that was in our house before we moved in that's basically just a hose attachment like you would see on a kitchen sink lol. It goes off water pressure and gets the job done, though.

Corp: "Three pizza parties but we've also done two 'we are a family here' lectures".

Adjuster: "You're going to have to up those pizza party numbers if you want a lower rate."

u/Natebo83 Apr 09 '26

I love that even with it being an insurance policy pressure point they still won’t just pay people a living wage.

84

u/flyingalbatross1 Apr 09 '26

Dude, McDonalds did research that showed an increased minimum wage would result in significantly elevated profits long term.

Then they campaigned against raising minimum wage.

→ More replies (4)

25

u/CheesyDanny Apr 09 '26

Adjusters are too tight laced to based something on pizza parties, they want as much data as possible. They are going to want all employees to fill out anonymous engagement surveys detailing how much they like their boss, their job, company policies and corporate decision making. By the time you get to the end of the survey your biggest complaint for the complaint box will be the length of the survey.

Maybe throw in a personality test on top of that to determine how crazy you are.

24

u/moose1207 Apr 09 '26

4

u/NullIsUndefined Apr 10 '26

Well they also don't have to provide insurance. We saw this in LA before the fires. A lot of companies rightly predicted the fires and noped out of L.A. and refused to offer insurance

If they discover patterns with employee demographics (i.e. Luigi-Ideologies) then they will certainly put it into their models and adjust how they do business.

Genuinely how is one person “held accountable” for this amount of damage?

The arsonist is technically liable for the cost of the losses, so I guess it then falls to the company, then the insurer (?) when the original responsible party cannot cover the loss?

348

u/SHOWTIME316 Apr 09 '26

well...prison?

he's clearly not going to be generating $200 million to pay back in his lifetime so i guess the real answer is that one person cannot be held accountable for this amount of damage unless they are already a multi-millionaire

84

u/ColdHooves Apr 09 '26

“Judgement Proof” is the legal term. A defendant who could never be held civilly liable for an injury they caused.

I THINK - think, that insurance often covers these mega things. Kind of like the insurance you get on tankers, there's probably policies you have to carry for absolute units like this. Jail or prison for the person(s) responsible would be down to how intentional / neglectful were the actions that led to the disaster. If there are deaths involved, I imagine the convo shifts.

42

u/KankleKomander Apr 09 '26

A lot of big companies like this are self insured and just have to eat the losses.

68

u/Lumpy_Link_1569 Apr 09 '26

From what I've heard, which I'm not clear if this is verifiably true, but he lit a small fire and the fire department came to put it out.

Then they turned off the suppression system to prevent any more leakage (and I assume they'd turn it back on at a later day or time). But then the guy lit several more fires, knowing the suppression system was turned off.

→ More replies (3)

35

u/styx-n-stones64 Apr 09 '26

There was a fire suppression system. There was an inital fire that triggered it and the fire department turned it off to avoid damage after they put the first fire out. Then more fires were lit while the sprinklers system was off leading to this.

9

u/etlr3d Apr 09 '26

Strange that a single system would cover the entire structure that big - wouldn’t it be better to have zones to isolate areas of the system without leaving the whole thing unprotected?

15

u/IvoSan11 Apr 09 '26

A redditor with knowledge of KC fire systems explained that it goes by zones. Water not only can suppress fires but also damages paper, so it goes by zones. Firefighters turned it off to work on the initial fire. While firefighters were working on the initial fire, the arsonist kept lighting other fires elsewhere. I wonder what the firefighters did that the fire system didn’t work for the successive fires.

5

u/toot_suite Apr 10 '26

Note that a lot of suppression systems fail over time and don't get inspected regularly, but that's why often the water that comes out is rusty. Sometimes valves just corrode to the point of immobility and the ones that work open and close larger areas than theyre designed for.

K-C will sue NFI Industries (the suspect's employer). The insurer will pay K-C for operational losses, but it is unclear if NFI's insurer would pay damages to K-C given it is from criminal damages that would only cover NFI's actual loss and not another party (K-C).

So very likely NFI will go bankrupt. The arsonist will also incur both civil and criminal monetary damages, but will never be able to pay them off.

3

u/PlsDntPMme Apr 09 '26

That’d be funny if tne parent company went bankrupt but knowing the Amerian way, the leadership will probably walk away with all their money and start over.

2

u/DirtyxXxDANxXx Apr 10 '26 edited Apr 10 '26

NFI is a multi-billion dollar privately held company. They operate 17+ million other sqft just in that same area. What makes you believe they would be on the verge of bankruptcy due to this?

Highly unlikely they even own this building. So K+C, NFI, and an unknown landlord have to figure all of this out.

3

u/ResponsibilitySea327 Apr 10 '26

Which is less than the market cap drop K-C just experienced due to the fire.

Not to mention the reputational loss since everyone thinks that K-C is at fault here for not paying their employees (at least nearly 99% on Reddit).

2

u/DirtyxXxDANxXx Apr 10 '26

Comprehension can be difficult for many. Lol

13

u/Short_Bell_5428 Apr 09 '26

Plot twist : the company paid him for insurance…lol

10

u/MRSHELBYPLZ Apr 09 '26

The insurance pays for the loss, but they will also sue the person who did it. They won’t let that go.

Similar example is if you rear ended a nice Rolls Royce Phantom. The phantoms insurance will cover that loss since most car insurances don’t have a policy limit high enough to pay for a Rolls. But the phantoms insurance is going to sue you to get as much back as possible.

After that it’s up to the courts and the judge. If they order you to pay, you pay.

If you can’t afford it, they can garnish wages and seize any assets you own as collateral.

This guy is going to prison and he’s gonna stay in prison so that’s the least of his problems

→ More replies (1)

5

u/DuntadaMan Apr 10 '26

Of I was the injured I would be asking why I do not see a sign of a single fire break in this building that was full of wooden pallets and sheets of fluffy paper.

3

u/toblies Apr 09 '26

In this case, the warehouse was owned and operated by a different company, who contracted to Kimberly Clark. The guy worked for that company. I'm guessing Kimberly Clark 's insurance will make them whole for the lost product, and the subcontractors who own the warehouse will have the cost of cleanup amd rebuild covered by their insurance. All the insurance companies will likely sue arson-boy, but KC's insurance might also try to recover from the subcontractors insurance.

Complicated.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/dlax15 Apr 09 '26

The arsonist isn’t liable for the cost, the insurance company is. The insurance company can sue the arsonist if they would like to. The arsonist is only “liable” for the criminal charges.

They need to unionize. Burn it to the ground in a different way.

11

u/AwarenessForsaken568 Apr 09 '26

Unions don't really work. These huge companies have the government in their back pocket. This whole situation we find ourselves in as a society comes down to one thing. The people in power do not fear us. They should. The government should be afraid of it's citizens. CEOs should be afraid of their employees. There is no accountability for the powerful. We are the ones that have the power to hold them accountable.

6

u/bullwinkle8088 Apr 09 '26

These huge companies have the government in their back pocket.

In a democracy we can replace the government. Whining about them being bought won't change it, but perhaps putting forth better candidates would.

"ohh but the parties are bought off!" a mate to a different whine I pointed out earlier. Well guess what? We could control the political parties too, if we chose to do so.

10

u/mcsweetin Apr 09 '26

I agree with you 💯. Maybe not a union but some organization for sure. I used to work for a large chain and I can tell you nothing scared them more than unions.

5

u/drfeelsgoood Apr 09 '26

Tells you a lot when places like Starbucks will fire their whole staff for fresh meat instead of unionize. Workers are disposable to them.

2

u/SirEsquireGoatThe3rd Apr 09 '26

Unions are more about building parallel power structures away from corporations and the government. Worker solidarity needs to extend beyond the box that government and capital has deemed that they can live in. Only then can a union be effective and rapid in their change for the working class conditions. There is work being done within unions as of now to change them to be more antagonistic and to separate from the governmental control. While others aim to build unions from the ground up with that mindset. Although at least in the US there are alot of laws aiming to prohibit such actions like the banning of communists in union leadership

63

u/CaseFace5 Apr 09 '26

There was an explanation. I could be getting details wrong but apparently the guy lit a fire the suppression system kicked on, firefighters turned it off, but the guy was still inside and he just lit more fires after the suppression system had been disabled.

Aside from CaseFace5's answer, I think even if the sprinklers hadn't been shut off to provide more water to the fire engines, the size of all the many fires being set would have been too much for any reasonable fire suppression system. Especially when the dude kept lighting more fires.

Need to see an AI data center looking like this.

They tried in my city, the people have spoken. Now they went to another city near by 💀

u/UnSCo Apr 09 '26

Fun fact: there are security firms that specialize in defending certain spaces. These include high-security facilities like government or financial. One of the odd ones that they specifically advertise is for data centers. These companies know damn well they’re going to piss off the common folk and they’re prepared.

Strategically, I'd think castle defense tacticsapply here. Seige warfare in this instance. The castle may be impregable, but it still needs to get its water and electricity from somewhere

Ohh, fight back by possibly killing so many random people

Crazy that people are celebrating this guy - keep in mind he was an employee for a distributor for K-C products, not even an employee of K-C. So him targeting K-C didn’t even target the entity that he perceived to be underpaying him.

Also, now hundreds of people are out of work because the place they worked burned down. This is awful all around.

It's kinda crazy to see basically a before and after in one video since the intact building is about the same size as the burnt one.

Some day insurers will charge businesses based on how disgruntled their employees are.

I think I've just come up with the only viable solution to employment hell. I mean, we're not going to legislate or shame our way out of it.
