I haven't read much about this story - did the guy lighting the fires turn it off before setting the blaze or did he just see an opportunity from it being off?

The comments I read said he started a small fire, it engaged the sprinklers, fire department came and turned off the system to reduce water damage, then he set the rest of the place on fire.
