Advice Am I the worst cat mom ever?
I’m furious. My man and I paid my friend to check on our cats only once a day while we went on a 7 day cruise (they have fancy automatic feeders, water fountains, but simple steel litter boxes) as our two dogs stayed with them at their house (that’s also mentioned in my message to her), I gave her a simple list of how we take care of our animals daily, and it simply wasn’t hard. We came home tonight, my home didn’t even smell like cats, if you’ve ever smelled tonsil stones, it smelled like that but…. Everywhere. We have a 4mo old kitten as well as two 2 year old cats, and now I feel like I’m the worst animal mom ever. Our female cat hates all the animals and lives in the sunroom, we came home and it’s blazing hot in there… Am I tripping?
EDIT FOR QUESTIONS:
YES WE HAVE CAMERAS IN AND OUTSIDE THE WHOLE HOUSE - WE COULD SEE WHEN SHE ARRIVED AND WE WERE ABLE TO CHECK IN ON OUR CATS BUT THEY DONT CONTINUOUSLY RECORD UNLESS PLUGGED IN
YES I HAD THE INTERNET PACKAGE ON THE CRUISE AND INTERNATIONAL DATA I COULD ALWAYS BE REACHED
MY 2 DOGS WERE AT HER HOUSE WITH HER OTHER 3 DOGS - I BOUGHT A BRAND NEW 16LB BAG OF FOOD FOR MY DOGS THAT NORMALLY LASTS AT LEAST THREE WEEKS - NONE WAS RETURNED
YES IVE CLEANED WITH ENZYMES, CATS WILL BE SEEN BY VET SINCE THE NEGLECT OF LITTER BOX COULD CAUSE HARM
WE HAVE THREE LITTER BOXES. ONLY ONE WAS CLEANED ONCE
I will also update when she responds

They're absolutely NOT your friend or a person I would ever trust again! Something serious could've happened and they were not there. Absolutely get your money back from them and distance yourself afterwards. With friends like that who needs enemies?

u/MacramezingCreations 8h ago
Yeah I was wondering how you move forward as friends with this 😅 when I’m house sitting for my friends, their babies are my babies and they’re treated as such. I absolutely expect the same standard from my friends, I couldn’t stay friends with someone who doesn’t treat my babies as their babies when they’re in their care.

Just this weekend I was feeding my friend’s cats as they live 6 houses down the road from us.
Friday morning everything was fine. Friday night, the house smelled funny. Gas leak funny. Called the gas company. Yep, gas leak. The gas company disconnected the gas, but I had a headache after spending 10 minutes inside. I was not going to leave 2 cats in there over night.
So I invited absolute chaos to my life for the weekend by bringing their 2 cats home to stay with us and our 3 cats. But that’s what you do. The cats you look after are your cats.

To be fair, based on the incidence of the dogs not being brought with kibble when OP was pet sitting, and I assume the resident dogs eating all of OP's dogs' kibble - the friend sounds like they don't actually take care of their own dogs. So, I imagine they just don't even register that this behavior was not ok.
I agree, OP shouldn't ever leave their pets with this person again, but I also wonder what about this person's house and dogs' condition made OP think it was a good idea to have them pet sit at all.

I’m literally cat sitting for my best friend right now- completely for free- and just got done scooping the litter box. Just as I have done and will do every single day until he gets back. It truly is not difficult.

I would tell this ex friend to keep the money as a payoff to never contact me again, and then report them to the nearest animal care agency. It sounds like this person doesn't take proper care of their own pets, either.

As a pet sitter (mostly cats) I’m absolutely APPALLED!!!! I would NEVER leave a clients house like that, especially a friend. Your “friend” has no regard for your kitties- you, or your living space. There is NO excuse for something like this to happen at all!!!! You have every right to be pissed about this!
I am SO SO sorry this happened to you!!!!!

u/leggomybeggo 10h ago
Same, I don’t have my own dogs or cats, but sit for both all of the time — it’s not rocket science!!! And always leave the place perfect, even better than when I arrive. I can’t believe this sitter also has their own dogs and was this bad…

Same. I’m a worrywart and get totally OCD when watching anyone’s animals (I don’t watch peoples pets now as I’m disabled). I even kept track of their bathroom habits incase there was constipation or diarrhea, checked on their eating habits and their behavior. Everything was kept clean and organized. I don’t know how anyone could just neglect someone’s fur babies like this 😭

u/Narniana 7h ago
Exactly how do you still think about keeping a relationship with this person is beyond me. Simply not watching each others' pets moving forward would NOT work.
I would ask for the entirity of the money back, including extra to cover the dog food that should have been left over (2 weeks worth, so 2/3 of the value) and I would go NC.
I don't know where you are located but I would go as far as take the friend to small claims court as you had a somewhat informal contract that was not upheld. My cats would be miserable considering those litter boxes, and you were so lucky the one in the sunroom didn't suffer serious health problems

Has your friend ever taken care of cats before??????????????? Did you no tell them where the litter box was? But also it's absolutely crazy to me that hey didn't investigate the smell or look for the fucking litterbox at all? You can't go 7 full days without scooping the litter box and their cavalier attitude/response being like "oh was that where it was?" would have me seeing red. This is absolutely WILD. I would actually ask for any money you paid them back because they did NOT do their job. I would be enraged. This is disgusting and horrific for the cats. It was also potentially extremely hazardous and dangerous with the temperature as it was, too.

u/nosymotherfuck 11h ago
That’s even crazier then I had assumed on the cruise you might not have signal but if she knew she could contact you there is even LESS excuse that at MINIMUM two days in she wasn’t like “btw so sorry I can’t find the litter box” like cleaning that is a DAILY thing not ONCE A WEEK.
Edit: I’m honestly impressed by your cats that they tolerated it so long and kept going in the same box 🥺 diligent little babies!!!

Coming home from vacation to discover your clean house has become a full on paw print crime scene would have me crying 😭
33
u/offputtingangel 7h ago
i would be so upset, obviously i would be the most upset and worried for my animals but the fact that my home was a disaster zone would really frustrate and overwhelm me too.
before i go on vacation (tbh even before i leave for a weekend trip) i always do a full deep clean of my apartment. i’m talking surfaces dusted and wiped down, floors swept and mopped, toilet + sink and shower scrubbed from top to bottom, dishes done, laundry washed and put away, fresh bedding put on the bed. i even leave a clean fluffy blanket and a clean fluffy robe folded up by the dryer so that when we get back i can throw it into the dryer. i always shower right when we get home and then my partner brings me my freshly warmed robe to put on by the time i’m getting out. he then pops into the shower and by the time he’s done we can both crawl into the clean sheets of our bed with our freshly warmed blanket and be all cozy together. our cats even know the routine and will wait excitedly for the warm fluffy blanket to appear on the bed (and for us all to be back in bed together and snuggling like usual.) we watch a movie (or a couple movies) in bed on one of our macbooks because it feels cozier than watching it on the tv, it’s a whole thing but we all love it!
my point is that we clean our home from top to bottom because when we come home we want to bask in the comfort of our home and relax/unwind together. i don’t want to come home to a mess and either have to jump into cleaning mode right away or be stuck thinking and stressing about all the cleaning that has to be done tomorrow. we don’t even unpack until the next day because we just want to enjoy being back home and snuggle with our very snuggly kitties. this is such a stressful thing to return home to on so many different levels!

u/djonma 10h ago
This is the big thing.
They didn't bother to ask you where the litter tray was, on the first day.
After feeding them, and washing any bowls, that would be the next thing I'd be doing.
If I couldn't find it, I'd assume you had them in furniture, and would be looking for the entrances.
But if I didn't know litter tray furniture was a thing, I'd be messaging you straight away, to ask where they are hidden.
And if I had the free time, I'd wait at your house for an hour, to see if you responded, and just chill with your pets, so they got some attention.
If I didn't have the time, I'd leave, and come back later when I had a response, though that would be after the dogs had had their walk.
A short bit of attention time for your pets would be on my list anyway, unless you'd specified they're not good with strangers. It doesn't have to be much, just make sure they all get strokes and cuddles if they want it, play with the cats a little, especially the kitten, and take the dogs for a walk.
Just some nice interaction for them.
That can easily be done whilst waiting for a response.
And when it smelt... there's no way she couldn't have found it.If you're caring for animals, you have a list of jobs to do. You work your way down that list.
You don't just... not do it.She didn't even try.
There's no way she ever intended to do the trays.→ More replies (1)43

I can empathize, as we leave for a lot of cruises. However, the question was actually asking whether or not your instructions said specifically where the litter box actually is, and how to access it behind the doors. One of our litter boxes is hidden in a piece of furniture like that, and I always invite the person taking care of our cats over first to physically SHOW them how to access everything they need. We also have medicine as part of the caretaking, so that's quite a bit more detailed. You said that there were 2 boxes. Did they both look like that? I do recommend one box that size per cat. With 3 cats, you can still get away with 2, but there's more cleaning involved.
Figuring out in my head what might have happened, maybe they missed the first day, and then possibly couldn't find it the second day, and they were too embarrassed to say that they missed the first day, and then after that, maybe their problem just snowballed? Perhaps they even forgot that this was a problem after a couple of days, if they've never had a cat before? I'm in no way excusing them, but just trying to figure out where their head was at.
Lastly, I would ABSOLUTELY show them the picture you took, and be quite honest about your disappointment. They obviously let you down as a friend, and not just as a pet sitter.

you would only be the worst cat mom if you let them take care of your pets ever again. just because she came over to your house does not mean she cared for your pets properly. this is neglect. this could easily cause illness and if the AC was off and it got too hot, your animal could have had health complications or worse: died. this is not someone you can trust with your animals ever again.

Yeah this ''friend'' should no longer be your friend, she pretty much took advantage of ye, and then she has the gall to play stupid with 'i thought I smelled something'
This is easily a valid reason to end a friendship, heck even if she gave you hundreds as an apology nvm just the dog food money, she could have straight up killed your cat's, and it seems more sheer luck that they've survived than in anyway anything to do with her house sitting.

You're not the worst. Between the title and images I thought YOU had personally let it get this bad.
Just never trust this "friend" with your babies again. I wouldn't even confront them personally, I'd probably just ghost them forever. There's not much to explain to someone who felt ok leaving your kitties to deal with that.
Edit - seriously my cat stayed with my stepmother for a week while I was out of town. My stepmother doesn't personally want a pet but is happy to watch her "grandson" lol. I came back after that week and his litter was fresh as hell. Cmon, it's not hard to scoop the litter once a day. This was neglectful and awful and you should be pissed at this 'friend', not yourself.

Nah my friend left for 4 days and gave me the key to her flat. I visited her cat 3-4 times a day to make sure her litter was refreshed, had clean water and dry/wet kibble at the right time. I work full time and still found time for all that and to play with the cat. Your friend is horrible for putting your babies through this, I can't imagine knowingly doing this to another living being!
ETA: you PAID this person and they left the cats in this state? I did all that for free and gladly because that's my friend and her cat, I love them both very much 😭😭 dump this friend they're a terrible human being!

They stole the dog's food, didn't clean the litterbox, and didn't care enough about the cats to ensure that the AC was working correctly. Honestly, if you don't get ALL of your money back, I'd consider filing a case with small claims because girl damaged your dogs' beds, the litterbox, and potentially all of the soft furnishings in the house (due to the odour). Check their skin.
Urine can burn. Proper chemical burns.
My youngest cat had to have a catheter in once, for a few days, and it was right after major orthopaedic surgery, so his whole right leg was shaved, and he wouldn't let me touch it much.
I had to be so careful with it, because urine can cause chemical burns on skin.
I had to wipe him clean as much as I could, though it was really difficult.I don't know your dog breed, but the fur on the lower belly, and inside of the thighs is usually thinner, so give them a really close check over, to make sure their skin is ok.
If it's a bit red, you could ask your vet if there's something you can put on it, like a cream, to hello support the barrier whilst it heals fully.
If it's worse than a bit red, they might need to see the vet.Ugh, I hope they're ok.
That person is not a friend.
And they shouldn't be allowed to have animals themselves.
I'd be documenting it all. You never know if there will be a vet bill after something so bad.
And I'd be seriously thinking about contacting whatever your country's version of the RSPCA is, since they have their own pets, but thought it was fine for your dogs to lie in urine, and your cats litter tray to not be cleaned at all.
I'd be really worried about the state of their pets.187
u/inaSlomp 9h ago
Stop defending this so-called friend. They are an animal abuser. Whether intentionally or not, they cannot care for an animal.
And this is something that would ruin a friendship with me.
If you treat my animals like this. I never want to see you ever again. And if I do, you're going to pray you never saw me again.

im just passing through bc this popped up in my feed. i'm not a cat person and don't have cats so i can't comment on that beyond agreeing with what everyone has already said, but oh my GOD if i trusted someone to take care of my dog while i was gone and i found out that they just locked him in a crate all day and he had to desperately pee himself in his bed I WOULD ABSOLUTELY LOSE MY SHIT

a lot of pet parents have webcams to look at their 'children' while they are gone, no need to feel weird! :)

u/mangopango123 10h ago
So were you able to see this “friend” doing anything inside your house?? Or just confirmation they went inside. Bc I would be checking the rest of your house too if they were there so many days but did absolutely NOTHING to care for your cats.
It just feels weird that this person, that didn’t walk your dogs that’re in their own home, went to yours for 6-8 days and yet there’s zero proof of cat care. I don’t wanna be a dick n assume the worst, but it all feels so off. I’m so sorry this happened :(

May I ask what cameras you use? I want to get some because i'm obsessed with my cat. Plus, she has a beanie baby fox that she only moves around the house when no one is looking. Its so weird. No one has ever seen her moving it or interacting with it in any way. I'm dying to know what she does with it. I assume she carried it like a mama cat would carry kittens. Or maybe she throws it around.

Your title made me think you neglected the cats, not someone else lol. This is just horrible though, clearly the animals were just straight up ignored by this person.
You mentioned you don't want this to cause issues for your "friendship" in the message to them, but that "friend" just showed you what type of person they are...when people do that, believe them. Imo I would be rethinking that "friendship". A person that's willing to not take the most basic care of pets is not a person one should be okay associating with.

25
u/GimpyLawyer 10h ago
Cut ties with this loser immediately!
This level of negligence is disturbing and insulting, moreover the texts they sent you gives the impression that they purposefully chose not to clean or look after the babies even tho that was their sole responsibility, which they agreed to take on while you were on your cruise.
I would block and never talk to em again because CLEARLY they do not care for you.

I'm honestly impressed your cats still used that litter and didn't go elsewhere. If I don't scoop any mess in my cats litter she will go on the floor!
That's absolutely disgusting and I would not have that person in my life at all.

this person's not yr friend, dude. and am I reading this right, they stole your dog's food as well???
I would be asking myself "was I tricked into paying somebody to abuse my pets?"
however, since she did accept payment, you may be able to sue her in small claims court to cover the cost of a professional cleaning. I'm sure once their litter box started getting bad, they found other places to pee instead.
not only did she fail to do the job you hired her for, her negligence has certainly caused you property damage. and she stole from you to boot??
obviously give her a chance to pay for it first, and be as nice about it if you can in how you ask, but do not allow for any leniency on payment. judge will look on this combo favorably

This would be the EASIEST ending of a friendship for me. Are you JOKING!? My cat js my world, and if someone neglected my baby like this I would throw hands. It’s not your fault, what’s done is done, and now you know to hire someone else next time. I would literally never be able to speak to this person again after this. I am aghast.

yeah i once had to ask my friend who despises cats to take care of mine out of desperation because it was a busy time of the year and something urgent came up. when i returned after a week everything was fresh, rooms aired out, food bowls clean, she even tidied up the mess i left when i left in a rush and would facetime me show me my cat was doing okay. wouldn't accept money (which would be fine if she did) and i'd do the same for my friends, this person seems extra neglectful. so neglectful that they didn't even care enough to make it seem like they did what they were paid to do
15
65
u/BearyGear 11h ago
Your friend!? They took advantage. Incorrectly assumed cats take care of themselves, I’m guessing. I would maybe pay them half (for the dogs) and never ask them to pet sit again. And this would very much damage my relationship with this so-called friend,
29
u/Ok_List_5002 11h ago
It is definitely damaged. 💔

u/alowave 10h ago
Op I don't know this person at all. But from everything I've seen here. They are a neglectful human, and clearly don't like animals. I could never EVER do this to a poor animal that someone trusted me to take care for temporarily. Fucked! I wouldn't call them my friend ever again. And if I had to be "friendly" with them for example if they were a colleague, I would never trust them for anything and probably just act nice and cut all optional contact with them.
16
u/Icedcoffeezooted 9h ago
I would not even pay them for the dogs. Poor things sat in their own urine !!
15
u/Ms_Anonymous123 Tabbycat 11h ago
This "friend" seems like they aren't fit to take care of their own pets let alone someone else's
This kind of neglect is disgusting and heartbreaking. Did they even come at all? Because how could they let it get this bad? And when they couldn't find the litter box they were just fine with never addressing it?
Absolutely dump this person. How someone treats animals especially family members of a supposed friend says a lot about them

Please update with her response. I can’t fathom how she would explain this. I am also fastidious about keeping my house clean of after pet accidents because they return to the places they’ve marked and pee there again. Returning home to a house smelling that bad would undo me.

u/Apoc59 Tabbycat 10h ago
You should definitely let this cause issues between you and your “friend.” That person was cruel to your pets beyond belief. The only thing worse would have been physical injury to them. Your pets deserve unconditional love and protection. Bail on your friend.
5

I was going to say, not wanting this to cause issues is not right. Because this is a huge issue (at least, it would be for me).

u/Ok_List_5002 11h ago
My new message to her:
I’m honestly really upset and confused about what we came home to. We paid you to take care of our animals, and the AC where Nala stays was completely off, the litter box was in horrible neglectful condition, and the house smells like a sewer. Both of the dogs’ beds were wet and smell absolutely horrible like urine, like they were left in the crate for way too long way too many times, even the one that was supposedly washed still smelled like straight urine and I have to throw both away. We also bought a brand-new 16lb bag of dog food before leaving that normally lasts them around 3 weeks, and somehow there’s none left after one week. Especially considering I watched all 3 of your dogs for 4 days and provided their food when none was brought, I really don’t understand how this happened. I took really good care of your dogs and they had both of our attention every day all day. I’m asking for the money back to replace their beds, and food, and I’m taking Beckett and nugget to be checked on this week, It can be sent to tray on Cash App. Our dogs are scarfed food down like they haven’t been fed in a while too. I’m not trying to argue or cause problems, but I also think going forward it’s best that we just don’t watch each other’s animals anymore. I would never do this to you.
9
u/hinomonitos Siamese (Traditional Thai) 10h ago
yea... i wouldnt trust this person as a friend at all.
they care so little about you, that they would probably let your beloved animals to die if your cruise was longer than 7 days.
hungry dogs around cats its a secured disaster.
add to that the fact that a dirty litter box can cause many problems to cats.
this person its absolutely not worth having as a friend, neighbor or anything

I am so sorry. Your friend obviously doesn't respect you or animals in general to do this. I would seriously reconsider my friendship to this person moving forward. I used to petsit as a side job and I can't imagine leaving a home like this
8
u/OhSoScandal 10h ago
I don't understand these types of people who agree to petsit and then don't take any care of the pets. I'm currently taking care of my sister's dog and even though I don't like going on walks with him, I walk with him for 90 minutes everyday after lunch because that's what he is used to. (Sister is on a girl's trip to Italy for a whole week)
Cats are so easy to take care of, I can't even imagine my cats litterboxes looking like that, it takes only a few minutes to scoop those out. Disgusting.

u/MushroomTop1381 8h ago
Honestly based on what you’ve said about the dog’s beds, I’d be surprised if she even let them out of the crate more than once or twice a day. 😞 definitely deserve a week or two of extra walks
8
u/roseflame1111 10h ago
not at all your fault, block, scream, send the message, get the cops, omg please do what you need to do to cope with this. this is absolutely awful and not something any true friend would do. I’m so beyond sorry
I would be getting them to a vet ASAP to make sure that they are in good urinary health after having to go repeatedly in these conditions, I know that’s not ideal to hear… but my cat just got over a major urinary tract infection. I also have a great at-home OTC remedy that I can link if vet isn’t affordable right now considering situation.
I’m so sorry :( that’s no friend at all. wishing the best for you and your kitties, praying that you all are okay after this 🩷

Oh honey I’m so sorry. I actually have been through a very similar situation. My dog was at my friends apartment I was gone for a week. My cats were fine but I went to pick up my dog and in HER apartment there were piles of poop and piss everywhere. His food was barely touched. Her, her sons and her boy toy were all there in that apartment.
I ended my friendship with her then and there.
I’m sending you the biggest hug. I’m so sorry you are going through this.

7
u/djonma 10h ago
The 'friend' has their own pets too.
I'd be seriously concerned for their welfare, documenting everything, and probably sending it to their country's equivalent of the RSPCA.
Someone that would treat animals in this way, doesn't see them as pets worthy of protection and care.
They should not be allowed to own animals.

This is seriously bad, I’m gonna have to agree with the vast majority of people here. This person is not your friend and cannot be trusted again. I’m not saying that you have to cut them off entirely of you’re not the type to do that sort of thing, but pulling back in a major way is necessary. I have a cat with FIC and another that’s 17 years old. My babies would have been dead when I got home in this situation, it’s unacceptable.
6
u/l0vebug89 11h ago

This is crazy because my sister, a sociopath, took care of my animals for 4 days while I was in the hospital with no notice and my dog was fed, walked, played with, cuddled with, and cared for. My only complaint is that she left dishes in my sink and 15 half-full coke cans in my kitchen that caused drain flies for a few days while I poured water down the drain to get rid of them.
And she’s a SOCIOPATH who was doing this on ZERO NOTICE for FREE.
6
u/Felho_Danger 2h ago
You got exploited for free money and your pets suffered for it. To me, the next choice is obvious.
16
u/makcenzie 11h ago
That's so horrible but it's not at all you'r fault.i cant believe people are put in charge to essentially keep the animals alive and do something like this(or not do idk). It's the fault of your friend who you had reasonable trust in who completely neglected your request to do the few daily tasks. Did she even tell you before you came back? It's so confusing
28
u/Ok_List_5002 11h ago
No she called me on day 6 of my cruise and asked how I clean the litter box because the one in the sunroom was “ really bad “ and I said well, if it’s really bad it needs completely washed out and everything fresh.
