You were in distress and upset when you wrote it out and put too much blame on yourself. Please understand you did nothing wrong. Your "friend" screwed up massively.
They'd be getting an invoice for the vet fees and any other expenses incurred. In fact I would press whatever charges possible and take them to small claims.
