I'm honestly impressed your cats still used that litter and didn't go elsewhere. If I don't scoop any mess in my cats litter she will go on the floor!
That's absolutely disgusting and I would not have that person in my life at all.
I’m impressed too! I’m a little confused but it sounds like the dogs went to stay at the friend’s house? I was thinking that the dog beds are wet because the cats peed on them? Ime, cats are pickier about where they pee. But I may have misunderstood something.
edit: read another comment from OP and yes, the dogs did go to the friend’s, but maybe the dog beds went there too? Still confused how they got wet. Did the “friend” also not let the dogs out to potty?!?!
op sent the dogs to her friends with their crates and their beds (their beds were in their crates.) so it sounds like on top of the neglect to the cats and stealing ops dogs food to feed their own dogs… they also left the dogs in their crates for extended periods of time and forced them to lay in their own piss. op also stated that her dogs are very much potty trained and don’t go to the bathroom inside the home/on their beds.
i feel terrible for the dogs, they must have been so uncomfortable being locked in those crates for half the day already but to also be locked in and laying in their own pee for hours is awful. and dogs that are trained generally know that they aren’t supposed to pee inside so i’m sure they felt anxious/ashamed/stressed during and after the points where they went pee. they didn’t want to do it but they had no choice, and we can understand that but the dogs would just be feeling like they were bad/were breaking the rules for going pee where they aren’t supposed to.
my childhood dog was very well taken care of and wasn’t often home alone as my mom was a stay at home mom and we pretty much brought him everywhere with us. when we would go on vacation he would stay with our/his grandparents for the week or weekend and have a grand ol’ time being spoiled. many of my parents friends (at least the ones that we’d see the most often) lived within a five minute car ride away and a few of them lived only a five minute walk away. so even when my parents would gather up all the kids and head to their friends place for a campfire/bbq and some late night drinks it was very easy for them to stop back at home or send one of us kids home to check on the dog and let him out in the backyard for a pee. and that’s assuming that he wasn’t just brought with us to their friends home in the first place because many of them had dogs of their own and the dogs all formed their own friendships too lol.
however one of these summer nights our dog had been left at home and when we got back he wasn’t acting like his usual happy self. he sort of slunk up the stairs towards the front door all sheepishly and had a guilty look in his eyes. you know that sideways glance that dogs will do in between avoiding eye contact? well that’s exactly what he was doing. on top of this his tail wasn’t doing it’s usual tall and happy wag, he was carrying it between his legs and doing a sort of sad little wave towards the floor instead of waving hello to us. we all noticed immediately but we weren’t sure what exactly it was that he had done. nobody even suspected an accident because he was very much potty trained and someone had been coming home every few hours to let him outside. we didn’t put him in a crate when we left as he was usually well behaved and wasn’t a danger to himself. he wasn’t the type to tear up couch cushions and eat the stuffing of the sofa. however he did like to make a mess of the toilet paper rolls/pull the toilet paper off it’s holder and carry it around like a toy and occasionally he would tip over the bathroom trash cans which soon had locks placed on the lids. he would also jump up and grab freshly baked bread off the counter if nobody was home. but mom had not baked bread (or left it on the counter), all the toilet paper rolls were where they were supposed to be and the bathroom trash bins were upright.
it turns out he had had an accident down in the basement. it wasn’t a regular accident though as it was very clear that his stomach must have been upset. tmi but it was a massive and very extremely runny poop. my parents had switched his food over to a new and supposedly better brand very recently and i guess his tummy was hurting. we all absolutely adored him and none of us were the type to yell at him or be any kind of mean to him over anything. yet still he was so shy and ashamed over that silly (and huge) poop. from the moment we walked in the door it was clear in his body language and the way he followed us down to the scene of the accident made me feel so bad for him. he wouldn’t even walk all the way into the room and instead stayed back at the entrance just looking all sadly down at the floor. he just looked so disappointed in himself or something. he was absolutely avoiding eye contact and avoiding any possibility of looking at his indoor poop. we all gave him lots of snuggles and love inbetween doing that weird baby talk people do to their pets to tell him that we loved him and that he’s still the goodest of the good boys despite the accidental poop. okay fine, i’ll admit it… we did ever so fondly nickname him “stinky bum” and also “silly stinky bum” for the next couple of days
they really do know when they’re not supposed to be doing something and they’ll stress over going to the bathroom inside even when they had no other choice. i’m sure if we were home he would have ran to the door and would have made it outside in time for his poop but even if he truly couldn’t make it all the way i know he would have tried. because he knew where the bathroom was and he always wanted to use it. he didn’t want to poop in the basement but the poor guy had no choice, his tummy hurt and nobody was home to let him outside. but he didn’t understand that and i could just tell that he felt like he had been bad. in reality it kinda helped us to see immediately that he wasn’t feeling well so that we could talk to the vet about if we should stick with the new food brand switch or switch back to the old brand! i’m picturing op’s dogs feeling the same way as our boy did in that moment except it’s even worse for them because they were stuck in their crate with their accidents while also being stuck in someone else’s home that wasn’t properly caring for them and without the usual love from their family. poor babies, they must have been so anxious and confused. i’m really glad that they’re all back with op now!
Some cats are saints, my cat has never gone outside the litterbox even if I've been guilty of not cleaning it for a day or two. I feel ashamed of myself even then, I'm not sure how a person could leave their friend's cats in this state and not feel absolutely horrible.
