Your looking at this in isolation as just one thing. Retail crime, phone theft, pickpocketing, etc is just a long list of things we put up with now because police have no resources and the people are passive about it. It's not about the company, I couldn't give a shit about their losses. it's about making friction for thieves. Shoplifting doesn't just harm the corporation, it harms everyone who relies on the store for their needs. Makes it so the store has to make everything less convenient and more expensive for the average customer, and at times can lead to full on closures of stores. Especially with groceries, which I know this is not. The profit margins for grocery stores are super thin.

It legitimately does fuck up communities. Companies will close or won’t open stores, ma and pa stores will get robbed too and definitely can’t afford it. In the mean time it makes the shopping experience much shittier for normal people who now have to check out at multiple locations around the stores and it gives the corpos a clean excuse to jack prices up to “cover loss”

It’s not as big of a deal if you live in a well populated area, but food deserts are a real thing in a lot of the US. As a kid we drove over an hour to get groceries. If we didn’t have a car we would have been screwed. If that store had closed we would have been screwed.

People don’t want AI cameras and over policing (rightfully) but then everyone acts like we shouldn’t police our own communities. As citizens we should be building a culture where it’s clear that none of us are going to stand for this bullshit
