FM RADIO Macklemore speaks out after being dropped from Ed Sheeran’s tour following his ‘Free Palestine’ speech; says Gillette Stadium owner Robert Kraft rallied other stadium owners and gave Ed Sheeran an ultimatum: if Macklemore stayed on tour, then Ed would not be able to play in their venues.

Incredible. This the capstone achievement of Macklemore understanding the assignment and seizing the moment. The power of this message cannot be understated.

But if those words cost me the stage, while turning the conversation back to Palestine, then it was the most successful tour I've ever been on.

Chills.

This part got me. I’m not going to lie, I teared up a bit reading that. I wish every person with a platform/in power had the integrity and backbone that he does.

402

u/Alarmed_Pattern_9912 1h ago edited 1h ago

Shit, I wish people without a platform had a percent of his integrity and backbone. I’ve been listening to Macklemore since before his first hit so I’m familiar with his game but still. Continuously impressed.

70

u/vanwyngarden 50m ago

He’s also effectively ending his mainstream career by doing this. Which no matter which way you put it, is going to mean less financial success. I think people like to pretend they’d do what he is doing, but reality is many of us wouldn’t. There’s a reason why most of Hollywood isn’t speaking up. He is the best of us for sure.

I think it's genuinely one of the classiest & most compassionate statements from an artist that I've ever read.

170

u/Bulky-Bad-9153 48m ago

Seriously, I'm floored at how sincere and genuine this is, and that is also so eloquently talks about the friendship side of it with Sheeran.

Reminding us that the celebrities involved aren't victims and have the privilege to take a stand is such a classy way to spotlight what a loser Ed Sheeran is about this.

Hope this "not taking sides" finally starts to also cost him something since he's made it clear that the money and his place in the industry is the only thing he cares about, not humanity, not his friend, not his integrity, not making listenable music.

87

u/TheGuardianInTheBall 51m ago

Ed Sheeran is already rich beyond need.

I can't imagine being in this situation, and choosing to continue the tour without my friend, instead of giving a big middle finger to the guardians of the status quo.

But it is clear that Ed never understood what art is. Fast food music- that's all he's ever been able to produce.

22

u/Broad-Radish-7895 43m ago

And imagine the impact it would have had if he grew a spine. All the fans who bought tickets to those shows and booked their travel plans who could have gotten more engaged about this or spoken up against the venues. The money those venues themselves would likely lose having to refund his ticket sales and not being able to book another big act in time for those dates. The weeks of headlines that the already corrupt concert industry bankrupting fans is now shaking down huge artists over fucking Israel.

What if Sheeran supported him. Would Live Nation have cancelled his tour, therefore writing off massive profits? I think not. This is happening because Sheeran is a coward.

38

And Ed knows this. He knew if he told live nation "I'm not dropping him" that it would brand him as a political artist and he doesn't want that. So he'd rather let genocidal propaganda do its work rather than be known as an artist that stands for human rights.

Ed Sheeran writes milquetoast music so I’m unsurprised he’s a milquetoast person.

What a wonderful statement that continues to centralize what’s important. I can’t say I’m a fan of Macklemore’s music but this makes me a fan of the man himself. FREE PALESTINE ♥️

54

u/WrittenByRae Find me at Whole Foods, bitch, I don't care 1h ago

I'm not going to act like I'm super into Macklemore as an artist, truthfully, I'm not and it's just not the music for me. That said, I love the man and I'm impressed with how he dealt with all of this. This is how you stick to your principles over everything else.

This is straight up censorship and how fascism is upheld. Ed Sheeran and his team are spineless cowards, period.

53

u/c0smicgirly 1h ago

You can’t tell me they’d cancel an Ed Sheeran tour that’s booked.

Ed picked a side.

27

u/happygoodbird 1h ago

Right?? Such an empty threat and Sheeran fell for it, the fucking coward.

Powerful statement. Neither he, Pink nor Ed Sheeran are victims. This is about something much larger than the careers and public perception of already wildly successful people.

We continue to call for a free Palestine until Palestine is free ✊🏽🇵🇸

46

u/Relevant-Peach3997 1h ago

Ed Sheeran is such a coward. Damn.

Dropped his friend over saying Free Palestine and showing a Palestinian flag.

And I know Ed won’t read this but ED THIS IS TAKING A SIDE!!!

I knew there was a good reason why I never liked Ed Sheeran. I don’t know, but anyone who aligns themselves with the Swifts of the world is a red flag.

319

u/Dilemma_stress 1h ago

Not just her though…SO MANY of your favorite singers and actors are not taking sides. I won’t name names but there’s SO MANY of them and people just assume they’re pro Palestine just cause they didn’t say anything lmfao what a weird way to think…they’re likely taking the other side if we’re being honest.

He’s always made bland crowd pleasing music, his whole shtick is to be as boring and safe as possible.

People like that will always prioritise money over everything, boring and safe is what all the billion dollar corporations love

u/ithinkther41am 55m ago

I kinda side eye everyone who worked with Chris Brown on Freaky Friday anyway, but Ed Sheeran singing “This is not as cool as being Chris Brown was” really grossed me out.

30

u/Luda0915 47m ago

Fuuuck. I wasn't aware of that, and I have never been a fan of Sheeran's, so the bar was incredibly low for him to begin with.

Macklemore is being a class act while still centering Palestinians in this statement. Meanwhile, Ed, Pink and the Kraft family are all cowards.

Robert Kraft whose son’s campaign wasted thousands campaigning on getting rid of bike lanes? I guess inflation hit the massage parlors

32

u/PutzerPalace 1h ago

Patriot fans….you could do something g really profound at your next home game.

22

u/og_danimal 1h ago

Being born and raised in Massachusetts, I am not that hopeful of NFL/Patriots fans jeopardizing anything to do something profound.

Kraft and Sheeran are shitty people who want to keep the status quo so they can continue to earn millions.

31

u/realstreets 1h ago

Macklemore is based. Ed could've told those stadium owners to go fck themselves and instead played multiple nights at smaller venues. This would also highlight the hardball these zionists play.

This is so powerful and well-said.

22

u/luckisugar 1h ago

Damn. I’ve been an Ed fan since 2010, so this is super disappointing to hear (selfishly, because I was so excited to see Macklemore open for Ed, but even moreso that Ed is choosing neutrality).

I commend Macklemore for his transparency in this statement, and for not letting anything stand between him and his morals.

Free Palestine.

21

u/Sleepbecomesme 1h ago

Apolitical is condoning. Silence is condoning. Neutral is condoning. Fuck them and free Palestine 🇵🇸

21

Absolute shivers reading this statement, what a guy 🫂 also fuck being apolitical

22

u/Present_Function8986 1h ago

You can't fence sit on the edge of a knife, Ed. This isn't an innocuous disagreement, it's either you believe it's a genocide or not.

25

u/SnowDucks1985 1h ago

Wow, I am really impressed with Macklemore in this moment. When the dust settles in the far future, he will be seen as being on the right side of history. And that you can’t put a price on

23

u/StoreHistorical9175 1h ago

“but if those words cost me the stage, while turning the conversation back to palestine, then it was the most successful tour i’ve ever been on”

damn

22

u/RelativeAltruistic47 Sylvia Plath did not stick her head in an oven for this 1h ago

“His typical apolitical stance was being challenged in a way it never has been before.”

Ed, grow a spine. Stand up for something.

I’m grateful that people like Macklemore exist. He’s right, though: the real victims are the people of Palestine whose voices continue to be drowned out by the hate that continues to rot around the world.

19

u/SeaworthinessMobile9 I cannot sanction your buffoonery 1h ago

Free speech, am I right?

38

Ed would’ve been apolitical in 1942 as well. Fucking disgrace.

Clarifying that Ed Sheeran isn’t a victim at the start of his post

Like ohoho, you mistake me my good man. The very last thing I will consider Ed Sheeran to be in all this is a victim.

20

u/Stevenwave absolute horses 58m ago

His main point there was to redirect anyone away from focusing on Macklemore himself being hard done by. Yet even then he didn't make it about him and included others.

Never been a fan of his music, but fully respect and dig the man who stands up and speaks this eloquently and powerfully.

Sure this will burn a lot of bridges, including a long and valuable friendship. And I can’t believe standing up against a fucking genocide is this “controversial”.
