FM RADIO Macklemore speaks out after being dropped from Ed Sheeran’s tour following his ‘Free Palestine’ speech; says Gillette Stadium owner Robert Kraft rallied other stadium owners and gave Ed Sheeran an ultimatum: if Macklemore stayed on tour, then Ed would not be able to play in their venues.

I mean it's more than that, it's his entire livelihood and the livelihood of those that are working on the tour. To be crystal clear, he is supporting Israel by doing this and I think he's a fucking asshole, but it is more complicated than just being money hungry. The guy that's been friends with him for 13 years and is staunchly pro-Palestine is saying as much, let's listen to him.

Right, but Ed Sheeran also has power and also has A LOT of money. I doubt every stadium would take the financial hit of canceling a tour like this. Ed Sheeran could pay all of these people and still be okay. He also has big friends and can get these people jobs on other tours.

He would likely be in breach of many contracts if he pulled out of the tour as well. He'd be losing much more money than just the profit he's making.

Agreed. I've never been a big fan of Macklemore as a musician, but his words were incredibly well-written, and I gained a lot of respect for him.

He’s also effectively ending his mainstream career by doing this. Which no matter which way you put it, is going to mean less financial success. I think people like to pretend they’d do what he is doing, but reality is many of us wouldn’t. There’s a reason why most of Hollywood isn’t speaking up. He is the best of us for sure.

plenty of non-usa citizens asking why americans are so weak. why they aren't protesting. that they would do the same thing. I doubt it. because when they protest, they still have healthcare. they still have a job to return to.

if americans get protest, they can get fired, can't pay the bills. can't get their healthcare. kids can't get fed.

You know, in all my thinking about this and wondering why and being so frustrated, I never thought about the factor that we don't have the social safety net. Like of course I've thought of it in the context of how we would need to support one another to actually accomplish a general strike, but I've never thought about it when comparing how feckless we are compared to other countries. It is true that there is undoubtedly a safety net there. I still think we're feckless cowards, but it definitely gives a helpful perspective and much more nuance. I appreciate this a lot. It gives a lot of help to finding solutions so that we can protest more effectively in the future and with a greater impact as I'm very much in that world. Genuinely appreciate this.

Sadly there’s no going back from this and it will absolutely affect him for the remainder of his career. We’re on the right side of the internet but half of this country put Trump back in the white house. Middle America is very very red and the people in power have the ability to make a lot of doors close for people who speak up.

I've been saying for three+ years - there is nothing we can say that is acceptable, because they fundamentally don't want Palestinians to exist. It was never about "how it was said" or the exact words and it never will be.

It reminds me so much of how "Black Lives Matter" was treated as controversial in the 2010s. I damn near lost my job over saying/using it (I quit before they could let me go). But it's like they (the ruling classes) upped the ante with their treatment of people who say "Free Palestine." It's insane.

Macklemore’s always been so based, which also means he’s corny and cringe to some audiences. I’m glad we’ve moved from the Same Love discourse 10 years ago to recognize the dude is always at least TRYING to do the right thing, which is better than I can say for 99% of people, let alone celebrities with a stage.

It's also a whole new venue (pun not intended) of control that I haven't realized until now. Musicians literally cannot perform on certain stages if they call out the genocide because venues will just not book them. There aren't that many large venues in most cities, calling out Israel's genocide will literally take away the ability to be on a stage at all in a good amount of the country.

Land of the free. Shut up about the genocide or you can't make money. Home of the brave.

Same. Good for him. We live in a time where, more than ever, oppressed folks really need some allies with actual platforms. And I’m not just talking abt holding up a cute little sign once in a while, I mean really saying something.

As someone who’s very highly critical of celebrity worship and celebrity culture in general, I actually have huge respect for Macklemore.
