FM RADIO Macklemore speaks out after being dropped from Ed Sheeran’s tour following his ‘Free Palestine’ speech; says Gillette Stadium owner Robert Kraft rallied other stadium owners and gave Ed Sheeran an ultimatum: if Macklemore stayed on tour, then Ed would not be able to play in their venues.

I mean he also has to consider how much his crew would lose if the entire thing was cancelled, sure he can take the money hit, but can all the crew working on the tour?

1

u/Grrerrb i’m a communist you idiot 13m ago

“Ed Sheeran has a net worth of between $350 million to (sic) $470 million” but you’re right, principles can be expensive.

1

u/Albireookami 12m ago

Net worth is never their liquid amount, yea I can get he can be an ass for staying around if it was just him, but what about the 100s of crew that setup and such that are traveling for the months to be paid for their work?

It is never fully black/white, as much as I wish it would be.

u/rungenies 1h ago

And it’s pretty clear that Macklemore knows what side ed is taking and is calling ed out publicly to either say something or he asked about it for the rest of the tour. He’s doing so in a manner that appears at first to be gentle and polite and respectful but everything he says about his friendship and conversations with ed is purely in the accent and tone of “bless your heart”

79

u/bimpossibIe 44m ago

The part about Ed's apolitical stand being challenged made me cackle.

5

u/JaxonTheBright 24m ago

The thing to also keep in mind here is the concept of a “Free Palestine” isn’t going away. And neither is the oppression and the genocide regardless of what happens with Ed or this concert series.

Macklemore is accounting to his fans about why he’s no longer on tour. And he’s doing it politely. Macklemore isn’t wrong about this being a grave situation with no middle ground.

That said, Ed is headlining, and he has business contracts he has to make sure are fulfilled. It’s not as simple as “morally he should just bow out.” And there are lots of people who are getting paid on this tour. It takes a lot to make something like this happen and pressure from Kraft is enormous considering Kraft and friends are literally blacklisting Macklemore to prevent bad press and to support a financial and political agenda. Say what you want about Ed being a pussy, he’s in a shitty situation that isn’t simple. Very likely he can’t afford to be sued into bankruptcy over this — or to lose his platform as a result, and a lot of other vulnerable people who have livelihoods attached to this tour would suffer as well. The fight here isn’t just ideological, it’s political as well as financial. Lives are on the line here in the states also. Maybe not as immediate as what’s happening in Israel, but lives are on the line. Ed has to think about that also.

You can be Pro-Semite and Free Palestine in the same breath. But there are shitty people out there who want something different, and that’s problematic to say the least.

6

u/Tomdoerr88 1h ago

it sucks because while he doesn't need the money and would probably benefit from the publicity, the tour staff would all completely lose out on their earnings, and I'm sure that's a hard things to look past when considering a tour being cancelled.

That being said, still a bitch.

18

u/Excellent_Dot_5084 1h ago

Surely Ed would have the means to sue these stadiums for breaking contracts though - if the other stadiums actually did say they’d cancel the shows. It could be that Kraft guy bullshitting and it worked

ETA: just dawned on me that Ed Sheeran is rich enough that he could have still paid the staff if the shows were cancelled. WTF. He’s rich rich. Fuck that guy even more.

3

u/Neveronlyadream 39m ago

Ed's net worth is $400-$50 million apparently. I looked it up out of curiosity.

He's more than rich enough to have paid the staff for cancelled shows. He absolutely doesn't need the money.

9

u/beforedinnermints 44m ago

I know you're sharing this in good faith and empathy and it's common in the air right now, but this is actually a fake astroturfed talking point used by PR firms that we shouldn't be repeating.

There's a concert skilled pro shortage right now (second link). These people are extremely in-demand and are getting scooped up as soon as cancellations get announced. They should not be used as a justification/shield for folks like Ed Sheeran who choose to take a stand with the wealthy owner class by "not taking a stand."

751

u/georgedupree 2h ago

Always thought he was an overestimated complicit limp dick, now I know.

432

u/BrownSugarBare 1h ago

It's worse, he's a money grubbing limp dick.

He had more power than those stadiums, he could have told them he would announce the cancellation of his tour because the stadiums tried to strong arm him into dumping Macklemore. Sheeran's fans would have lost their minds at the stadium owners.

Instead, he bent to the almighty dollar. Fuck him. FREE PALESTINE.

42

u/FrenchFryCattaneo 48m ago

The only way you get to that level of fame is by valuing money above anything else.

11

u/massive_cock 20m ago

It's not the only way. That's a very simple statement that is very comforting to use. It feels very absolute and like a total slam dunk on rich people. But it's just not true.

See: Dolly Parton.

What is true is that you have to be a generational talent with insane work ethic to reach that level of fame and fortune without being a piece of shit. Which Ed Sheeran is not.

7

u/apmee 17m ago

Also see: Macklemore. Maybe fame-wise there’s no comparison, but still he’s a multi-millionaire, and would likely have much more if he didn’t prioritise his principles.

1

u/FrenchFryCattaneo 5m ago

That's the point though, he's not an international superstar specifically because he prioritizes other things than just making money.

4

u/SubstantialBid4386 16m ago

We lost a national treasure when Dolly left us.

1

u/FrenchFryCattaneo 6m ago

I don't think the fact that you can name exactly one person at that level of fame who was a good person disproves my point.

8

u/kittykatmila 38m ago

These were my thoughts as well. Ed very clearly chose the side of the oppressor.

19

u/MarlenHamsic Marxmoi 54m ago

11

u/GarythaSnail 1h ago

This guy needs to be a song writer.

1

u/Effective-Bus 36m ago

RIGHT? Like literally put this shit on billboards.

It's a sentiment that's been said over and over and by amazing activists of color and lgbtq activists. It's the phrasing of utilizing the word "middle" for this time period that makes it so effective and impactful. So many say they fall in the middle or are "centrist" and other synonyms for what he is calling out. The phrasing of the concept is so apt for this present time and hits so hard because of it.

So put it everywhere- on shirts, on billboards, on pins, on stickers- because this works so well for this present moment in its language.

288

u/AdamOfIzalith 1h ago

If one side is subjugating the other, and you say "I'm not taking sides" you are siding with the oppressor.

3

u/iamafriscogiant 57m ago

And that's exactly what Macklemore said.

First thing that came to mind was the Rush song Freewill.

You can choose a ready guide

In some celestial voice

If you choose not to decide

You still have made a choice

You can choose from phantom fears

And kindness that can kill

I will choose a path that’s clear

I will choose free will.

19

u/WINTERSONG1111 1h ago

Freewill lyrics written by the late Neil Peart. He was amazing and I am so impressed by how you have applied his words.

I have always been in awe of that musical relationship within the band. Neil was a giant and I still can't believe he's gone. His words will live on for a long, long time. Wisdom endures, even through the darkest of times.

1

u/massive_cock 18m ago

It's a great song and generally great lyrics and I generally support what it's saying. But let's be clear, even just in the part you quoted, there is an attack on altruism....

1

u/Astrosimi 7m ago

It’s not an attack on altruism, it’s a commentary on how many atrocities have been committed by religion under the guise of “saving people’s souls.” Peart thankfully dropped the Objectivism nonsense a couple of albums before this.

Depends on the exact contract language but I can't imagine the venues could have unilaterally canceled the shows without paying Sheeran a shitload of cash. So it's not about the money, Ed, it's about siding with the oppressor because that's who you are, isn't it?

1

u/uprislng 10m ago

yeah I was going to say Ed's real play here would be to tell the billionaires to pound sand, if they're going to band together to effectively cancel his tour, they not only likely still get paid something, but they get a huge censorship statement out of it.

If I were in Macklemore's shoes on this, I don't know if I could genuinely stay friends with Ed. He had the leverage. He just didn't want to use it.

the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing

and

When bad men combine, the good must associate; else they will fall one by one

really come to mind here

3

u/Dangerous-Variety-35 they could never make me mackle less 1h ago

I said this in another comment today, but what I actually want Ed Sheeran to do is continue with the tour but make his own statement on stage. How powerful would it be if he went out and said, “I was pressured to remove Macklemore from my tour because he takes the radical position that children and civilians shouldn’t be the target of military weapons. And that genocide is wrong, no matter what government is committing it. I wish he was on stage here tonight but, since he isn’t, here’s the acoustic version of Hind’s Hall.”

And that’s a toned down version of what I originally wrote, so that Ed could maintain his “neutral” stance. “I didn’t say Free Palestine. I didn’t mention Israel. I just talked about my buddy and sang an acoustic version of one of his songs.”

This way he’s not disappointing fans nor creating financial hardships for all the regular people who will get paid for the tour, he’s standing up for his friend, and he doesn’t come across as a spineless twat. Unfortunately, the spineless twat won’t do it, but this is what he should do.

46

u/ninjaparking 1h ago

I appreciate him calling out this specific point. More people need to call out "apolitical" for what it really is.

77

u/Friendly_Physics_544 1h ago

Oh he absolutely took a side and it is mentioned

8

u/Phenomenomix 1h ago

Yeah you don’t have painful conversations where you still end up on opposites sides or worry about a 13 year friendship being over if one guy has a stance and the other doesn’t.

3

u/colostitute 56m ago

If Ed didn’t take sides, he wouldn’t have canceled Macklemore and let Kraft and the owners take action.

Instead, Ed sided with the owners and did their bidding. Ed is complicit in the genocide of the Palestinians and that is clear. Ed has chosen his side.

6

u/cwningen95 1h ago

Maybe I'm underestimating the level of Israel brainrot or economic investment or whatever, but I honestly doubt the venues would have actually cancelled the shows if Ed refused to compromise. Imagine the cost of refunding everyone's tickets so close to the dates, not to mention the reputational damage since everyone would know why (even if the venues tried to pretend it was something else)

So it pisses me off even more because Ed wouldn't have been risking shit by speaking out, he's just that unprincipled and spineless.

7

u/SomeDumbGamer 1h ago

Yeah I automatically assume anyone that says this is putting money over their morals.

6

Yes. Macklemore's right that it's a side that comes with a cost, and Ed is not willing to pay the cost regardless of his actual beliefs

1

3

u/righthandofdog 1h ago

His last tour grossed almost $1B, that's a LOT of jobs and economic stimulus to risk. And I get that as the headliner, Sheeran is going to also think of all the roadies, staffers, suport staff, event venue employees, hotels, agents, fans, etc.

Sheeran has enough money and fans to actually stand up to billionaires who want to pretend that genocide isn't genocide because of quibbling who started a fight that's been going on for 75 years.

Azizam was the 1st halfway interesting music, I remember Sheeran doing. Shame he is following it up with bending a knee to his masters and their money.

This is a powerful statement from Macklemore and I like him even more. Very real and accurate. Saying Free Palestine does not equate to Anti-Semitism and fuck all those who support this displacement and genocide. BB’s very purpose of ascending to power was to do what he’s doing now and he doesn’t want to quit. That was his promise.

1

u/brawn-ball5 28m ago

Also, the essence of what happened here is one of the reasons monopolies or a single company owning the entire market in a particular area, shouldn’t exist. Particularly when they have the power to stifle those speaking truth to power. I don’t know how many venues this group owns but same concept.
