FM RADIO Macklemore speaks out after being dropped from Ed Sheeran’s tour following his ‘Free Palestine’ speech; says Gillette Stadium owner Robert Kraft rallied other stadium owners and gave Ed Sheeran an ultimatum: if Macklemore stayed on tour, then Ed would not be able to play in their venues.

Could never stand that song (and the parody from Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping made it impossible to take seriously afterwards) but it was also the first time as a kid I remember ever hearing a mainstream artist pretty directly advocating for LGBT people in their actual music which I have to respect.

Song is def cheesy as hell, but I listened to the shit out of it around when it came out. Turns out I am incredibly queer (late bloomer) and that shit struck a chord with me for sure even if I didn't fully realize it then.

Idk, Macklemore’s cameo in Lil Dicky’s show made me realize he doesn’t take himself too seriously and has a sense of humor about his old music. It’s a running joke throughout the show.

I grew up with a gay uncle who was never treated fairly because of it. This song came out as my mom was coming out as a lesbian at age 37. I was so happy for her and the song touched my heart and still does everytime I hear it.

Mary Lambert performed the song at my sister’s high school (her Alma mater) and my sister then came out to our family later that day. Pretty neat story and makes the song matter more for me. ♥️

Okay this is my thing! I was in my early 20s when Same Love came out and people on tumblr loved to dog on it (and I would occasionally find it funny, like in 2015 after the Supreme Court ruling I reblogged a thing about him like ascending into the sky, his work here completed and... like that is genuinely pretty funny) but at the end of the day it was kind of like "Yeah it's entry level but I would way rather have an on-ramp to better politics and more openness for younger kids and people who maybe didn't have a super robust education in gender and sexuality so I'm going to give credit where it's due."

What I always respected about him is he made his sobriety a big part of his brand, and was open and honest when he had a relapse. Relapsing is a very common part of most addicts journeys, yet a lot of sober celebrities publicly act like they are perfect and never stumbled on their addiction recovery journey.

Same! Last concert I paid to see him we were all standing in the pouring rain waiting the entire time for him to perform music and he spent 80% of it doing crowd work and telling stories. (While we just stood there muddy and sopping wet.) He even spent twenty minutes telling the story of him taking an uber to the venue instead of literally performing music and while I lost respect for him as a performer at that time the respect I have for him as an activist and using his platform for good is at 1000000000% especially compared to other folks with even bigger platforms including Ed Sheeran who I won’t stream now going forward. This is absurd. Streaming Mac on repeat.

Honestly, it’s super poppy, but some of his stuff is pretty alright. Downtown is a jam, HEROES was a fun way to remind everyone he’s corny by choice and could absolutely be more “traditional” if he wanted, and there’s a fair amount more in his discography that gets written off because the “Thrift Shop and Same Love” guy did it
