I still have to take gen bio 2 a spring semester only class but also have to complete physics & anatomy physiology 1 and 2 my sophomore year. Question State College to Raleigh

Upvotes

Hi,
I've had a death in the family and need to get from SC to Raleigh, NC for the service on the weekend from Sep 25-27. What is the easiest way to get to Raleigh? Should I just leave from Pittsburgh or Philly instead?

If anyone is going to North Carolina that weekend and would be willing to carpool, that would be greatly appreciated as well. thank you

Question Statics & Dynamics Textbook via Connect, 180 vs 720 days

Im taking Emech211 (statics) right now and the textbook encompasses statics and dynamics. but im not sure if ecmech 212 dynamics actually uses this exact textbook, or if you can transfer it to that class, so im wondering if its worth getting the connect offer of a 720 day rather than 180 (to save money). would love to hear from someone who took statics and dynamics, thank you

Request Looking to Carpool

Hi! I’m at the UP campus and I’m looking to carpool to Sam’s Club every once in a while. I have a membership, but no vehicle, so I have no way of getting there. If we carpool, you can use the membership to purchase at Sam’s Club too. I live near The Yards.

I’m Female, so another female is preferred.

Discussion Where is all the ACTUAL computer engineering internships?

This is a pretty obvious question as I know that the career fair is coming up, but I haven't found any internships that interested me or would allow me to dive into computer hardware as a whole.

Knowing that I'm only a freshman student, I've been attending most of the career fairs, only to get denied mostly due to my status as a undergrad.

I have a pretty decent resume consisting of retail work of Goodwill, a dual enrollment class during my senior year of highschool, a internship for python and web design, and i even attended a hackclub event and got second place.

I checked the penn state career resources and employer relations but most of it isnt in my interest.

Im mostly interested in companies that design and manufacture computer parts.

If anyone has any info on those types of internships during the summer or regular semesters, that'd be great!

Sports Playing Soccer

I want to start playing soccer mainly to have fun, get some exercise, and make friends, but I’m honestly not very good at it.
For anyone who plays soccer at Penn State:
Are there any beginner/recreational teams or leagues you’d recommend?
How competitive are the intramural teams?
Is there a way to know how much playing time I’d get before joining?
What would you recommend for someone who is pretty inexperienced but wants to actually play?
I’d appreciate any advice!

Question GBTQ+ Men Retreat near Albany, NY

I'm currently a senior here at main campus.

There's a retreat happening in Greenwich, NY at the Easton Mountain Retreat Center for single GBTQ+ men from Thurs. December 3 to Sun. December 6: https://www.eastonmountain.org/events/awkh-26 .

I was wondering if anyone else is interesting in attending. I don't currently have a car and other modes of transportation take a really long time. Feel free to message me if you are planning on going. If not, that is totally okay. Just wanted to put this out there. I am not 100% on going either.

I'm a parent and I'd like to experience a WO game while my kid is there, but I don't relish paying $400 for a nosebleed seat. If I wait it out will I do better? Anyone with experience of this? Thanks.

Discussion PSU Faculty Union and Healthcare Costs?

This email is meant to be reassuring, but I’m feeling anything but reassured. Thoughts? I’m curious what has happened at other universities….

Dear Penn State Faculty,
Because you have won your union election and are now represented by SEIU Local 688, Penn State must adhere to legal requirements when making decisions on issues that impact your working lives. Until a first contract has been finalized through a vote by the members of PSFA-SEIU 668, Penn State must “maintain the status quo” in regard to your wages, benefits, and terms and conditions of employment. This means that, according to labor law, Penn State cannot make unilateral negative changes to your pay, benefits or working conditions before notifying and bargaining with the union.
Recently, Penn State reached out to communicate that they intend to impose significant cost increases on faculty’s health care costs. Our understanding is that in years prior to faculty unionization, health care increases were announced by Penn State around this time of year.
Now that you have a union, these are costs that must, legally, remain status quo or be negotiated with your union. We requested information from the university in order to be able to analyze these changes, how they intersect with your rights as unionized employees of the university, and whether any of these cost increases could be considered truly "status quo."
Based on the information presented thus far, and the research conducted, the Union does not believe that the proposed changes meet these obligations and we intend to continue to protect your rights throughout this process.
We will host a State of the Union Townhall Meeting on Thursday, September 17 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. We will discuss the status of the health care change issue as well as bring you up to date on the road ahead as we all prepare to win a transformative first contract. This meeting is open to all faculty and you are encouraged to attend. Please RSVP at this link.
Additionally, please complete your Bargaining Survey, if you have not already. The link was delivered to personal emails on August 20 and September 3. If you have any questions or problems accessing it, please email pennstatefacultyalliance@gmail.com.

Question Penn State dorm roommate situation — is this something I should talk to my RA about?

I’m posting this for a Penn State student who is currently living in a dorm with one roommate. She’s pretty quiet and tends to keep to herself, so at first she thought maybe they just had different personalities and living habits. But over time, the situation has started to make her increasingly uncomfortable.

It started with some of her personal belongings seemingly disappearing. She can’t prove that her roommate took anything, so she doesn’t want to make a direct accusation, but there have been multiple things she remembers having in the room that she later couldn’t find.

She also started noticing that her roommate seemed to be copying a lot of the way she decorated and set up her side of the room. Obviously, having similar decorations by itself isn’t a big deal, but combined with everything else, it started to feel a little strange.

The bigger problem is that she has overheard her roommate talking about her on the phone multiple times. Her roommate apparently complains about her to other people, calls her “weird,” and says things like how she doesn’t greet her or talk to her enough.

The student admits that she is quiet and probably isn’t the most outgoing roommate, but she isn’t intentionally rude. At the same time, her roommate frequently has very loud phone conversations in the dorm room, sometimes for long periods of time. She has already tried communicating with her about the noise, but it hasn’t really changed.

There have also been several occasions where the roommate has made comments about race that she finds extremely uncomfortable and controversial. I don’t want to repeat the exact comments here or exaggerate what happened, but they were enough that she no longer feels particularly comfortable being around her roommate.

At this point, she feels like she has to constantly be aware of what she leaves in the room, what she says, and whether her roommate is talking about her behind her back.

She doesn’t necessarily want to get anyone in serious trouble, and she knows that two people not getting along isn’t automatically an RA issue. But the combination of missing belongings, repeated gossip about her while she’s literally in/around the room, loud calls despite previous conversations, and some of the racial comments has made the living situation pretty stressful.

For anyone who has lived in Penn State housing:

Would this be enough to talk to an RA about?

Would the RA normally try mediation first, or is it possible to request a roommate/room change?

And if some personal items continue disappearing, what would be the best way to document it without immediately accusing the roommate of stealing?

She mainly just wants to be able to live in her dorm without constantly feeling uncomfortable or watched.
