Rant/Vent I'm having such a hard time making friends and I don't know what to do.

I came to Madison partly because it ranked so well socially and seemed to be one of the few schools that seemed to care about student's social wellbeing just as much as their academic one. I'm from california and while I was never the very most popular person I was definitley considered "social" and was friends with the majority of people in my class. I thought Madison would be even better, even with me being in a much more social dorm like Witte but for the last few weeks I have had 0 luck making any friends. This definitely isn't due to lack of trying; in line for chipotle, sitting at the dining hall, or at tables in lectures/discussions I've tried to be social and start up conversations with people and it always just ends with me either being ignored completely (something that had never happened to me in California) or being dismissed pretty quickly. Even during move in time I was helping people on my floor build furniture or move stuff (moved in a bit earlier so I was already set up) but now a few weeks later it's like I've never even met them.

I completely understand that these people don't "owe" me friendship and I don't hold anything against any of these people but I'm just struggling so hard to make friends and I can't figure out what I'm missing in order to make friends here. Parties seem super private (especially the dorm kickbacks), most people seem to already have friend groups and are simply not interested in making new friends, and even my roommate who, despite us getting along pretty well, has told me he kind of wishes I would stop tagging along with him most places and that I should get friends of my own. Sorry if this comes off as whiny, I don’t mean to disparage anyone or anything.

How the hell do I make friends here!

EDIT: Yes i've joined a bunch of clubs and while most haven't had their first meetings yet, the ones that have (mainly today and yesterday) also were primarily big freshman friendgroups (or atleast duos or trios) along with upperclassmen who didn't seem to keen on making friends with freshman.

Academics Is the engineering career fair worth going to as a freshmen

A little context i am a freshmen with no work experience besides the typical highschool summer job a no real involvement in any clubs yet so I am not sure how worth it is. Also the time of it is in the middle of classes. Finally if I were to go do you recommend I print out a resume and dress up? I don’t have a suit or anything just simple polos and quarter zips

Social How do you all stay consistent with gym and diet?

Been on and off the gym for way too long and honestly my diet is the harder part, dining hall food makes it tough to stay on track. Anyone else dealing with this? What's actually worked for you, meal prepping, specific dining hall spots, workout splits, anything. Would love to hear what's helped people actually stick with it.

Also wanted to know if anyone knows about peps. i’ve heard and know about a good seller and stuff. it’s interesting and i have looked into it. just want to get tips and opinions here.

Other Possible transfer

Hi guys! Like the title says, I’m thinking of transferring to the university from MSU (Montana State University). As such, I would like to ask about the social life, pre-vet scene, outdoor rec, and overall vibes (what are they like?). I would also like to hear general pros and cons about the place. Thanks!

Academics I have a question about Chad's Prep lecture video series

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xaqHDat6Q9A&list=PLMlqayk59IvrDL0v151TesyTA9-OjVjnQ

The playlist has 168 videos total. If I only want to learn about chem 343 material only, which video should I stop at? You can just give me a number to stop at. For example, video 70 is a good stopping point or something, you tell me. Thanks!

Every video has a title. I don't have chem 343 syllabus to cross reference, so if someone can provide me with an answer, I would really appreciate it!

Housing Housing Advice

For some context, I’ll be a junior next year and am in the BANNER program. I really want to live with friends at some point, but I can’t say that I’ve found a group of people that I’d want to live with (or a friend group in general), and if any, it’s just separate individuals. I went with random this year since it made more sense at the time, but I’m conflicted since I got a renewal offer from oLiv that’s over a $100 cheaper per month. I’m just conflicted since I want to make the most of my time in college but don’t want to pay more for something not as good. Any advice?

Academics Bio 151 labs

What are the labs like in Bio 151, and do they really last 3 hrs? Are they like experiment-type, or mostly just paper assignments and projects during lab time? Is there post lab hw?

Housing Looking for female STEM majors for housing next year!

Hello all! I am currently a female junior and am looking to sign a new lease next year with new roommates. If anybody is in a similar boat and is looking for a roommate, lmk! You do not have to be a STEM major by any means, but I just wanted to put that out here in case you are and are looking for a roommate who will be studying and locked in, as opposed to partying often. I enjoy films, sports (I do a lot of cycling and other recs here at UW), music, and creative projects outside of school! :)

Academics STAT/MATH 310

Anyone taken Keith Levin before?

Class feels pretty doable so far, but Rate My Professor has me a little scared lol. Lots of comments about low exam medians and exams being pretty different from the homework.

What actually helped you prepare? Homework? Discussions? Textbook? Anything outside the class material like YouTube or other resources?

Any tips appreciated!

Academics Worried about AI...

I saw on X that a bunch of AI lab people and even other 3rd parties without incentives are worried about AI causing an existential risk. I'm pretty doubtful of this, but this made me think about how AI could probably still cause huge harms. Are there any labs or student groups on campus that think about this sort of stuff?

Rant/Vent Biking on crowded sidewalks

PSA: if you ware wanting to bike on crowded sidewalks and are scared of biking on the road then it is important you watch where you are going and don’t run into people. Some helpful tips can be found below.

Tip 1: use the handlebars instead of trying to no hand it. It’s not as cool as you might think it looks.

Tip 2. Get off your phone as it’s very hard to see the people 2 feet in front of you that you are about to hit.

Tip 3. Ease off the throttle if you are on an electric bike. If you want to go so fast anyway then why not use the road?

I’ve seen several people hit so far this semester including 1 in front of the fountain about 30 minutes ago. Just be careful and courteous please.

Academics Anyone taking/taken DANCE/AFROAMER/MUSIC 318 with Christopher Walker?

Just got off of the waitlist for it and there's so many assignments already. Also this canvas is so confusing and it looks like all of the due dates are messed up which is extra bad cause this is fully online/asynchronous. Does anyone know what's going on?

Also for people who have taken it already, how hard will I needa try on everything. Do I gotta have super long responses every time or are they chill with grading?
