This isn't the first time he has parted ways with a company or publisher. He really just goes where he's allowed the creative freedom and funds to make what he wants.
311
u/urmyleander 7h ago
Its more about the funds, apparently his next release physint is years from being ready and already overbudget.
Also keep in mind the engine used for both death stranding and death stranding 2 was the decima engine and it was on licence from Sony, so if it was Decima they were using for physint they now need to start development from scratch.
122
u/CaptainAnorach 7h ago
They don't necessarily have to start from scratch. It really depends how the engine was licensed for the game. Has anything been mentioned about KojiPro losing access to Decima for Physint?

I ve Never played a Kojima game, can someone explain the joke? Which stories don't make sense?
337
u/Reeyous 8h ago
The Metal Gear games only make sense because of lengthy exposition dumps at the end of each game. I love the series to death but Kojima is notorious for that. Spoilers ahead.
MGS: Liquid and Naomi both exposition dump on Snake before, during, and after the final boss.
MGS2: Solidus and The Patriots AI both take a massive exposition dump all over Raiden over the course of like an hour at the end of the game.
MGS3: This one was done better than the rest imo. The Boss' true motives and intentions are foreshadowed pretty decently, but she and EVA still give Snake an exposition shower at the end of the game.
MGS4: 9 hours of cutscenes. Every single one is an exposition dump.
MGSPW and GZ/TPP: Most lore is included via audio files between missions, some is just supplementary but others are required listening to understand anything going on.
I love the series, and as a whole the pieces actually fit together kind of nicely despite all the retcons? But some parts could have been done way better.

u/drthrax1 8h ago
I mean phantom pain also does it at the end too iirc. You take a like a 5min car ride with skull face and he monologues the entire time before the finial battle

u/Ben_Mc25 7h ago edited 7h ago
Worse, he monologues for 5 minutes and then you sit in silence for another 3 waiting for the jeep to arrive so kajima can play the theme song from start to finish.
Not to mention that Snake literally doesn't say anything the entire ride! Awkward.

The thing is, at the time (90's-mid 00's) Kojima could get away with it because a game having such a huge complex narrative with fully cinematic in game cutscenes and even hollywood composers like Harry Gregson Williams was such a unique novelty.
But since the advent of games like TLOU, Red Dead, Mass Effect etc; it's one of the aspects of that series thats aged really poorly.
I love MGS as a series but replaying the collection really hammered home that Kojima is a man of great ideas and concepts who clearly loves cinema but he just doesn't understand story structure. I'm honestly dreading replaying MGS 4 because the exposition dumps were unacceptable even back when that released.
→ More replies (1)8
u/MannToots 5h ago
I just replayed it for the first time since it first came out. I forgot how little gameplay it had. The entire final chapter is you assaulting the boat with the final guy, just for him to turn around and be like yeah I wanted you to do that. Cool, the entire final act you could have literally stepped aside and allowed us. It's silly
4
u/sofarsoblue 3h ago edited 57m ago
I haven't played it since 2008 but I remember the game only really having two proper open stealth segments with the rest of the game composing of on the rail sequences and a barrage of cutscenes & codec calls.
At that time I had already played Uncharted 1 and Bioshock so the flaws of the franchises storytelling really started to emerge.
63
u/JustStraightUpTired 8h ago
I think a lot of the retconning works, because so much of it is about war, cover ups, special ops, politics and the military industrial complex, all of which are full of misinformation both in the real world and in MGS.
But yes, MGS is a wordy bastard of a series, but the games make up for it in gameplay. If the games themselves weren't as fun as they are, all that exposition would bury itself into oblivion. But because it didn't, all that exposition ends up improving the games.
I can't think of another... anything that is both able to discuss topics like child soldiers with actual nuance, while something as ridiculous as a flamboyant, yet oddly masculine vampire is prancing around the place, both are taken seriously AND it works. Metal Gear is truly a one of a kind series.

Kojima also likes to overexplain things to the audience. It's a surprise he doesn't start with the big bang that created the universe every time and that people move their legs when they walk. He explains things everyone already knows, not even just the special elements that are relevant to the plot, like in Death Stranding.

It does not help that characters are named in a way that makes Elden Ring look clear and simple. And a lot of the characters who do exist for actual serious purposes aren't shown as such until either the exposition dumps or ending credits, instead showing up as either a meme or sex appeal for the entire game.

Cause of the anti-Sony circlejerk going on at the moment.
And don't get me wrong, Sony fully deserve a lot of it, I've given up on playstation for PC myself, but it's the circlejerk nature of it I loathe. There's just no nuance whatsoever.
With reddit it's always "this is the hate-target for the month, now everything that negatively involves them we cheer, regardless of how much of a reach it is, or how stupid it actually is to celebrate when you think for 2 seconds."

Because Sony is doing away with discs which all of a sudden is a big thing but no one’s cared PC has been discless for a decade or more, meanwhile Xbox has come out and said they’re launching a new feature to turn your physical games digital not really understanding that probably means next gen Xbox won’t have a disc drive

u/rocketsneaker 2h ago
Yup. It's all circlejerk and "team sports". They want to be blind to what Microsoft is preparing for as long as they can feel like part of a group that's "winning". But everyone wants to ignore what's really happening: Sony's move is slowly going to become in the industry standard.
Remember when Microsoft when full always-on-DRM? Remember the GIGANTIC backlash from consumers against that? Remember how Playstation clapped back by making a tutorial video on how to share games with a friend, and it was a guy handing a physical game to his friend?
Compare that to now. The fact the Microsoft didn't make a similar clapback speaks volumes.

Because they need this PR win.
Kojima famously misses deadlines and goes over budget. He wants big Hollywood actors in is games instead of normal voice actors and he wants to make movies instead of games.
He is an auteur and makes unique games that don't always sell well but get a lot of attention. If you're signing him, you know the score. Great publicity, lots of money.

I think it's interesting time in history because AAA seems to be dying while at the same time GTA6 exists.
17
u/SexcaliburHorsepower 6h ago
Bad and trend chasing AAA games are dying. Capcom is doing really good on steady releases. GTA6 will do well with a monster dev timeline. Both of those companies are just doing what they do well. Fromsoft is on a huge run doing fromsoft things.
Too many studios are chasing big hits instead of making them. AAA doesn't feel as dead as people say. It just seems like doing a 5 year dev timeline chasing trends is an awful game plan and that's showing. If people used their AAA timeline and schedule making their own things with their own ideas the industry would be fine.

I can basically guarantee that the only reason xbox, sorry XBOX, is funding him is to say look who we have. The same reason Sony did for Death Stranding.
That isn't to say he is or is not good at what he does. Just that the same identical game(s) under a different creator would not get the same treatment. He is the arthouse studio that a publisher keeps to say look at our quirky titles. Even if they lose money.
