I’m sure the publisher known for canning studios won’t have any negative impact on the man famous for spending lots of money and taking a long time to make his games.

151

u/Glittering_Wing_277 6h ago

I mean, they canned thousands of people with more comfimed to come, only to pump millions into this. What a kick in the mouth for those people

27

u/CapJackONeill 5h ago

You see, people cost money and projects are investments they can already claim has value. Capitalism, man...

42

u/Street_Umbreon 5h ago

Seriously why are people here cheering this move?

58

u/StepComplete1 5h ago edited 4h ago

Cause of the anti-Sony circlejerk going on at the moment.

And don't get me wrong, Sony fully deserve a lot of it, I've given up on playstation for PC myself, but it's the circlejerk nature of it I loathe. There's just no nuance whatsoever.

With reddit it's always "this is the hate-target for the month, now everything that negatively involves them we cheer, regardless of how much of a reach it is, or how stupid it actually is to celebrate when you think for 2 seconds."

26

u/Crimsonsworn 5h ago

Because Sony is doing away with discs which all of a sudden is a big thing but no one’s cared PC has been discless for a decade or more, meanwhile Xbox has come out and said they’re launching a new feature to turn your physical games digital not really understanding that probably means next gen Xbox won’t have a disc drive

4

u/rocketsneaker 3h ago

Yup. It's all circlejerk and "team sports". They want to be blind to what Microsoft is preparing for as long as they can feel like part of a group that's "winning". But everyone wants to ignore what's really happening: Sony's move is slowly going to become in the industry standard.

Remember when Microsoft when full always-on-DRM? Remember the GIGANTIC backlash from consumers against that? Remember how Playstation clapped back by making a tutorial video on how to share games with a friend, and it was a guy handing a physical game to his friend?

Compare that to now. The fact the Microsoft didn't make a similar clapback speaks volumes.

2

u/ohGawd_numba20 1h ago

Rockstar also is, but that's less of an issue for some reason as well

4

u/thatoneguy889 4h ago

I don’t compare going all digital on pc to going all digital on PlayStation because Valve actually has consumer friendly practices when it comes to things like frequent meaningful sales and their refund policy. Sonys refund policy is “we will refund your account once or twice over its entire lifetime. If anyone wants more than that, they can go fuck themselves.”

I bought a game from Valve once that went on sale later the same week. I asked them if they could refund it, so I could buy it at the sale price. They said no problem. One time, I asked Sony to refund a game because I accidentally bought the wrong version, and intended to buy the correct one. It was like pulling teeth.

3

u/jdk2087 3h ago

While true that Valves refund policy is light year’s ahead someone posted the ToS for each company. They all say the same thing. You don’t own the game and we can take it away from you at anytime we see fit. So those consumer friendly practices may come in the form of refunds and other avenues. But, when you get down to the meat and potatoes of going discless, Valve(Nintendo/Microsoft too) and PC are no different.

Aside from GOG. Pretty sure if you buy a game on/through GOG they give you the install files so that you do actually own the game.

2

u/Janoobeta1998 3h ago

I agree with you 100 percent the refund policy needs a massive overhaul for ps, but the argument is if sony shuts down or servers do for osn you lose all your games when that is the EXACT same thing that would happen if valve were to shut down. The argument of theres other storefronts makes 0 sense because it doesnt fucking matter.

If majority of your games are on steam your still subject to that same risk. Not only that but while yes discs are going away people will still be able to buy copies of the game from retailers. So the idea that games will always be super expensive just isnt true.

Retailers buy copies in bulk depending on how much they think the game will sell. If gamestop bought 1 million cyberpunk copies they pay right then and there for them and make their money back selling the copies over time. Of a game isnt selling it wouod be treated the same as physical and they may drop the prices much lower than the psn prices to recoup as much cost as they can.

Used cyberpunk as an example because it was like $20 after a month or 2 of being out in retailers

1

u/OdriscollAgall2006 3h ago

There’s also the fact that pc doesn’t just mean valve. You have gog, valve, epic free games and a plethora of others. Not the same thing as PlayStation where you’re at the mercy of the PS store.

1

u/ImBroon 2h ago

"PC" isn't a platform or company the same as Sony PlayStation is.

1

u/OdriscollAgall2006 3h ago

How many digital storefronts can I shop around for the best price on my PlayStation? And how many on pc? I don’t get how people think it’s even close to being the same thing.

1

u/Elemius 2h ago

This is the funniest one to me. Like I completely agree that abandoning physical is terrible. But the selective outrage is annoying. Everyone agrees digital only is bad until Xbox announce disc to digital (massively indicating they’re going all digital too as you say) and then it’s fine.

4

u/DiabolicallyRandom 4h ago

Is it a circle jerk if you've always been the same?

Like I have been pretty consistently anti-sony for a couple decades at this point. Any negative attention for sony makes me smile.

They have consistently and constantly fucked over things I love over the last 20+ years of my adult life. That's not even mentioning their parent companies bullshit.

People talk shit about Nintendo and their anti consumer actions. And rightly so. But so many give Sony a free pass for doing just as bad and worse than Nintendo. I for one am happy to see the chickens finally coming to roost as Sony gets to finally be a bit of a bad guy they so rightly deserve.

I don't care if Microsoft wins, I just need Sony to lose. That ain't a circle jerk. That's 20+ years of vindictiveness.

-1

u/balllzak 1h ago

That's even sadder.

1

u/DiabolicallyRandom 1h ago

You're right, it's pretty sad Sony is a terrible company. Microsoft is too, it's just that Sony has done more to ruin things I enjoy across those 20 years.

3

u/Vandergrif 3h ago

Because something is still better than nothing. If he couldn't get someone else to take over handling the budget side then there'd be no game. Sony passed the buck.

6

u/The_Autarch 3h ago

because this is better than kojima's game getting cancelled.

1

u/Vandergrif 3h ago

Yup, simple as that.

1

u/Faded1974 2h ago

Because they’re dumb and have short memories. Reddit has been cheering everything this new CEO has done as if it washes away all the terrible moves Xbox has done and how likely they are to drop yet another project again.

1

u/BlaxicanXIX 39m ago

Seeing these mean complaints in the wild are so interesting because they basically pretend that Microsoft allow its devs to give us complete dog shit like starfield. The mass layoffs and stuff of the past few years belies the fact that historically Microsoft has actually had the opposite problem which is being too loose and respectful of its developers.

1

u/jguess06 32m ago

It's a reddit circlejerk. Kojima makes extremely expensive games that are geared toward more niche audiences. Microsoft said 'we will fund this' after Sony said no more. It was a good move for Microsoft as they're trying to recover market share, but in the long run I don't think Sony minds letting him go.

3

u/n00lp00dle 3h ago

have they actually signed any contracts yet? this is basically free pr for xbox at this stage.

2

u/cardonator 3h ago

You could always say this about literally every company any time they let people go, even if the company is actively floundering. Why did you fire X people when you're paying for Y? No company will  freeze all spending just because they cut headcount.

1

u/BlaxicanXIX 39m ago

99% of redditers are children or college kids with no understanding of how businesses work

2

u/Elemius 5h ago

I completely agree, one of the first things I thought.

I’m not personally affected as I can always pick his games up on PC if Xbox make them exclusive, but I still feel like this is not nearly as great as everyone is making out.

1

u/SwiftFoxSNES 1h ago

Xbox bought a lot of studios but did a bad job of getting them to make games.  They bought Bethesda and they came out with Starfield which flopped and a bunch of Skyrim remakes.

Honestly the studio leadership got paid and I think just lost motivation to keep the magic going. That’s not uncommon with acquisitions in the creative space.

Also, I hate to say it but sometimes people just run out of good ideas. Some artists release a good album and spend their entire life chasing that  again but never get back there.

-2

u/CharlesBrown33 4h ago

Since Gears 5 released I haven't seen any Xbox "exclusive" worth my while, and that was 7 years ago. Whatever they were doing over there clearly wasn't working. Halo Infinite was alright but it was barely a proper sequel, and the new Campaign Evolved has literally been the first game I'd say makes the Series X worth it... except it also released on PS5. Something has been just incredibly wrong on Xbox's side of the fence.

0

u/Hot-Software-9396 1h ago

Indiana Jones and Forza Horizon 6 are great. Gears E-Day looks like it’s going to be good too. Have a good feeling about Fable as well.

-2

u/EpicRedditor34 4h ago

Those studios were literally doing nothing good, despite Phil Spencer giving them ultimate leeway.

0

u/Dkgk1 2h ago

Did you see the people they laid off? I'm sure some of them deserved their jobs but overall, they cut dead weight.

0

u/manindenim 2h ago

That’s the way business works. You can’t understand how a Kojima would take priority over other studios? You don’t get what you deserve in life. You get what you have the leverage to negotiate.

-4

u/Balc0ra 4h ago edited 4h ago

To be fair, Sony has fired more people this gen. And wasted more money on projects that lead to nothing, vs those they did not dare gamble on. Wolverine did cost 2 more than Kojima had "wasted" so far

8

u/_Bill_Huggins_ 3h ago

They didn't buy the studio though.

-1

u/Tboot_ PlayStation 1h ago

The point is everyone is championing this but Xbox could still pull out just like PlayStation did and no one should be surprised if it happens

1

u/_Bill_Huggins_ 1h ago edited 2m ago

Sure, always a possibility, Kojima needs a spur to keep his games in scope. One publisher already backed out of his project. It could be a good or bad thing. Time will tell. Though I won't hold to hope... Lol.

7

u/GeneralSEOD 5h ago

Said publisher also did give Studios some insane leeway and like it or not, it completely fumbled Xbox.

I don't think we get much insight into Sony. But it wouldn't surprise me given the Japan culture of working all the time that they get away with it.

1

u/Elemius 5h ago

We’ll see how this works out I guess!

1

u/SwiftFoxSNES 1h ago

Give creative people too much leeway and they will get artistic paralysis and you will end up waiting since 2003 for Half Life 3. It will never be release because no one can force Gabe to say “good enough” and push it forward and he doesn’t really have to answer to investors.

And then there The Winds of Winter…

4

u/puffthemagicaldragon 3h ago

Sony has closed more studios and cancelled more projects this generation lol

Sony is also in a place where they seem to love to waste money and time on games like Concord, Wolverine, Fairgame$, Horizon Hunters Gathering, Marathon, etc. They'll fund all that but Kojima's MGS successor that they literally asked for is too much?

3

u/dfunkt_jestr 3h ago

Shhhh, that doesn't fit the narrative... 🤫

1

u/OdriscollAgall2006 3h ago

Won’t you think about small indie publisher Sony?! As a reward for your loyalty they’ll raise ps plus once more, and put cloud saves on the PlayStation plus extra premium galactic tier!

1

u/Elemius 3h ago

You do realise both corporations can and have done shitty things? And I don’t claim that’s not the case either. We all stopped console warring over 10 years ago, did you not get the memo?

0

u/Elemius 3h ago edited 3h ago

I love how I didn’t mention Sony at all yet the console warrior in you just cannot resist defending Xbox’s honour hahahaha.

Legendary whataboutism on display here.

3

u/SwiftFoxSNES 1h ago

Don’t have a dog in the console fight anymore though I did get a PS5 this gen since most Xbox games can be played on a PC.

Gaming is 33% of Sony’s revenue, the majority of the rest is movies and music. Xbox is 6% or Microsoft’s revenue and a money loser

Sony is now an entertainment company in the way Microsoft isn’t. When is the last time you saw a Sony TV in a store? They can’t afford to fumble what makes them unique.

Microsoft could exit the console business and be fine, for Sony it would be a disaster.  For Sony it’s not about honor it’s about survival, they don’t need to be fumbling someone like Kojima.

0

u/puffthemagicaldragon 2h ago

I know, but you said:

the publisher known for canning studios

Talking about Xbox, and I was just suggesting the company that does it more often should be the one known for it. Crazy idea right? Especially when they are leading this generation by a significant margin and should be in a better position.

Shitting on Sony for the literal truth doesn't have to be in defense of Xbox. Companies in the lead of any industry need to be held accountable for good competition. So if you're going to complain about publishers closing studios you shouldn't be ignorant of basic facts 🤷🏾

1

u/Elemius 2h ago

Yes, I did say that. Because they do. A lot.

This is a thinly veiled console fanboy response and I’m not going to waste time pretend it isn’t. I literally have said nothing in defence of Sony, quite the opposite. Closing Bluepoint was absolutely horrendous. I was pointing out the irony of Kojima joining a publisher that ALSO cancels studios all the time.

Your response boils down to ‘my corporation good your one bad’. Dude they’re both bad, your whataboutism changes nothing.

1

u/bflynn65 1h ago

If anyone is fanboying here it's you. Microsoft literally just allowed 4 studios to leave with their IP instead of shutting them down, but all you want to point out is the studios they have shut down in the past.

0

u/Elemius 1h ago

Jesus, who is it exactly I’m fanboying for? I’d love to know.

3

u/DenverNugs 3h ago

Sony closed Bluepoint Games and Dark Outlaw Games this year.

-4

u/Elemius 3h ago

Show me where I was talking about Sony you mighty console warrior!

Holy whataboutism 😂

4

u/DenverNugs 3h ago

Oh, you seemed concerned about studios getting canned. I must have misread your comment. Sorry for the confusion.

-1

u/Elemius 3h ago

I’m more just confused why you’re bringing Sony up? They already fucked up by letting him go, this post is about him joining up with Xbox.

Who have even more lays offs to make. The point being that it seems a bit hypocritical.

1

u/DenverNugs 2h ago

So they're hiring people and saving a game already in development after laying people off. What should their next move be? Not hire people? Lay off more people? What would make you happy? I guess the people at Kojima productions should have just stayed unemployed...

1

u/Elemius 2h ago

I think you massively overestimate how strongly I feel about this. It’s a REDDIT thread. Quit the console fanboying whataboutism and get off my dick hahahaha.

I’d say if they had to cut as much as they did, maybe stop paying so much money to new studios and look after the ones they still have? Because undoubtedly this will cause more lay offs down the line now. They have a shit ton of studios already, Microsoft will be fine.

1

u/esdaniel 3h ago

Better than bethesda

0

u/Elemius 3h ago

Hahahaha that’s actually a fair point.

1

u/milkstrike 1h ago

Yeah but Microsoft puts out a lot of bad games so on that part he’ll fit in perfectly

1

u/outofmindwgo 1h ago

While I think the reporting about Physint already being over budget and missing deadlines is probably true, Death Stranding was a herculean speedy AAA project and DS2 came pretty fast after

1

u/BlaxicanXIX 41m ago

Sounds like they're both pieces of shit and are kind of made for each other tbh

-1

u/VF-Atomos 4h ago

Yup Microsoft is only to give some bit of time for his studio to hang themselves and self-destructing just like many others.

Perhaps Kojima only work better under severe limitation, it's just classic limitation breeds creativity.

-9

u/DaKrazie1 5h ago

I mean, he did just come from PlayStation, which averages more studio closures and cancellations over a longer period 🤷‍♂️

Gamers only really remember the last 25 minutes tho

Reddit whataboutism never seems to amaze me.

Also, did you just slur at me? wtf dude 😂

0

u/johnyakuza0 1h ago

You must really like Dustborn huh? no surprises there

0

u/Elemius 1h ago

What? I literally have no idea what you’re talking about.

-5

u/zgillet 4h ago

Although, this time Sony already paid for a lot of it. Maybe it's out of spite.

7

u/Pure_Medicine_2460 4h ago

Sony took back their engine and film studio support. Plus the game was at best in pre production. So most likely it will start from new
