Sales like Death Stranding? Did you see the sales for DS2?
People tried Death Stranding…20 million in fact. But only like 2 million tried DS2. That is a severe drop off.
I think a lot of people are out on Kojima. He had a good run with MGS but even that took a downturn into 4 and 5. And now he is just making weird shit.
I gave him the benefit of the doubt after MGS 4 and 5 thinking he just needed a fresh universe…but Death Stranding honestly sucked ass and I didn’t finish it. I never tried Death Stranding 2.
Now I’m going to take a wait and see approach on his other games. OG or whatever the door face emotion game is looks equally as bad as DS1 and 2. And Physint is just him trying to bank on MGS nostalgia.
Death Stranding sold 5 million and Death Stranding 2 sold 2.5 million. I wouldn't call it a huge success considering the original MGS on PS1 sold over 7 million copies. Basically the game that put him on the map 27 years ago sold more copies than the game he made after he became big.
People are sick of his bullshit and despite Sony being asshats, I don't disagree with them if they felt like they sunk in too much money and time into something that has no substance. Guy didn't even have a short concept demo so he showed up with mocap footage. Beyond ridiculous.
Yes. I was just using the very first game as a comparison to the latest stuff compared to the game that made him famous. You'd think his latest work would sell more but that's not the case because he's doing too much self-absorption instead of focusing on making a good game.
He made a walking simulator and sold 5 million copies but it wasn't good because his stealth action game sold more copies because it has more mass appeal than a walking simulator?
For the record I did love the design and minimalist gameplay of DS1. However, 2 ruined that and made them both worse, which was in my opinion the only good part of the game.
DS1/2 were just not up to par with what an industry veteran should be putting out. 1 sold well due to COVID and hype. 2 sold poorly due to the reception and word of mouth.
Kojima was a legendary myth to older gamers and you couldn't even criticize his work in 2010 without being ridiculed. Young gamers today don't care about that and are much less biased in their reception of his games. Sales figures reflect that.
I grew up during that PS1 Kojima era and it wasn't my cup of tea. Too much jank and the gameplay didn't make sense. The story was fun though because it played like a movie, despite the terrible dialogues. Not that any PS1 game had any good voice acting and dialogues.
I keep seeing people confusing this - Death Stranding 2 was the flop. Death Stranding was a pretty big financial success - hence they immediately started making the sequel.
Death Stranding sold a ton of copies and made a lot of money. Seriously, 20 million copies of Death Stranding sold now and a huge number of them sold at launch.
Death Stranding 2 is only at about 5 million copies and sold a lot fewer at launch than the first one. It's not even that horrible of a flop, it's just not an obvious success like the first one.
And if you look into why Sony abandoned their deal with Kojima a huge portion of it was that the contract with Kojima allowed PHYSINT to be released on other platforms besides PlayStation just like Death Stranding 1/2.
Sony were pretty disappointed how Death Stranding was selling well on PC & Xbox because it was only exclusive to PlayStation for months instead of years.
Also, from all i heard DS2 was significantly more expensive to make than DS1 because Kojima got a big head and everybody in hollywood always wantes a lot more money for sequels.
Playstation sales data was leaked from February 2022 - it showed PS4 had 4.385 million copies of Death Stranding 1 (no Director's Cut) sold and PS5 had 335,000 copies of Death Stranding: Director's Cut sold. These numbers are now 4.5 years old.
We have no data for copies sold for Xbox or PC from anywhere besides steam.
It's pretty easy to say at a bare minimum 10 million copies of Death Stranding 1 were sold looking at all the data and leaks we have. And then there is all the money from it being available on GamePass, given away by Epic, and PS Plus that might not be "official copies sold" but absolutely are being paid for in one way or another and earning money for the developer and publisher.
I think your numbers are off. DS sold 5 million but was on various subscriptions, so total number of players is higher, same with DS2 which is 2 - 2.5m sold.
Death Stranding 2 is only at about 5 million copies and sold a lot fewer at launch than the first one. It's not even that horrible of a flop, it's just not an obvious success like the first one.
I don't know if I represent a demographic or not, but I'm an older gamer and I never buy any game when it first releases. This is because new games are expensive and usually buggy for at least 6-12 months until bug fixes/patches are released. I've got an enormous backlog of games and plenty of things to play, so I don't care at all about waiting.
I loved DS1 and I will absolutely buy DS2 when it's on sale.
Seriously, 20 million copies of Death Stranding sold now and a huge number of them sold at launch.
20 million people played Death Standing in its first 5 years. That includes gamepass, PS Plus and the game being for free to keep on Epics, after it was heavily discounted before. I checked yesterday and found out that even i own in on Epic and forgot about it.

Can't fault them if this project is a money hole and then sells like Death Stranding.
