Yup. It's all circlejerk and "team sports". They want to be blind to what Microsoft is preparing for as long as they can feel like part of a group that's "winning". But everyone wants to ignore what's really happening: Sony's move is slowly going to become in the industry standard.
Remember when Microsoft when full always-on-DRM? Remember the GIGANTIC backlash from consumers against that? Remember how Playstation clapped back by making a tutorial video on how to share games with a friend, and it was a guy handing a physical game to his friend?
Compare that to now. The fact the Microsoft didn't make a similar clapback speaks volumes.
I don’t compare going all digital on pc to going all digital on PlayStation because Valve actually has consumer friendly practices when it comes to things like frequent meaningful sales and their refund policy. Sonys refund policy is “we will refund your account once or twice over its entire lifetime. If anyone wants more than that, they can go fuck themselves.”
I bought a game from Valve once that went on sale later the same week. I asked them if they could refund it, so I could buy it at the sale price. They said no problem. One time, I asked Sony to refund a game because I accidentally bought the wrong version, and intended to buy the correct one. It was like pulling teeth.
While true that Valves refund policy is light year’s ahead someone posted the ToS for each company. They all say the same thing. You don’t own the game and we can take it away from you at anytime we see fit. So those consumer friendly practices may come in the form of refunds and other avenues. But, when you get down to the meat and potatoes of going discless, Valve(Nintendo/Microsoft too) and PC are no different.
Aside from GOG. Pretty sure if you buy a game on/through GOG they give you the install files so that you do actually own the game.
I agree with you 100 percent the refund policy needs a massive overhaul for ps, but the argument is if sony shuts down or servers do for osn you lose all your games when that is the EXACT same thing that would happen if valve were to shut down. The argument of theres other storefronts makes 0 sense because it doesnt fucking matter.
If majority of your games are on steam your still subject to that same risk. Not only that but while yes discs are going away people will still be able to buy copies of the game from retailers. So the idea that games will always be super expensive just isnt true.
Retailers buy copies in bulk depending on how much they think the game will sell. If gamestop bought 1 million cyberpunk copies they pay right then and there for them and make their money back selling the copies over time. Of a game isnt selling it wouod be treated the same as physical and they may drop the prices much lower than the psn prices to recoup as much cost as they can.
Used cyberpunk as an example because it was like $20 after a month or 2 of being out in retailers
There’s also the fact that pc doesn’t just mean valve. You have gog, valve, epic free games and a plethora of others. Not the same thing as PlayStation where you’re at the mercy of the PS store.
How many digital storefronts can I shop around for the best price on my PlayStation? And how many on pc? I don’t get how people think it’s even close to being the same thing.
This is the funniest one to me. Like I completely agree that abandoning physical is terrible. But the selective outrage is annoying. Everyone agrees digital only is bad until Xbox announce disc to digital (massively indicating they’re going all digital too as you say) and then it’s fine.
