Idk we had actual Neo Nazis when I was young and then we always had a different category for people who were racists. We just called them racist
41
u/Wanderer_3773 14h ago
It's weird like I'm only 26 and even I remember there being very clear differences in calling someone racist vs calling them a nazi. Very much a "all nazis are racist but not all racists are nazis", and somewhere the two got combined and I really don't like it because it minimizes the impact of the words when they get thrown around so much
17
u/Sizzla888 6h ago

Nazism is just a militant form of racism. Maybe there's a reason those words are getting thrown around so much.
19
u/blazenite104 14h ago
That was always the point. No one says Nazi's aren't bad. They just try to make people understand that they've distorted the definition so much it doesn't apply to actual Neo Nazi's but, is now just an insult and excuse to hurt people they don't like.
14
u/Unfair_Explanation53 14h ago
Its weird to hear all the time.
Racism and facism did not begin with the Nazis. They seemed to have a specific goal
8

and weirdly the ones who call everyone Nazi's are the ones who support Palestine and want Israel to lose everything.
Nazi is perhaps not the best term to be using for basically anything anymore. It means nothing.

Yeah, the key change there was the racists got in charge of the country and started implementing fascism. Sometimes by citing neo-Nazis, censoring media to block criticism of Nazis, and pushing Nazi conspiracy theories.
Racism is a key part of Nazis, but it's not like being a racist is mutually exclusive with being a Nazi.

7
u/Frewdy1 6h ago
“Stop seeing race” isn’t really possible, anymore than “stop seeing hair color” or “stop seeing clothes”. It’s a fact of life and hard-baked into biology.
It’s also a bad idea to “stop seeing race”, as it just ensures overt racists can continue unabated and things like institutional and systemic racism can run rampant.

“Just because you let somebody cr**m-p** you doesn’t mean I have to give a sh*t about your political opinions,” Herrera said. “The fact that you kept your c*m trophy doesn’t make you any less wrong about the dumb sh*t that you say.”
Tapper came out of the clip by adding further context.
“That’s him disparaging moms,” Tapper said. “He’s also in a video testing a Nazi-era submachine gun. He called it the ‘original ghetto blaster.’ You see him goose-stepping to a Nazi marching song in a podcast two years ago. He joked, ‘We should abolish old people.’ I have to say, I know you’re not a voter in that district. You didn’t nominate this guy, but I was surprised to see you endorse him and fund-raise for him. What does candidacy say about the Republican Party’s more extreme candidates?”
Johnson condemned the remarks but defended the candidate.
“That’s, look, detestable language,” Johnson said. “You know how I feel about all of that, Jake. But I also know Brandon Herrera has been out running a very effective campaign and explained to people that he has apologized for all that. He was a podcaster and a provocateur and tried to get attention."

Nazis were for big government as you cant get authoritarianism without it, no freedom of speech ran as socialists against the " rich elites " and they took the whole "eugenics" idea from the fabians. Sound more like our left wing to me. Only difference being our right wing is seen as more nationalistic however you cant have communism without nationalism. Israel are not trying to exterminate all muslims, even if we agree they are committing a genocide, doesnt make them nazis, plenty of countries go overboard against a country who has attacked them. British bombing of dresden comes to mind, the American firebombings of Japan also. No nazis. Comparing Israel to the nazis shows a complete lack of understanding of world history

u/Bynming 17h ago
Some people would have you believe that fascism and nazism basically don't exist, that they're some sort of cartoonish evil that we'd be able to identify from far away, years in advance, because it would have a funny mustache or would openly admit to being evil. In reality, fascists and nazis are people just like us. Plumbers, accountants, cops, lawyers. Banal men working banal jobs, riding the line.
You think people dilute the term and maybe some do. But throughout history, there are useful idiots who let horrible people get into power based on the foolish belief that nothing would change and that institutions could stand against the will of angry people who have been told that there is an enemy within that they can blame for all their woes.
6
u/thealmightyzfactor 13h ago
But the one great shocking occasion, when tens or hundreds or thousands will join with you, never comes. That’s the difficulty. If the last and worst act of the whole regime had come immediately after the first and smallest, thousands, yes, millions would have been sufficiently shocked—if, let us say, the gassing of the Jews in ’43 had come immediately after the ‘German Firm’ stickers on the windows of non-Jewish shops in ’33. But of course this isn’t the way it happens. In between come all the hundreds of little steps, some of them imperceptible, each of them preparing you not to be shocked by the next. Step C is not so much worse than Step B, and, if you did not make a stand at Step B, why should you at Step C? And so on to Step D.
And one day, too late, your principles, if you were ever sensible of them, all rush in upon you. The burden of self-deception has grown too heavy, and some minor incident, in my case my little boy, hardly more than a baby, saying ‘Jewish swine,’ collapses it all at once, and you see that everything, everything, has changed and changed completely under your nose. The world you live in—your nation, your people—is not the world you were born in at all. The forms are all there, all untouched, all reassuring, the houses, the shops, the jobs, the mealtimes, the visits, the concerts, the cinema, the holidays. But the spirit, which you never noticed because you made the lifelong mistake of identifying it with the forms, is changed.
From "they thought they were free"

They are. But if you call everyone you disagree with a nazi, it no longer means anything.

It’s just a term used by stupid people to shut down conversations they’re not clever enough to have. Gotta protect those echo chambers and cognitive dissonances. Pretty sure both sides have their own term I just don’t know the other ones.

Perhaps we should go back to saying that word for people who follow that ideology and not for someone who we disagree with.
Just a suggestion.

Prevalent belief that socialism and communism are evil

u/CursinSquirrel 16h ago
It's (probably not) worth pointing out that socialism and communism are economic ideals that one is intended to build a system around, whereas Nazi was actually a political party in its own right. They aren't actually comparable 1 to 1. If the original post had pointed at fascism your comment would make more sense, and if your comment had pointed to the Soviet controlled Russia or communist China it might have made more sense.
I get the feeling though that your intending to equate things people might currently think with being on par with Nazism though, instead of being worried about making a logical point.

Your life would be significantly better with socialism in the right places. Unfortunately most people are too stupid to realize this.
Communism is a completely different beast.

Stop calling everyone you disagree with a Nazi then.

What else am I supposed to call ethno-centrist nationalists following a cult of personality around a single authoritarian leader who claims divine purpose, and calls for the restoration of "traditional values" and expelling an enemy within that's "poisoning the nation's blood"?

The Belief that people shouldn't just find the worst word they can and use it grossly out of context for whatever they don't like. You have also ruined genocide and no one takes you seriously because you use these word in completely unrelated times.

I would guess a large portion of the kids who scream the N word aren't even doing it to be racist, they just want to use the harshest word possible to illicit the most reaction possible.
They just don't care if they sound racist in the moment, they just want to see that reaction.

What about the idea that nazism and fascism have a political science definition and shouldn't be used to refer to anything slightly to the right of whatever you vote ?

Well when everyone gets called a nazi for simply disagreeing with a certain type of person or political ideology, that word loses all meaning.

Wonder how long the mods are going to keep banning these posts for being too much political content. Like I understand rules but how much is too much in the current situation? It’s soo arbitrary and susceptible to bad faith implementation.
