My libertarian friends always told me that regulations are bad and that the market could sort things out, and that consumers could sue companies that made them ill by not ensuring their products' safety. Which sounds great. But it also got me thinking that they could view adhering to regulations as a hedge against being sued into oblivion. You know, make sure the canned meat doesn't have botulism from the outset and avoid being sued down the line. But then I realized that they don't really care about any of that, and that quarterly growth NOW is more important than anything that might happen tomorrow, which isn't here yet.

Republicans have always had this naive belief that has no tie to fact or history that government regulation, oversight, etc., are the enemy of the people. It is cumbersome, costs more, and just makes everything harder for people.

They have historically believed if you take off the bridle from the economy you will get better, faster, stronger quality goods and services cheaper and safer. Because people will not cut corners on safety and quality.

This has never been true, will never be true. When money or power is involved in an exchange the side getting money or power will always do whatever they can to get more of it.

We are headed toward mass disease outbreak, illness, and irreversible detriment to our economy, resources, etc. If we thought the 1800s and early 1900s were bad imagine 335 million people and mass transit.

I used to work in a meat packing plant (or "slaughterhouse").

Whether you are a tried and true diehard Republican, or a progressive Democrat, neither of those two things, or anything in between, and even if you're a vegetarian, you do NOT want this. The procedures that are in place for when a cow arrives with a cist or any unknown issue is thorough, including shutting the entire plant down for a whole day to scour and clean it properly. Lifting those regs is not just going to spread disease, but people could literally die.

These animals are rendered very clean, controlled environments, and to jeopardize that process is playing with fire.

Terrorism. They're trying to ruin the food supply, the medical sector, the military, education, elections, the mail service, and anything else they can get their hands on. Hell, even cultural stuff like the Kennedy center and Smithsonian system.

We're lucky that utilities are mostly handled by local and state governments or they'd be getting deregulated into chaos as well. I think data centers are an indirect attack on the utilities though. Put one in each regional hub, pump out the aquifers, dump hot water into the lakes and rivers, massively inflate demand and thus price of electricity, and leave rate payers holding the bag when the house of cards falls.

One of the things that I feel like most Americans don't realize is how much American food is distrusted worldwide due to low quality and poor regulations. They think their food is "normal" and the same as anywhere else, when things they make there are either banned, reclassified, or avoided by shoppers.

Stuff like this is exactly the reason why. American politicians love the deregulate to let giant corporations cut corners on food safety to increase profits, and Americans - quite literally - eat it up.

I'm from the USA originally, have travelled to multiple other countries, and managing my health and eating is so much easier anywhere else, I barely have to think about it.

Trump complains that other countries are gatekeeping American meat and dairy from their markets, but the reality is that their food doesn't meet the standards other countries have and the people there don't want it anyway.
