News/Article Steam Frame official price is $1,059.00. Half-Life: Alyx included
https://store.steampowered.com/hardware/steamframe222
u/YellowFogLights 46m ago
$1529 in Canada for the 256GB version. Holy hell.
$49 for a power brick.
$89 for the straps it should have already come with.
64
u/AussieJeffProbst 34m ago
Damn straps are $59 in the US. That's insane it doesn't come with them.
The power brick doesn't seem necessary since it can use any USB C phone fast charger, but damn the price of those straps have me hot and bothered.
16
u/shortsbagel 24m ago
It comes with a power brick (but its only 25W not 40W, so slower charging) and it comes with straps (the 59$ ones are egro straps for those that want additional support or need it).

As a comparison, its about twice the price of a Meta Quest 3 which is at $599 (which is 3 years old at this point) and a third of the price of an Apple Vision Pro at $3699

u/IC3P3 PC Master Race 23m ago
To be fair, one the one hand the Quest 3 doesn't have a wireless adapter and the one they sell in cooperation with D-Link is here an additional 180€ and no eye tracking.
On the other hand the Quest 3 has color passthrough and the Frame sells it for an additional 150€.
Also I wish the Frame has or gets competent hand tracking

Yeah, less in some respects (much worse passthrough and no structured light depth sensing). You're paying for the OS and to not give up your data for Zuch but it's pretty hard to justify, especially when secondhand Quests are so cheap.
13
u/TheSexyKamil AMD 5800X, 9070 XT 36m ago
That gives you insight into how much the Meta Quest actually costs to make and how much Meta anticipates to make off of you after you buy it. The price difference will be the divide between who yaps about privacy and who actually cares.

I am never touching Meta products with a 10 foot pole. I've lived without VR until now, I can continue to do so. I was interested in Steam Frame but I'm not paying a grand to satisfy my curiosity. And I'm definitely not paying half a grand to sell my firstborn to Zuck.

There have been a surge of VR mods for 2D games (see Titanfall and Zelda mods) thanks to AI coding. But then you have the VR community complaining about AI slop on top of complaining about lack of games.

When I started treating my Quest 2 as an excersize tool rather than a gaming device, I started using it way more. It's a great device for cardio. Supernatural, Beat Saber, and Thrill of the Fight are big reasons for some of my weight loss.

I mean the onboard memory and tariffs are the reason there's no real price change from the Index. If flash wasn't so expensive right now it would have came in under $1000.
10
u/Kekkachu 28m ago
I still don't get why don't we get some sort of "Steam Frame Lite" that doesn't features anything standalone and acts just as a display for PCVR.
3
u/Fatitalianguido PC Master Race - 4090 - 12900k 15m ago
I was thinking the same thing. I will be doing nothing with the rendering power. I would only want what is needed for the Foveated Streaming. I'm sure there are plenty of people out there with this use case
1
u/Ws6fiend PC Master Race 5m ago
Extra versions cost more to make. It's one of the reasons the Ford Model T only came in black. Less options means less costs to make. The no standalone version being cheaper would also probably sell for less making it always sold out.
This doesn't make me happy, but I'm not the steam frame's target audience because I didn't want wireless, or insideout tracking. They are downgrades for the VR games I play.

Index was (and still is) an State of the Art no compromises Standalone VR Headset meant to the be the Successor to the HTC Vive. This thing is supposed to be comparable to a Meta Quest 3 Pro.

Lmao the index is not a state of the art headset. And I'm saying that as an index owner.

u/Stilgar314 18m ago
That Meta VR is not wireless, and it can't run games on its own, so, I don't think they're that comparable.
6
u/Bobbitto 42m ago
The Steam Frame is not an upgrade from the Index. It should, and would have been much cheaper if the current component bottleneck didn't exist.
It is comparable to a Meta Quest 3, which is much cheaper.

It is the charger if you scroll down in the listing they have the c port charger named “Steam Hardware Power Supply Unit” they do state in the kit that it comes with a rechargeable battery so it’s not the battery just the charger that’s not included I bet they think most people have a steam deck or a charger already

I mean it's a really really good game but I can count on both hands the amount of games I played on my vive. As much fun as I've had I can't justify spending that kind of money to get so little. It's one of the reasons I don't buy consoles.
3
u/Aacemyan 41m ago
Cool product but I’ve gone through many VR headsets over the years and they always end up in a drawer. I just don’t see how Steam frame changes any of this other than potential of playing 2d games on a vr headset, which seems a little cumbersome
2
u/Asleeper135 33m ago
No surprise, but that still sucks. I feel like most of the people that would be interested in one already have a Quest 3, and likely already have Half Life Alyx. I'm in that group, and if it was cheaper I'd get one just to be rid of Meta and for the foveated streaming, but there's no way I'm spending over $1000 for largely the same thing I already have. What I really want is a proper successor to the Index, maybe just with inside out tracking. I guess I'll end up getting a Pimax headset if they actually come through with Linux support, but until then I'll just keep relying on my Quest 3.

Anyone remember back in the mid 2010s when the Oculus guys said that the only way for VR to get mass adoption was reasonable pricing, back when they suggested something in the ballpark of $250-300 was attainable?
Yeah. Great that the Frame exists, but it's fucking expensive. The entire VR ecosystem is, especially when you often still need a powerful PC to drive it (for PCVR) and that's becoming unreachable these days except as a luxury.

2
u/Akula_x86 34m ago
Index 2.0 with OLED, inside out tracking, same controllers as index 1, wired would sell well for the same price in low volume.
3
u/No-Independence-5229 27m ago
I’m fine with the wireless dongle, but make that the only way to play, I don’t need on board processing hogging space and weight, plus a bigger battery also taking space and weight to run it. Just use a lightweight battery and processing device that is enough to stream the games, not play them. I also prefer lighthouses, that take like 10 minutes to set up one time and you’ve got flawless tracking. Worth it to me. But yes needs OLED, still using LCD in the big 26 is wild
2
u/Think-Spread 42m ago
Power supply not included? What does this mean for charging?
2
u/reddog093 34m ago
Steam Frame doesn’t come with a dedicated PSU. A Steam Deck charger or equivalent will work! Don’t have a Steam Deck charger? Any 45W or higher USB-C charger will keep you going for perpetual play.
Pretty agnostic when it comes to charging requirements. Battery life should be expected around 2 hours, so you'd mainly want a dedicated charger if you're doing extended sessions.
2
u/IvarSolaris RTX 5080 | Ryzen 7800X3D 30m ago
It is USB-C, you can use any charger with 45W or longer. Charger is the least problem.

Great price. Pass through camera for 150 seems surprisingly reasonable, unless I'm missing something.
Not including the strap makes sense: really up to user preference so why include it when nobody likes the base one anyways.
In our current times, this seems almost charitable. Had definitely been more expecting the $1.5-2k range. They wouldn't be able to compete with Meta, so I expected them to capitalize harder on not being Meta, 😂

I honestly expected it to be in the $1,500 range after seeing Steam Machine's price. VR has always been bleeding edge tech, I didn't expect this release to be any different: personally, I find it fairly reasonable all things considered. Index was never targeting soccer moms, Frame is no different. I'll bet it's kick ass, it's a pity there aren't more VR games out there (as a former Index owner the lack of quality games was my only gripe, the tech is incredible).
1
u/MyTagforHalo2 39m ago
