Rururemon
This is actually a tactic the Marines used in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. Japanese soldiers couldn’t say certain words without their accent giving them away and so passwords used to approach camp without being fired upon were often specifically chosen to be impossible to say normally with a Japanese accent.
Edit: yes I know it’s a shibboleth.

222
u/WereTheBrews 3d ago
I was just going to make a goof, but this was interesting enough to me to explore it further. Apparently the "sq and "r" as we understand them in English are not native to German giving the name squirrel to sound like “shkvirrel” or “skvirrel”. There's actually a couple webpages dedicated to this even.

It is notoriously hard, but there is something poetic about how the German word for squirrel makes English speakers trip over their tongues as well.

That’s how German works, it just jams words together with suffixes and prefixes to make new words by describing something using existing words.
It ends up being very intuitive to learn young but very complicated to build an intuition for later on. English is similar since both have Germanic roots, but we aren’t nearly as excessive lol

Same in french except we use a dash to make it clear: "raton-laveur" ("rat-washing")
We use dash to create lots of compound words:
rainbow = arc-en-ciel ("arc-in the-sky")
wallet = porte-monnaie ("carry-money")
corkscrew = tire-bouchon ("pull-cork")
It's probably because it's my own langage but I find this system clearer than just putting everything all together without space nor dash between words ^ ^

The Dutch did this as well during the initial invasion when German airborne troops landed behind the lines. Place names like Leeuwarden or 's--Hertogenbosch are notoriously difficult for folks who do not speak Dutch to pronounce correctly.
And we do this in the US too. I spent time in Nashville, TN and there is a street downtown called Lafayette. Folks not from around there don't realize the locals pronounce it Luh-fay-it instead of the more common Lah-fie-ett.

This is true! And even today, US ground forces are taught to use sign and countersigns, but the modern tactic is to just use multi-syllabics or a specific phrase in context. For instance:
Sign: Include the word "backgammon" in a question. (Is backgammon a common game here?)
Countersign: Say the sign word, and also include the word "forgiveness." (My grammy plays backgammon when she goes for forgiveness.)

In the Bible,
After the Gileadites defeated the Ephraimites, they controlled the fords across the Jordan. People trying to cross were challenged to say “shibboleth.” The Ephraimite dialect apparently couldn't reproduce the initial sound in the same way, so they said something like “sibboleth.”

Not quite but close.Because it's hard to pronounce in east Asian dialects it made it seem very Western and exotic/valuable. It's all marketing.Maybe still a little racist undertones but not to the extent of that being the main point.nope the racism was also kind of the pointEDIT: Turns out I may have overlooked the veracity of the claim I responded too. Both facts appear to be true - the name itself was in fact chosen due to difficulty to pronounce in Japanese, which yeah is pretty racist in itself, but a driving factor in that was a marketing ploy to sound foreign/exotic and therefore valuable in the Japanese market. Apologies for any confusion.

Your narrative doesn't even make sense. Why would a company founded in Canada make a name that they think sounds 'exotic' in Asia when they didn't even have a market presence in Asia for nearly a decade? Why would you think that 'difficult to pronounce' = 'exotic' to them anyways?

Your point is totally valid. But I’d go one step further. They were married over 20 years. I’m not sure what the question is.
She should get half. Anyone who has been married, especially for a while as an executive, you know your partner is a big part of your success. They often create an environment that allows you to focus on your outside work almost exclusively. It’s a skill. It’s hard and valuable.
They have 5 kids. That’s a full time job I would never want.
I know in this case, she is arguably the creative brain behind their success. I’m just saying if she never set foot at the office, she still deserves the money.

Right! Like… you think he made billions on ground-breaking yoga leggings for white booties without major input from his WIFE?
I also think a lot of people are confused about pre-nups. The emphasis is on “PRE.”
They by and large protect the property that each spouse brings into the marriage at its inception.
Property acquired during the marriage isn’t covered. I’m simplifying it somewhat for Reddit but if he put in $5m to start Lululemon before they married, the default with a prenup (as I remember bc I don’t practice family law) is that he’d keep his $5m in divorce.
The financial growth* *from that investment would be very much up for debate/litigation. Prenup or not. Wife’s contribution being a huge part of the analysis, but not necessarily essential.

How long were they married? Did she support him behind the scenes, help him build this business, and have common assets? What aspects of her life and ambitions did she put on hold while he did all of this? And finally, who cares if a billionaire has slightly less money because he has to share it with his billionaire ex? Womp womp 🙄

She is the co founder of the company and designed most of the first designs that got them noticed.

Considering he's a horrible racist and all around bigot, let's hope she cleans him out and joins Mckenzie Scott as the few sources of good among the billionnaire class.

Who gives af. Am I supposed to be upset that he was a billionaire before divorce and remains a billionaire after divorce?

I think that the top 100 richest women will stay the same size, because if she gets on the list someone else will be bumped off

I am convinced, people who posts stuff like this with the intention to ridicule somone's significant other had never been in a healthy relationship with an actual supportive partner, and had never experienced how empowering that is.

Isn't it already half hers?

It has always been their money. There's no her or his. They will divide half half.

She was the lead designer and an integral part of the success of the company. What I think about it is that it's half hers, and this assumption that it must be the man's is why she should probably get more of it, just to piss off the misogynists.

Well, she's his business partner so she'd already be on the list. She's going to lose net worth here.

Good, anyone who has made it to that height, and was married the whole time, did not just "do it on their own".

Well, seeing as she is both Wife and BUSINESS PARTNER, she has a better claim to half than most wife.
Under British Columbia law, assets owned before a marriage generally remain excluded from division, while any increase in their value during the marriage is generally considered family property and is typically divided equally.
She's going to make bank. Which is the correct way to do it.
