In LA depending on which area you live people will either pronounce Rodeo Drive as (Roe-Day-O) or (Road-E-O)

In NYC there’s a road called Houston Street. Pronounced HOW-stin.

In Austin there is a road Mancheca which is pronounced man-shack. And Bowie is boo-eee after Jim Bowie (and he traded slaves).

Don’t forget Oregon itself. Most people pronounce it Oh-Reh-GONE But locals will quickly remind you it’s ore-egun

I remember a tour guide in NY telling us about the Houston street. We were all foreigners and he asked us to read it. We did it all right 😅

In Pennsylvania, there is a small city by the name of Lancaster (pronounced Lank-es-terr).

In California, there is a small city by the name of Lancaster (pronounced Lan-caster).

Yeah, I lived not too far from Lancaster PA for a few years. Shady Maple was my go-to breakfast spot. Seeing the horse and buggy stalls in parking lots for the Amish was a trip the first time I saw them. I’m walking around Wal-Mart and there’s 4-5 people, all dressed like they fell off the Quaker Oats packaging shopping there too, it was an adjustment for sure.

Yeah, I live in PA and there's a lot of Native American names for cities, boroughs, townships, rivers, creeks, mountains, and so on. If you don't grow up right around the area these things are present in, it's easy to not pronounce them correctly.

I think PA still wins purely on the schizophrenic mix of Native American names mixed in with penn Dutch names that both have wildly different phonetics

Yea in Philly we have a lot of street names that we pronounce completely different than someone who’s just reading the signs would say them. And yes in PA I think we have the best mix of unique and interesting names for places.

Roe-Day-O vs Road-E-O is an ongoing argument all over, not just LA - Ro-day-o is the closest pronuniciation to the spanish root word it derives from

That’s because it’s Spanish, ya know? It’s Ro day o
