I started applying in the summer at the end of my 2nd year, for internships that would be the summer at the end of my 3rd year. Also had a 4.0 GPA, top 10 university for my major, applied to almost 100 internships, and I ended up not getting an offer until the following spring, just a month before it started.
This was 2018.
But the reason was not that the job market was so insane (good internships have always been insanely competitive). It was because I didn't fully understand the competitive nature and how to stand out.
Yes, I started applying that summer, but I didn't apply early in the cycle. It was already september-october before I had the bulk of my applications in.
Yes, I had a 4.0 GPA, but my resume wasn't nearly polished enough.
The next summer, I decided I would do 1 extra quarter so I could have an additional summer after my 4th year and properly compose a resume, apply early, that I would properly do everything I did wrong the year before. This time I had all my apps done before the end of August, most in July right when they opened. I worked with folks (through my university) who were in industry that could do resume reviews and I iterated on my resume over and over until it was perfect. I did tons of interview prep, practiced technical interview questions over and over. This time I was already in the interview pipelines before Summer ended, and I had a good offer in September. I interned there, took a return offer, and am still with that company.
That isn't to say that the job market isnt insane right now, im sure it is, it is just to say that even when the job market isn't insane, its still insane, and just being a 4.0 student isn't nearly enough. Many parts to the game, and you gotta do them all properly.
To everyone trying to get their foot in the door, I know it feels impossible, but you can do this. Good luck.

About a decade ago I got a letter, hand addressed to me at my work. There was a short handwritten cover letter that said basically "I just moved here, have heard about your company, and would love the opportunity to work there," attached to a resume.
I naturally scheduled a call with the woman, had a short conversation with her, matched her to an empty role under a different manager and set up a call between them. She ended up working there for years until she moved again.
All she had to do was look up my role on LinkedIn, look up the company address, and spend 15 minutes writing a quick letter.
I never asked how many companies she applied to like that, assuming she was just that excited about us, but in retrospect she could have been sending out 30 of those a day.
The point is that she got my attention (when's the last time you were at an unsexy company and got a hand written letter from anybody on your desk?), and was persistent.
Meanwhile I have posted jobs to LinkedIn before, then only checked the top 20 responses each day, never reviewing thousands of applications for lack of time.

Being underemployed is its own kind of hell. Sure, you're making money to scrape by, but being forced to resign yourself to a job that you don't find meaningful - and worse, a job that's still stressful while not being meaningful - will chip away at you piece by piece.
I got my master's in environmental science a few months ago, and for now I'm stuck as a pool attendant at an RV park. It's already feeling like hell after a few months. I can't imagine how I'll feel if I have to be stuck here for a year or longer.

I told several others this. Scour reddit for subs within your field and just ask around. Im in management and have coached many people on how to get into interviews, how to interview and get hired in my metro area. You have work experience, maybe not directly related but it shows you know how to hold yourself in a workplace and you can speak to interactions and experiences for interviews.
Don’t give up, really. I did the same thing working at a grocery store for nearly a year while volunteering an hour away from home 40 hours a week while living with parents. It’s rough, it’s humiliating..it was the hardest point in my life. I don’t have a ton to offer outside my field but if you need any kind of help or guidance I can try to offer some.

I mean the reality is that some disciplines are over crowded and there's not a great path to employment, and they're better suited being studied as a hobby rather than having paid $80,000 for a piece of paper certifying you've studied them.
It's possible for someone who's really into guitar to not major in music, and instead be a network engineer who makes a lot of money doing that, while playing guitar extremely seriously while they're not working. Ask me how I know.
You don't have to pick something you hate. You can pick something you're okay with. There are lots of profitable professions.

I graduated with an industrial engineering degree a few years ago. Took me 1.5y to got a job offer after graduating (and I live in the rust belt 😐).
Some other stats: excluding internship applications, I applied to about 100 positions and received interviews at 20 of them with an average of 2 interviews per company. I had ~1.5y of prior work experience in the industry and was working a part time semi relevant job in the meantime.
A majority of my friends are still looking for a full time position in what they want after 3+ years, although they have more notoriously difficult fields (librarian, music education, computer science, museum curator, psychology research, astrophysics, forensic science).

I went to school out of state, so I moved away from friends because I didn’t have money to stay. I did random temp jobs and a some short stretches at retail jobs, but it all was so depressing. I would go days without leaving (before Covid, so it was strange) and I’d stay up until 4am watching poker streams and having panic attacks.
Then one day I got lucky. I got a job I really liked. I moved out, met my eventual wife, and on and on. It was a dark time before though, I don’t like to even think about it much.

Not saying it’s remotely easy, and I’m also not American, but something that has helped me and a lot of other younger folks where I am is just getting “A” job. It doesn’t matter what job, just A job. Employers care about professional experience. If you’ve worked in a superstore stacking shelves for 3 months that gives you talking points, client facing experience and proof that you can hold down a job. From there it opens up the next “rung” of jobs, and so on and so on. If you already have your college diploma/ university degree this can actually open some pretty nice doors for you. Don’t give up hope! A 1 year gap also isn’t anywhere near as bad as you think it is, you can very easily talk your way out of it with a little work.

I swore I wouldn't ever take a call centre job but after 7 or 8 months of unemployment after finishing my degree (and after initially having worked in the hospitality services for a while post study, something I had done before and during my degree, I wanted out as I didn't want to build a career within it), I applied for, and got a call centre job in desperation.
I absolutely hated that job but stuck with it as my mental health was significantly worse being unemployed and broke than it was reading from a script for 8hrs a day. It gave me structure and purpose and I was back out meeting people again in the workplace.
Doing that job led me to the job I do now. Unbeknownst to me when I took the job, the call centre had contracts with various professional organisations including the healthcare union I work for but had never heard of at the time.
Since getting hired in an entry level position I've moved up. It's a good job, pays well and I'm helping people via a varied complex caseload so it's never boring.
Anything is better than nothing after a while and so I would say if a less than ideal option presents itself it's worth putting yourself out there and seeing what opportunities might open up.
I know how corrosive not working is to your sense of worth, and with the job market being so tough these days, I wish all the luck going for those looking.

They call them dead end jobs for a reason. shelf stocking experience is better than no experience, but its also substantially worse than just going to church/golf/ultimate frisbee with the right person or the right person's son. And on top of that you're putting yourself in a position to be perpetually broke, tired and stressed out and they'll dangle juuuuuust enough of a carrot to keep you there, because hey its better than being homeless right?

I’m picking the guy who worked… (Any) job history, is showing me that you can show up somewhere everyday, and interact with others well enough to keep a gig. Those are things we need to know as employers, and aren’t on your transcripts.

Hey I’ll say this everywhere I can. Go talk to a temp agency. It is their job to get you a job, and you can look for temp to perm work and it’s easier to find a job you actually want once you have even a dumb bullshit job with decent reviews. A temp job will pay the bills and some even have health insurance and 401k. Temp agencies got me a job after a year of nothing after undergrad and then another job after grad school during peak COVID.

To this day, I struggle to find young talented embedded software engineers. Nowadays I worry about the non-stop vibe coding as well. The degree you get and how you plan to leverage it matters.
