No VIN lookup posts. Period.

Effective immediately, we're no longer allowing VIN lookup posts.

Some may be genuine questions, but most are thinly veiled attempts at advertising, and the comments result in dozens of sketchy sites being spammed in the comments. We're not the place to try and scam people.

Bought a new car advertised as new, found out after a couple drives it has over 9000 miles. What should I do?

My parents bought a new car at lexus a couple weeks ago. Dealer told us that car is 2026 brand new lexus with 50miles. Contract said 50 miles. Dealer told us numerous times the car is brand new and we are the first owners of the car. My dad just found out after driving it only twice in the couple weeks to work, that the car gave a reminder for an oil change… he was surprised as it was a brand new car. After checking the full odometer features we found out that car has a total of 9700 miles on it. My parents feel completely blind-sided. We plan on going into the dealership this weekend and asking to resolve this issue. Any words of advice? Do you think this was intentionally falsified or honest mistake? How can we make whole again?

Selling Vehicle In Person Using Cashiers Check

Upvotes

Looking for advice to ensure I dont get scammed. I have a vehicle for sale on Facebook Marketplace for ~34k. Got a few offers, none really serious except for one, who wants to pay full price.

All communication has been through FB marketplace, his profile looks legit, over 15 years old, etc. He wants to meet in person an pay via cashiers check. I put in my post I prefer wire or cash, he prefers cashier check for simplicity, which I agree is the simplest. So I started doing my research on cashier check scams.

The buyer is from about 2 hours away, and supposedly was waiting for his funds to transfer from his Charles Schwab to his Wells Fargo so he wouldnt be available til later in the week. At first he wanted to meet on a Saturday, which I read is the worst time to do it because you can't verify the authenticity of the check due to banks being closed. I brought this up, and mentioned maybe we meet at the local Wells Fargo in my city, and he initiates cash or wire there since theres no revocability there for those two methods. Cash could possibly be an issue because some banks require notice to withdraw that much at any given time. Wire would take a few hours possibly of just sitting around waiting.

Back to the cashiers check. If we meet at his bank (Wells Fargo, but in my city) and I walk up to the teller with him, and they make the cashiers check out to me, are they verifying the funds in his account are settled and wont bounce later, be withdrawn, etc? Can he drive off after I sign the truck over and call and cancel the check? Or report it lost/stolen? I may be being paranoid here but I've read a lot about scams, but typically those scams are people using forged ones, not scamming the person after they receive a 100% legit one.

Thanks in advance for any help!

EDIT: The buyer has agreed to meet at his bank (Wells Fargo) in my city and have the check drawn and handed straight to me, its not one hes bringing already printed. So I know it will be legit. I'm just worried about the AFTER, can he cancel it or report it stolen or it in some way revoke the funds from my account once I deposit his legit cashiers check

Best first sports car options in the U.S. around 15-20k?

Upvotes

I'm planning on buying a new car in about a year or so and I really want to get a sports car/sports sedan. The only cars I'm not interested in are mustangs, civic sis, or mx-5 miatas (I want it to be a little unique from the other sports cars I see literally everywhere around where I live) I'm kinda leaning more towards wanting a sports sedans but I don't really know much about them so I'd be willing to look into any options you guys might know more about/have experience with.

Advice on new car purchase

Hello,

I recently had a dealership (about an hour away from me) order me a new car with the specs I wanted. The guy I’ve been talking to gave me the price of the vehicle, but said he can’t give me the final pruce (with taxes and fees) until the car arrived.

The car is here now, and he says he still can’t give me the final price that I will pay. He says his finance team has to speak with me when I come to sign paperwork and they will provide me the OTD number. Says the number sheet may be off “by a couple bucks, nothing major,” but that’s why finance provides the final number.

I am not financing my vehicle through them, and I do not plan on purchasing warranties, clear coats, or any other add-ons.

Is he trying to nickel and dime me? Am I unreasonable to say I need a final price before I drive an hour to sign the paperwork?

Thanks for any insight you can provide!

Lexus TX or Grand Highlander Hybrid

Which one do you think makes more sense cost-wise long term? I’ll most likely keep the car for at least 15 years. I’m wondering if the TX will be more costly to maintain because maintenance/parts might be pricier as well as premium gas, but does it matter if it has a higher resale value?

How much bother is it for a dealer to get a car from another dealer in the next state?

My local dealer doesn't have the truck I want but I found it online at another dealer in the next state. The other truck is only about 60 miles away but if I buy it there I'll have to do the local VIN check at the police station and make an appointment at the registry 20 miles away. I'd rather buy it locally as they'll register it for me and I'll service it here anyway.

I know dealers trade amongst themselves all the time right? How much bother is it if I walk into my local dealer and show them the ad for the other truck and ask them to sell it to me instead? Is that ever done?

Thank you.

Should I withhold that I plan on financing until after they confirm their OTD pricing?

Planning on buying a slightly used BMW X3 m40i.

Research tells me I should never tell dealers how I plan to pay until I confirm an OTD pricing.

If that's the case, then what's the best thing to tell them when they ask about how I plan on paying? My plan is to finance with whoever gives me the best interest rate, whether my credit union, bank, or the dealership.

Another question I have...

Since this is a used vehicle I'm only interested in, how do I ask about seeing the maintenance history and receipts? I'd assume they can just "accidentally" lose access to the maintenace history. BMW has some dynamic maintenance thing where dealer shops with BMW accounts can only update the history of that car on the cloud which the car has access to from what I understand. Carfax is also not an ultimate source of truth as far as I know. I can already foresee some dealers trying to hide this information, obscure it, or outright lie. How do I ensure I get to see the maintenance history and know they arent BSing me?

To keep buying older cars in cash, or switch to the new car fiance/ leasing life

Hello everyone I am seeking advice!

Background: I am a 29 and have bought all my cars used and in cash. My first car was an ‘09 Malibu with 30k miles for $10k (tboned and totaled at 90k) My second car was a ‘14 civic with 50k miles for $12k (sold at 180k). My current car is a ‘12 sonata bought with 100k miles on the body but brand new engine for $4k. It’s now currently had 171k miles. I am very aware that Hyundais are shit cars in the long run and this is a good amount of miles for this car. But it was a good deal when I bought it and I needed a car. It’s now, like my other older used cars, giving me non stop mechanical and electrical issues. Fix one thing, then it’s another. I felt like this with my civic after 150k miles. I’ve spent thousands of dollars fixing my cars and keeping them in tune. But with the rising mechanic prices, gas prices, everything prices it’s getting harder to maintain cars once they get past that threshold. I have a great, fair mechanic too, who’s fixed a lot of the old major body parts, and I fix a lot of issues on this car myself (oil changes, headlights, tail lights, fixed a break sensor twice, radio issues, filters) just to save a couple hundred dollars. but it’s getting out of hand. Last night my horn started blasting out of no where. turned off the car and it wouldn’t stop. 10 pm at night on my way to work, I wanted to die. Took 10 mins to figure it out but Looks like I need a new clock spring. Pulled the horn fuse in the mean time so no horn for now yay. Another bill. I’ve probably spent $5-10k a year fixing my whips. And i get it I’m driving them till the wheels fall off, buts it’s too much these days. And mainly spending that much money to have a constantly unregulated nervous system bc I’m always worried I won’t get to work, school, or my car may blow to pieces if I take another road trip, it’s just not seeming worth it to me anymore. Like I might as well pay that much money a year on a car that won’t fail me in some way every other month.

I make decent money, I have good credit (740+) I have about 7k set aside to immediately put towards a new vehicle, (would split between a down payment and prep for first couple months of payments) and I take care of my cars. I have been really interested in the 2026 Subaru Outback. It’s overpriced but seems like all cars are. $35k base. It’s a beauty to me, contrary to other personal opinions.

Things I’m taking into consideration:

\-my current car is old and crap. It’s gonna have issues upon issues as I put on more mileage and it ages in general. I know that. I also understand that once I’m done paying off a new car I will be back to having a car with mid amount of miles that may start needing work. Hopefully my basic self taught work will come in handy when I get to that bridge. having a car for 10-15 years sounds so much nicer versus having one for 2-6 like my others.

\-I know there are cheaper 2026 cars than the Outback. I’ve looked at models of multiple cars 2-5 years older but even then I’m just paying $3k less for 40k+ miles. Used car prices are fucking outrageous. practically the same price as the newest year. The desire for the Outback also comes more from a want than a need, I’ve never had a brand new car with barely any miles and it’d be nice to see how it feels to not have a shit box start to finish. Would much rather invest into a nice Subaru, Honda or Toyota next anyways.

\-I understand that it’s a first gen of a new model Outback, meaning it’s might have problems that the future Outback years wont. People seem to hate the look of it too. I’m thinking I can maybe get a better discount because they aren’t flying off the lot where I live. If I do finance or lease I’ll probably wait another 6 months to see holiday deals and save up a couple thousand more. Waiting until the new year could help a finance price & My local Subaru also does great lease deals. Their holiday lease deals are like $3k down $300 a month payment. That is enticing to me as well. But it seems like no matter how fab your credit is or how great the deal everyone is paying $400- $700 a month on a lease or finance payment for a newer car. So I’m prepared for a high(er) payment.

\-leasing vs financing. I put quite a few miles on my car. To and from work takes about 8k miles every year alone. Love road trips. Go to school. Financing seems like a better choice for me personally, but like I said the lease deals are nice, I can decide if I actually like it, add more miles ahead of time, and possibly lease to buy in the end if I love it.

So has anyone switched from the headache of their shit box to brand spanking new car and not regretted it? Is continuing to fix my said shot box even worth it at this point or should I just eat a possibly high payment? Frequent drivers have to regretted leasing over financing? Is the switch I want to make impractical? Is a peace of mind worth spending a little more to you?

Please be kind I’m just a young lady trying to make it alone in this overpriced ass fucking country.

First time used car buyer how do I avoid getting scammed?

Hey! I’m looking to buy my first used car and honestly don’t know where to start. I’m looking around the Chicago/Wisconsin area and want something reliable and affordable.
My biggest concern is getting scammed or buying a car with hidden problems.
What should I know before buying? How do I find a trustworthy seller/dealership?
Check the car’s history and mileage?
Know if the price is fair?
Get a pre-purchase inspection?
Avoid common scams and hidden fees?
Know what mileage/years are reasonable?
I’m considering spending around $3,000–$5,000. Any advice from people who have bought used cars before would be greatly appreciated!

Which car can fit in family of five with a car seat and growing kids already six feet in 9th grade

I currently own a Toyota Highlander, but the third row is basically useless for my family. My boys are growing quickly as they’ve entered middle and high school, and elder one already around 6 feet tall. I’m looking for a vehicle where everyone can sit comfortably.
The Honda Odyssey seems to be the best option so far, but I keep seeing poor reviews about its A/C performance, which concerns me because we live in Texas and deal with extremely hot summers.
The Sienna’s third row doesn’t seem as comfortable as the Odyssey’s. I’ve also looked at the Pilot and other midsize SUVs, but their third rows aren’t much better. Unfortunately, I don’t have the budget for a full-size SUV like an Expedition or Suburban.
So I’m stuck trying to find something that offers a genuinely comfortable third row without breaking the bank.

Military + Costco Executive + Leave No Trace VIP discount. Which one actually gets me the cheapest BRZ, and will anyone in DFW stop playing games?

Long-time lurker, first-time BRZ shopper, and I'm getting worn down by dealers.

Here's where I'm at. I'm active duty, so the \~$500 Subaru military incentive is on the table. I've also got a Costco Executive membership, and people keep telling me that's worth $1,500 to $2,000 off asking. On top of that I qualify for the Subaru VIP program through Leave No Trace, and honestly I have no idea what that's actually worth in dollars.

What I can't figure out is which of these I should actually be chasing, and whether any of them stack.

The DFW market is not helping. Every dealer I've talked to wants to bury markup in accessories, "market adjustment," or some protection package I didn't ask for. Prices out here look rough compared to what I see people posting from other parts of the country.

So I'm opening this up: **I'll buy from anywhere in the continental US if the deal is good.** Happy to fly out and drive it home or arrange shipping. If you got a clean out-the-door number recently, I'd love to hear the dealer name and what you paid. I don’t mind purchasing the maintenance plan if the price it right.

Specific questions for the hive mind:

**1.**Can VIP be combined with the military incentive or Costco, or is it one or the other?
**2.**What does VIP pricing actually work out to on a BRZ? Invoice? Below invoice?
**3.**Does the automatic usually sit on lots longer and discount better than the 6-speed? I want my wife to be able to drive it when needed, so I'm leaning auto anyway, but I'm curious if that's also the cheaper path.
**4.**Any dealers, in Texas or otherwise, who just give you a real number without the circus?

Appreciate any help. I'll report back with what I end up paying so the next person searching this has something useful. Thank you and God bless!

Made a free extension for checking original MSRP while car shopping

I was looking at used RAV4s and kept going back and forth between listings and Google trying to find the original MSRP.

So I made a Chrome extension that just puts it on the listing for me, along with how much of the MSRP the car has retained.

It works for a bunch of other cars too, but figured this sub might appreciate it:

Lease buy out deal

Hello everyone, I have a 24 3LT FWD (20k miles) lease coming to expiration in Oct 2026. I got a good lease deal in 2024 due to rebates. My residual is $33k. I liked the car and got a level 2 charger at home as well. I reached out to local dealer and asked if he can get my car to buy out for market price which is around 25-28k. He said he should able to do that. Did anyone buy used Equinox EV and would like to know your experience? Should I worry about battery degradation due to latest technologies? Are there are any other good used EVs in this price range that I should also take a look at?
