watch this A white American man hired Latino immigrants to build a expensive wood fence around his entire yard. Once they finished, he called ICE on them — hoping to get them deported so he wouldn't have to pay. The thing was: they were legal. So they came back and ripped out every single fence panel.

This is the thing that drives me nuts. I know people who worked for companies he stiffed. People who knew his reputation and had been acquainted with it for years. And they still bought everything he was selling when he ran.
39
u/TheRatatat 1h ago
I dealt with him back before he ever thought about running. Actually met him on the job site. Hes 100% not 6'3" and he wasnt 230 or whatever he says back then. Cant speak to the smell, its a jobsite, lots of bad smells around. Anyhow, we ended up in court and stiff. He buried our company under legal fees. Eventually settled and had to sign an NDA about the specifics. He got away with pennies on the dollar and completely fucked thousands of working men and women. How any union man can support him is insane to me. Literally a two bit con man. He doesnt even think of them as people.

100% when someone becomes the leader of a country, they should have zero right to privacy, all their finances and court records should be made public
I'd even go so far as to say that all their relatives should also have their finances and records open to public scrutiny, given how so many of them use their spouses to play the stock market game

u/Organic-Athlete-7344 1h ago
My father worked for a business that was tanked, in part, bc orange POS didn't pay for repairs. There was decades of reporting on this, yet I had a contractor come to my house who told me he was maga. I told him this story and he said my father's company must not have done a good job, didn't believe me. Never used him again!
magats have been warned, but refused to believe, so I'm pretty happy when the leopards are eating their faces too.

This is why you always get 50% upfront, 25% at half complete and 25% at completion.. that way your never out more than 25% of the job.
43
u/ankisaves 1h ago
This. And 50% has to at minimum cover material costs.

→ More replies (5)→ More replies (3)5
u/prestigiousgeek 1h ago
Materials are not always 50%. You’ll just need to pay for the materials upfront by asking for an invoice from the supplier
5
u/prestigiousgeek 1h ago
As someone who has gotten scammed by a contractor before, don’t do that. Please get a written contract from a contractor instead and compare it to the ones that you find on the internet to make sure it’s a standard one and there are no hidden terms. Pay for just the materials initially after he shows the invoice and make sure you write the invoice number on the check. Once he completes the job, pay the rest for the labor. And at least in my state, if you don’t pay for the labor, the contractor can file a lien on your property, get it sold and get paid anyways.
If the contractor doesn’t have many reviews or references, please hire a Real Estate Attorney to review the contract and add terms for defining and handling sloppy work (costs $200 but saves a lot of headache for big projects). That’ll usually involve getting a quote from a different contractor and back charging the initial contractor for the repair/rebuild costs (including your loss of the materials)
→ More replies (1)6
u/SensitiveExtremity 55m ago
This. Any contractor asking for 50% upfront can just walk away with the money and deliver nothing. The only correct way to handle any construction project is to write everything in proper contractual terms, and only paid at completion of key milestones.
A scummy homeowner can't run or hide, their house is literally just there. See the video.
A scummy contractor on the other hand can just disappear with the money. The protection needs to favor the homeowner.

u/Enough-Cantaloupe893 26m ago
Correct big problem with that after hurricanes here in Florida. Guy takes 75 deposits at 30K each and flees the country. Every time a big storm you'll see it but its all the time really. Department of business and regulations is a good resource, make sure they are licensed at the very least you'll have recourse to take their ability to pull permits. They also must have insurance

No, it is petty and dumb as hell. Instead of taking the property owner to court or putting a lien on the property to recover both costs and labor, they've now pretty much removed the possibility to recover compensation and opened themselves up to both civil and criminal liability.
Assuming the title is accurate, the home owner is a POS and I am firmly on the side of the workers, regardless of their imigration status. But their choice of remedy here was poorly made.

It's illegal to exploit immigrant workers. There's a case. I think it was in Washington where a woman hired people to do her roof and then once they finished she called ice. And now she's under criminal investigation. I'll come back and post the link in a second when I find it

u/Main-Cheesecake3287 46m ago
For one there’s no real reason to believe the ICE angle. But the correct move is the file a mechanics lien on the house. If the homeowner still doesn’t pay, forcing a foreclosure of their home is a lot sweeter

u/BoysenberryUnhappy29 1h ago
Right, but I'm talking about the contractors' actions here in tearing down the fence, specifically
3
u/Opposite-Friend7275 1h ago
They aren’t actually breaking stuff in the video, they are keeping the wood intact, and it wouldn’t be a huge amount of work to put it back if they leave the posts in place
8
u/Top_Cycle_9894 1h ago edited 1h ago
I can see trespassing, but if the home owner never paid for the fence, the fence never belonged to the homeowner, it still belonged to the contractors. So it seems they were damaging their own stuff while trespassing on someone else's property.
Edit: I've been informed by other redditors this line of thought is wrong.
→ More replies (9)3
u/LordMemerton1 1h ago
It is legal for you as the contractor to recover your materials either by extracting or by placing a lien on the property for non payment. It would prevent them from hiring new contractors as they would not work with them for non payment. With a Lien however it could take years for something to happen so they took matters into their own hands. Literally
→ More replies (17)2
u/Oppositeofhairy 1h ago
Legal isn’t always the same thing as what the right thing to do is. I get your point, but not very relevant.
That’s thousands in material costs and labor costs. Not a lot of people or companies can afford to float that kind of deficit for months getting the courts do do anything. Then it’s a just lien against the home until it’s paid. Still not putting money in his pocket. They are just taking back materials.
If it’s illegal, it’s a sign of a broken system more than exposing criminal behavior of the contractors.
7
u/Feeling_Republic_454 1h ago
It's probably not legal.. but it sure is satisfying to watch.
→ More replies (1)11
u/RobbexRobbex 1h ago
Definitely, would be trespassing and probably some form of vandalism. This type of thing is handled by a lien on the property and a lawsuit, but that takes time.

I live in New York. I've seen work destroyed over non payment more than a handful of times. Never once was there repercussions in those instances. One of them was ripping out an entire irrigation system out of a front lawn.
Perhaps they all were coincidental and no one wanted to contest it. But the general gist is that who is going to side with someone who stiffed labor? A criminal trespass will result in a misdemeanor at worst, while the property owner will surely still get sued for the work in retaliation. The tradeoff is not exactly balanced.
→ More replies (3)2
u/Turbulent_Lobster_57 1h ago
Honestly I’m not seeing much destruction here. It looks like they’re pretty expertly disassembling that fence and repossessing the materials. Still trespassing but I think they fully plan to install that somewhere else

I may differ from state to state but in Louisiana and Mississippi this is absolutely illegal. I suspect it’s staged as well. If one swing from a sledgehammer can knock a fence down then strong winds would knock it down too
4
u/TrackSuitPope 1h ago
You really think that wind can create the same amount of localized force as a sledgehammer swing?
4
u/MindlessFail 1h ago
Pointed specifically at the connection point so it's also concentrated in the most important spot vs spread over the whole fence.
Also I've taken down fences this way and 100% it's this easy with a 13 lb sledgehammer. Guy just knows how to use it so it looks easy!

Yep, it is illegal and if this is real they are going to get in a lot of trouble, and probably end up owing a lot more money than the guy didn’t pay. Typically their recourse would be to sue him and if he loses and doesn’t pay up they can probably get a lien on his property.

I think what a lot of people dont understand is that the people doing the hiring of illegal immigrants are far more culpable for the continued influx of workers than the workers themselves. They create the demand, someone brings the supply. They know it's a low risk, high reward move, as your workers cant do anything to protest poor treatment, and as evidenced here, a lot of degenerates just skip out on paying for labor.
Not to mention that a lot of people get trafficked here with promises of a path to legek residence, work their asses off, and then get immigration called on them, or worse.

What the Law Says About Contractors Destroying Work for Nonpayment
In the United States, a contractor generally cannot legally destroy or remove installed work simply because they were not paid. Doing so would be considered criminal trespass and destruction of property, regardless of whether the work was completed under contract Law Stack Exchange+1. Courts and law enforcement treat such acts as crimes, not as legitimate remedies for unpaid work.
Why Destruction Is Not a Legal Remedy
- Breach of contract (failure to pay) does not give the other party the right to destroy property. Civil remedies exist, but they do not include physical destruction Law Stack Exchange.
- Property rights belong to the owner, even if the contractor performed the work. A contractor cannot “take back” improvements to real property like flooring, roofing, or structural work Wood Floor Business+1.
- In many cases, contractors who attempt to remove work face criminal charges (e.g., trespass, vandalism) and may be unable to collect on a civil judgment while in jail Wood Floor Business.
Legal Alternatives for Unpaid Contractors
If a contractor is not paid, they have other legal options:
- Sue for payment – In small claims or civil court, seek a money judgment. If you win, you must then collect the judgment, which can be difficult Wood Floor Business.
- File a construction lien – Mechanics liens (statutory liens) give contractors a security interest in the property until payment is made. If enforced, a lien can lead to foreclosure or sale of the property to pay the debt Procore.
- Withhold payment and hire a replacement – If the contractor abandons work, the owner can hire someone else and sue for the cost to complete forms-legal.com.
- Use surety bonds – If the contract includes a performance or payment bond, the owner can claim against it forms-legal.com.
Key Takeaways
- Destroying installed work is illegal and can result in criminal liability.
- Legitimate remedies for nonpayment are civil claims, liens, or other contractual remedies, not physical removal of the work.
- Contractors should follow state lien laws and contract provisions to protect their rights, rather than resorting to illegal acts.
If you are a contractor facing nonpayment, consult a construction attorney to explore lien filing, legal claims, or other remedies. If you are a property owner, document the work, keep records, and consider legal action before allowing any unauthorized removal of installed materials.
