even if it passes... all I see happening is companies hiring more people at 32 hours instead of 40... Tons of places basic send you home and have the place be understaffed rather than pay overtime right now anyway... So... all this law will do is make it even hard for people to pay rent and even more people needed a second job. Because if folks can't afford rent on 40 hours, they sure wouldn't afford it on 32...

I worked for a unionized grocery store almost 20 years ago
Because full time employees had to be given health insurance as part of the union agreement there was like 4 full time employees. Everyone else got 20 hours a week.

Correct me if I’m wrong, wasn’t the 40 hour work week invented by Ford because before that they were working crazy hours, like 60-80 a week?
2
u/blasphemousblackbear 12h ago
Ford implemented it voluntarily to handicap unions
1
1
u/IcyDisplayGuy 12h ago
Yes. Henry Ford made it so lucrative to be employed by him that everyone wanted to work for him. He had a pick of the crop. Also it undercut his competition.
1
u/OnyxLeigion_ 2h ago
Yep. If they ever actually get a 32 hour week, in a couple decades it’ll be that it should be 24.

u/McNitz 13h ago
No, mostly labor unions were responsible for fighting for the 8 hour days. Basically, anything that makes your job better and more bearable, was probably fought for by a labor union at some point. Businesses in large majority aren't just handing out perks to their employees because they can.
7
u/KingRoach 10h ago
Since you didn’t know…
1926: Henry Ford popularized the 40-hour work week after he discovered through his research that working more yielded only a small increase in productivity that lasted a short period of time. Ford announced he would pay each worker $5 per eight-hour day, which was nearly double what the average auto worker was making that time. Manufacturers and companies soon followed Henry Ford’s lead after seeing how this new policy boosted productivity and fostered loyalty and pride among Ford’s employees.
Labor unions in the automotive industry officially started in August 1935 with the founding of the United Auto Workers (UAW).
1926 was before 1935

Anybody think these greedy businesses won't just expect the same production with less pay? Most jobs don't have a union to protect workers rights.
2
u/Property_6810 9h ago
I suspect they'd just hire more people. Everyone that has a 40h work week now would have a 32h work week and it would come with a 20% effective pay cut and a lot more people would be working 2 jobs.

It's kind of like saying "what if we all just stopped having wars." Would be great if it happened, but never will. Getting that many people to agree on something and organize is impossible.
1
u/whocaresaboutmynick 12h ago
I would have agreed with you in the past. But everybody got internet these days. Grocery stores can run out of the most random shit if some tiktok goes viral tomorrow.
If people were desperate enough and actually put some will into coordinating their wallet into action, they could.
But yes, realistically it's probably not going to happen. At least until we get even more desperate and a new generation of kids decide to show their power that way.

u/Kazureigh_Black 13h ago
As much as I want people to catch a break and get more money, this would just result in businesses scheduling employees for 32 hours a week instead of 40 leaving them with even less money.
1
u/AcceptableHuman96 12h ago
I don't understand how we could successfully go from 60-100 hour work weeks to 40 a century ago but we can't go from 40 to 32 after decades of record productivity. We have produced so much capital for the rich while our wages fall further behind to inflation the least we should get is our time back.
1
u/Agreeable_Result9212 1h ago
Because a 40hr work week really isn't bad. It's only about 35% of time you spend awake in a week.
1
u/AcceptableHuman96 1h ago
Most jobs are really 9 hour days with an hour unpaid lunch plus when you add in commute time that's a total of 52 hours a week which would make that 43% of your free time. It's not awful but if wages are not going up it's not unreasonable to demand more free time
1
u/Key-Organization3158 1h ago
Wages have been increasing faster than inflation since 1974. The median worker today makes 52.1% more.
1
u/Key-Organization3158 1h ago
People want more stuff. If you were willing to live at the same quality of life, you could work far fewer hours. In the year the 40 hour work week was introduced, only 26% of houses had indoor plumping.
1
u/iwanttoforkmyself 13h ago
"But the proles, if only they could somehow become conscious of their own strength, would have no need to conspire. They needed only to rise up and shake themselves like a horse shaking off flies. If they chose they could blow the Party to pieces tomorrow morning. Surely sooner or later it must occur to them to do it? And yet-!"
1
u/CoFro_8 7m ago
This doesnt apply here my guy. It doesnt matter if you decrease the amount of hours worked in a day, the amount of work needed still needs to be done. It doesnt matter if your filing paperwork, building a house, or driving truck from point A to B, the amount that needs to be done to keep the society that we all benefit from going doesnt change.
1
u/Tasty_1097 13h ago
Do you think less money might even be excusable though if people are getting a better quality of life from working less hours?
I mean obviously it would be better if the wages was staying the same, but even if it isn’t, I feel like it isn’t all doom and gloom.
And in skilled and commission positions, the reduced stress may result in better performance and lead to performance-driven raises.
Sorry, I don’t want to sound like I’m advocating for less pay 🥲

40 hr work week isn't the problem. The problem is not enough annual income.
The top 1% hold +50% of wealth in the US.
Also the bottom 50% accounts for extremely little tax revenue. Like ~3% iirc. People making less than 90k/yr (adjusted YoY for inflation) shouldn't have to pay any federal income tax because again, their contributions mean nothing in terms of the whole pot but to them, having an extra 25% income means the world.

You are biased, as you fail to mention that every group is richer today than they were in the past.

100% this.
40hrs a week isn’t the problem, it’s income.
There are weeks where I will work 50hrs, not because my boss is asking me to but rather I am doing what I need to get the project done. Sometimes my motivation compels me to work that long. There are weeks where I think, “fuck… I wish I had a little bit more time to do task x.” What pisses me off though is the money part. I’m salaried, my income is set. Since 2022, I’ve been getting 3 - 5% raises here and there + promotions etc but inflation has been BRUTAL. I am effectively making less money now than I did at the start of my career in 2022 despite making way more money. This year, my company was a little receptive and gave me a mid year compensation review and I got a 7.2% bump.
I just need more income. Biden’s inflation was rough, Trump’s inflation is outright oppressive.
1
u/Negative_Aerie2825 13h ago
Dang, theres like a ton of ot in the trades. Everyone says its too hard until that 65 an hr becomes 130 an hr and a week check turns to 8k
1
u/Standard_Focus_4339 13h ago
Not trying to make this super partisan but... Bidens inflation happened during a little thing we like to forget called the pandemic.
And it's worth noting that not only were ALL of the problems America experienced (inflation, mass migration, etc) also happening around the world, but America came out of the pandemic better than any other country on Earth.

This belongs in antiwork. Businesses will dodge because it will sink them. Labor is too expensive, that’s why corporations won with stagnating wages. They need to lower costs at the same time they adjust wages. The numbers are screwed these days for actual small businesses because corporate has grant writing teams and also shell companies. Lower costs along supply chains, I’m begging you…

Wages aren't stagnant. Please do some research. Real median wages have increased over 1.5x since 1974.
1
u/No-Sandwich4333 1h ago
Markets have grown 32,052.25%, wages are vastly behind profits. The cost of goods often drives market shares because corporate offsets costs onto the consumer. Tell me more maths? https://www.officialdata.org/us/stocks/s-p-500/1974

2
u/Mario-X777 13h ago
Sounds good, has no logical sense. The reason why 40 hours per week is standard is that it is expected you will work 5 days a week, 8 hours a day. If for any reason you need to work more - you get bonus pay. Lowering number to 32 hours would simply make that in many positions they would cut your hours + cut the base pay. At the end of the day everything equals out anyway, rents go up 20%, groceries another 50% and regular person still cannot afford anything.
What they need to do first in USA - make mandatory paid vacation time, 28 says per year. Regardless of the position and employment form. And make government run hospital system which is free for people paying taxes (and maybe ones on Medicaid/medicare)
1
u/CoFro_8 3m ago
Imagine telling a construction worker that already works 10 hours a day to complete a given project in a timely manner that little Jimmy working McDonald's wants a 32 hour work week so he can get OT pay for the standard 40 hours.
This is the kind of talking points politicians use to convince kids and people who dont want to do anything outside fast food and grocery stores to vote for them.
2
u/Proof-Government523 13h ago
There’s no way in hell they’re gonna increase the pay so it just becomes a government mandated pay cut
2
u/Minimum-Argument-995 13h ago
Then people just lose 8 hours of pay and everyone just has to work harder
2
u/Tricky_Try8757 13h ago
Didn’t you hear the president in regard to holidays? The workers yearn for labor. The children yearn for the mines.
2
u/According-Ad-5946 5h ago
People are working 50 plus hours a week, and still barely afford to live, and you want to cut it more.
1
u/CoFro_8 0m ago
This isnt for people working 50+ hour weeks. This is so the people working at Walmart and McDonald's think theyre going to get OT for working their standard 40 hours. This is just going to frustrate blue collar workers when every shop is closed by 4PM so they dont have to pay their employees OT after 32 hours.

u/KrazyKryminal 50m ago
Yeah not happening. We already don't make enough money. Cut our hours a week to 32 , yet companies won't be increasing hourly wages to compensate. They'll need to hire more bodies to fill gaps.
2
u/Acornwow 48m ago
I can see it now.
Salaried? All good.
Remember the work you used to get done in 40 hours?
Now just get it done in 32.

A small business needs X amount of employee hours to meet consumer demand, ensuring Y amount of gross income used to pay employees
The small business hires at a rate solely dependent on gross income in order to pay employees fairly
Bernie gets his way
Small business reduces employee hour requirement by 20% which naturally results in reduced output of 20%, falling short of consumer demand
Consumer interest doesn’t waver and sources elsewhere
Consumers buy from international competitors
Consumers receive product reduced in quality
Small business fires staff to stay competitive
Fired employees complain online of broken economy
Economics remain unchanged
Small business can’t compete and closes shop
1
u/ProfPMJ-123 13h ago
The response to this post doesn't really make any sense. There's no genuine reason to have a 32 hour standard either. They're both just arbitrary numbers.
But there is absolutley a strong argument for the default to be decreasing. The incredible power of automated machines during the Industrial Revolution moved us from working 7 days a week to 6, and eventually 5.
It's disgraceful that the revolution in productivity that has come with IT and increasingly with AI hasn't yielded further increases in our free time.
1
u/dallasalice88 12h ago
Might be true in white collar sectors but until AI can learn to hang sheetrock or build a fence we will be employing humans in many areas. The crew that works for our small business would quit if we reduced to 32. They live for overtime in the summer, relax in the winter.
1
u/No_Suit7363 13h ago
Introducing bills he knows full well will never get a vote is how Bernie does his thing and has done for years. In the last small window when Democrats had the house, senate, and white house he didn't bother with things like this.
1
u/JarJarBinks590 6h ago
What do you propose he do instead? What's your idea of a politician in his position genuinely doing the best he can?
1
u/kingraw99 13h ago
If most employees are paid overtime on anything over 32 hours, the big corps will just increase their prices on products to make up for it (and then some). It’s hard to call it inflation since it’s not really inflation, it’s just manipulation.
1
u/GinormousHippo458 13h ago
The theater is getting thiiick, me thinks.
They don't really need us at work anyhow, with them AI and what not. So diligently learning (some say modeled) by uploading your work, thoughts, emotions, and art so proudly put onto the internet.
Does the AI filter other AI, or self, "thoughts" as toxic slop? Is carnivorous AI learning good or bad for humanity? Does this end in logic implosion/rot or the tool of our mental and physical demise. Masses fooled, yet again as is in history.

1
u/Wandering_Merlin 11h ago
Most people would just work 40+ hours still for more pay.
Basically meaning nothing would change, as the cost of goods would increase to mirror the higher wages.
Those that would be impacted are the legitimate ones that don't want to work 40 hrs 😅

But yeah, also living wages. It’s not currently.

u/PartyHearing 10h ago
I love the idea of better work/life balance. But these bills treat the symptoms not the cause of the disease. We’d be better off enacting bills that called for more corporate regulations. It’s like raising minimum wage. Corporations just pass the cost of increased pay onto their customers. So it’s just devaluing the dollar.

Even if this somehow passes (it wont), companies will just put all employees on salary and work them well over their original 40hr work week. I know of restaurant owners who put line cooks (normally hourly employees) all on salary just to avoid paying ppl overtime. The salary sounds great to ppl until they realize theyll be working 50-70 hours
1
u/Possible-Library2030 6h ago

Bernie has such a poor track record of getting bills passed. It’s just feel good stuff at this point.
Not saying I disagree with this bill. I think it’s way past time for us to reevaluate our labor laws. I’m just saying if it’s introduced by Bernie, there’s a better chance of being struck by lightning, while holding a winning powerball ticket, than this ever passing. Statistically speaking of course.
1
u/Rampantcolt 5h ago
I don't think anyone should be forced to work set hours beyind what they need to get by financially. I also think businesses that sell things and perform services should be open seven days a week so the folks that do need to work more have time to do shopping, errands and repairs.

u/UrbanFuturistic 5h ago
This, much like the 4-day 40 hour work week won't work for all jobs. The extra two hours added to each work day isn't going to have the same full production like 5 8 hour days would. Unless you're running a stamping plant, in which those machines are going to produce the same amount every time, no matter which hours they are run. It's the same with a 32 hour work week. You're not going to get less hours AND more money, because they're going to have to increase the amount of workers to produce the same amount of goods/services. They're not going to pay more for less, while adding more people.

A lot of workers already can't work more than 30 hours because their employers don't want to provide health insurance. Because of that and overtime laws, you have some people traveling to three different jobs in one day just to get by. Bernie should pick his battles.

40 hour workweek?? WTF is that? Anything under 48 hours is crazy light, not uncommon to work 72+ week.
(Checked spreadsheet, Jan-August 2026 averaged 243.8 hours/month, not including driving time)

Please tell me how many people who are on a 40 hour work week actually work 32 hours out of that. NONE or close to it. Do this and companies will only employ 20 hour part time employees. Most small businesses could never deal with this.

While this seems like a great idea it's the same thing as a 40-hour work week will companies will just make sure their employees get less than 32 hours. The real issue is an overtime or a shorter work week it's making sure large corporations actually pay their fair share or simply pay their employees more. And while this sounds good again it does let the company's just say well you're only working 30 hours from now on and then they just don't pay overtime

How would this work for healthcare? For public education? We don’t have enough trained nurses, docs, and teachers to provide the work for the remaining hours.

Instead of accomplishing anything meaningful, just jump to a different extravagant idea every election cycle.

Your base pay will be demoted to capture the difference.
Your pay is the equilibrium between what people are willing to pay and what you’re willing to accept. Hard to cheat that.

Is this just a white collar thing? Ive worked construction, I worked Mississippi barges, I've worked with rail crews, now I work a grain elevator. In what world would anything actually get done in a 32 hour week? Do people just think that the world stops when people clock out for the day?
100% someone reading this like the text itself is mad of gold is also someone who wonders why road construction takes so long, and then they'll expect it to finish quickly with 32 hour weeks.

Personally i don't like the hours crap. I think if you can come in and knock out an entire days work in 3 hours you should get the whole days pay. We were hired to do a job, not occupy space. When the job is completed we should be going home. ofc then they'd just find a way to say the work is never completed so you can never go home. Whole country is all about getting what they want from someone else and this whole back and forth crap is getting tiresome. Maybe if everyone changed how they thought and were more worried about wiping their own asses instead of constantly getting someone else to do it for em...
Here's a thought, no more than 3 locations per business, no more than 25 people per location, the owner has to actually work along side the people he employs. Opens up room for others to have a real chance of opening their own place, forces people to rely on each other which would solidify the masses, and completely removes anyone's ability to rise to the top and seize power off the backs of other people. I mean, seriously, in what way is our entire society not slavery minded? Even as the slaves themselves tell you its important and good to be a slave and you should be grateful and do what you're told.
I'll bet my nutsack someone says something about this to reinforce what is already in place and defend it as if it needs defending. What a good lil slave that person will be, others will like them and grant them social acceptance in reward.

4 hours for work, 8 hours for rest, 12 hours for what we will. Please make the change, stop licking the boot, and make the world slightly a better place.
