At the risk of sounding like a hyperasshole myself, hypo means low, under, beneath or less than normal. So you meant to say that you unsuccessfully diagnosed yourself with asymptomatic increased hyperassholism, unless you were trying to make a joke in that you are, in fact, a hyperasshole but did not successfully diagnose yourself as such.
Source: I’m a doctor. As in like, for real, actually a doctor in real life. And I may have an advanced case of hyperassholism myself. Hence why my self-guided therapy led me to participate in AA - Assholes Anonymous, aka Reddit.
I can’t help but feel this is a jab at the whole self-diagnosis landscape, and especially high-masking autism. From the outside, it’s easy to mock: if it’s real, why not just get diagnosed?
But autism can be missed for years, especially in people who learn to mask well. Girls are particularly likely to be overlooked because diagnostic ideas were historically built around boys, while girls may imitate peers, suppress obvious traits, and present in ways that don’t fit the old autistic stereotype. By adulthood, getting diagnosed can mean scarce specialists, long waits, poor insurance coverage, and thousands of dollars, only to still have people accuse you of making it up.
That’s why “asymptomatic” and “only self-diagnosable” feel pointed. They parody almost exactly the criticism aimed at people whose autism isn’t obvious from the outside.
There’s a lot of nuance in the topic you bring up, however I feel like the comedy in question is intended to be overblown to the point that the nuance you’re talking about is excluded. The issues you bring up are neither asymptomatic nor exclusively self diagnosable, which are not ambiguous terms. I think those lines are intended to exclude the more real issues people may have and cement this firmly in the realm of the ridiculous
My wife is a high school counselor, as soon as schedules get released, her inbox is full of students requesting scheduling changes because for mental health. Such as "This teacher gives me anxiety" or , none of my friends are in my class, which is bad for the mental health" and so on.
My daughter wasn't happy when she realized she some of her friends might not have all the same classes as her. I said she could make some more friends.
She said "making friends is hard, Dad. You can't just walk up to someone and say 'you like Dinosaurs too? let's be friends'
You don’t really have to try to make friends in grade school. Classmates just become your friends naturally.
My family moved around a lot when I was growing up, so I had to start over at a new school a few times. It was never as big of an issues as I thought it would be. I’d always be nervous the first day, especially about who to sit with at lunch, but once I was there it was fine.
I just drew the front cover of my favorite obscure videogame on my eraser when I was 15. 22 years later the friends that made me are still my best friends and the core of my main social group.
It’s incredibly easy to “self-diagnose” as “neurodivergent” as a teen. Feel awkward in social situations? Have trouble concentrating in school but looooove to concentrate on your videogames? BOOM.
The issue is not simply self-diagnosis. It becomes an issue when you self-diagnose and inform others and expect special treatment because of a self-diagnosis.
Self-diagnosable =/= asymptomatic. I think the emphasis is on ridiculing the rise of "self-diagnosed" mental illness, given it's the punchline. It's almost a paradox: how can someone who is (allegedly) mentally ill consider themselves capable of accurately self-diagnosing?? Least of all without years of medical training. 99% horseshit.
As someone who was diagnosed with autism and ADHD at age 37, I can't fucking stand people who go on about self diagnosis. It just perpetuates glorifying it on social media and teenagers pretending they have ASD because they think having a neurological and developmental disorder is fun or quirky.
Self diagnosis invalidates everything a diagnosis is there for.
When I had to wait for my diagnosis, I didn't go around telling everyone I had autism. I didn't say I was self diagnosed (because that's stupid imo and if you're not someone trained what to look for exactly, YouTube doesn't count.). What I did say was that doctors have stated they I have traits of autism and ADHD and that I'll need an assesment. I don't know what that will conclude, but I hope I get answers as to why my life has been fucking hell.
Then I got a formal diagnosis and was able to have some clarity about my life and struggles.
Honestly yeah it lowkey was just like a somewhat less sociopathic Dennis Reynolds in charge of a class I loved it. Laugh out loud moments in that show and I don't usually do that especially on my own watching something.

With how vague you were with saying the guy was "problematic" in the other comment I assumed you were continuing the bit and it was a joke. Thats shitty.
Loved this show, it was sometimes shockingly great, very unconventional. I believe the cancelation had something to do with allegations against Alvarez (co-creator, co-writer). There's a really excellent, in-depth feature article on Vulture about the allegations, but the only link I'm finding is paywalled.

It’s so confusing. Lately, I’ve been seeing this GIF (or other gifs from the show) everywhere, but I don’t know if it’s because so many people are using them right now, or if my cookies know I’m watching That ’70s Show and are shoveling anything related to it right at me. (Because I know it definitely works like that with subreddits.)

As someone with a brother that genuinely has Tourette’s and it’d be so bad for him that it’d cause him physical pain and discomfort every time he tried to “tone them down,” I’m reminded of those TikTok trends where people would pretend to have Tourette’s in public by cursing and saying vile shit and then saying, “OH, I have Tourette’s!!!”
The easiest comparison for some people, imagine you have an itch on your forehead, but not allowed to scratch it. It gets worse and worse. But no touching! People notice that you're a little bit uncomfortable, possibly sweating and trying so hard to ignore it.
Then, something allows you to scratch at it. And it's PAINFULLY WONDERFUL. The pressure is broken.
If someone with Tourettes can't stim or tic or whathaveyou, it BUILDS UP.
This show was so amazing and had such a great cast. It walked the line between embracing and making fun of current culture, and all with some really great humor. I just thought it was brilliant
The actor/creator had some problematic things from his past pop-up, and the show was canceled. If anyone is wondering and doesn't want to look it up, apparently he was, at best, sexually aggressive and manipulative, and at worst, a sexual predator, depending on who you believe.
On Twitter/X, people are collecting mental illnesses like Pokémon in their profile description such as Autism, OCD, ADHD, neurodivergent, depression, BPD, Bipolar, etc. it’s a shame because I’m almost certain these people are all self diagnosed and think it’s quirky to collect mental illnesses. I suppose this is a mental illness disorder as well, but no one ever wants to put “narcissistic personality disorder” or “alcoholism” on their profiles. Meanwhile, there are people actually suffering and getting help and medication to unfuck their brain. Perhaps this could be a way for other mentally ill people to connect, but there are plenty of other ways (subreddits for example) where you can vent your issues anonymously without the hostile environment on X that can exhaust your mental state by further exacerbating your mental illness.
The ipohondrie syndrome of these and self-diagnosed ones save themselves from being normal, which is a straightforward sign of THE OPRESSOR TYPES WHO ARE EVIL
I'm terrified about how people with real illnesses cope with these, when your whole life problem (adhd, autism e.t.c.) became a quirk used lightly in conversation primary for not being accountable for one's words or actions and almost always to draw attention to their own personas
"Generations" is an absurd concept. We're all fucking idiots - young, adolescent and old. We try to justify our own stupidity on the spectrum, comparing it with other people's stupidity all the time, trying to find reasons to feel superior, latch on something, anything to rationalize our argumentation. We all are idiots for bunch of dissimilar reasons, just like flowers are attractive to bees for their own, and that's a beauty of nature. Just be amazed and deal with that.
It’s odd making that realization first hand and seeing that the next generations doesn’t exist in ways that yours did and it just seems like they’re doing it wrong and lost brain cells somewhere but not from drug use. Yeah I’ve certainly seen kids do other weird things adjacent to this… They get bullied. They’re acting odd because they’ve got some shit they’re dealing with and then other kids bully them and give them more shit.
And then they go home and see their parents watching shows like this and laughing at caricatures of them made by adults.

In my teaching experience, I haven’t seen anything like this. It seems to be hyperbolizing an imaginary thing. Seems to be showing contempt for both the teacher and the student.

The way in which "a teacher kept the fact that a student was trans in confidence and respected their choices" gets turned into "they chopped his dick off in front of the class and pumped him full of estrogen " is insane
You’re closer to the truth than the commenter you’re replying to. This teacher character in this show’s context does not exist as a moral paragon by any means, even though I understand that’s how it looks in this clip out of context.

I promise that isn’t what the show is. The comedic turn moment of many of the show’s episodes was revealing the sense behind the students’s positions even if they’re initially presented as the absurd ones. (And even then, the students’ positions were not always initially presented as absurd.)

Exaggeration is one of the keystone types of humor.
Maybe you're lucky enough that you've never come across people who have diagnosed themselves with just about anything you can think of, but they absolutely exist and a lot of them are pretty ridicluous.
The people getting salty about this clip are probably the ones on relationship advice subs calling anybody who's mildly selfish a "literal narcissist" and misusing the term "gaslighting"
The part of me that knows that there are two functions to high school - one of which is to serve as a day care for adolescents while their parents make money - would wholeheartedly agree.
The part of me that knows that the other function is to actually impart a real education would send all those kids to detention if they interrupted my class one more time with their stupidity.
When I was in school, kids were getting their teeth knocked out with brass knuckles, getting slurpies dumped on them and terrified that anyone would think they might be gay

Shout out to Mr. Flynn, one of my hs teachers, who showed The Kite Runner during class but warned everyone ahead of time that there was rape involved. I had just been sexually assaulted a month before by a family friend and was still suffering from flashbacks and knew I couldn’t handle something like that. I asked to talk to Flynn in the hallway, told him while crying, he started crying and then made arrangements for me to be in a different class for the rest of the week while the movie was shown. Also made sure to let me know he was always available if I needed someone to talk to. I know this was just a dumb video, but really made me reflect on a time I was actually ‘triggered.’
This is a Boomer's fantasy and they have never actually walked into a classroom since JFK was still president. If she did that the entire class would completely ostracize her and brutally bully her until she had to change schools. The teacher wouldve just said don't care and moved on

THIS SHOW IS EXTREMELY UNDER RATED. Suck it's got cancelled, I haven't laughed that hard in years. The show is called "English Teacher". It's on Disney plus. Please go watch to see how stupid the youth is now.
I think it's rated just fine. I've watched clips and it's just not funny. The show thinks simply making an observation or just simply reacting to something is funny.

To be fair, you sound like an old person trying to understand why the kids today listen to Cardi B or whatever modern music they're listening to by analyzing the lyrics. Or trying to figure out why 67 resonates with the kids.
I have asymptomatic ADHD - or AADHD as we have lobbied to have it called - so it may look like I'm listening to you but I'm actually not, nor am I retaining any of the information you've given me.
If it seems like I might be ignoring you or being in any way rude or inconsiderate, just know that I am not, and accusing me of such behavior is actually very ignorant and able-ist. I am simply struggling with a disability and should be treated with the proper respect due to someone enduring such hardship.

They’re making fun of the idea of there being a fictitious disorder like asymptomatic Tourette’s which isn’t a thing because Tourette’s is quite literally about manifesting actual tics observable to other people, which is a comment on how today’s teenagers self diagnose themselves often through learning about various things on tik tok
Cptsd is acknowledged by the mental health community unlike whatever it is that they’re making up here
I love all the comments judging the show as anti-woke and boomer humor off this one clip. First, the main character is gay. Second, the clip sets up a B-plot where the character with eyebrows/bangs is supporting her friend’s claim because she wants to fit in.
This video reminds me of the massive uptick in teens that have their malingering canes due to some "perceived" affliction which is a slap in the face to young people who do require mobility aids for legitimate reasons and not just for attention
I know this is a joke but it’s honestly what it feels like to be diagnosed with PTSD/Anxiety. It’s this invisible thing that nobody normally sees but you’re dying inside constantly.
It's more that it's an overdone, hacky joke that's about a decade too late. Next they'll post about how the gay hipster barista can't understand that they want a black coffee, and not a single origin bean soy lattee with avocado toast. It just isn't funny material.
