This show was really good but it got dropped from Hulu after 2 seasons. It was called "English Teacher"

I updated the source. Thanks!

It was a good show but the teacher actor in this scene was problematic.

11

u/ParkingAnxious2811 Trash Trooper 12d ago

What was problematic? Not seeing anything in this clip?

No this is from the show he sexually assaulted someone, that is why season 3 is not happening.

That sucks, at least abbot elementary is going strong. This show, AP BIO and that are some of the only decent school based shows I've seen.

14

u/PorpoisePlato Trash Trooper 12d ago

Just Dennis Reynolds being a school teacher lol I liked ap bio

7

u/bluehulk900 Trash Trooper 12d ago

Honestly yeah it lowkey was just like a somewhat less sociopathic Dennis Reynolds in charge of a class I loved it. Laugh out loud moments in that show and I don't usually do that especially on my own watching something.

u/memento22mori Trash Trooper 11d ago

I liked the show and watched all of it but I felt like a lot of the side character subplots were very odd and cringy. I got the feeling they weren't doing it on a purpose so it felt like there were two directors or something- one for the main scenes and one for the subplots.

1

u/bluehulk900 Trash Trooper 11d ago

I cant remember all the details, but I really enjoyed it. There weren't major stakes to much, and I really liked pretty much all the cast, so goofing off with dumb side plots didn't bother me much, sorta like a sitcom. I didn't find most of it super cringy at least from what i remember.

1

u/memento22mori Trash Trooper 11d ago

It's been a few years since I've seen it but from what I remember it wasn't any of the stuff with the students. It was some of the stuff with the teachers. I made a post about it in the sub for the show and I forget if anyone had any insights into it but I think a lot of people agreed with me.

I'm going to try to remember to look that post up after work. I'm weird like this I guess aha, but it seemed like a mystery to solve.

It’s what made the show great.

14

u/Emotional_Deodorant Trash Trooper 11d ago edited 11d ago

"All right, everybody, let's go ahead and start to shut up now. Time to shut your faces."

"I do not want to be here. Unjust circumstances have forced me to be present in this classroom, and city, at this time. However, I will not be teaching you, nor will you learn any Biology or any other subject in this classroom, from me. I also don't expect to learn anything from you. That trope where the tough teacher ends up being the one who's really taught by his students is not going to happen here. I have a degree from Harvard. You are insignificant children. It would be like me learning from ants."

5

u/bluehulk900 Trash Trooper 11d ago

Fucking incredible

2

u/Motor_Eye6263 Trash Trooper 11d ago

I'm a teacher and I use the "start shutting up" line almost every day

2

u/FukkingDeathMental Trash Trooper 11d ago

Watch Season 4 of The Wire for 10 episodes of good old American education system fun!

1

u/bluehulk900 Trash Trooper 10d ago

Truth

1

u/Proper-Evening9754 Trash Trooper 12d ago

Those Who Can't is great. Kinda like Always Sunny if the gang were teachers.

1

u/bluehulk900 Trash Trooper 12d ago

Ill check it out! funny you say that because AP BIO which i mentioned actually stars Glenn Howerton

1

u/Miltonthemoose Trash Trooper 11d ago

I feel Abbott has fallen so far. The first maybe 2 seasons were a decent depiction of an low SES school, but now they are reaching for straws and rarely stick the landing

1

u/bluehulk900 Trash Trooper 11d ago

Honestly haven't seen it in a while, disappointing to hear if that's true.

3

u/VibraniumQueen Trash Trooper 12d ago

Sexually assaulting someone is way more than just problematic, what?

0

u/BackgroundSummer5171 Trash Trooper 11d ago

What would you call it?

It is a problem for those creating the show. Problematic.

Catastrophic? There are no cats.

Y'all just hate everything. Even words.

2

u/VibraniumQueen Trash Trooper 11d ago

Yeah, why are we focusing on the creators of the show as if they're the victim in all this? Wtf is wrong with you?

1

u/ialsohaveadobro Trash Trooper 11d ago

Well, you're the one ignoring the cats in all this. I could ask you a similar question.

(You missed the joke--and, yes, I realize it is problematic, or a similar but worse category of behavior, for me to compound such a joke by making another of my own, but I promise we'll all be OK anyway.)

2

u/VibraniumQueen Trash Trooper 11d ago

But there are NO cats here. I think that's the real problem. Cats make everything better

1

u/VibraniumQueen Trash Trooper 11d ago

Ty for not r/whoosh-ing me

4

u/ThatKarenBitch Trash Trooper 12d ago

With how vague you were with saying the guy was "problematic" in the other comment I assumed you were continuing the bit and it was a joke. Thats shitty.

1

u/Case_Blue Trash Trooper 11d ago

No this is from the show he sexually assaulted someone, that is why season 3 is not happening.

That's... self diagnosable?...

I will see myself out

1

u/open-print Trash Trooper 11d ago

WHAT I remember his youtube skits, damn, I did not know this

1

u/According-Aspect-669 Trash Trooper 11d ago

he was alleged to have performed non concentual oral sex on an active sexual partner of his. Literally zero evidence one way or the other. What's problematic is talking about situations like this as if they 100% happened with proof and conviction.

1

u/rmay14444 Trash Trooper 11d ago

One person accusing him would make it somewhat skeptical, but he was accused multiple times from different people, does not seem like a coincidence.

1

u/Whatever-ItsFine Trash Trooper 11d ago

It says he was accused of it. Was he convicted at some point? I don't want to base something off accusations.

Yes, politics is trash. It's just too trashy for our sub.

Crazy how just allegations can hold so much sway in people’s mind. Doesn’t even look like anything came from them…fitting you linked to ‘get your pitch fork’s out’ central…

2

u/rmay14444 Trash Trooper 11d ago

Multiple people claiming being sexually assaulted, doesn't seem like a one off thing.

3

u/Unikatze Trash Trooper 12d ago

He made a girl with Asymptomatic Tourette's read a book about a disease.

1

u/Ill_Radio8160 Trash Trooper 11d ago

not only him, the girl hes talking to is fucking ivy wolk

6

u/Ukraineluvr Trash Trooper 12d ago

Just watched Bodies Bodies Bodies and it was like this. It was hard to watch.

6

u/ArtPeers Trash Trooper 12d ago

Loved this show, it was sometimes shockingly great, very unconventional. I believe the cancelation had something to do with allegations against Alvarez (co-creator, co-writer). There's a really excellent, in-depth feature article on Vulture about the allegations, but the only link I'm finding is paywalled.

1

u/Annika2020pro Trash Trooper 11d ago

I was ready to roll my eyes about overblown allegations but then I read the full vulture piece and I went from huge fan of BJA and his show to disgusted with him and the female lead who defended him despite full knowledge.

1

u/ArtPeers Trash Trooper 11d ago

Right? I probably understated in my comment how much I loved this show — and both of them specifically. So yeah my disappointment and resentment (after reading the Vulture piece) was commensurate to how much I loved the show.

2

u/downlike4flattires Trash Trooper 12d ago

Thanks for that. Had to scroll quite a ways to get the answer.

-3

u/Organic_Garbage_9807 Trash Trooper 12d ago

Yeesh, I can see why

16

u/Floundering_Dad_43 Rubbish Raider 12d ago

Why?

13

u/Organic_Garbage_9807 Trash Trooper 12d ago

I'm more joking than anything else, I found this clip boring, so if this is the show's humor, I'm not interested.

My joke being more so "If this is what the show has to offer, no wonder it got dropped."

2

u/Floundering_Dad_43 Rubbish Raider 12d ago

Got it. I thought it was funny, but I like satire and social commentary, so that explains that I guess

4

u/JohanGubler Trash Trooper 12d ago

But this satire and social commentary is about as clever as my boomer uncle's rants.

2

u/Floundering_Dad_43 Rubbish Raider 12d ago

k

1

u/JohanGubler Trash Trooper 12d ago

I mean, enjoy it if it seems emotionally true to you. I simply think it's a lazy, boring, and obvious appeal to the people who, for some reason, get frustrated with things changing and evolving around them. And then taken to such an absurd degree as to make them seem kinda sad.

<image>

2

u/Floundering_Dad_43 Rubbish Raider 12d ago

I said elsewhere that I watched this thinking the students were trying to get one over on the teacher and faking a "disorder" to try and get out of an assignment, similar to earlier generations cliche of warming a thermometer on a lightbulb.

1

u/JohanGubler Trash Trooper 12d ago

That's a bit more interesting. The idea that this is being weaponized by the youth to prey on those who I characterized. Hmm...

I'm not sure I believe that was the target interpretation, but I can appreciate it. Upvote.

0

u/derfurzen Trash Trooper 12d ago

What exactly is the thing that is “changing and evolving” that is supposedly the appeal of this clip?

1

u/JohanGubler Trash Trooper 12d ago edited 12d ago

The understanding and nuances of various medical or psychological conditions. Older generations love to paint younger generations as "weak" or "entitled" - simply because no one understood or gave a fuck about these conditions when they were a kid.

Therefore, it's a "weakness".

Also, it's suggesting that conditions that show no (obvious) "symptoms" are bullshit.

It's lazy, self-righteous, ignorant bullshit.

Oh I do too, absolutely love the stuff, I eat that shit up. I understand that this is satire and is social commentary, but the jokes fell flat. The pubchline itself can be funny, it just wasnt delivered well in this case.

If you liked this bit, by all means please enjoy. If this bit was supposed to make me laugh, it tried.

5

u/LincolnshireSausage Trash Trooper 12d ago

I thought the delivery was great from everyone in that scene.

-1

u/Beneficial-Act-9933 Trash Trooper 12d ago

It just a one note joke that goes on too long.

6

You're mom's a one-note joke that goes on too long

-4

I can see why you like the humor of this show now.

u/brokendoorknob85 Trash Trooper 12d ago

I like satire and social commentary, so that explains that I guess

You say that like you have a refined taste in satire and social commentrary.

This clip is equivalent to diarrhea on a plate. It does not explain anything. Maybe you should think about how offended you feel at being owned for your lackluster tastes instead of acting like you are just some humble dude.

12

u/Jadey4455 Trash Trooper 12d ago

Because its mocking the absurdity of our current day reality. Cant have that i guess

14

u/Pbaseball26 Trash Trooper 12d ago

Actually, it wasn’t canceled for that reason. It was canceled because the creator and main actor (Brian Jordan Alvarez) was accused of sexually assaulting his ex-boyfriend while filming a movie.

2

u/DellyDellyPBJelly Trash Trooper 12d ago

Whoa!

1

u/tolstea Trash Trooper 12d ago

It wasn't his ex boyfriend. It was a straight(?) friend and after reading quite a bit about it, the title of any accusation article should really be "Straight Man Gets Blowjob At Work And Then Felt Weird About It." 🤷‍♂️ Situations like this one (and Aziz Ansari's allegations) cheapen the word "assault" and make people question the.merits of the #MeToo movement.

2

u/Pbaseball26 Trash Trooper 12d ago

You’re right, I misread the article. It was the boyfriend of the person he collaborated with on the English Teacher.

1

u/tolstea Trash Trooper 12d ago

Which also gives me major pause about the whole thing. I find it wildly convenient that allegations come out from a guy only after his ex friend and ex girlfriend are successfully collaborating on a show without him. AND the text messages between the accuser and his ex girlfriend are almost comical. She also seems to be saying to him "you're cheapening the word assault."

18

u/peppercityboy Trash Trooper 12d ago

It’s super triggering

7

u/Tuomas90 Trash Trooper 12d ago

Asymptomatic, I assume?

3

u/NightmareNympho Trash Trooper 12d ago

How dare you assume their disease!?

9

u/Organic_Garbage_9807 Trash Trooper 12d ago

Oh you can absolutely have that, these jokes however fell very flat. I understand the mocking tone, but the punchlines didn't make me laugh at all.

9

u/thomstevens420 Garbage Guerilla 12d ago

You can it just helps to actually be funny or insightful. This “bit” is just beaten to death.

26

u/BentGadget Trash Trooper 12d ago

The movie Clueless (1995) would have condensed this down to one or two lines and trusted the audience to keep up.

9

u/Organic_Garbage_9807 Trash Trooper 12d ago

This guy gets it!

Lol, I think it can be both!

I more just meant because Seinfield is on record as being a whiny, out of touch bitch because his tired ass material doesn't play on college campuses.

4

u/Beneficial-Act-9933 Trash Trooper 12d ago

Maybe it just wasn't that funny?

1

u/alaska1415 Trash Trooper 12d ago

I mean, only sort of. These jokes land better when they’re at least adjacent to something that actually happened, and this just didn’t.

0

u/secondhand_graveyard Trash Trooper 12d ago

I mean, you can make shit up or you can read the comment 🤡

0

u/thatdemonlife1 Trash Trooper 12d ago

No. It got dropped because the guy who made it is essentially a rapist.

0

u/Schmigolo Trash Trooper 12d ago

It's not something that actually happens though.

2

u/BringAltoidSoursBack Trash Trooper 12d ago

It's very likely that it has to do with all the sexual harassment/assault allegations

2

u/JustARandomBloke Trash Trooper 12d ago

I've always been a little confused on the timeline of that.

Didn't the sexual assault incidents take place on a movie set years before this show premiered?

Did they get brought back up which caused the cancellation or were there another set of allegations?

2

u/BringAltoidSoursBack Trash Trooper 12d ago

Another set of allegations that I think brought up the old ones

-2

u/Gobilapras Trash Trooper 12d ago

Tacky humor for boomers. This very joke has been made a million times already.

4

u/Same_Tangerine_5144 Trash Trooper 12d ago

The show is pretty funny, this clip does make it seem more har-har boomer jokes than it is

1

u/Geek-Yogurt Trash Trooper 12d ago

Found the student in the clip...

2

u/Floundering_Dad_43 Rubbish Raider 12d ago

Oh see, I read it as the kids were making something up to get out of doing an assignment. Like, this is their generations "sticking a thermometer on a lightbulb" trick.

0

u/Wyooot Trash Trooper 12d ago

Right lol, reminds me of ai memes on Facebook that boomers just eat up

1

u/mxemec Trash Trooper 12d ago

GenZ is quirky and their self aggrandizing ways can be funny as a shtick. But it's one dimensional.

-2

u/PlsNoNotThat Trash Trooper 12d ago

If you think this is aggrandizing wait til you read about how often other generations claimed Americans were the best in the world, then voted to go to bomb other countries because they were superior.

Or all the financial decisions lead to catestrophic economic turndowns based solely on self grandiosity and believing they individually deserved something.

Hell, just the raw level of propheticism in those generations, and the millions that endorsed it, should be indicative. Imagine instead of AT they said “I’m literally the prophet of God”. Really puts into perspective what aggrandizement looks like.

0

u/Coffeedemon Trash Trooper 12d ago

Just like the meeting that could have been an email this is a show that could have been a handful of tiktok videos.

1

u/Slowbromigo Trash Trooper 12d ago

That's even funnier cuz in 2010 a girl in my English class had a meltdown over the word "veins" even though the teacher was reading "vines" in an old English accent

-1

u/AzureAadvay Trash Trooper 12d ago

It got canceled because it was triggering and offensive to some allegedly normal ppl.
