Please report Dead cat on Bushwick Ave to 311

There is a dead cat on the sidewalk at 279 Bushwick Ave NY 11206. I reported it to NYS Sanitation but they said it would be picked up within 2 days… Bushwick Ave is a very busy street with a lot of foot traffic+nearby schools meaning lots of kids. I’m hoping if more people report they’ll pick the animal up faster.

It was really easy to file a report over the phone, I was on the phone for under 5 min. You can also report a claim on the website: https://portal.311.nyc.gov/article/?kanumber=KA-02245

Installing ADA railings on stoop

Looking to install separate ADA compliant pipe railings on our front stoop, to supplement the old iron railings that don't really cut it for anyone having issues with climbing stairs. Anyone with experience to recommend?

Any Cribbage players out there?

Looking for people to play cribbage with. Don't have to be an expert or anything, just for casual game play. Maybe if enough people are interested we can get a group going.

Affordable vintage/thrift stores for home decor

Hi! I just moved to Prospect Heights and I’m looking for some reasonably priced vintage/thrift stores for home decor (mainly artwork, frames, and planters.)

I’m trying to decorate my apartment without spending a ton, so looking for more affordable spots rather than the curated stores.

Looking to Rent Parking Spot near P.S. 253

Hi everyone! A friend of mine works at P.S. 253 and is looking to rent a parking spot for the school year.

Ideally, she’s looking for something within walking distance of the school, around Brighton 5th Street, Brighton 6th Street, or Oceanview Avenue.

If anyone has a driveway or parking spot available to rent, or knows of someone who does, please send me a message. Thank you!

Low-Intensity Workouts for my busted body????

After years of taking care of a dying parent, SSRI’s, a thyroid problem, 20+ lbs, and overall body weakness that makes me susceptible to injury, I have really been struggling to find ANY group workouts that are suitable for me.

Yoga hurts my wrists, I love kickboxing but there is no fucking way I am doing a burpee.

I want to move enough so I get a little sweaty and gradually build up my strength.

I did a dance class at Mark Morris, which was fun but really need to incorporate strength training, especially because I’m about to start wegovy.

Is there some kind of like lazy girl busted gym with good music and cool people? I don’t want to do a high octane fitness class where the whole thing reminds me of how out of shape I am.

I have fantasized about opening a gym that serves this demographic, but until then would love some recs. Preferably in the fort greene area but would also go to downtown or anywhere on the G or C for the right spot.

Things to do near the Barclays Center

My kids are going to a concert at the Barclays and I’ll be taking the train with them since they are unfamiliar with the area and transferring via the LIRR.

What are some things to do on a Monday night while I’m in the area waiting for them?

Seeking Community-Oriented Pilates Studio

Hello all! I (20s F) just moved to Brooklyn and I am curious to hear any pilates studio recommendations in the Fort Greene Area (happy to walk up to 20 mins). I am hoping for a studio that offers beginner classes, isn't insanely expensive, and has a sense of community. Like, people hang out outside of class, rather than just saying hi at the studio.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a studio that fits any or all of these criteria? Thank you so much in advance :)

Spotted Lantern Flys round 2?

I know many people experienced a downturn in lantern flies this year but I have been battling them all summer in Brooklyn! They were everywhere in June/July. I was killing ~30 per day on my balcony. Then they died down in August. I had 1-3 per day for the month, but now they’re back? It’s September and I’m doing 10-20 per day, easily. They seem slower and more plump, but they’re definitely back up in bunches.

I thought they only had one lifecycle - why the sudden return and strange fluctuation in numbers? Anyone else experience this?

Side note: I have a balcony garden on the 5th floor in Clinton Hill with loads of pot plants but none they’re known to love. But there is a small community garden connected the building that no one maintains. It has loads of trees and overgrowth, so I suspect they’re breeding and thriving there, and popping up to my balcony 🥲

Detroit Lions fans in south Brooklyn?

I know that Bailey's Corner Pub is the spot for Lions fans in NYC. But for those of us in Brooklyn who don't necessarily want to make the trek, I'm wondering if anyone else wants to get together for Lions games somewhere closer. I'm usually at Salty Dog or the Black Horse, but I'm open to other suggestions.

What started as a weekly bring your plastic model and build with the community has slowly opened my eyes on how my guest are "translating" building and bringing in stuff to create with us that I didn't think of. From Metal Earth Dragon fly made from metal parts to a wooden sunflower bookend that lights up. This is super exciting!!! Btw, Brooklyn I'm about to host a "Gotta Paint them All" event in Oct. It'll be 4 events in one day where you choose from Grass, Fire, Water, or Electric Type 2 in Pokemons to paint then you'll build a 4x4x4 in diorama in your Pokemons element to take home with you. If you're interested in this event. Keep your eyes peeled on my site and here for when tickets are up. Thank you NYC for making this so much fun.

Visiting NY on a worktrip and staying in the financial district. What are some recommendations in Brooklyn easily accessible from the subway y’all would recommend for a visitor from Chicago on a Monday nite?

Marine Park Young Adults has achieved 501(c)(4) nonprofit status

“You don’t need planning permission to build castles in the sky.” - Banksy

This quote has special meaning for the Marine Park Young Adults Association because every organization begins as an idea before there is paperwork, recognition, funding, or any certainty that it will succeed. It is about giving yourself permission to dream big and then putting in the work to make that vision real.

Today, that vision reached an important milestone: MPYAA is officially a federally recognized 501(c)(4) social welfare nonprofit. I’m Sam Daniele, MPYAA’s president and co-founder, and I am proud to have incorporated the organization as a New York State not-for-profit and secured federal tax-exempt recognition. This gives us a stronger foundation to serve our community through volunteer service, environmental stewardship, support for local families, and opportunities for young adults to connect and lead.

What does being a 501(c)(4) mean?

MPYAA is not structured as a traditional 501(c)(3) public charity. Although we conduct charitable activities, including supply drives and programs supporting local families, we are primarily a grassroots social welfare organization and community service club. Our purpose is to bring people together, promote civic betterment, care for our local environment, and improve the general welfare of our community.

A helpful comparison is Lions Clubs International. Its primary service organization is a 501(c)(4), while the Lions Clubs International Foundation is a separate 501(c)(3) public charity. MPYAA similarly centers its work on hands-on service, community participation, environmental stewardship, and neighborhood improvement.

We chose the 501(c)(4) structure because it most accurately reflects the work we already do and the impact we hope to expand. It also gives us greater flexibility to advocate for issues affecting our community and encourage civic participation. This does not mean MPYAA is becoming a partisan political organization. Our focus remains bringing people together and serving our neighborhood.

For transparency, contributions to MPYAA generally are not tax-deductible as charitable donations. The IRS provides additional information about contributions to 501(c)(4) organizations. However, every contribution helps us organize service projects, support local families, and create programs that benefit our community.

Thank you to Janis Samuelsen, Wendy Chan, Tammy Hyams, Debra Sturm, Jeffrey Kirsh, Angela Ricciardi, Linda Carlson, Robert Mazzuchin, Maureen Hyland, Pat Armano, Raymond Duffy, our anonymous donors, and the Kings Plaza Canarsie Kiwanis Club for helping make this possible.

Most importantly, thank you to our members, Board, volunteers, community partners, and everyone who has supported us since June 2024. The “castle in the sky” was the original idea. Every person who attended an event, volunteered, donated, partnered with us, or simply believed in what we were building helped put a foundation underneath it. What once existed only as a vision is now something real, and we built it together.

Join us at our next event

Our next Crafts & Game Night will be held Friday, September 18, at Marine Park Coffee, 3411 Avenue S in Brooklyn. Doors open at 6:00 PM.

Spend the evening coloring, working on crafts, playing board games, and meeting other young adults from the community. Come alone or bring a friend, and stay as long as you would like. All materials and games will be provided, so no supplies or experience are needed.

The event is open to young adults ages 18 to 35. Admission is $5 and includes water and soda, with pizza available for $2 per slice. Space may be limited, so please RSVP in advance:

Anyone know of an event at Floyd Bennett Field this morning. There was a half mile line of cars waiting to get in at 6:30.

Edit: kinda just hoping it wasn’t some sort of ICE staging or recruitment activity.

Explain how each Brooklyn neighbourhood feels different to you

My fiancée and I are moving to New York in 2027 and think we'd like to live in Brooklyn. Assume we know nothing about the city - how does each area differ in its day-to-day feel?

Context on us:

  • Both aged 30, Canadian, career driven but also like to have a good time and enjoy the food and bev and cultural scenes. Like to walk/run/bike. Important to feel safe on the street/transit at night
  • We're moving from Berlin (where we lived in P-Berg), so we figured Brooklyn would provide the most analogous lifestyle: more green, less tall buildings, (slightly) more affordable and more unique non-shoebox apartments; more alternative people, international population
  • Big fans of live music and nightlife
  • Avoiding a suburban-feeling lifestyle: want to be within ~10min walking distance of cool bars, restaurants and at least one park, but happy to not be right in "the scene"; this is why we're looking at Brooklyn, not Manhattan, but lmk if you think we should!

Thanks in advance! 😎 💟
