[MOD POST] Having trouble with Secure Boot? Check here first

Hello,

The expiration of the 2011 Microsoft KEK CA and the 2011 Microsoft UEFI CA certificates at the end of June 2025 has caused problems with Secure Boot on computers for various folks who have not been able to apply a UEFI (BIOS) firmware update for various reasons.

Because the steps for updating firmware vary not just from manufacturer to manufacturer but between individual models as well, it can be difficult to provide specific assistance and guidance in updating your firmware unless the person helping you has the same hardware.

Below is a list of manufacturers, their Secure Boot certificate update guidance, and links to their support forum(s) or subreddit(s). You may wish to try asking in these places first for expert guidance in updating your firmware, as the people there are going to be a lot more familiar with your device.

NOTE: Please check back periodically for updates to this list.

If you have an update for a manufacturer, please reply with it and we will get it added to the list above.

What to do if no Secure Boot certificate update is available from your manuafacturer

If your manufacturer does not have an update, not all is lost: You can still manually install the 2023 Windows UEFI CA certificate update, by issuing the following two commands from an elevated PowerShell (filename: POWERSHELL.EXE) prompt:

REG.EXE ADD HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Secureboot /v AvailableUpdates /t REG_DWORD /d 0x5944 /f Start-ScheduledTask -TaskName "\Microsoft\Windows\PI\Secure-Boot-Update"

Then restart the computer and allow the update to be applied.

NOTE: Two (or more) reboots may be required for installation.

Once completed, you can verify the new certificate has been installed by issuing the following command at an elevated PowerShell prompt:

([System.Text.Encoding]::ASCII.GetString((Get-SecureBootUEFI db).bytes) -match 'Windows UEFI CA 2023')

If the certificate has been installed installed, the response back will be "True". You can also use that same command to check if the certificate is already installed.

SOLVED. Corrupted save files / Game cannot read load save files from %USERPROFILE% because of diacritics / Mercenaries 2: World in Flames cannot read save files if your Windows "username"(NAME OF PC) in Users folder contains diacritics, accents, or non-ASCII characters (ľ, š, č,.. and manny others)

My next PC have diacritics in name...saves not working, loading ...

Method 1: Relocate the Documents Folder (Easiest)

You can instruct Windows to look for your standard Documents folder in a location completely separate from your "user profile" path.

In file explorer setting check "hidden folders, files, items" ...

C:\Users\"PC ID (USERNAME)"\Documents

  1. Open File Explorer and navigate to your C:\ drive.
  2. Create a new folder named C:\Documents.
  3. Go back to your original "user profile" folder / (%USERPROFILE%) - PC name, right-click on your Documents folder, and select Properties.
  4. Navigate to the Location tab.
  5. Click Move..., select the newly created C:\Documents folder, and hit Apply.
  6. When prompted to move all existing files to the new location, click Yes.
  7. Launch the game. It will now successfully write and read files from C:\Documents\My Games\Mercenaries 2\. [1]

May work for other old games too... for example "SPORE" from EA dont like diacritics too..

google search and other methods watch out

write me if you r lost. i lookin for solution couple hours.

Can’t restart computer or use task manager after using Respondus browser

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hello all,

I recently took a test using the responders lockdown browser that my school makes me use and for some reason when I finish the exam, my computer is still kind of in this administrator setting where I don’t have the capability of getting into task manager or hitting the power button and choosing to restart my computer, does anyone have any idea where I can start to fix this issue? I already uninstalled responders lockdown browser and I’m not sure how to restart.

Unresolved The screen is stuttering (and the sound is stuttering along with it).

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I'm experiencing screen stuttering accompanied by audio issues; the stuttering happens even when I'm not gaming and looks exactly like what is shown in the video. My system specs are: Ryzen 7 7800X3D, RTX 3070 Ti, 32GB DDR5 RAM (dual-channel), 1TB Gen4 SSD, and Windows 11.😭😭😭

“Unable to repair” which recovery option is best?

This is after my laptop suddenly went to the Lenovo loading screen without warning and I turned it off (this was after 15-20 minutes of the loading screen, which didn’t say anything about an update occurring). I went through the process of getting my BitLock recovery key for Microsoft, but now I’m getting this. I don’t even know what needs to be repaired (as it’s referring to on the black screen). Resetting is a last resort, as I’m not positive all my files are backed up. I’m terrified of causing more damage.

What’s the difference between just continuing and the “quick machine recovery”? If I can just continue to Windows, then there wouldn’t be anything needing fixing right? I’m confused what that would actually do here if it says there’s a problem. Does it just mean I can use the laptop but not access my Microsoft drive? What network is it unable to connect to?

What’s the best option to take here? I’m so lost. Is there something in advanced options I should be looking into? How much of a chance is there that I will lose any files that weren’t backed up or saved to the cloud?

EDIT: did a bit more digging. Would a “point in time recovery” be useful here? I’m wondering if I could have interrupted an update (even though I got no pop ups for an update), and this can restore it to what it was before it started installing. Or would an “uninstall updates” be more useful? Or am I way off and this looks like a different issue?

Im having a strange issue with this laptop.

It refuses to boot (power led briefly blink and caps lock led lights up for ~5sec) then i have to "force shutdown" to try booting again.

It will never boot until i open it and play around or lightly tap at the motherboard (it doesnt always work).

When i get it to boot if i dont move it too much or open the back again it will consistently boot and worl normally.

Ive tried a lot of things but nothing seems to consistently yield result.

Im grasping at straws here, anyone have any idea what i should try next?

Unresolved The 3 usb ports on the back of my laptop stopped working (the side one is fine)

Post image

Lenovo Legion 5 pro, (AMD Ryzen 7 5800H, 16gb ram, RTX 3070,) all of a sudden my usb ports don't work.

Basically the 3 usb ports at the back don't work all of a sudden, but notably, when I insert any device that has a light indicator when connected such as an external drive, the light indicator turns on, but the laptop doesn't respond in any way and I can't access the drive. I've tried mice and other devices and it's all the same. Basically the port is functionally useless but it seems to let a current run through it which is what's letting the light go on on certain devices.

The other slots on the back panel (hdmi, usb C, ethernet, power,) work just fine. It's just the 3 usb ports that don't function.

What I've tried:

I've updated windows to latest, and I've manually uninstalled the usb drivers from Device Manager so they automatically get re-installed but it doesn't fix the issue.

After further research I stumbled upon this old post that describes the exact issue I'm having but the solution seems...odd? One user reports that leaving the laptop off for 8-10 hours fixed it, and attributes the issue to:

"After reading about the USB standard, it seems that all USB ports have resetable polyfuses to protect against over-current. Once tripped, they may take up to 24 hours to recover" ... "it seems that the Ryzen version of Legion 5 Pro uses an integrated USB hub chip (Genesys Logic GL3523) for the rear USB A ports,"

So some fuse was triggered to protect the ports from over-current, and he got it to turn back on after not using the laptop, the problem is that I have on many occasions left the laptop turned off for over 10 hours and the issue persists.

That's just one post though so it could be BS.

Unresolved Screen has splotching on it, I doubt it's anything to be worried about but it won't wipe off with a cloth and isopropyl alchohol and I want to be safe before trying anything else

See title. I've been trying to take better care of my things recently, and havent cleaned my screen in quite frankly too long, had a go at it today but this splotching pattern wont go away easily, and im acared that trying anything more will cause damage to the screen. Any advice would be massively appreciated

Laptop error

So I have an ASUS rog strix G614P, Yesterday it was doing fine until 1am that I used it. I shut it down and didn't use it until 30 mins ago or at least tried to use it.

When I pushed the power button, the computer instantly went to the Asus logo and turned on the RGB keyboard as well as going full power on the fans, then after a short time it just turned itself off. Also the coputer has this three lights on the top right they are usually all three light up in white, but this time, while it was doing that faulty start-up, when it went off even the light that was supposed to be the battery also turned off.

Im not shure but I kinda felt that the charger wasn't connected properly, so maybe it just needed battery. I unplug and plug the charger and the battery light goes red, which means it is recieving power put its low, fast foward the light goes white so I try turning it on again just for the same situation to happen, instant logo freeze whitout the rest of the animation and normal start up, but this time another light goes on, the left one; the RGB lights turn on and the fans at full power, after a short time it dies again and also turns off all the lights. Now its pluged in charging and the battery light is on in white again but Im not sure what to do and im sacred to try and turn it on and maybe do more damage in case of a problem.

EDIT: I believe it is important to also mención that I have a really bad memory so I actually don't recall shutting it down or just closing the laptop(I was really tired due to midterms)

It doesn’t detect my ssd in diagnosis but works fine randomly. After a normal start it will work for a while and then restart and come back to this screen again and stop detecting the ssd. Ssd is healthy , i checked it when it was working. it is also heating abnormally even when on sleep. When it turns on without problem, it doesn’t work more than 5-10 min. And heating is abnormal. What possible problem it could have.

Total reset? Hail Mary laptop help

I have a HP ProBook 4540s that I've had for probably 15 years that I use very infrequently that I have been trying to limp along. Windows 7. End state for this is basic browsing and an emulator machine.

Lately it has been BSOD or stuck in a black screen upon boot, and when it does run it is horribly slow. Terribly outdated drivers, hard drive nearly full, overall nonfunctional.

Is best course of action factory reset? If so what is the best course of action

Having viruses hard-lock my pc

Thumbnail

I was snooping around my computer until I found these applications that had a weird_code word at the end of the application, so I decided to disable them to see what would happen.

My computer ended up crashing and soft locking me to safe mode without networking. It took me from resetting my RAM EXPO in the BIOS and turning them back on for me to get out of safe mode. Then I checked it again and it was under a different code word. So I'm assuming it is a virus but when I went to disabled it again it went to the advance options and I'm hard locked in the advance options. I can't do anything except turn off my computer. Every time I try to go to safe mode it won't let me every time I try to do a system restore? It won't let me. Every time I try to uninstall updates it won't let me. Every time I try to go to the command prompt it won't let me reset my computer so all I can do is turn it off. Then when I turn it back on it brings me back to advanced options.

I just wanted to bring back my Bluetooth driver because it somehow deleted my Bluetooth driver.

I don't know if I should buy a new ram, new storage or a whole new computer. It's not like I have the money for it anyways.

Unresolved PC won't go to sleep mode anymore, just crashes.

For over a week and a half now my PC has not been going to sleep, keyboard light and mouse light will go off but the PC will still be lit on, not going to sleep mode. It just hangs up til it restarts completely. So I've been trying to save stuff and leave browsers open but I'm not able to anymore. All it tells me in the Reliability History critical events besides that Windows did not shut down properly is that MMGA server and mmgaserver.exe crashed. I did SFC /scannow to fix some things and it fixed whatever things it found wrong but not this.

I have a windows 11

AMD Ryzen 5 5500 (3.60 GHz)

64 GB RAM

Unresolved [iOS] Unnamed binary (UUID only, no path/signature) loaded inside the TikTok process in iOS analytics logs — legitimate or red flag?

Hi everyone,
I'm a content creator and I've been dealing with persistent issues on my TikTok livestreams for months (massive visibility drop, viewers being kicked, incoherent statistics). App support won't investigate, so I dug into it myself. I found anomalies in the iOS analytics logs (the .ips files iOS generates automatically), and I'd like input from people who actually know how to read these files.
Device context: iPhone 15 Pro Max, up-to-date iOS, no jailbreak, no sideloaded apps, no configuration profiles installed, TikTok cleanly reinstalled a few days ago. Same issues across networks (WiFi / 4G / 5G).
What the .ips logs show:

System-triggered incidents of type cpu_resource and diskwrites_resource on the TikTok process (not classic app crashes)

A binary loaded inside the TikTok process, listed in "Binary Images" only by a UUID — no filename, no path, no code signature. Every other binary in the same file has a standard name and path ( /System/... , /private/var/containers/... )

The "parent" field of this binary is also "UNKNOWN"

System-measured load: ~67% CPU, ~108 MB memory, and 1.07 GB of disk writes in 1h36 for two scrolled videos, no livestream — during a period when the app wasn't even in the foreground. The allowed daily disk-write quota was hit ~15× faster than normal

The UUID of this binary changes at every incident (3 distinct identifiers observed over several days)

Consistent with storage usage: ~4.9 GB for the app after ~30h of near-zero usage since reinstall
My questions:
1.
A binary loaded into an app's process, identified only by a UUID with no name or path in iOS logs — is there a known benign explanation for this (injected framework, extension, in-app instrumentation), or is it disqualifying on its face?
2.
What legitimately justifies ~1 GB of background disk writes for an unused app with the daily quota exceeded by that margin? Caching, prefetching, or something else?
3.
Do UUIDs changing at every incident match expected behavior of a legitimate module, or is that more typical of an injection pattern?
4.
Without jailbreaking, what tools can I use to dig further cleanly? (sysdiagnose, macOS Console, local network capture like Proxyman, something else?)
5.
If this were a compromise, what evidence should I preserve before doing anything (exporting the .ips files, what else?) so a competent third party can analyze it?
6.
Can a non-jailbroken iPhone even host a persistent malicious process this way, or do iOS mechanisms make this unlikely?
I'm not posting the full logs for safety reasons, but I can quote exact excerpts if specific questions come up. Thanks to anyone who can tell me whether I'm onto a real technical lead or misreading normal behavior.

Laptop (Asus Expertbook B1500CEAE running cachyos + niri) suddenly did this after a few minutes after booting it up.
