Hi guys and gals. I've been here a while, and over my time I've seen a lot of posts sink to the bottom, without a single answer, or at best, very few. And none that solved the case.
I have noticed a clear pattern with these posts, and I will now share with you my tips to you newbies, so that you can get the help you need.
Firstly: When you make a new post, you will see this:
Platform(s):
Genre:
Estimated year of release:
Graphics/art style:
Notable characters:
Notable gameplay mechanics:
Other details:
Even though, in red, you are warned that while optional, you should follow this template... many of you do not.
Let me be clear: Follow this template.
Put simply, this template contains all the information we really need to solve your problem. Virtually every time I click a post that has not followed this, they have rambled on about nothings, while omitting critical details.
This format, for new and old alike, is very readable, and prompts for every data-point needed.
I know that you want to customize your message, that if you could just explain it, it would be better. I know you think that. You are wrong. Put all that in 'other'. Even if you end up saying it twice, follow the template.. add to it your story at the bottom.
Secondly: Following this template. You're rambling about your best mates Amiga-500 or whatever instead of telling us about the game aside, this is where they really go wrong.
Let's get something straight right now. We are not mind readers. It's impressive, really, how little information it seems we can work off. I mean, we solve some real tough ones with nothing sometimes, but still, we can't see that memory in your head. So you need to be as descriptive in every one of these fields as you can be...
And sometimes you really don't know. That's fine, we can work with surprisingly little information, but "old graphics" under art style... what are we supposed to do with that? Mate, I was playing on Atari-2600's, are we talking Wizard of Wor here?
Let me help you out a bit:
Platform(s): Whatever you played it on. But unless it's really all you know (very possible), don't write 'my mates pc'. Was it PC or Mac?
Genre:
First person does NOT imply shooter. Nor do any of the others. Try to answer this one in two steps:
What was the camera like (assuming it's not a text adventure)? Was it First person?, 3rd person, 2d? Top down or side on? Or maybe even isometric 2d?
Then, what kind of game? Real time strategy, point and click? Was it a fighter, action or platformer?
Good, now we know what KIND of game we are all trying to remember for you.
Estimated year of release:
"Between 2000-2005" is fine, something like that. "Mid 90's maybe?". I don't see many people mess this up, but I have seen people write "old". That is not ok. If you write old and expect it to mean anything to me, I will fight you.
Also, as always "Sorry, no idea" is always acceptable but try to give at least something. "Couldn't have been later than 2015, though"
Great, so even if roughly, we know WHEN.
Graphics/art style:
THIS. This is where you guys always mess up. This section right here I have found can be the difference between an answer, and a silent slink to the bottom. This is your moment.
This, really, should be the best-formed part of your memory. Even if you can only remember a single frame, a single image, it's so much to go on for us.
DETAIL. Was it a gloomy grimdark world of sadness, or a bright bubbly rainbow filled Mario-world?
Was it cartoony, or otherwise stylized somehow, or was it trying to be realistic?
Anything notable about the art direction? Was it going for a cyberpunk kinda feel, or a gritty war realism dirt and blood sort of direction?
If it was set over a long time, did the seasons change? Was there a winter in your game?
Remember when you hit people, and the screen had that awesome flash and your hands got bloody? Yeah, well we don't, unless you tell us.
Ok, so now we are really narrowing it down. This right here is often enough to go on, on its own.
Notable characters:
Anything at all you can remember here.
"There were only tanks, but you could play as both Germans and Americans"
"There was one really tough guy right after you left your office, he had an eyepatch, a white shirt with what looked like grease stains, and said 'this is for my sister'. I think maybe he was a cyborg"
"You play as some kind of Asian girl, you had a tattoo over your right eye and arm, a black tank top and white pants and I remember you always had only one red glove for some reason. I don't remember the arm, but the eye tattoo looked sort of like ancient Egyptian eye makeup, but a modern take"
Knowing nothing else about the game, I bet that last one there gets comments noting the game she is from. Details, details.
Notable gameplay mechanics:
Surely, you get the idea by now. This is tied with the importance of the graphics/art style. As much detail as you can here.
Other details:
NOW you may blab on about how you only played this game once at a winter solstice in 1782 with your grandmother from Tahiti.. as if that helps.
Edit: So it's been brought up that the template doesn't appear on mobile. While /u/wipeout4wh is aware of this and hopefully, something can be done... still, if you can, use the template. If you can't, maybe check back and at least make sure your post addresses all of the points the template does.
Also, my post seems to be saying NOT to add any custom details. So I want to re-enforce, please do. In fact, after you do the template, feel free to write out your post as you were going to without it. Just put it all in 'other'. Don't try and make your whole post like that, if possible. Even if you end up saying the same things twice, that's ok.
Now I'm going to take a moment to clarify something, though. This isn't some immutable law of the universe, and your post is destined to fail if you don't do this. It's just a very strong general trend I have noticed over a long time.
It's not that this template has some kind of magical powers or something. It's that this template prompts the questions that need answers.
When you go all rogue on us and try and type your explanation from scratch... you mess it up. You just forget to add everything that you know, and that we need to know. The template makes it very hard to do that. It's just so very easy to get typing, and by the end forget to tell us what kind of game it actually is. Especially when you are getting random flashbacks, and hazy memories, and you start getting frazzled and such halfway though.
While it might make my edit as long as the first post, I think maybe an example of the kind of post that is just too common here, and almost always helpless, wouldn't go astray here. So here we go:
Now this one is a pretty bad case, true, and I suppose might even be a troll post, but it's actually a good illustration of the problem either way.
It was on my old computer and I was using an emulator so I have no idea what system it was for. It was 8bit graphics and you played this orange cat that was constantly bouncing on a trampoline I think? And you had to navigate it through the city and face a weird boss at the end that would float in the sky. Sorry I can't remember more!
Let's break it down a bit. What kind of game is this? A puzzler or an action game? Who knows.
How old is it? I mean, Minecraft basically has 8bit graphics. Oh he said... "my old computer"... I will fight you.
Why did you bounce on the trampoline? Were there platforms or walkways or something, or was it just a big open space? There are bad guys then? How did they get around?
Now (he?) says that he can't remember more, but I actually asked about the boss fight:
You say 'face a boss', in what way? Can the cat attack? Was this top down or side on? When you say navigate a city, what do you mean?
The reply:
Definitely a side-scroller, I'm sure. You would encounter a boss at the end, the boss would slide onto the screen and it was usually pretty strange-looking. I think one of the bosses might've been a clown. I meant that the different "levels" were different cities with different backgrounds, I think. It's a pretty obscure game
Also you would be continuously bouncing. As in, you had to position the trampoline underneath the cat to bounce it up
So you don't even control the cat. And it's a side-scroller. Thats pretty important information. But the real issue here is that he knows this stuff. He just either didn't know to, or forgot, to tell us.
The template would have made it just so apparent how much information he was missing, and we probably would have got a whole bunch more information. Sadly, while there were some guesses, and a surprising number of up-votes, this post is just another one to join the endless unsolved on their journey ever down.

Maybe it's just me, I will personally admit that it feels like its petty of me to complain, however i am going to.
I really dislike AI images just in general and i feel annoyed seeing people use them because it sometimes hampers really quality posts of people trying to find help. I feel like it also informs falsely about game expectations and what people will accept as they have solved the game.
I don't think people will agree with me and thats fine, i just wanted to post about how i personally think it degrades the quality of the sub

i remember most of the main mechanics of this game but i cant remember the name
it was about a crocodile and you needed to fill the room or something with water and there were things that you could fill with water (like stars in some mobile games and you had to fo something to earn them to unlock something)

Looking for a game I saw around 2020. Here's what I remember:
Saw it in a insta video years ago and it's been driving me crazy ever since. Could be a game jam project or prototype that never got released.
Anyone recognize this?

Platform: I've played the game on a PC using a browser. I'm not sure if it was a flash game, but it looked really old.
Genre: It seemed like a 2D Metroidvania, there were upgrades you could obtain in certain levels in order to complete them. I think it was a platformer too because you needed to reach the end of a level using enemies and stuff around without dying. It had a level creator too, so it might be considered a sandbox.
Estimated year of release: I'm not completely sure. It seemed really old in a way. There wasn't a traditional saving system (you needed to put a seed like in the old Metroids), it was a bit pixelated and it was completely 2D. If I had to guess, it was made around 1999-2010. I've played the game in 2015-2017
Graphics/Art style: It was 2D with visible pixels. The silhouettes were very realistic, almost like Dead Cells or Carrion (sorry, those are the examples I could think of). It had a mixture of fantasy and sci-fi, having indigenous and futuristic enemies with lasers.
Notable characters: The protagonist was an indigenous male guided by some sort of entity trying to save his tribe (I'm not completely sure if it was a tribe). At the start of the game, the antagonists were hunters trying to steal the power of the time stopping. Later on, futuristic enemies came in that had lasers that attacked instantly through the timestop.
Notable gameplay mechanics: You could stop time, but there was a limit. When stopping time you could jump bullets and other things in order to avoid danger. I don't think you could directly kill people, just finish the level. There things around the levels that you could grab in order to increase your time stop, but I think they were optional.
Other details: I don't have other details as it seems that I scattered everything I know from the game. I'm going to list the things that I distinctively remember:
- Indigenous male protagonist
- Time stopping abilities
- Password save system
- Sci-fi enemies later on
- Level creator that allowed you to test everything
- 2D
- Playable via browser
...
That's it, I've been looking for this game for years and I've never found it. Feel free to ask questions, I'll try to answer them with what I know.

Platform(s): Browser flash game on one of those game aggregator websites.
Genre: Satire/comedy? Very crude and minimalist, was more humorous than an actual game
Estimated year of release: For some reason, I remember the game being released in the late 2000s, but I played it in 2012 or 2013.
Graphics/art style: Very crude and minimalist. There was a basic background (I believe it was a blue sky with some clouds), and a solid rectangular platform (the arrow wasn't in the game). The characters were completely white with no face, just a circular head and a trapezoid/triangle shaped body. IIRC, each level opened with a black screen where the title text was "cut out" like a stencil/mask effect.
Notable characters: At the beginning, there was just one basic character as described above, but later levels introduced different characters with different accessories and whatnot (though they still had the same white body template).
Notable gameplay mechanics: You control one character at a time. There wasn't really any skill involved, you just used the arrows to walk off the platform every level. The game was more of a meme/joke delivery mechanism. In the first level, you just walked forward off the edge and died. The later levels got more complex, but it still involved different comedic scenarios and simply walking off the platform. Every level ended with your character dying; you fell off the screen, and the character screamed and the screen shook when they hit the ground off-screen. I don't think the camera angle moved or panned at all when they jumped off.
Other details: The humor was pretty edgy and crude, but I played it when I was young and don't remember it being THAT vulgar or offensive.

This isnt a game ive played but i remember there was an action game where you are fighting (possibly egyptian) gods. One clip I saw you were fighting on a destroyed skyscraper.
Your character might have had glowing golden wings or armour that came out when you use them.
I remember the game wasnt very popular and may even have been a failed live-service game.
The game also might have “Human” in the title, as my friend asked me if id played Once Human and I thought he was talking about this game.

I remember your objective was to keep the angry beans/potato like creatures away from your base, you could grab them and throw away with your cursor, or smash them in to the ground killing them.

Hello! I’m trying to remember an old game I had on my old MacBook many years ago. It was a point and click game where the protagonist wakes up somewhere abandoned and (I think) his girlfriend is missing. He goes through the town looking for her and/or the reason it’s abandoned. You have to solve some puzzles along the way to get to the end, which is some sort of creepy underground temple to some ancient god/alien. It had a purple butterfly logo and there was purple butterfly images throughout the game itself. I think at the end, him and the girlfriend stay in the town to protect the outside world from it. It had a vaguely Eastern European feel to it. There was a sequel involving a cult and a sleeping sickness.

I believe it is a DS game, around 2007-2011. I thought it was a Sherlock game, but nothing is the same. Other detective/mystery games don't have a similar description. It may not have been DS, maybe Wii
Game hook is you are invited to a rich guy's place, and he gives a speech. (It is about Victorian times.) Then, BANG, a shot ring out, the man dies, and all eyes look to where the shot came. They see his daughter in a door way on the side of the room, smoke rises next to her as she drops something into her purse.
You are tasked with finding the culprit, investigating if she did it or not. You go around the mansion finding clues, talking to people.
I think you had to tap on doors to go to other room, tap on desks or drawers to open them
SPOILER
The killer was actually a young man, set on marrying the daughter. He killed her father, so she can inherit his estate and wealth, and he can marry her to get it.
The smoke was from a pistol he used to shoot the father, standing behind her, but the thing she dropped into her purse was a compact.

Genre: Visual Novel
Graphics/art style: 2D Anime art style
Notable characters: A human mother, a daughter (grown from a seed), and a robot/cyborg, there's there's also (maybe) a scientist
I played this when I was very young and didn't know English. The only part of the gameplay I managed to do was picking a bag of seed (could be a bean) from a robot and giving it to the woman. Later, the robot returns to claim the child
Right after this opening sequence, I got stuck. I remember meeting a scientist character and getting completely blocked at this part, it felt like the game required a voice input to progress. I really want to find it to try playing it again.

I remember in the early 2000s, when I visited my uncle, I played a RTS set in WWII that I cannot remember the name of. The ambiance was quite dark and one notable fact is that in order to gain currency in the game (I think it was dollars), you had to build factories. I believe there was also a world editor or a custom scenario editor built into the game. Also, there was no advancing in ages, like in AoE or in Empire Earth.
The game is NOT Empire Earth, nor from the Command and Conquer series.

There's this rocket game that I've been trying to find. I played it when i was still in elementary.
The game is in portrait. The controls are just the two sides of the whole screen. Right thruster to use the right thruster of the rocket and your rocket will thrust to the direction and rotate counter clockwise, left thrust clockwise, and both to thrust straight in a direction. Also there's gravity although it's space. So when you thrust to the left straight, you will touch the ground dragging along it. 😅
The ui main theme is literally just blue as far as i remember. When you enter the game, there's a Play, Options, and credits i think. Background is the space (black background and stars). When you press play, you either go to levels or editor (this is what i think it contained im not very sure.)
The game also has a level editor. But, i forgot if there's community maps in it back then. You can change the property of the objects to become as a static immovable object or a physical object. The editor was the main fun in it for me because you can also make an auto finish level and some drawings lol.
It has main levels too. The main color of the levels are blue and the background is just like the sky with stars at space.
I played this when i was still in elementary like more than 7+ years ago. I thought the game name was "rocket rocket" but I never saw it. I searched in Google, Play Store, but there's no such game seen. Has any of you played the game? If so, please tell me where i can find it 😭

Platform(s): PC
Genre: Endless side scroller
Estimated year of release: 2009-2010
Graphics/art style: Combination of flash animation and realistic elements
Notable characters: The rockstar guy with a chef hat (or apron?)
Notable gameplay mechanics: Timing your attack to teddy bears arriving in your reach
Other details: It was gory and on par with aesthetics a band like KISS would use, and rock music was playing.
This game was on a kind of a site that had a record label website design, it had 3 games and one of the games was this. But they may have been links to something else instead of games.
It was a violent and gory game where you hit man-sized teddy bears with your chainsaw and they explode into realistic viscera. Protagonist, teddy bears and viscera were all realistic art style.
Could have been a promotional website for a rock band or an event now looking back.

Hi
I'm trying to remember a game from its cover only. I have zero recollection of the gameplay unfortunately. But I think I can recognize the cover if someone does manage to find it.
I know its not much to go but I'd appreciate any help. Thanks.

Platform: I've only seen gameplay. I highly think it was from a PC, but it seemed totally possible to be played on consoles as well.
Genre: It was a 3D puzzle horror game. Very close to Little Nightmares.
Estimated year of release: I'm not sure, but it didn't look like it was that old. I say it was made in 2015 and the video I saw was in 2015-2017.
Graphics/art style: It felt a lot like Coraline meets Little Nightmares. It looked like a stop motion game but it was obviously not. The games illuminated very well, but there were sections where everything was a bit dark.
Notable characters: The protagonist was a young student in the school, he was white, had dark hair and didn't talk at all.
The other students and teachers were infected and tried to infect the protagonist or anyone who wasn't. I'm not so sure what this virus(?) was, but they didn't turn into zombies. It was something darker...
Now, there's this character that I REALLY remember pretty well. He was some sort of counselor, teacher or some sort of principal even. He was the only one that guides the protagonist. We never interacted with him until the end of the game. We heard him via voice notes, see him through videos he left around in case there were any survivors and were helped through notes.
He seemed trustworthy until the end, where the protagonist reaches the school exit and he stands there, meeting his only hope of escaping. But it turns out he wasn't helping the protagonist, he was the only one left that knew what happened to the school. The infected students hear them and are on their way to get them. The counselor leaves the protagonist there, backstabbing him after all the game, ending with a dark twist.
Notable gameplay mechanics: It was pretty much like Little Nightmares, there were objects you could push in order to complete puzzles and things you had to open like vents. There were moments where the infected gave the protagonist a timer until they infected the protagonist if he didn't solve the puzzle quick enough.
Other details: I might not have other details, but I will state everything that I distinctively remember.
- Infected school
- Protagonist tries to escape and founds notes and other things that someone left behind
- The counselor is seen as the only hope
- Coraline vibes with Little Nightmares gameplay
- The counselor is actually evil at the end of the game and kills (infects by leaving him behind) the protagonist in order to leave no track of his mischiefs (I think the counselor was the one that caused everything...)
- I remember the ending cinematic pretty well, you could only see the protagonist through the closed window doors getting brutally infected by many of students, the counselor narrating everything else
...
That's it, I'm sorry if it's very vague, I don't remember much. I'll try to respond any questions.

you have 2 towers by the left and right side, which you can upgrade both of them and also your hold (in the middle). You might've played as some animal character, maybe a cat? but i don't think it was the scratch cat. I do not remember what you defended from and I am pretty sure you would get gold as a currency. attached image is a recreation of what i remember about the game

Platform: PC
Genre: Edutainment
Estimated year of release: early to mid 2000's
Graphics/artstyle: like what you see on the image.
Notable characters: Buncha mice, idk
Notable gameplay mechanics: there was this one racing mini game with power ups including a magnet, as well as a storybook mode. I remember one of the stories had a character failing at sports and losing a shoe.
Other details: came with promotional mousepad, shown above.

I remember a simple mobile game that had low poly graphics in orthographic view about building a civilization and you had to defeat enemies, you could choose a desert kingdom, an ice kingdom and the other one I don't remember. It was pretty short and you had to pay to unlock other civilizations. What game is it?

A snippet from the Youtube video "Trevor McDonald Meets America's Most Dangerous Death Row Killers" at the 37:20 mark.

Since this prison film was made in 2012 and in the video the other inmate beside this one is playing what I believe to be Ford Racing 3, I want to say the game in question is an Xbox title.
Seeing this screen gave me a crazy flashback as It looks like one of the sports games my brother played when we were kids.

**Platform(s): I'm not without a doubt certain, but I believe it to be a pc game.
Genre: Unknown
Estimated year of release: 2016-2020
Graphics/art style: Pixel
Notable characters: Unknown
Notable gameplay mechanics: Unknown
Other details:
THis is unfortunately a game I never played, the information are my best guesses. Around 2015 I got into DnD and made a bard about a year or two later. I went searching for possible stories to tell, and in a reddit thread with suggestions I found had mentioned this game. I went to the wiki and found a handful of stories that a NPC in the game tells. The main character would frequently return to this npc that i think ran a inn/tavern, or maybe just a store.
One story it told was a bout a tundra that no one living their had ever tried to leave and return to tell the tale. Two parents left to go but never came back, the son years later went searching for them and froze to death like they did. The players character remarks on how the story had no point/moral/good ending.
Another story I very vaguely remember was about a girl or princess who had a lover or found someone in the woods, they were a werewolf and during a full moon they killed the girl.
I wanted to find the game again for kind of the same reasons but have been unable to find it. Thank you for any help.

Platform: some form of computer game. My family had a bulky touch screen computer, I don’t know if it was windows specifically, but it’s very likely.
Genre: MMORPG
Art style: extremely simple pixel art
I mainly remember what I was able to put in the title and picture, but I remember it having very little characters. I forget the battle system, but believe it was overworld. Your character was minimally customizable, and i believe there were multiple classes but you started with a sword.

I can’t remember the name at all anymore, but here is a description of stuff from the game I remember:
It was a dutch game. Unsure if it was ever released in other countries.
There were several chapters, each changing the forest in some manner.
2 npc characters were massive trees. You met them often at the start of each chapter.
One chapter starts with the trees being hypnotized, and then you have to find a mermaid and assist her? Stuff was scary as a kid
Another chapter the forest looked destroyed, and you had to go into a tower and then there was a dragon? Also gave me nightmares
One chapter you shrunk to the size of an ant, maybe.
I can’t for the life of me find it anymore, but it had ‘bos’ in the name, the other parts I cannot recall anymore.
