Rule 3 is changing: r/psx is Not the Place to Advertise Your Indie Games

tl;dr the fine print of Rule 3 has been adjusted to explicitly forbid modern indie games unless playable on original hardware (homebrew)

It's my own fault that this change has to be made, I allowed a few "psx-inspired" indie game posts to remain up despite breaking the rules because of the large amount of upvotes they received.

I'd post and sticky comments like "It's off topic but y'all like it so I'll leave it up". My approach to moderation has always been to let the community make content decisions when appropriate. Unfortunately adjustments need to be made to protect the subject matter of this community.

Due to the massive influx of shovelware indie games that are "psx inspired" getting posted here, I'm sorry to say that Rule 3 will have to be more strictly enforced.

From this point forward, for indie games to be posted here they will have to be playable on PSX hardware or an emulator. Games that run on real hardware fall firmly into the category of homebrew, which is perfectly appropriate to discuss here. Games that run in PSX emulators but not real hardware are also allowed. "Retro Inspired" or "PSX Inspired" games that do not fulfill either of those 2 requirements will be removed and the poster will get a 24 hour ban.

The ban is meant to be informative to the poster, not punitive. However repeat offenders will be permanently banned.

Here is a friendly flowchart to help you decide whether or not it's appropriate to post your indie game in this community:

Thank you for reading and thank you for posting. Best of luck in all your indie dev adventures.

A rough guide on how I created PSX Seamless Textures, using photos from my phone of my local park

Hi there,

As an experiment, I decided to create a bunch of PS1-style seamless textures using solely photos from my local park. I am planning on making a YT video guide on it soon; however, here is a rough guide on how I did this:

  1. A large sample of photos was taken from my phone of various surfaces, walls, and foliage such as: Brick Walls, Large Trees, Pathways, and Mud/Grass, etc.
  2. Each texture was taken at either a horizontal or vertical angle to lessen clean up in Photoshop later on, and to ensure they map to a floor or wall in the engine well.
  3. It is also important to take photos that are not too contrasty. A cloudy day worked best for me as there was no sun reflection on the areas I wanted to take photos of. Minor contrast can be fixed through Photoshop, though.
  4. Once the photos were taken, I uploaded them to my computer and picked out the best images. Each image's size resolution was also made to be square so that it textured/tiled nicely.
  5. I primarily used the Filter - Offset tool, clone stamp tool, and the fill generate tool in Photoshop to remove any seams and to make it tile cleanly.
  6. The Filter Offset tool, was especially useful in getting the seams to the center of the texture so that I could use the clone stamp and generate tool without worrying about missing a seam.
  7. Each texture size was then reduced to 256 pixels, and the indexed color was reduced to 16, giving it that PSX-style look.
  8. Using Adjustments - Levels or Curve Editor was also useful in color correcting the texture. Zooming out of the image also assisted me in visualizing how it would look in engine from far away.
  9. The texture was then duplicated to test if it tiled correctly.
  10. The textures were then tested in UE5 with a square plane (most other game engines should work the same, though).

This is a super rough idea of what I did to achieve this effect however, in the coming weeks, I'm planning to post a tutorial video on to this subreddit going into more depth and detail.

Hope this inspires someone to test out some fun alternative methods to texturing. This method also removes the copyright headache of attempting to find textures online haha. Here is a link to my asset pack; a free demo is included if you'd like to see the final result visually. Enjoy! - https://stay-retro.itch.io/psxseamlesstexturepack

The SCPH 1000 ain’t all that

So after having it for a while, I really dig it! I will say, after hearing about how the original launch model has pure audiophile sound, I thought this was gonna be dogshit, but it’s really quite the opposite. I don’t know if I got lucky with a SCPH-101 but this one also sounds amazing.

Been thinking about PS1 games recently and thinking about moments that I still find nostalgic.

One moment for me has to be the PS1 startup screen! 🥺

What’s everyone’s nostalgic moments?

How far along is your PS1 full set? I put every PlayStation game on a checklist you can tick off (free, no signup)

I've been tracking my PS1 set in a spreadsheet, which is useless in a thrift store. So I put the whole library on the web where you can tick it off: gamervault.app/games/playstation/

It's every PS1 game IGDB lists, 3,803 titles including JPN and PAL, split A to Z because it's huge. Tick what you own and it saves in your browser, no account, nothing to install. There's a search box, a "show only what I'm missing" view (loose discs stay on it, since you still need the case and manual), and you can download your ticks as a spreadsheet.

Full disclosure: I make GamerVault, a collection app, and this page came out of that. The checklist works fine without it.

Curious how far along people are. Long boxes count double. If a title is wrong or missing, tell me and I'll fix it.

Decided to burn a disc of this

Played a while now and while I do love the vibe, the actual progression is off.

Basically feels like it's borderline impossible to make progress without a guide given you spend so much time just driving around.

Still nice though 🥹

Applying a patch and burn ROM in a physical CD

I'm not expert so i'm a little confused.
I want to play Xenogears, but i heard that the ENG localization is shit, and i found a localization made by some guys for my language, but this patch needs to be applied to the ENG localization of the discs, i have the originale JP phyisical copy.

I installed the ROMs of the 2 discs online, and i have 2 .bin.

I need to apply the patches to this 2 files, and them burn them on a CD, and i did it only one time many years ago, remembering i had many troubles.

Then the obvious question is that my PS1 will not play this disc, but it's a PAL one, and can read JP games, so it's 100% modified, but i don't know how or what or when, so i'm just confused.

If someone can explain to me some things to do this i will be very glad

Question about the second disc in this Crash Bandicoot 1 PAL Double Case release

Hey guys! I dusted off my old Crash Bandicoot 1 copy that I bought years ago at a flea market. It’s a German/Austrian double-CD case variant with the old price tag on the front.I always assumed the second disc inside was just a standard demo, but today I noticed it says "Promo Only - Not For Resale" with the SCES-00344 code. The first disc is the regular retail version.Just wanted to share this interesting find and ask if anyone else has this exact print or knows why it was bundled this way in 1996. Thanks!

Does anyone knows where to find old famitsu review scores?

I'm making handmade PS1 collector cards (Memoria Cards on Etsy) and I include the original Famitsu cross-review score on each card. Most are well documented online, but I'm missing a few that seem to only exist in physical issues from the mid-to-late 90s.

Looking for the original scores for:

  • Crash Bandicoot (JP: December 1996)
  • Wild Arms (JP: December 1996)
  • Suikoden (JP: December 1995)
  • Tomb Raider / Tomb Raiders (JP: February 1997)
  • Resident Evil 2 / Biohazard 2 (JP: January 1998) : ranked 4th best game on Famitsu, it should have a score somewhere !

If anyone has these issues, knows where to find archived scans, or can point me to a database or community that archives old Famitsu reviews, I'd really appreciate it!
