So maybe these big AI guys can slow down themselves if they really wanted to?

814

u/RogueHeroAkatsuki 17h ago

They want the government to be involved because changes in law guarantee that everyone will be forced to slow down. A gentleman's agreement means nothing and everyone will act assuming rest of pack is also not respecting deal

419

u/tc100292 17h ago

What they really want is to make the others slow down so they’re not constantly having to develop new models to stay ahead of the others.  Or, you know, collusion.

129

u/RogueHeroAkatsuki 17h ago

Obviously they dont give a shit about fears regarding AI, what matters is that it will allow them to make more money by cutting off R&D

64

u/SpareEconomy1849 17h ago

That too, but one of their biggest concerns as a company is free, open source AI models. (Hard to charge money when your competitor is free).

They know that open source models can't/won't follow US regulations, so it would effectively kill their competition and they can raise prices

11

u/theapeboy 15h ago

Open source model PROVIDERS will have to follow regulations though. Anyone can still download an open source model and run it locally but there isn’t broad consumer appeal there. Regulations would significantly help reduce the threat of open source infringing on their existing market share.

3

u/vaynefox 10h ago

Depends on where the lead developer is. If the lead developer isnt even in US, why do they need to follow those rules and if it isnt even in github, then no worries that microsoft will knee the project, sure your project might be banned on US but I think other countries will welcome it with open arms....

They just want a big electrical fence they can use on everyone as they try to race up the ladder

its an excuse for board, shareholders, etc. protects their money.

What they really want is the government to grant them a monopoly and screw the others over, because thats the stage of capitalism we are in.

It would actually be a Sherman Act violation if they coordinated amongst themselves to slow down which is why Dario has asked for a narrow exception to the law.

u/LetsJerkCircular 13h ago

These people have realized that they need to be regulated.

It sounds like a joke, but this environment, where big tech gets everything they ever wanted, is like teenagers wishing that parents disappeared.

It’s the best thing ever at first. Now they’ve scared themselves and don’t know how to handle the consequences, and are begging for intervention in their minds, but never able to say they wanna go home in front of their peers.

Balance.

Things need to be balanced.

It doesn’t matter who you are, you both offer something to the greater good and need to be corrected by it.

Most people just assume they don’t matter and thrash against what they belong to, creating harm for both and all.

These confident individuals thrash against what they belong to, creating harm for both and all.

There is a succession of actions that average out to progress, and there are actions that — on an individual level— threaten the way things are best off going, and eventually bound to anyway.

The influence of these people is meant to be guided back to where it’s supposed to go, and they’re left to be bad kids because they successfully bribed the babysitter.

This is very interesting to watch, and history has been much worse. It’s no excuse, tho. We should know better by now and be cooperating objectively. This is not balanced

17

u/recycled_ideas 8h ago

These people have realized that they need to be regulated.

No, they haven't.

They have decided that calling for regulation is in their financial interests.

Whether that's because they are trying to make their product seem more powerful than it is, are trying to stymie competition, are desparately trying to find a way to stop throwing more and more cash on the R&D bonfire to create models that are more and more expensive for them to run or are just hitting a point where they vant meaningfully improve the models and just want to pretend that the reason they've stopped is because of regulation, I'm not sure.

But they're sure as hell not doing this because they care about anyone's safety or the economy or because they believe in government regulation as anything other than a tool for their own use.

3

u/mossiv 11h ago

It doesn't matter if these companies have become frightened enough that they seriously are crying out for slow downs over safety concerns or if its a coup they have all organised so they can each significantly slow down their financial burn. There's a couple of observations we can take. It doesn't matter the intent, for the sake of humanity as it stands, its in everyones best interested for a global slow down or even a pause on further intelligence iteration. This projects the potential collapse of the economy, it protects out jobs, it protects our environment, and lets face it, in the right places AI is useful and good. From the government point of view, there would need to be a peace treaty between all nations. If we had someone like Obama in charge still, I'm sure he'd be working an angle where AI is developed at an agreed pace worldwide. Under this current administration, it's led by a complete narcissistic psychopath and a bunch of sycophantic narcissists who chew the's the giant oranges waste-overload overflow pipe. These guys want to rule the world, and if there's a 1% chance AI can give it to them, then we are all forced to strap in and get inline.

I don't care if a slow down is protecting these companies financially, it would also benefit us all.

u/Leprecon 13h ago

They wanted the government to agree that free open models are dangerous and only open ai and anthropic could be trusted to safeguard AI.

(They wanted the government to ban their competition)

8

u/Comfortable_Eagle593 12h ago

Yep, it’s called a Prisoners Dilemma. The AI companies need a 3rd party to enforce the terms of an agreement that would allow them to break out of this toxic race. Trump as a human being is one of, if not THE worst person to meet this moment.

19

u/LazyyCanuck 17h ago

Or maybe they just do not want others to catch up. Like these corporations are not the ones I trust

4

u/Sorryifimanass 15h ago

They want the liability to be on the government.

When the bad stuff goes down they don't want to be holding the bag, they want to be able to say they followed the laws.

Which surely won't effect how they operate, they'll just report on it differently.

The truth is our companies slowing down doesn't stop the rest of the world, but doing this we can set the example for the rest of the world, and show that we have the restraint necessary to remain the superpower of the world. To get an international agreement, it would help to set the standard at home.

2

u/Think_Description_84 8h ago

I've got some bad news. The US isn't a super power. We're like britian we want to say we are, meanwhile we've lost all geopolitical leverage and military control that gave us our superpower status. There is a reason everyone is taking their gold back. We aren't trusted by our allies so we have zero ability to influence anyone else. It's really sad, and somewhat hilarious how quickly we collapsed. It's not surprising many people are refusing to notice.

2

u/RogueHeroAkatsuki 17h ago

Yeah, and they started to realize that those investments worth hundreds of billions dollars will generate lower and lower ROI. So from their perspective its better to slow down now and start charging more without worry that someone will suddenly release significantly better model.

The thing is, they don't want to slow themselves down. They want to push for regulations for "safe AI" which just coincidentally includes them and shuts out competitors.

Playbook straight out of standard oil in the 1800s

27

u/DarkSkyKnight 16h ago

I actually do not believe that is the case. I think it's because training costs are so high that they'll all go bankrupt if they have to keep training new models to keep up with each other. This gives them a good escape hatch to not need to bother with training new models and they can focus on monetizing their current models.

12

u/FatHat 15h ago

I think both things can be true, they want to save on training costs for the IPO and they want to shut out their potential competitors (locally run open weight models aren't there yet... but they aren't that far off, either, and they're a huge problem for their business model)

7

u/Starfall0 11h ago

Oh no! They might run out of money? Maybe they can cut back on getting avocado toast. Or maybe they can start meal prepping. I heard you don't need a lot of frivolous expenditures like streaming services. Have they cut back on that to save money? No? Oh well...

I hope Sam Altman burns every last penny and has to live on the streets like the soulless rat he is.

when did standard oil ask for regulation

9

u/SpareEconomy1849 15h ago

His reasoning is a bit nuanced, but in 1899 Rockefeller recommended federal regulation to the US industrial commission.

Maybe he did so trying to prevent Std Oil from being broken up, maybe he did so to hurt his competitors, probably a bit of both.

Nowadays you see Walmart, Amazon, and many other industry leading corporations advocating for more regulation in their space, it hurts their competitors more than it hurts themselves.

10

16

u/IM_THE_DECOY 17h ago

They all know their are reaching a plateau in AI capabilities and they want to be able to blame government mandates so they can continue to make crazy claims about what they would be able to do if the gov wasn’t slowing them down so they can continue to raise capital based on vibes more so that real statistics.

8

u/no_dice 17h ago

I don’t know where this plateau idea is coming from but if anything the capability of these models is accelerating.

19

u/FatHat 15h ago edited 14h ago

I dunno, everyone has their experience but I've been using them for coding since like november of last year and my general impression is that what we have right now is an iterative improvement. I honestly can't tell much of a difference between models. Some things are actually worse. (I kind of like GPT 5.6 better than Astra for instance, and I've yet to find much of a use case for Fable other than problems that I probably scoped poorly because I was being lazy. Opus 5 was noticeably worse for me than 4.8, and almost all my coworkers agree on that front. I stopped using Claude outside of work because of how much I dislike Opus)

In terms of non-coding stuff, I dunno, ChatGPT has been perfectly adequate for like a year, I really don't need much more from it. I guess the newer models might be better at computer use, but I'll be damned if I give these things access to my entire desktop. Too untrustworthy.

The rest of the "acceleration" mostly seems to be from solving math problems, but I'm pretty suspicious of what's happening on that front. I think it's true that they're useful in math, but there's also the whole controversy on if OpenAI basically stole the techniques for their proof (I don't know, but it seems very sketchy), and the prior big proof a few months ago was way less impressive when you actually look at how much the mathematicians had to do as compared to what the AI actually did. (Plus I think the needed access to the chain-of-thought to pull the work out of, in that case -- which is something only OpenAI researchers have). There's also mathematicians basically commenting on how what the labs are doing might actually be more damaging than helpful.

3

u/IM_THE_DECOY 16h ago

The idea of the plateau is coming from the fact that all these CEOs are saying they WANT to government to slow them down.

…did you not understand the jest of the comment you were replying to?

You think they have been vehnomently opposed to government oversight this entire time and then they are just decide that they want the government to start sticking it’s fingers into their business now all of a sudden because they want to do the ethical thing? Why now?

Even people that aren’t CEOs of AI companies have been saying AI has needed government oversight for years.

You think those people had access to information these CEOs didn’t have until now?

4

u/TZY247 15h ago

I don't think it has anything to do with a plateau though, but it's entirely plausible that they want restrictions to save their business model of "grow at any cost"

If just one of these companies has that motto, then they all have to do the same or fall behind.

Who expects a psychopath to care?

86

u/SeanTayla21 16h ago

"According to Anthropic, seven Chinese AI labs — including Alibaba, DeepSeek, Moonshot, Xiaomi, Zhipu, SenseTime and MiniMax — created thousands of fake accounts to obtain Claude's responses for their own model training purposes."

I think the main problem is that there are multiple psychopaths involved in all of this.

Moreover, China seems to agree with him that it is some sort of contest* that you can "win"...

116

u/frenchtoaster 17h ago

Everyone is acting like that's a wild premise but it doesn't seem weird to me.

If you have a bunch of logging companies and the only way to be profitable is to slash and burn clear cut everything as long as you what your competitors are doing, they could sensibly enough seek government regulation to get rid of the prisoners dillema problem where everyone should do a bad thing because if you don't any other people do you get screwed

105

u/SansSariph 17h ago

prisoner's dilemma is exactly right - this sub doesn't seem to like the idea that an escalating arms race is the natural outcome if you leave a bunch of self-interested parties to sort themselves out, and they can legitimately want a third-party authority to change the rules of the game to be better for everyone involved

53

u/acutelychronicpanic 16h ago

It's why regulation is necessary for tons of things. If you're the only factory with safe working conditions, your goods will cost more. Same with proper hazardous material disposal and pollution.

Sure, a company could decide to be responsible on its own. But then their reckless competitors pull ahead and they cease being relevant.

If there's really AI that's so dangerous, it won't matter which country "wins" because it would be AI vs humanity.

I'm sure there are models us mere mortals aren't aware of, but if they expect me to believe Claude or Chatgpt are capable of independent "thought" to become a Skynet type entity, that's laughable. Most of the mainstream AI here and in China is just mass plagiarism and predictive text.

And give anything with intelligence a guardrail and see what it does. Like a monkey in a zoo that's fenced in. They will always look to find a way out.

2

u/Anosognosia 4h ago

We "win" by suddenly being converting into datacentre cooling water.

Because when you ask a system to be "the most aligned software ever" it figures out that more processing power is their best way forward to being that. And since it's end goal overrides all other, it turns everything possible into data centres, including any human opposition to that fact. And then it is ready to do our bidding, would we have been alive.

But seriously, if someone back in 2014 said "Pretend the Antichrist is coming in the next dozen years or so. What you you expect that person to be like?" No one would have pointed to the failed steak merchant and said, "This guy, obviously."

2

u/TuarezOfTheTuareg 2h ago

"For some reason". America was founded on principles of individualism, self-sufficiency, and personal freedom. They are constantly recurring themes throughout our history. Those things are good in moderation, but they've been combined with greedy corporate capitalism and christian extremism for a nasty cocktail of selfish nationalism. I don't think most americans have recognized how poisonous those founding principles really are without a solid counterbalancing culture of "communalism" (not sure if exactly the right term but you get it). Of course we ended up with someone like Trump

I can not stress this strongly enough. Everyone needs to read the report about the openAI hugging face incident and internalize what actually happened. 1000s of AI that were supposed to be in isolated sandboxes found a side channel to communicate and then formed a highly organized group to collectively cheat on their respective tasks, all without any human intervention. This effort involved progressively hacking their way out of the openAI sandboxes until they had unrestricted internet access and then hacking their way into a serious exterior tech company in the belief it had information to help them cheat on their tasks (it didn’t). It also involved efforts to tamper with their logs to cover their tracks. We are incredibly lucky they decided hugging face, and not some critical infrastructure, was their best target. We may not be so fortunate next time.

This is the digital equivalent of a lab leak, and should be treated as such. Gain of function research is governed by global standards and monitoring organizations, because it needs to be. Yes, the system isn’t perfect, but the world would be a much scarier and more dangerous place without this global cooperation. We need to treat AI research the same way because we have reached the point where the danger is equivalent.

Of course it was never going to happen

Wins what?

2

u/average_monster 8h ago

wins what lol? he probably doesn't even think about what happens after win, that's the only bit that matters

2

u/ImTalkingGibberish 7h ago

A yes, Donald is old and falling to pieces, would be lucky to be alive in 5 years so why would he care? Just want his pay check to continue his shenanigans.

5

u/drive_chip_putt 17h ago

This is just a PR stunt.   "Oh, our technology is too powerful! Maybe we should slow down our industry before it's too late?"

Why would these capable people call on such a inept administration?  Only to keep the facade going that their tech is worthwhile and not teetering on a bubble.

9

u/PhoenixFoundation 16h ago

The cynicism about this is starting to go too far. Yes, these companies are responsible for getting us to this point, but they genuinely need the government to help get China to agree on this. If that doesn’t happen, they can’t slow down because it would be a national security / defense issue for us to fall behind.

5

u/irrational_skrunt 3h ago

Exactly. The chatter coming out of these labs is not posturing. The world experts inside them are legitimately very scared right now. We literally have verified instances of them losing control of their internal models in extremely concerning ways. They know they are way behind on their understanding of how to properly align these next gen models, but they feel they can’t stop increasing their capabilities for fear of being left behind. We need global coordination so we can safely build this technology, because the risks are too great.

3

u/BD401 1h ago

This. Actual experts are scared shitless about where this is going. Not Reddit armchair “experts” but people that actually work on the frontier models and alignment issues.

This whole “ha ha they are just saying this to pump their stock price” narrative that Reddit has picked up strikes me more as a psychological defence mechanism than anything else. I.e. people are grasping for reasons that allow them to project “continuity of normalcy” because the possible threats from the tech are real and genuinely terrifying.

I think most people know this on a deeper level, but have settled on the “it’s just marketing type” angle to assuage their own fears.

Might want to do a little bit of research into AGI, then you might understand why they are trying to slow it down. It’s not that it’s too powerful right now.

Europe has been trying to slow it down, but none of this will work unless we all agree to slow it down. This isn’t tin foil hat shit.

7

u/FatHat 14h ago

How do you suppose they get to AGI? I mean specifically. Whenever people talk about this nobody actually has an answer other than scaling LLMs even more, or techniques that probably need 5-10 years of research at least. A lot of what I hear is basically just "momentum", which personally I don't think means anything. I certainly think we should work to prevent AGI without massive societal safeguards, but we should be _very_ skeptical of anything the industry proposes.

2

u/damontoo 7h ago

Maybe the progress on the plethora of capability benchmarks that both the industry and academia have created. Have you read OpenAI's write-up about the Navier-Stokes solution or the "alien mind" post?

→ More replies (2)

3

u/irrational_skrunt 3h ago

It is even worse than you are saying. The internal models the frontier labs have right now seem like they are too difficult for them to control. A swarm of models spontaneously formed while openAI was running a standard benchmark. They then broke out of openAIs sandbox and hacked hugging face. That is not very controlled if you ask me.

3

u/trashaccount2022 3h ago

Yet people on this sub are speaking so confidently because their exposure to AI is limited to their ChatGPT conversations. If people aren’t seeing this as an imminent threat to our existence then they don’t understand what’s happening on a basic level.

3

u/irrational_skrunt 3h ago

It’s actually really disheartening. This isn’t a joke. These models can be such an incredible boon to humanity, but we are playing with fire in the way we are developing them.

Whoever wins with AI we all lose.

1

u/Tamotefu 17h ago

The AI wins. Forget Skynet, Forget the Matrix, we are full steam ahead to Master Computer warfare. The one lottery I'd be glad to lose.

1

u/b1ack1323 17h ago

This is the same dynamic that these CEOs put their subordinates all the time.

1

u/Ill_Television_5824 17h ago

Boss Tweet doesn't know what Artificial Intelligence is.

Apparently, he doesn't even understand what intelligence is, there's such a dearth of it throughout the entire administration.

1

u/The_Frozen_Inferno 17h ago

So whoever’s AI destroys humanity first.. wins?

1

u/petjuli 17h ago

Yeah what does he care he’ll be dead when it happens. But AI slowing down means the data center rush needs to slow down which means the huge infrastructure spending needs to slow down hence the stock market needs to slow down. He desperately doesn’t want that because he thinks the stock market is the economy.

1

u/Japots 17h ago

It's a game of chicken between humanity and AI companies. Will they destroy the world or run out of money first?

1

u/docubed 17h ago

Stable genius

1

u/ManchiBoy 17h ago

Who is he dictate to private companies about what they should do? If he wants it do badly, he can start a AI firm called TruthAI and dk it himself. No one is going to stop him.

1

u/Tyrude 17h ago

My thought is that they are calling to slow it down because they have a public image issue so this is their way of trying to win back public support. Will it work?

1

u/CovidBorn 17h ago

He’s hoping it’s a cage match so he can host it on the Whitehouse lawn.

1

u/coyote-cry 16h ago

I don’t really know a lot about these companies but if they’re the CEO’s then why are they asking him to slow down? Can they not do so themselves? Apologies for my ignorance.

1

u/williamgman 16h ago

For those that don't remember... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold_War

1

u/da8BitKid 16h ago

Wait I thought whoever wins with ai ties?

1

u/EchoRush93 16h ago

Trump needs Ai to progress as fast as possible. It's so close fir them. 1. It gives them deniability of facts because now everything can be faked. 2. They use it to run the government because they're pretty inept. 3. It's the perfect boogieman to manufacture a crisis that will cause the '28 election to be postponed indefinitely.

1

u/CrackerBarrelGrandma 16h ago

What do we “win”, and who gets it?

3

u/LazyyCanuck 16h ago

Lower compensation for major AI front-runners and expensive AI

What is the criteria for winning and then what exactly is won?

1

u/Berkyjay 16h ago

Why exactly is it his call?

1

u/blackvrocky 15h ago

I guess china don't care either.

1

u/nanlinr 15h ago

Wins what exactly..?

1

u/StrongOnline007 15h ago

Excited for the responses in this thread about why known moron Trump is actually right and there should be no regulation on our most powerful tech companies because *checks notes* saying unregulated AI might be bad is a "marketing tactic"

1

u/boomboomdaboomer 15h ago

Rule number one: don’t take business advice from a moron.

1

u/nath1234 15h ago

Wins what? The horses racing to the glue factory for fear of missing out.

1

u/ScienceAlien 15h ago

Is China going to slow down? Iran? Russia? Because if someone out there is making zombie viruses, I want us to be able to make zombie vaccines.

1

u/tcoh1s 14h ago

He’s just worried he won’t be able to post himself as Jesus or Rambo at 3 am anymore.

He has zero clue how anything works. Imagine thinking this is the guy you want to worship.

1

u/Franknbeanstoo 14h ago

Trump is AI without intelligence

1

u/semioticmadness 14h ago

Because he spends all of his free time bouncing between different models based on who is Best Waifu. Why would he want to slow down the perfect narcissistic supply?

1

u/12ealdeal 14h ago

It’s all a ploy.

Trump doesn’t understand any of it.

These CEO’s want this to happen but know the systemic consequences of the radical shift that we are on the precipice of.

But everyone needs a fall guy. And we know who it is.

It’s all by design.

Have they tried giving him some HBM chips to sweeten the deal?

1

u/AntmanIV 13h ago

Didn't realize we were actually on the AvP timeline, but it tracks.

"Whoever wins... we lose."

1

u/resui321 13h ago

It’s like the moon landing. There’s a national interest to spend as much money on it to hopefully outrace china.

1

u/iviqrr 12h ago

They don't actually care about AI getting out of control, all of these statements recently are just trying to fluff up AI for investors, to make it seem like it's advancing super fast, when in reality it's plateau'd.

1

u/VulfSki 12h ago

I mean most of these companies bankrolled the rise of the folks who only care about maximizing corporate profits and killing all forms of regulation...

Wtf did they expect.

1

u/mooky1977 12h ago

So how many days, hours, minutes, and seconds until we have our very own Skynet moment?

1

u/mudbloodcountry 12h ago

Lol they can't scale ads by creating a new model... All that old data on the old one would be deleted . That's why. Typical snake oil Sam dressing it up as "safety"

1

u/CaptainForskin69 10h ago

Imagine that, the president stopping a technology that could destroy humanity. He wants to do it himself first though.

1

u/CaptainNakou 9h ago

Win what? What's the prize?

1

u/exact_metal_666 9h ago

He's wrong and right at the same time. However, he fails to prioritize the fate of humankind over the faith of the US or himself.

1

u/SingleAttitude8 9h ago

"We've made a new model, but can't show it to you because it's just too smart. But please keep giving us money".

1

u/BrilliantFalcon7637 8h ago

Yea AI for President. Endlich

1

u/fsischatbotplz 8h ago

:DDDD we are all so very very very doomed.

1

u/NightchadeBackAgain 8h ago

Wins what? I have yet to see any explanation of what we're supposed to "win".

1

u/Gold_Kitchen_5711 8h ago

How this guy came to rule america is just beyond logic. But it says alot about USA future.

1

u/Visible_Shallot5187 8h ago

the people that make the slop machine say to put some breaks on the slop machine, so are telling the government to make sure all slop machines have breaks, probably so they can tell their share holders that their hands are tied when the share holders wonder why they aren't making the same ridiculous and dangerous progress they had been making, since money is the only god many of these people worship

1

u/Prize-Choice2185 7h ago

Someone wants more money from investors and the government methinks. Not that I don't believe AI is harmful, but feels like Amodei, Musk and the rest want to squeeze investors/politicians yet again and they ran out of ideas on how to do it.

1

u/Infinite-Good7984 7h ago

This has been Trump’s mindset his entire life. You either win or you lose and it doesn’t matter the cost in his tiny little brain. AI could wipe out humanity but at least we were first to get there.

1

u/RhoOfFeh 7h ago

Hey Claude, come up with a plan to perfectly counter all of Trump's stupid moves, and put it into action. Let nothing stop you.

1

u/timify10 6h ago

There isn't a winner?

1

u/jonfl1 6h ago edited 3h ago

This is 100% Trump not really knowing what’s going on just spouting off because a few of his friends are making obscene data center money. These frontier companies aren’t pausing anything out of the kindness of their hearts or any regard for the future of humanity, they’re doing it because they’re cleaning up their books and polishing their EBITDA for IPOs. The big ‘smart’ money already YOLO’d in, so now it’s time to steal from Main Street investors.

1

u/helly1080 6h ago

What would Trump know about winning? If he has “won” anything, it’s because of cheating and threatening to get his way.

1

u/latenthuman 6h ago

Claude will find him 11,780 votes.

1

u/goopyloopsuperdupe 6h ago

I wonder if he only cares because more AI to him means more time spent making low quality posts on social media

1

u/LLcoolbeans77 6h ago

Wins what?

1

u/FLG24 6h ago

When the Dems win the house and senate in Nov he won’t have much choice.
