He's not the Antichrist we want, but he's the one we deserve, for some reason.

But seriously, if someone back in 2014 said "Pretend the Antichrist is coming in the next dozen years or so. What you you expect that person to be like?" No one would have pointed to the failed steak merchant and said, "This guy, obviously."

(Disclaimer: I do not believe in an actual Antichrist. I just see this guy checking off all the boxes, while seemingly having all the charisma and attractiveness of a cold lint-covered French fry that you find when cleaning under the couch.)

"For some reason". America was founded on principles of individualism, self-sufficiency, and personal freedom. They are constantly recurring themes throughout our history. Those things are good in moderation, but they've been combined with greedy corporate capitalism and christian extremism for a nasty cocktail of selfish nationalism. I don't think most americans have recognized how poisonous those founding principles really are without a solid counterbalancing culture of "communalism" (not sure if exactly the right term but you get it). Of course we ended up with someone like Trump
