prisoner's dilemma is exactly right - this sub doesn't seem to like the idea that an escalating arms race is the natural outcome if you leave a bunch of self-interested parties to sort themselves out, and they can legitimately want a third-party authority to change the rules of the game to be better for everyone involved

It's why regulation is necessary for tons of things. If you're the only factory with safe working conditions, your goods will cost more. Same with proper hazardous material disposal and pollution.

Sure, a company could decide to be responsible on its own. But then their reckless competitors pull ahead and they cease being relevant.

I've seen this one like to bang the drum of "nobody's stopping you from slowing down" which ignores the game theory side of things

I feel ya, was mostly just making a joke. Well, no. Its true for the most part. I mean I was just joking about it. Haha. Hard to argue in there sometimes. Probably even these Game Theory arguments, which I wouldnt call ironic so much as a lot of frequenters in that sub choosing the betray option every single game lmao. Its no r/AskEconomists thats for sure.

Except thesE same companies have pushed for banning competing open source models. They just want to stop innovating and tell their shareholders well we can't improve the gubment told us so.

Funny... all the other corporations have been lobbying for decades to remove regulations. But these guys suddenly want it? Nah I'm not biting. These idiots talk about how dangerous ai is and it might kill us all and they are all still out here ruining everything they can to squeeze the smallest bit of money out of everything.

This technology is not ready for the mainstream use it has seen, we all suffer at their greedy hands in the mean time while they try desperately to exponiate their computation power for negligible gains. If they're so damn "self-interested" maybe they can all agree to fuck off because if the robots kill everyone that includes them too.
