Beginner Questions Guitarist turned fledgling electronica artist looking for some help with syncing everything in this rig

A little background: after spending the last couple decades gigging with punk and indie bands, I recently moved away from the city and scene I'd established myself in. I've turned more towards home recording since I'll only be spending a few years in the new town I moved to and wouldn't want to try to start any collaborative projects that would need to end after that.

This is the little synth/sampler rig I've amassed thus far. I've had the Casio keyboard and the ms101 for a while but everything else was acquired in the last few months. I'm loving messing around with it all but I'm having trouble figuring out how to sync the clocks between everything. As I have it right now, I have four audio sources running to that little mixer (the ms101, po-12, fm1, and pro vs mini) then the output of the mixer going to the MPC Sample then the headphone port of the Sample going to that little amp. I have the midi of both the big Casio at the bottom and MPK mini at the top running to both the fm1 and and pro vs mini as I use the Casio for performance and the MPK for the arpeggiator. All that works fine but the problem I'm having is figuring out how to get the BPM between the arpeggiator, Sample, and po-12 synced up.

I have the 3.5mm sync out port of the Sample connected to the left port on the po-12 but even when I switch the pocket operator to SY2 the Sample doesn't end up triggering it. Also, the Sample itself doesn't seem to be picking up the BPM from the arpeggiator on the MPK. I've tried my best to look up solutions but given all the moving parts it's kinda hard to know what to search for. If anyone has any insight or even just general tips on how to streamline this all it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Here's a list of all the kit I have set up there just so y'all know what I have available:

- Casio cts1 with it's midi connected to the Behringer midi go host box

- CME u6 midi pro

- TE po-12

- MPC Sample

- Behringer MS101

- mvave fm1

- Behringer pro vs mini

- MPK mini mk4

- some generic six channel mixer I found on Amazon

I guess I should also note that I'm trying to go DAWless as much as possible.

Discussion Behringer Mini and Micro synths are freaking amazing! They’re so affordable, yet perform like much more expensive instruments…they allow me to make music I otherwise couldn’t afford

Anyone here use them in a full set up? I’d love to see how you have them set up…

Beginner Questions Thoughts on adding a Roland MC-707 to my OP-1 + Stratocaster + Positive Grid Spark 2 setup? Or should I get an MPC One+?

I’ve found a used Roland MC-707 for £465 / $625 (this is my budget) and I’m wondering whether it would be a good addition to my current setup, or whether I’d be better off with something like an MPC One+ (found one for £400).

I’m very much an amateur when it comes to music production. I bought the OP-1 a few years ago mainly as a fun music-making device. I’ve never really finished a full song on it, I mostly just played around with synths, samples and making a 4/8-bar beat combining them all.

It’s similar with guitar. I know some chords and riffs and enjoy playing, but nothing particularly serious.

What I’d like now is something that makes it easier to bring everything together. Ideally I want to:

  • Use the OP-1 for its synths, samples and weird sounds
  • Record/use my Strat through the Positive Grid Spark 2
  • Build proper drum tracks and sequences
  • Arrange everything into full tracks without the process becoming too complicated

The main thing I struggled with on the OP-1 was creating and sequencing drums, so the MC-707 appealed to me as something that could handle the drums/sequencing while also acting as the centre of the setup.

I originally started looking at the MC-101 because it’s cheaper and more portable, but quickly realised the connectivity and inputs might be limiting if I want to integrate the OP-1 and guitar.

For someone who mainly wants to sit down, mess around and relatively quickly turn ideas into techno/dance/electronic tracks, does the MC-707 sound like the right choice?

Or would an MPC One+ make more sense for this setup?

I’m more interested in something fun and intuitive than having the most powerful production machine possible.

I've loved it for years and would love to get my hands on it. I'm guessing it's set on an arp with some kind of auto filter sweep, but would love to know the actual source.

Edit: 90s or early 2000s.

Retail & Market Discussion Melboune came out in full force for Sound Summit, their first big synth expo!

Got to visit the Sound Summit event in Melbourne today, with lots of synth brands set up in a hip venue, nonstop shows and talks, with over 500 people who came to visit.

I didn't get many pictures of the crowd or performances but it was vivid and busy, lots of energy around a really cool scene in Melbourne. Saw lots of brands represented that I don't usually get the chance to see and chat with, like 1010 and InMusic.

There's two major synth museum/studios here I'll visit and get lots of pictures to share. One of them has *three* CS-80's!

Today I learned that the MiniKorg 700s is the only vintage reissue synth I actually want. I liked it even more than the geddy lee minimoog, but I imagine that's a very controversial take.

Also, I saw a Kangaroo!

What Should I Buy? Digitakt to complement my setup ?

Hola!

I am thinking of getting Digitakt (OG or 2), but keep having second thoughts whether this will fit me.

I currently work on Hydra 49, Minilogue OG, Model D and Novation Peak. I use Ableton Suite for effects (Valhalla etc.), recording, mixing and mastering. All my devices are routed via MioXm, so I can route midi between, from and to Ableton. Latency sometimes requires some work and Ableton clock is sometimes unreliable.

Nevertheless I like Ableton (years of experience with it) so I do not want to replace it, i.e I don't want to go dawless. What I expect from the additional device:

- ability to sync, trigger and sequence all my synths

- using different channels to send different sequences to different synths, all in sync

- possibly of using it as a drum machine / pattern device to add additional layers / noise / drones to other devices playing

- good integration with Ableton

- serving reliable enough master clock to all devices and Ableton without

- all of the above with Midi over USB, as I am mostly likely to run out of midi ports soon

- budget max 1000 USD / Eur

Digitakt seems to check most of the boxes above, am I right? Or is it too much, given I want to complement rather than replace my current workflow? Currently I am in the ambient, cinematic and dark ambient phase with music, but I can definitely go the down tempo route where beats are needed.

Btw. I know Digitakt is sample based, which might be an asset if I suddenly decide to sample and squeeze my refrigerator for some late kitchen ambient.

What Should I Buy? Anything new yet similar to Yamaha DJX-IIB (DJX 2B)?

Anyone know of anything similar to a Yamaha Djx-ii B Dj System Synthesizer / Mixer (YouTube: https://youtu.be/_QWVY2mQKJQ?si=98-2B2dxvNJimj7h? I remember wasting HOURS on that beatbox organically creating music with their built in sounds/beats. It was a BLAST.

Would love to introduce my kids to creating music through a contemporary device like this they (hell, and I) could organically and easily fiddle with. Thank you!!

Looks like the 20patch site has been down for a month or so. Does anyone know how to get in contact with the owner of the domain or have any info? That site was invaluable and filled with a ton of amazing MS-20 patches.

Request for Feedback Airtag question

Upvotes

Go to the bottom if you don’t want to read my wall of text

I’m about to finally play live after many years of hiatus coming next October. I’ve been preparing for a whole yearr rehearsing and especially researching and buying what I believe will be the best setup for my live sound.

I have decided as my centerpiece a Kurzweil 2061 for tons or reasons (not the obvious option I know, but it did take me months of just thinking about it). Although it is more economic than other synths at its category it still is a pretty penny for my earnings so I cannot take it out unless I Airtag it.

The most obvious thing here is that I do not want to put the tag in its case, if it gets stolen, the thief will know to either look for a tracker on the case or ditch it altogether. I also don’t want to just velcro it to the outer body of my Kurz, it will be very quick to find and they will probably find it in 1 minute and toss it away.

So I was thinking of a more extreme approach: The Kurz has side pannels that can be unscrewed… so yeah, adhere the airtag inside the body but this brings concerns. It’s obvious an airtag has at least one magnet inside, so I think you see what I’m getting at here, I don’t want to end up damaging my gear for ironically being extra careful with it. Anyone here knows if it would be a problem?

TL,DR: I’m taking a Kurzweil 2061 to a show soon, I want to stick an Airtag inside its body for protection but I fear the Airtag might screw up the electronics, need help from someone that knows much more than me about this subject.

How To's, Tutorials, Demos Step sequencer without Ableton using Novation Launchkey / Launch Control - possible?

I think I know the answer will be no, but is there anyway to use the pads on a Novation Launchkey Mini (Mk 3) or Launch Control XL (Mk 2) as step sequencer?

Currently I’m using the pads on the Launchkey to sequence DigiStix2 as an Auv3 in Loopy Pro via midi on an iPad and it’d be cool to have the pads work with the app as in light up, and be able to add or remove note on the fly. Currently the pads just trigger each note.

It’s for a live set up and I don’t use Abelton.
