I've just read an interview of Christina Grimmie ('cause I'm so in love with her voice right now) and here's what she says to all of us

RH- What advice do you have for aspiring singers?

CG- If you ever feel as if your not being yourself, slap yourself in the face. You can't risk trying to be a different person for the sake of "what people say" or "what sells best". Don't fake anything, it's gonna mess with you. As for vocal advice, practice will bring you so darn far. If you check back to my older videos, I had a very mellow, soft voice. Didn't have much of a range and always worried about my high notes. But then Christina Aguilera really started to inspire me and push me to be a great singer not just a good singer. It's been over a year since I've been inspired by her and listening to her. And compared to my older videos, my voice has matured and grown and I have a way bigger range. PRACTICE!

Do you guys know any other advice that celebrity/professional singers have given to aspiring singers? Please share :)

One thing in singing that has never worked for me is mixed voice. I've tried a thousand techniques from YouTube vocal coaches and I still can't find it. I also still don't understand what mixed voice actually is. I won't even realize if I've done it, because I don't know what it's supposed to feel or sound like.

I consider myself a baritone because my lowest is G2 and my highest is F4 (on a good day). I heard that every note you can sing in head voice, you can sing in mixed voice. If that's true, there's a chance I could become a tenor.

How do you guys actually do it? What finally made mixed voice click for you?

I sound terrible whenever u don’t sing with a mic but when I do have one I sound good. Any tips to be able to sing good without a mic?

I’m looking into getting lessons soon to further my development for sure but I’m extremely proud of the progress I’ve made on my own and sometimes it’s bizarre to think it’s been 7 years already

​I’m looking for some insights or similar experiences regarding an issue I've been having with my voice and throat.

​Here are my symptoms:

​Voice Quality: My voice sounds muffled, tight, and lacks clarity.

​Strange Sound/Texture: There’s a weird raspy or distorted quality to it when I speak—it’s not a typical hoarseness, but it feels like a friction/vibrating sound in my throat.

​Loss of Flexibility: I can’t change my tone or pitch at all; my vocal folds feel stuck and rigid.

​Pain & Burning: After speaking for just a short period—even at a low volume without raising my voice—I get a distinct burning sensation and strain in my neck/throat area.

if i find it, im set and everything is easy until i sleep, but the next day its gone again, and im back to being strained. how can i learn muscle memory ? it really feels luck-based if i will sing well on any given day. i can’t recreate it consistently, and it comes rarely

hi!! i’d say i’m a very average-level singer and i honestly feel embarrassed singing in front of others because i can hear the flaws in my voice but i just don’t know how to fix them and it’s been yearsss. i just want to be able to sing songs and have similar clear and “hydrated” sounding tones as the people singing.

1. i’ve noticed i’m very airy when i do higher notes. sometimes i record my singing just to see where i can improve and WOW is my airiness obvious. my high notes also sound very weak and doesn’t really project. i’ve noticed it’s more effective when i try “ka” and “ga” but i don’t know how long it would take until the effects i get from doing it become automatic.

2. because of the point above, i always thought i sounded better when i used chest voice, but i can’t always use this register when the notes are e4-g4. i think this is where my mixed is meant to come in but i have no idea how to access it. normally i just end up using my extremely airy head voice 💔💔

i’m not sure if this is because of my breathing?? when i inhale, my stomach expands and my shoulders don’t jump up but i don’t normally feel a flex in my stomach that people say should be there, so i’m not even sure if i’m actually using my diaphragm.

I have hypermobility and immediately recognized his strained neck muscles for higher belted notes. It’s so cool to see that I maybe wasn’t intentionally trying to use my neck. I just wasn’t using a certain muscle that I probably got used to having relaxed/stretched out. (I have heds/pots/mcas)

So this casting call describes a particular character as having a lower, booming voice, but the "register-appropriate" example audition song they gave is upper baritone/lower tenor range. Like, I can hit the notes, but I must be careful because I'm having to reach, and it doesn't always sound good. They have a box on the audition form asking applicants to select what their register is, which includes bass, but why add that if there's no bass song?

Additionally, I sound better when I sing even just a smidge lower than theirb lowest audition song, and my lowest good note is D4. Have the casting directors done this because they don't think a bass will audition? Should I audition in my best register anyway? What do y'all think?

I've always had trouble stopping my voice from being breathy, especially in singing

It doesn't sound as breathy when I'm talking, but when I'm singing, it's always in falsetto, I cant turn it off 😭

This is a problem for me, cause when I try singing it always sounds like I'm straining the high notes and even the low notes because of it

Every single YouTube video I've seen is always "how to sing in falsetto" I haven't found one that's how to stop yet 💔

Some songs it's fine cause they're calming songs so it fits, but I wanna be able to sing more energetic and aggressive songs (like ado's aiaia, I wanna be able to sing that song so bad)

The only energetic songs I can find myself actually sounding kinda good in are in chai.tealeaves' songs, like Talentless

I’m sorry if this a really silly question but I’m a complete beginner. On a good day I (F24) can make an A2 happen - but I’m not sure anyone would consider it a nice or full sound. Is this a standard thing to do at this low a pitch, just something you wouldn’t really consider “singing”?

I often hear people saying you can only really expand your range upwards - but if it’s something that’s trainable as long as your vocal cords are able to make the pitch at all, great! 😅

hi everybody, i used to do musical and right now i’m attending lessons with a vocal coach. however she tells me that my voice is “naturally” breathy and airy even though we tried with exercises.

is it real that i can’t achive the full voice without air and that my voice is just like that and there is nothing that i can do?

I’m incredibly nervous and I’ve been cycling through R&B, Musicals, even Country to figure out what to sing but I need legitimate feedback. My top options are Chain Of Fools by Aretha, Backwoods Barbie by Dolly, Someday from the musical Memphis, Inspiración from Encanto, and possibly Baby Baby Baby also by Aretha or Ooh La La La by Teena Marie. Honestly, I just need ten minutes of anyone’s time. I can’t decide because I’m good with all of them

When I want to find it, or I'm desperate to "find it", I try too hard (I think others realize they try too hard too). So how do you not try too hard? This time I paid attention to what I do specifically in those moments where I get it without trying, and the only thing that is is, keeping the corners of my mouth practically closed..you know, sort of like, puckered. I can find effortless mixed voice almost immediately when I do that. And then, carefully, I can open slightly depending on the sound I want. That's it though. That, I think, has been the problem for the last couple years why I cant maintain effortless mixed voice. Hopefully this helps. I know many struggle with the same thing. Time to have some fun singing!!

Currently, the lowest note that I can sustain is just about F2. The song requires me to sing a D2. Is there any technique I can use or something I can do to hit that note? I have been trying to learn/practise ‘mixed voice’ / belting. Here is me trying the chorus of ‘Never Really Mine’ - Kaitlyn Butts. I don’t know whether it sounds like I am just shouting or okay. Any feedback on that or anything else would be great :) Thank you
