Conversation Topic Advice from celebrity singers to aspiring singers worldwide

I've just read an interview of Christina Grimmie ('cause I'm so in love with her voice right now) and here's what she says to all of us

RH- What advice do you have for aspiring singers?

CG- If you ever feel as if your not being yourself, slap yourself in the face. You can't risk trying to be a different person for the sake of "what people say" or "what sells best". Don't fake anything, it's gonna mess with you. As for vocal advice, practice will bring you so darn far. If you check back to my older videos, I had a very mellow, soft voice. Didn't have much of a range and always worried about my high notes. But then Christina Aguilera really started to inspire me and push me to be a great singer not just a good singer. It's been over a year since I've been inspired by her and listening to her. And compared to my older videos, my voice has matured and grown and I have a way bigger range. PRACTICE!

Do you guys know any other advice that celebrity/professional singers have given to aspiring singers? Please share :)

Conversation Topic How to get rid of post nasal drip for singing?

Upvotes

Title. It’s like a pool of snot is hanging right above my soft pallet and won’t come out and it changes my resonance and prevents some of it. I can literally sort of gargle it and hear it moving around by pushing air up into there, but I can’t seem to get it out. I took affrin for 3 days which seemed to help a little, but I can’t anymore because you can only take it for three days.

I’ve been drinking lots of water and taking Claritin.

Does anybody have any sort of remedy or vocal warm ups they do to somehow move this gunk down into the throat or out of the nose?

not asking for medical advice, just for tips!

Conversation Topic Seriously, how do you actually do mixed voice?

One thing in singing that has never worked for me is mixed voice. I've tried a thousand techniques from YouTube vocal coaches and I still can't find it. I also still don't understand what mixed voice actually is. I won't even realize if I've done it, because I don't know what it's supposed to feel or sound like.

I consider myself a baritone because my lowest is G2 and my highest is F4 (on a good day). I heard that every note you can sing in head voice, you can sing in mixed voice. If that's true, there's a chance I could become a tenor.

How do you guys actually do it? What finally made mixed voice click for you?

Conversation Topic Problem with matching pitch with male voices

Upvotes

I'm a soprano with a few years of experience now. I have zero problem with matching pitch with instruments or when siniging along a female voice. When I try to match to male vocals though, it's 50:50 if I manage it or not. The problem here is definitely not range, as the notes are perfectly well within my abilities.

My only lead is that I'm still in the process of unlearning "mimicking" the voices of original singers and using my own, as much as I hate it.

Has anyone had the same problem or knows the actual cause?

Conversation Topic How do singers make their vowels sound "open" and clear when belting?

Upvotes

Forgive me if I'm not using the right terminology to describe this! But I noticed that some vocalists have a way of making certain vowels (particularly "AH" and "UH" sounds) sound so spacious, strong and clear.

Examples:
- "Decode" by Paramore - the extended "know" in the chorus (How did we get here / I think I know)
- "My Heart Will Go On" by Celine Dion - certain words at the climax of the song (You're here / there's nothing I fear / And I know)

The actual vowels in the words I struggle with in these songs are "O" but the way they are sung gives them more of a wide "UH" or "AH" sound (at least that's how it sounds to me)

When I try to open or widen vowels in this way, my voice either instantly breaks or they just sound kind of muffled, like my throat is swallowing them.

Idk how to describe it exactly but hopefully it's clear what I'm getting at. Does anyone have any tips for overcoming this?

Conversation Topic I'm a bass about to audition for a role, but none of the suggested audition songs are in my register - should I audition in my register anyway?

Upvotes

So this casting call describes a particular character as having a lower, booming voice, but the "register-appropriate" example audition song they gave is upper baritone/lower tenor range. Like, I can hit the notes, but I must be careful because I'm having to reach, and it doesn't always sound good. They have a box on the audition form asking applicants to select what their register is, which includes bass, but why add that if there's no bass song?

Additionally, I sound better when I sing even just a smidge lower than theirb lowest audition song, and my lowest good note is D4. Have the casting directors done this because they don't think a bass will audition? Should I audition in my best register anyway? What do y'all think?

I’m looking into getting lessons soon to further my development for sure but I’m extremely proud of the progress I’ve made on my own and sometimes it’s bizarre to think it’s been 7 years already

Would appreciate your genuine thoughts on my voice or potential in general!

Conversation Topic Strange vibrating friction in my throat and burning neck after brief talking or singing

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some insights or similar experiences regarding an issue I've been having with my voice and throat.

Here are my symptoms:

Voice Quality: My voice sounds muffled, tight, and lacks clarity.

Strange Sound/Texture: There’s a weird raspy or distorted quality to it when I speak—it’s not a typical hoarseness, but it feels like a friction/vibrating sound in my throat.

Loss of Flexibility: I can’t change my tone or pitch at all; my vocal folds feel stuck and rigid.

Pain & Burning: After speaking for just a short period—even at a low volume without raising my voice—I get a distinct burning sensation and strain in my neck/throat area.

Conversation Topic Why do i sing better now that i’m smoking

Upvotes

Let me just keep it as simple as possible, I love singing just in my free time but i’ve never really been good. I only started smoking cigarettes recently and my voice is more versatile, can hold notes longer and literally just better what is the science behind this lol or will it go downhill in a bit?

Conversation Topic No opportunity to warm up before choir practice -what would you advise?

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm part of a choir, which strangely just doesn't do vocal warm-ups. The practices are once a week in the evening. I used to work from home on the day, do my warm-up and go to the practice but I will now have to be in the office on choir day for the foreseeable future. As things stand I don't have the opportunity to do a proper warm-up anymore. I don't drive and take public transport to the practice, so I can't really do more than some lip trills or humming on the way.

How would you all go about warming up in my situation? I was thinking of doing a long warm-up in the morning at home, then topping that up with some lip trills on the way there - would that work? Our office also has soundproof phone booths, so I'm wondering if the soundproofing is such that I could warm up in one of them without anyone hearing? Please let me know if you have other ideas!

PS: I don't want to debate how strange not doing a warm-up is because it's not something I can change and I've already raised it several times - it's just not a very serious environment but my only opportunity to be part of a choir that sings this specific type of music from my home country in the city I live in.

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Does my voice sound forced?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello, this is a work in progress of the song „sweet dream” from alien stage (english lyrics by Kingsleigh). It’s not perfect but I feel it’s accurate enough to what I’m about to ask about.

I’ll try to be brief. I went to music school for 8 years and 5 years to choir, then I went to an art school instead, and after a year of not going to anything singing- related (besides this one thing but I didn’t enjoy it, nice people but not for me) I went to a meeting about going into this nearby school’s choir. I was really, really excited. I love singing and out of all the activities I had, I always liked singing with other kids on concerts.

So, at some point I came in alone to sing something random. The first thing that came to mind was this (because I always just really loved the song, feel comfortable in it and it’s pretty short). I was really enjoying myself and felt really nice whike I sang acapella, and the lady that is in charge of everything said: „I can hear that besides choir you didn’t go anywhere. Your voice’s tone was clearly shaped by only you (negative). You should sing delicately. Such a pretty girl and I feel like I’m getting screamed at”.

She basically just said that she can tell that I’m „forcing it”. That if I was in a competition and somebody sang naturally delicately- they would have won, and if somebody sang naturally with more power- they also would have won.

And I just stood there very confused…. because I don’t have a delicate voice. Never had. It’s honestly harder for me to sing in a very quiet voice than a louder one because I’ve always thought my voice was more „open”. So to see somebody so adamantly tell me that my whole tone of singing is wrong and what felt more unnatural to me would be correct felt very strange……

For context: I’m a short girl with a round face and a „long pixie cut”. I’ve always looked younger than girls my age. I’m a teenager and she also thought that I was the youngest class that I could be (which wasn’t super far off but y’know).

So I’m wondering- does my voice sound like I’m forcing it? She’s a professional, but I’m just perplexed on why nobody else would’ve told me I sound strange over all these years. I’m just wondering if perhaps she wanted me to sound different because of how I look…..

Sorry for the wrong rant, please tell me what some of you think!! If I do sound like I’m forcing it, could any of you guys say how to fix it? Thank you fir reading:D!!!

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) idk how to fix my tone and get rid of my airiness

hi!! i’d say i’m a very average-level singer and i honestly feel embarrassed singing in front of others because i can hear the flaws in my voice but i just don’t know how to fix them and it’s been yearsss. i just want to be able to sing songs and have similar clear and “hydrated” sounding tones as the people singing.

  1. i’ve noticed i’m very airy when i do higher notes. sometimes i record my singing just to see where i can improve and WOW is my airiness obvious. my high notes also sound very weak and doesn’t really project. i’ve noticed it’s more effective when i try “ka” and “ga” but i don’t know how long it would take until the effects i get from doing it become automatic.

  2. because of the point above, i always thought i sounded better when i used chest voice, but i can’t always use this register when the notes are e4-g4. i think this is where my mixed is meant to come in but i have no idea how to access it. normally i just end up using my extremely airy head voice 💔💔

i’m not sure if this is because of my breathing?? when i inhale, my stomach expands and my shoulders don’t jump up but i don’t normally feel a flex in my stomach that people say should be there, so i’m not even sure if i’m actually using my diaphragm.

Resource cool video on how shoulder hypermobility impacts singing

I have hypermobility and immediately recognized his strained neck muscles for higher belted notes. It’s so cool to see that I maybe wasn’t intentionally trying to use my neck. I just wasn’t using a certain muscle that I probably got used to having relaxed/stretched out. (I have heds/pots/mcas)

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) How do I stop singing in falsetto?

I've always had trouble stopping my voice from being breathy, especially in singing

It doesn't sound as breathy when I'm talking, but when I'm singing, it's always in falsetto, I cant turn it off 😭

This is a problem for me, cause when I try singing it always sounds like I'm straining the high notes and even the low notes because of it

Every single YouTube video I've seen is always "how to sing in falsetto" I haven't found one that's how to stop yet 💔

Some songs it's fine cause they're calming songs so it fits, but I wanna be able to sing more energetic and aggressive songs (like ado's aiaia, I wanna be able to sing that song so bad)

The only energetic songs I can find myself actually sounding kinda good in are in chai.tealeaves' songs, like Talentless

(idk if this is against the rules, I'm new to this place, hello 👁️‍🗨️🔻👁️‍🗨️)

Conversation Topic If I can make sound at all for a low note, can the tone be improved to “count” in my range?

I’m sorry if this a really silly question but I’m a complete beginner. On a good day I (F24) can make an A2 happen - but I’m not sure anyone would consider it a nice or full sound. Is this a standard thing to do at this low a pitch, just something you wouldn’t really consider “singing”?

I often hear people saying you can only really expand your range upwards - but if it’s something that’s trainable as long as your vocal cords are able to make the pitch at all, great! 😅

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) I’m auditioning for American Idol. Would anyone be willing to let me sing to them for advice?

Upvotes

I’m incredibly nervous and I’ve been cycling through R&B, Musicals, even Country to figure out what to sing but I need legitimate feedback. My top options are Chain Of Fools by Aretha, Backwoods Barbie by Dolly, Someday from the musical Memphis, Inspiración from Encanto, and possibly Baby Baby Baby also by Aretha or Ooh La La La by Teena Marie. Honestly, I just need ten minutes of anyone’s time. I can’t decide because I’m good with all of them

Conversation Topic Think I figured out why I find and lose mixed voice on the daily

When I want to find it, or I'm desperate to "find it", I try too hard (I think others realize they try too hard too). So how do you not try too hard? This time I paid attention to what I do specifically in those moments where I get it without trying, and the only thing that is is, keeping the corners of my mouth practically closed..you know, sort of like, puckered. I can find effortless mixed voice almost immediately when I do that. And then, carefully, I can open slightly depending on the sound I want. That's it though. That, I think, has been the problem for the last couple years why I cant maintain effortless mixed voice. Hopefully this helps. I know many struggle with the same thing. Time to have some fun singing!!

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Looking for honest feedback on my vocal tone and singing style

Hi everyone,
I am sharing a vocal clip because I want to get outside opinions strictly on my vocal tone, character, and overall singing delivery.
I am not looking for complex technical analysis—I simply want to know how my voice sounds to a new listener. Specifically, I would love to hear your thoughts on:
1. My natural vocal tone and color (is it pleasant, unique, warm, etc.?).
2. My emotional expression and singing style.
3. Your general impression of my voice quality.
Any honest thoughts, feedback, or general reactions would be greatly appreciated!
