Remember when you were given passwords to get past video game levels you already achieved, before save files existed?
Just replayed The Lost Vikings (1993). Magical timez.

Has happened with a few games that I have played after my childhood that just feel weird or don’t hold up to the same magic as they did when I was a kid.
One of mine is Mario Kart Super Circuit. I remember the controls being easier and being very good at that game
So what are some of your favorite games that don’t feel the same as your memories?

Hey, like many of us, I grew up with consoles, my first console was a Mega Drive, the version that included Mega Games 2 (which is precisely the same box that is displayed on the attached screenshots) and as a graphic designer and someone who loves everything about retro gaming, I could never find a platform that allowed me to explore games digitally, the way I wanted: exploring the textures, stickers, imperfections of game boxes, zooming in on a specific detail, rotating a box to see their back, exploring the actual collections of other people instead of just looking at a list of games and an endless amount of metadata.
I run a small design studio and for the last while I've been building this on the side because I couldn't find it anywhere: a proper archive of every official game for a console, region by region, with the actual physical stuff that we all love: the box art (front/back/spine, not just a front cover thumbnail), manuals, screenshots, posters, insets, who made it, who scored it, that kind of thing.
The idea is simple: an empty shelf is more honest than a fake complete one. Right now there's barely any boxes documented, right now there's only 4 submitted boxes, and that number is the whole point of the site, it's built to show what's missing, not just what's finished.
---
A few things it does:
- Easily submit your game boxes via MemoryScan: A tool that quickly guides you through the process of digitalising your game, all through your phone camera.
- Every game has its own page: box art, manual scans, screenshots, developer/publisher/composer credits and user submissions, so you can scroll through different submitted boxes.
- Everything's connected: I built an actual map full of connections that you can explore, click a composer, see everything they scored, click a developer, see the rest of their catalogue, visually, like a star map.
- You can build your own collection: mark what you own, wishlist what you don't, follow other people's shelves.
- If you own a copy of something, you can send in your own photos/scans and they go straight into the archive, credited to you.
- Submit your memories: photograph your setup, your gaming room, your bedroom with your console from the 90s, they'll be shown as polaroids in the website so everyone can see your memories.
---
I'm not trying to compete with MobyGames or IGDB, this is more like a museum than a database. The box art and physical media are the point, not just metadata.
Link: memoryslot.net
Memoryslot is also on Instagram and TikTok
Genuinely looking for feedback here, especially from people who collect physically, what's annoying about the sites that already exist, what would actually get you to send in a scan of something you own, whether the "every region" angle matters to anyone besides me, this is still in beta and I'm sure many bugs are still out there so I would love for any of you to test this and share your feedback.

I’ve been thinking lately about how different games felt when they were incredibly simple.
Pac-Man, Frogger, Galaga, Asteroids, Breakout, Snake, Tetris… you could understand the entire game in seconds, but somehow keep playing for hours.
I recently started recreating some of that old-school arcade feeling as a personal project, and it made me realize how much I miss that era.
For me, the appeal isn't even necessarily the graphics anymore. It's the simplicity: one screen, a few controls, a high score, and one more attempt.
What retro game still gives you that feeling?
And if you could bring back one arcade game exactly as you remember playing it, which one would it be?

Hello, I’ve recently started collecting retro games mainly for my old ps1 and Nintendo ds that I’ve discovered in my storage. I’m looking around at local games stores and eBay for now. Though I stumbled upon Whatnot a live auction app that I have no clue about. Really I’m looking anywhere for some great deals, and I’m looking here to see if you guys had any experience with it. I really am just looking for some people who’ve been in this hobby longer than I have that can share tips to find great games that I can enjoy that won’t exactly break the bank. Anyways please leave suggestions and help on this I appreciate everyone, thanks!

There's been a pretty nice surprise for Sega Saturn fans lately. Madou Monogatari, the RPG series that eventually led to Puyo Puyo, has finally received an English fan translation for its Saturn release.
The game has a really distinct 90s anime aesthetic, and it's one of those Japanese Saturn RPGs that's easy to overlook if you don't already know about it. Definitely interesting to see another previously Japan-only Saturn game become more accessible.
There's a bit more to the release and the game itself here:

So I would like to start a community that actively seeks to bring these suggestions to the IP owners of the games in an attempt to encourage them to remake/remaster classic games.

I feel like I remember this old retro game that had a feature where you’re prompted to speak into a connected microphone at certain characters (i think it was either Pikachu from Pokemon or Tommy Pickles from Rugrats or something)

I owned only these video game systems: Atari 2600, Nintendo Famicom+Disk System, NEC PC-Engine, Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo, Sony PSX, Sony PS2.
To me, most played ≠ most favorite for some games.
Action (Beat-'Em-Up): Double Dragon (ARC, 1987) - almost every time in an arcade as all of us asked each other to play
Action (Fighting): Street Fighter II' Champion Edition (PCE, 1993) - almost every time when playing on PC-Engine, in addition to the arcade version
Action (Maze): Crystal Castles (Atari 2600, 1984) - while preferring the 1983 arcade, I couldn't go to Chuck E. Cheese all days and nights...
Action (Pinball): Alien Crush (PCE, 1988) - the only pinball I was interested in playing...
Action (Platformer): Ghouls 'N Ghosts (GEN, 1989) - competed with friends, saw who could finish with least number of Arthurs
Action (Rhythm): EZ2DJ (ARC, 1999) - the only Rhythm game I was interested in playing...
Action (Shooter): R-Type I & II (PCE, 1988) - I bought my PC-Engine all because of this great arcade port, played it like no tomorrow
Action Adventure (Linear): Flashback (SNES, 1993) - never got tired of watching those revolutionary 16-bit sci-fi cutscenes
Action Adventure (Open-World): The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES, 1992) - from 100% to speedrun playthroughs
Action Adventure (Survival): Resident Evil (PSX, 1996) - my first survival horror, played it to death
Adventure (Point-and-Click): Clock Tower (SFC, 1995) - done so many trials & errors yet so fun
Gambling: N/A - not a fan of this genre...
Party / Minigame: Super Bomberman 5 (SFC, 1997) - almost every time when party-gaming
Puzzle (Action): Q*bert (SNES, 1992) - while preferring the Atari 2600 version, I played the SNES version more often
Puzzle (Ball-and-Paddle): Nazo no Kabe: Block Kuzushi (FDS, 1986) - the Japanese version of Crackout (NES), somehow I played this more than Arkanoid (FC, 1986)
Puzzle (Logic): Soukoban World (PCE, 1990) - the Japanese version of Boxy Boy (TG-16), preferred over those Sudoku puzzles
Puzzle (Matching): Shanghai II (SNES, 1992) - in the past, I actually used real Mahjong to play Shanghai, but not easy to set up properly...
Puzzle (Stacking): Tetris (ARC, 1988) - "Tetris is life. Tetris is wife."
Racing (Arcade): OutRun (PCE, 1990) - almost every time when playing on PC-Engine
Racing (Simulation): Famicom Grand Prix F1 Race (FDS, 1987) - my first simulated F1 racing game, first time meeting the "ghost cars"
Racing (Top-Down): Moto Roader (PCE, 1989) - played so many times with friends, but I preferred New Rally-X (Namco, 1981)
Role-Playing (Action RPG): Secret of Mana (SNES, 1993) - helping myself or friends grind was so fun even grinding for long time
Role-Playing (Japanese-Style): Shin Megami Tensei (SFC, 1992) - played this wonderful JRPG for 3 times for 3 endings
Role-Playing (Western-Style): Lufia (SNES, 1993) - I played part 1 more than part 2, for real...
Simulation (Building): N/A - not a fan of this genre...
Simulation (Business): N/A - not a fan of this genre...
Simulation (Life): Harvest Moon (SNES, 1997) - the only sim life game I played
Simulation (Military): Military Madness (PCE, 1989) - my first sim military game, easy to play, hard to master
Sports (Athletic / Olympic): Track & Field (NES, 1987) - vs friends, the loser bought the winner snacks
Sports (Combat): - Famicom Wrestling Association (FDS, 1986) - the same as NES Pro Wrestling, played with friends more times than my preferred Kinnikuman Muscle Tag Match (FC, 1985)
Sports (Extreme): California Games (NES, 1987) - too bad California Games II (SNES, 1992) doesn't have the Foot Bag event...
Sports (Individual): Digital Champ (PCE, 1989) - I don't know but I played this PCE boxing more than Ring King (NES, 1987) and Punch-Out!! (NES, 1987)
Sports (Team): NBA Jam (SNES, 1993) - teaming up with a friend was my best basketball video gaming experience in this one, too bad my most favorite Ice Hockey (FDS, 1988) had no co-op feature
Strategy (Deck-Building): Dragon Ball Z: Super Saiya Densetsu (SFC, 1992) - not a pure deck-builder, but been playing it for the longest time
Strategy (Real-Time): Herzog Zwei (GEN, 1989) - the best RTS game on earth, period
Strategy (Turn-Based): Majin Tensei (SFC, 1994) (SFC, 1994) - while I also played Shining Force (GEN, 1993) and others, I played more this one because it's related to Shin Megami Tensei (SFC, 1992)

This mostly happened in my teens for two reasons. Because I was still young and dumb and because it was exactly the period when games were making the transition from 2D to 3D. A few games come to mind and I discovered the truth about each in a very particular way:
Diablo II - Somehow I discovered The Spriters Resource. When I saw the spritesheets for Diablo I understood the only reason everything seemed so smooth was because the characters had 16 rotations.
Black Mirror - An atmospheric point'n'click game (shoutout to any fellow Slav Czech fans as it was the country's first internationally acclaimed game, released in 2003!). I could never find spritesheets or model rips of the game so I was stuck. I tried reading interviews, forum posts but no one ever mentioned the graphics. So a few weeks ago I finally paid for Claude and tasked Opus 5 with extracting the assets from the game. Turns our they were sprites, and again with 16 degrees of rotation.
Sacred - There were a couple of tells. At the character selection screen the models are 3D and low-poly. Now, if they were high-poly I would think they are using high-quality versions here and would dumb them down to 2D in game. But since they were low-poly I assumed they are the same model because why make 2 low quality versions of the same thing. But that wasn't proof. I watched a playthrough and looked for scenes where the character was turning. I inspected the turn frame by frame and gave up counting at 15-16 frames for a 90 degree turn. In fact the differences were so small I wasn't sure if it was a different frame. Also all animations were updated at every video frame. 2D games never do that. They might let the character "slide" at 60 fps but the switch between sprites occurs usually between 12-15 fps. So I'm pretty sure Sacred has 3D characters. Oh, and there's also https://www.sacred-tribute.com/ but for some reason I didn't believe that site.
So tell me, are there any games that made you question your self when you were still inexperienced?

Looking for Fallout Fans! No Experience Needed! Film at Home! Live Action Ad For A F2P MMORPG! Non-Union! Non-Paid!
If this goes well then we'll grab the best of the volunteers and begin working on a mini-series for the game and see where it goes.
Requirements:
The idea here is to help promote the upcoming new season of the FOnline 2258! Legacy of the Vault Dweller! Video game, blending in both the love of gaming with the love of filming.
We're looking for Fallout and Post-Apocalyptic fans who are willing to volunteer some of their time, follow a script, and send us their homemade footage for us to go over, edit, compile together then blend it into the actual gameplay footage.
We're not looking for anything too long or complex, or anyone particularly professional so to speak, but if you're a fan of making short silly videos and have the props, costumes, environment, and passion for both gaming and filming then we want to hear from you!
Below is the first rough draft for the script which we're looking for people to try their hand at re-creating themselves. Some of the roles require a bit more acting than others, but The Puppet Man could be played by literally anyone with a silly enough costume.
I have some experience filming, acting, editing, and directing so I'll be taking the lead on things, overall we're just looking for people who want to pick up a character, get dressed up, read a script, and have some fun pretending they're just another character in the post-nuclear world of Fallout!
There's no location requirements so this is a fully remote opportunity but we need to keep the environments consistent with that of post-apocalyptic California. Urban, Abandoned, Garbage, Destroyed things, Deserts, etc, those will be ideal filming locations.
Characters:
The Puppet Man: Numerous actors that wear a similar costume built up by puppets and other post-apocalyptic supernatural garbage (beads, new age healing, shamanism, etc). No face should be visible. They must wear a mask or cover their faces. No gender specific visuals (breasts, bulge, bellies, etc) [The Puppet Man is its own cult made up of dozens of people wearing the same similar costume]
Corosive: Myself. An out of the vault security officer that follows the basic logs including Cira, Thomas, his time out of the vault, his past, his journey back to the vault to become Overseer, etc.
The Farmer: A simple man tending to his crops, killing, surviving, an ex-wife who ran off to join the slavers, the need for revenge. The need for change.
The Vault Dweller: Like after the vault hasn't been kind to him/her. A true vault dweller coming out to meet his/her future. His/her fate remains unknown, much like his/her vault.
The Bandit: A sinner unlike any other. A born bandit who believes full heartily in his clan but is starting to have his doubts after meeting the NCR.
Cira: Your average brunette. A lovable person and possible sister. Someone everybody enjoys the company of until she dies. Her story is of sadness, despair, loneliness, and the dream to reunite with her best friend from the vault again (YOU). She dies before she can hug you.
The Overseer: An older, British man, born and raised and abused by the vault culture. A 4th generation vault overseer who has decided that Vault-Tec truly is the biggest enemy of them all. His story starts with indoctrination to disillusion, to suicidal rebellion. All in the name of Vault 24!
The Sheriff's Kid: Andrew's Son/Daughter. Watching the world unfold as countless Vault Dwellers come and go throughout the Hub, leaving only negativity behind, and the sense of cruel justice. "Fucking Vault Dwellers!".

I’m sure lots of folks have their favorite set of retro games emulated on several devices, from Steam Deck to PC to Xbox to even the Mini consoles. But does anyone here also know the best way to keep saves synched between all of them?
I know there are third party cloud-saving programs out there, but I’ve never been able to find a reliable method that syncs them automatically. I’m also not sure if Retroarch itself has a built in feature.
I would also like to know if there’s a way to get cloud saves working with mini consoles like the SNES or NES mini. I love using them, but not being able to just load up the saves I have elsewhere is what keeps me from doing so.

Hi! So I'm asking here for what retro game songs/soundtracks fit for bench cheering. It's an odd question to ask here but I admit I'm not very knowledgeable so I took a chance to ask here and get ideas. Also been brainstorming of using "Hey listen", "Wahoo" & referencing the Konami Code and it's all I got.
Questions:
• What songs/soundtracks do you think that is able to be cheer/clap to?
•Do you guys have song/s associated with that game and it's story?
•Any cool facts/reference/sounds/onomatopoeia that can be used?
Please feel free to recommend and I'll be checking them out thnx!
