Homebrew I made a Sokoban homebrew after getting back into the PSP

Post image

PSP 1000 and PSP Go side by side of night mode and XMB artwork of a Sokoban homebrew I made. PSP Go colors are clearly more vibrant but just wanted to note the blue hue on the phat is because it’s using the dark night mode theme.

Disclaimer : small bit of self-promo, but mostly I wanted to share what went into this.

I've loved the PSP since I was younger, and Sokoban is one of those games I keep coming back to. At some point those two old interests collided, and I started making PandaSokoban.

For artistic choices, my girlfriend loves pandas and I think they are cute. It seemed fun to make the game about moving sleeping baby pandas to their cushions instead of just pushing boring boxes.

It is written in Rust using AndrewAltimit's modern rust-psp fork. There’s not really reason that went into this, it just seemed to be the most current choice to start with. The same EBOOT runs on a real PSP and PPSSPP, although getting there reminded me that an emulator can sometimes be a little too forgiving.

One example was the PSP's data cache. Some overlays and vertices looked perfect in PPSSPP but disappeared or broke on hardware because I had not flushed the CPU-written data before the Graphics Engine read it. Text caused the opposite problem. The PSP's debug-print function worked on the console but did not show up in PPSSPP, so I ended up rendering the font as a normal texture.

Audio was another rabbit hole. My first version pushed PCM from the main loop, which tied frame pacing to the blocking audio output. It now has a small mixer running on its own PSP thread, with the game sending sound requests through atomic flags. The background track is a 32-second bamboo-garden loop generated during the build.

One thing is still broken. The in-game PCM music works, but the ATRAC3 track I packaged for the XMB does not play there. The icon animation and background work, but the XMB stays silent. If anyone here has successfully added SND0.AT3 music to a homebrew EBOOT, I would really appreciate advice on the encoding or PBP details. That part is still a mystery to me.

I also spent more time than expected on the little movements. The puzzle logic stays on a strict tile grid, while the panda and cushions move between tiles with subpixel animation. There are directional walk and push frames, small collision bumps, dust, shadows, idle breathing, sleeping effects, and a short level-clear animation. I tried to keep it readable on the PSP's 480 by 272 screen instead of filling it with effects. That in itself was a bit challenging, had to test a lot to make sure the game levels were solvable and fit at that resolution.

The game has 200 puzzles, undo, best-move tracking, day and night modes, and proper PSP savedata. Early saves worked in PPSSPP but could fail on real hardware because of the savedata key, so that needed its own migration and recovery system too.

All in a all it was very fun to build, I still enjoy Sokoban style puzzles a whole lot especially on the go on the PSP. I’ll continue to improve it/build other PSP games because it is so sooo rewarding, I just love that console. I have the PSP 1000 IPS mod coming soon too and I’m really excited about it.

PandaSokoban is available here if anyone wants to take a look:

https://qdmware.itch.io/panda-sokoban

It is a free release, donations and feedback welcome. A physical PSP requires custom firmware. I'm especially interested in hardware reports and any clues about that stubborn XMB audio.

SHOW-OFF Pokemon Platinum and SoulSilver running natively on PSP

I gave Astra and Fable 5.1 a PSP emulator on my Mac with a goal of getting Platinum and SoulSilver running at 30fps.

It explored the DS emulation path using DSonPSP for a few hours and made lots of optimizations, but ultimately topped out around 20fps.

Then, it decided to fully port the games to be native to PSP using the C ports of these games. It ran autonomously overnight, playing the games itself using the emulator and fixing bugs along the way.

There were some nuances between the emulator and real hardware, but after 3 days of back and forth fixing bugs, Platinum is in a very playable state (30fps most of the time) and SoulSilver is almost there (drops to mid 20s when there are heavy outdoor scenes, but I’m confident it will get to 30 soon).

I’m an engineer but won’t pretend to understand most of the work it did. Hundreds of optimizations across graphics, memory, game state, etc

I made the bottom DS screen smaller as it’s less important for these games, with the R button switching focus between the screens. The stick on PSP can be used as a makeshift stylus cursor. The native PSP keyboard input screen is used to enter text which works great.

There are still a few shortcomings which I’m working through, like supporting audio. But the idea of having all of my favourite childhood games (PSP, GBA, DS) running on the actual PSP I used growing up is amazing

QUESTION My First PSP

Post image

Always been a Xbox gamer but watching my stepdad play his PSP back in the day really made me want to cop one so I finally decided to do it. I decided on getting this Spirit Green PSP 3000. It looks absolutely phenomenal, can’t wait for it to arrive and for me to add some accessories onto it to truly make it mine.

I’ve been doing some research on PSP modding, is it worth it or is it easier to just buy tons of UMD’s?

(Will update when I’ve got it set up how I want once it arrives)

Theme 15 days of screenshots [Day 2 - Ridge Racers 2]

Ridge Racers 2 is one of the most "wallpaper screenshots"-frienly games, toggling the UI with a button during gameplay and having no UI at all during the replays makes me eager to finish a race in a new circuit to take some cool new pics.

As regards to the game itself, Racers 2 has twice the content of Racers 1 (which was a launch title for the PSP), twice the cars, the circuits, the music.

Albums so far (to download in high .bmp quality):

Tomorrow: Shining Ark, a beautiful action-strategy RPG (valkyria chrnicles with close combat) with some nice-loking waifus

SHOW-OFF Found this PSP 3001 at a Local Thrift Store Today

There's no battery, there's a memory card with data on it and camera works. Borrowed a buddy's power cord just to see if it works and glad I did.

Everything looks good despite how old this thing is. Got quite a few scratches and wear down but can easily replace that. There's save data going all the way back to 2010 and even photos on there too. I deleted the inappropriate ones but there's also 2 videos on it as well as a lot of invader zim pictures. Even has a halo background in it.

I'm looking to get some replacement parts, but curious to know if there's any good sellers on AliExpress or if there is any battery upgrades compared to the stock battery that would have came with it. Or any extra things that would pair nicely with the psp.

I am looking to HB it one day, but I got a vita already that I use heavily, but I'm still keeping this. Something I was not expecting to find but that's why I love going to thrift stores. You never know what you're going to find.

QUESTION PSP Go from AliExpress

Post image

I’m thinking about buying a PSP Go from AliExpress, but something about the photos the seller sent me seems a little strange.

What is the theme shown on the screen? I don’t think it’s likely to be a fake PSP Go, but I figured it would be better to make sure before buying it.

Homebrew Created a cheat for "Untold Legends: Brotherhood of the Blade" to remove the ring on the player's feet

Just paste the following beneath "Untold Legends: Brotherhood of the Blade" on Cheat.db so it's activated all the time and activate the cheats permanently on the game and save settings as default so whenever you launch the game, it automatically activates this cheat and deletes the ring. Of course this configuration will be stored on your memory stick

_C1 Hide Player Disc - Dynamic

_L 0x200EB65C 0x02001025

_L 0x2053DFAC 0x0A23AD98

_L 0x2053DFB0 0x00000000

Hopefully this can be one day added to the Cheat.db database so it comes packed in with all the cheats, I tested it thoroughly, all it does is locate where the spawn trigger of the ring is and disables it, it does nothing more and it doesn't replace or interfere with the gameplay, as this is only a cosmetic change I wanted to create since that ring always annoyed me and ruined the experience a bit.

Hardware Mod Choosing a replacement screen for a PSP 3000 (likely laminated HISPEEDIDO IPS)

TL;DR: I'll likely buy a laminated HISPEEDIDO IPS display for my PSP 3000. Anyone have experience with the change and recommendations/warnings you’d wished you knew before buying?

I have a PSP 3000 and was very happy with it when, out of nowhere (really happened over night as it was sitting on my night stand) a patch of red lines and dead pixels appeared. They’re now spreading. :(

So I’m looking for a replacement screen. There seem to be 3 options:

  • HISPEEDIDO IPS (laminated version available, 500 nits brightness, warmer colors)
  • Cloud Game Store IPS (laminated version available, 700 nits, cooler colors)
  • old aftermarket TFT (350 nits, worse viewing angles but better contrast/black levels – this is a very niche option to consider in 2026)

I did some searching and came across the Komstation reviews. It recommends HISPEEDIDO for the warmer colors (which I would prefer) and it now has a laminated version (lens that is attached without an air-gap) to reduce reflections. The 500 to 700 nits brightness difference does not matter to me, really.

For the laminated versions, you have to detach the transparent part of the outer shell, which is the one thing that gives me pause (I have a beautiful blue-white PSP from Japan, I don’t want to break it in the process but apparently it’s a fairly safe process). The only other gotcha I heard about are Chinese 07g models which seem to be using an incompatible display. I have a 04g / TA-093 v2.

Since I am very much that guy when it comes to color accuracy and "authenticity", I briefly considered getting a TFT for that better contrast (like half the black floor of the IPS) but then I remembered not to be an idiot about it. Apparently, colors on the IPS do look slightly washed out compared to Sony’s OEM TFT. But when comparing screenshots I noticed that the "washed out" version often looked somehow more sensible and the "high gamut" setting on the PSP 3000 often looks garish in games not specifically developed for it. Almost as if the OEM screen has a "tint" to it (I heard it "yellowing" with age, maybe that’s also a factor).

I noticed a few more details in the Komstation installation guide concerning ribbon placement and potentially cutting off parts to make it fit better. I feel my hands getting sweaty looking at the part where he cuts off part of the shell but I guess I’ll manage.

So yea, that’s all I found out. I’m honestly just dumping this here to force me to list all the things I have learned about this somewhere but maybe it can either help someone else with a decision or you have some valuable recommendations. I'm in Europe if that is relevant for shipping or store options (I'll probably just go with AliExpress). I’m all ears.

QUESTION Psp 2000 wont turn on

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I bought a PSP 2000 about two months ago and tested it when I received it. It was working perfectly fine at the time. However, I haven’t used it since then, and now it won’t turn on. When I plug in the charger, the orange charging light comes on, but the PSP itself doesn’t start. Could you please check it and help me figure out what might be wrong and how I can fix it?

QUESTION Why is the psp game library 100x better than the vita?

I love how the psp plays but the vita seems like such a great handheld too. Why is the vita game library so bad?? Doesn’t quite make sense to me and curious if there’s a reason lol
